Honor Roll - Archie Bray Foundation
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Every year at the Bray, we find that there are certain constants: we discover new creative voices and watch as others are renewed; we spend time with old friends and meet new ones; and we always encounter a few surprises along the way… One of 2013’s chief surprises came in the form of the results of a study of the Bray’s impact on the economy of Helena. Funded by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and conducted by the University of Montana Bureau of Business and Economic Research, the economic impact study revealed some unexpected results. When combined with that of the Clay Business, the Archie Bray Foundation’s annual operating budget just surpasses the $1M mark. The economic impact study, however, shows that the Bray’s operations contribute $2.8M to the Helena economy in a normal year, and as much as $4.1M in a year when we host an anniversary event. archiebrayfoundation 2013 HONOR ROLL Artists, students and cultural tourists come to the Bray from as near as Helena and as far away as Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean. And they have a tangible economic impact that is almost three times the actual operating budget of the Bray itself! The magnitude of this impact speaks directly to the need for the Bray’s services among the ceramics community and to the Bray’s ability in meeting those needs, keeping pace with the speed of technology and innovation. I mention all this here in our annual Honor Roll for a simple reason: whether we’re talking about economic impact or the newest work being done by our residents, there’s one thing at the very heart of the Bray…YOU. Thanks to your support, each year dozens of ceramic artists of all ages and backgrounds and from around the world find the space, opportunity and community they need for their creative (and professional) growth as artists. —Steven Young Lee HELP CREATE THE LEGACY 2915 Country Club Ave. Helena, MT 59602 In 2013 John and Carol Green and Ron and Mignon Waterman joined the growing group of Bray supporters who provide for the future of the Bray through a planned gift. Donors can create a legacy benefiting the Bray through a bequest and a variety of other deferred gifts, some of which can provide income during your life. Those planned gifts to the Bray endowment that are irrevocable also qualify for the Montana Tax Credit. For further information, contact our Director of Planned Giving Marcia Eidel at 406/449-0624 or marciae@archiebray.org. 2013 BRAY BUSINESS ALLIANCE REVENUE We are proud to partner with these businesses in making Helena a creative and prosperous community. At the Archie Bray, learning to work with clay involves a lot more than watching demos or listening to slide lectures. Whether someone is touching clay for the first time or looking for innovative techniques as a full-time studio artist, growth as an artist requires instruction, but it also requires opportunities to explore and experiment with the support and encouragement of a community of other passionate artists. The community connects to the Bray in many ways, including through volunteering, philanthropic giving, classes and workshops, residencies and social media. 360 Friends of the Bray and Members 155 Individuals and Business Supporters 107 42 Volunteers Artists 5,847 254 Facebook Friends Students 1,027 Twitter Followers The 2013 Archie Bray Honor Roll shows cumulative gifts of cash, securities & in-kind contributions made January 1 through December 31, 2013. p includes donation of art includes a membership gift that helped meet the $25,000 Treacy Foundation Matching Grant for new, renewedlapsed and increased memberships in 2013 n $50,000 and above Alan and Nancy Nicholson Paul G. ARTISTS 67 “The Bray has totally changed my life,” says Gregg Edelen. A resident of Butte, Montana, Gregg began his experience with the Bray driving his son up for a weekly ceramics class. Now, almost 20 years later, Gregg has gone from taking classes himself (and volunteering to mow the Bray’s grounds!), to mentoring current Bray students and teaching adult ceramics classes in Butte, while also volunteering to serve beverages at Bray gallery receptions. The true artist creates each new piece as an attempt to make something better than anything that preceded it. But growth requires the nourishment of new directions in both concept and technique…a workshop at the Bray offers one of the best venues for advancing one’s art.” —Richard Notkin Shirley and Jim Kelley n Janet R. and Patrick J.
