The EOST Periscope is currently used on multiple platforms. As warfare evolves, there will always been a single factor thing that will be the key to a soldier’s survival, situational awareness. There is no need to be able to see for miles, if the threat is a few yards away. By mounting these periscopes in strategic locations, one is able to observe the general proximity, and assess for themselves the immediate threats. The more moving parts, the more likelihood of something breaking down. Because of the seemingly simple design, there is little or no room for malfunctioning parts in the M and K series periscopes. KEY FEATURES : Safety The periscope allows for the users to observer their proximity without worrying about shrapnel and flying rocks harming them. 28 You can see whatever you want You can see whatever you want Night Vision Technology Image Intensifier Tubes Night Vision is a vague term that references the creating of an image in situations where there are limitations to the naked eye because of low levels of light. There are two major types of Night Vision that are in use today: Thermal Imaging and Image Intensifying. Thermal Imaging utilizes radiation and creates an image by displaying temperature differentials. This type of imaging can be used in both night and day times. During night times, it gives the advantage of not requiring any light. In situations such as inside caves or sealed off buildings, there is no ambient light. This makes image intensified night vision useless. Also thermal imaging is more constant. Since all matter gives off a certain amount of thermal energy, there will always be an image. A soldier cannot control the amount of light in his surroundings. If it’s too bright or too dark, it makes thermal imaging a much better option. Image intensifying technology relies on a device called image intensifier tubes. This tube takes the light that is already there and amplifies it tens of thousands of times. The major draw back that this technology has is that it relies on actual light. If there is no light to amplify, then there will be no image. Also if there is too much light, it will damage the tube itself and display an extremely bright image to the user. But because light is amplified, the image itself is an image that we normally see with our eyes. This allows Light is essentially photons. These photons reflected off objects give things what we know as color and create the images we see in everyday life. When there is a lack of these photons, or light, the image grows dimmer until it is too dim the user to see details that thermal imaging would not be able to show. For example, with thermal imaging, the soldier would be able to see and recognize that it is a soldier, but his facial features, and uniform would all be the same color. With image intensified night vision, the user would be able to see the details of the face as well as the markings on the soldier’s uniform. Not all night vision technology is the same. American Image Intensifier tubes and European tubes have significant differences but achieve similar results. The difference comes down to the chemical make up of the photocathode and some of the technology incorporated into the tubes themselves. However, regardless of their country of development, their results are the same. They help soldiers be more effective, and keep them alive. 29 for our human eyes to differentiate any perceivable changes. But even if we do not think there is light, there are sources all around us at night. These tubes take this light to help us see. Photocathode The photocathode is chemically treated to be ultra sensitive to light. It can detect levels of light that we cannot with our own eyes. As the light photons hit the objective face of the lens, the inside face gives off electrons. There is a wide array of chemicals that can assist in this process. Different companies use different chemicals, but achieve similar if not the same results. Micro Channel Plate (MCP) After passing through the Photocathode, the electron particles proceed through the tube structure to the Micro Channel Plate or MCP. The MCP is a glass plate consisting of tiny tubes to allow for the electrons to pass through. Each tube is oriented at an angle, causing the electrons to bounce off the sides as it makes it’s way through the tube. The glass is treated with a special electro conductive coating. As the electrons bounce off the sides of the tubes, more electrons are discharged. This is how the image is intensified. The more electrons flow out of this plate, the brighter the image will be. Phosphor Screen After the electrons go through the MCP, they then travel to the phosphor screen. This is where the image that we see is recreated. The electrons strike a screen of green or white phosphor. As the charged particle hits the phosphor, it gives off a glow. The more electrons hit the screen, the brighter the image is. These glowing pixels combine to create the image that we see. Fiber Optic Phosphor Screen Micro Channel Plate(MCP) Photocathode 30 You can see whatever you want You can see whatever you want Terms Distortion Classic : This occurs when the design of the optics is slightly flawed to where the edges seem to curves inwards or the square grid begins to look barreled or resemble a pin cushion S-Distortion : When the fiber optics in the imager are flawed, the image may start to twist. If the product is of any quality, this distortion should be undetectable Shear Distortion : This may occur in any scope that uses fiber optic bundles in the phosphor screen. When the optics become disarranged, the image may appear to look cut in many directions. Black Spots These are blemishes in the image intensifier tube. This can also occur when dirt, dust or debris enters between the lenses. There are bound to be a few black spots of some size, but should not effect the overall performance of the scope. Blooming This occurs when the scope is overloaded with electrons. The sources that are emitting too much light will “white out” and the whole image becomes brighter. This is a common problem in early generation scopes. Fixed Pattern Noise This is a faint hexagonal pattern that often occurs under high light conditions. This is the structure of the MCP, and is inherent in all of both generation 2 an 3 tubes. Scintillation A slight random sparkling effect that is seen throughout the image area. It is often referred to as video noise or static. This occurs because of a innate issue with the Micro Channel Plate, but does not become a pronounced unless in ultra-low light conditions. Emission Points This is a bright spot on the imager that may or may not go away. If the bright spot fades when in brighter light conditions it is not a problem. If it remains, there is a problem with the tube and will need to be repaired. These bright spots may be so bright as to block out the image itself. Photocathode A glass disc with a photosensitive compound that emits electrons when struck with photons 31 Image Intensifier Technology MCP Micro Channel Plate, a glass disk with millions of parallel tubes that acts as an amplifier of electrons Phosphor Screen A screen where electrons are changed back into visible light. Ion Barrier A one way barrier that allows the flow of ions to the MCP but does not allow the electrons to bounce back and damage the Photocathode Objective Lens The lens farthest from the user, pointed at the target. Photon A positively charged Ion Electron A negatively charged Ion Near Infrared Radiation This is not light. We cannot see this. But it behaves similarly enough to light that it can be detected using the same means as ambient light. It is a form of electro-magnetic radiation, with a wavelength slightly longer than that of visible light. Eye Relief The distance the user’s eye must be from the viewing lens of the eyepiece in order to have an optimal view Figure of Merit This is often referred to as the FoM. This is a unit that qualifies the quality and exportability of a product. It is calculated by multiplying the resolution by the signal to noise ratio. Footlambert This is a unit of brightness equal to a footcandle at a distance of one foot. Infrared Radiation This is radiation, that simply put, you cannot see. The wavelength of this radiation is outside the visual spectrum. Near IR radiation have the shortest wavelength of IR and can be detected using night vision devices. IR with longer wavelengths cannot be seen by Image intensifying technology for it is not visible light. Typically, American Image Intensifier tubes are categorized into 4 different levels or “Generations.” Generation 1 This generation implements all the afore mentioned principles. It will amplify all ambient light by thousands of times. Each generation 1 unit has some level of distortion with a slight high pitched noise for a split second or two when turned on, and an ambient green glow immediately after turning the unit off. The image itself was what we know as night vision, but there was always a high level of noise, and low performance with low levels of ambient light. This generation could not detect near infrared radiation. Generation 2 This generation is generally classified by the addition of a micro channel plate inside the tube itself. The MCP is a glass plate that has been coated with a material that allows for the conduction of elections onto the plate. Each plate has thousands of tiny tubes which the image enters into. The more electrons, the brighter the image. This MCP amplifies all light, and considerably increases the quality and brightness of the image. The only problem with this technology is that the price is significantly higher than that of the first generation, but it provides a much clearer image, especially in low light conditions. Generation 3 By changing the reactive chemical inside the tubes, a much more sensitive tube has been made. Up to now, the main chemical agent has been multi-alkali, but by changing and upgrading this to a next level chemical material, a much more efficient tube has been made. In American tubes, an ion film barrier had to be installed because there were too many electrons. This film allows for a flow of ions in one direction, but stops them from bouncing back. There would be too many ions trying to fit into the tubes of the MCP. The rogue ions would bounce back off the MCP and damage the photocathode itself. In European tubes, the Generation III equivalent does not need the ion film barrier, but sacrifices a little image quality in the process. In both of these kinds of tubes, the amount of light required for a clear image has been decreased dramatically. This has allowed for tubes to be installed on weapons with ranges exceeding 500 meters, or more. Both developments have greatly increased the life of tubes. Generation 4 This generation of tubes does not have Ion film barriers. The biggest problem with Image Intensifying technology has always been when there is a light source that is too bright. Too many ions in the tube damages the tube. In American Generation III tubes, this problem was furthered by the increased sensitivity to low light. Generation IV technology increases the sensitivity of the tube, while removing the need of the ion film barrier. The result is higher sensitivity to low light. Auto-gating technology is a development that moderates the amount of ions that enter by simply stopping the flow of ions in timed intervals when the flow is too great. This allows for a greatly increased quality of image and performance. It also prevents white spots in picture. Areas where the light blinds the user to the general vicinity. Image Fusion Technology This in new technology that has recently been developed. This technique offers the benefits of both image intensifying and thermal imaging technology by overlaying the images over one another. The newest developments in image fusion technology uses software to blend the two images, taking the clearer sections of both types of imaging and creates an image that gives the benefits of both types of imaging. Because this is such a new technology, it is not widely available. 32 You can see whatever you want You can see whatever you want THERMAL TECHNOLOGY Thermal Imaging is a technology that creates an image by the differences in temperatures between objects. It can be implemented effectively 24 hours a day and can be used in complete darkness. All objects emit some amount of heat in the form of infrared radiation. keep the sensor cooled to very low temperatures. The Uncooled units do not require expensive cooling units, but sacrifice in range and image quality. They are also much cheaper to produce and have better performance in battle field conditions such as smoke and fog. All radiation falls within the electromagnetic spectrum. Infrared radiation has a wavelength longer than visual light, so it cannot be seen by the naked eye. Infrared is typically divided into 5 subsections: near, short, mid, long and extreme, and the unit of measurement is Microns. Thermal imaging technology detects infrared energy in the mid (1.5-5.6 microns) and long (5.6-14 microns) range. These differences in performance have given each unit their specific niche on the battlefield. A soldier fighting in urban terrain will typically not need to see for 5 miles. Also because high magnification means low field of view, the soldier is actually hindered rather than helped. But a forward observer or scout may find that a cooled thermal unit is much better for acquiring targets miles out. Thermal imagers create a video image based on the heat of the image. Infrared radiation behaves in a similar fashion to visual light: it can be optically focused and collected. Thermal Imagers utilize various materials whose electrical properties change when heated. These changes in intensity of electrical signal levels are then translated into a video signal. These differences result in the different shades of grey on a video monitor, with each shade of grey representing a specific temperature level. Both types of thermal imaging have found a very important part in modern warfare, and give the user the edge that they need. Within Thermal Imaging Technology, there are 2 main divisions: Uncooled and Cooled. Cooled units typically detection mid-wave IR and have a much longer visual range. Uncooled units have a shorter range and detect IR typically in the long-wave IR area. But with every system, there are drawbacks. The Cooled units are typically much heavier and more expensive. They require a cooling refrigeration unit to 33 Electromagnetic Diagram Terms Resolution : The number of pixels on the detector is the camera resolution. The higher the resolution, the finer the image detail. Polarity : The scene displayed is typically referred to as “White Hot” or “Black Hot”. Cooled : A cooled thermal imager requires the detector to be cryogenically cooled to very cold temperatures in order to make the detector responsive to infrared energy, making the camera high performing, but larger and more expensive. Uncooled : Uncooled system operate without the need for cryogenic cooling. They are more affordable, lightweight and require less maintenance than cooled systems. Uncooled systems are also ideal for small package assemblies like handheld devices.
