Grandma Essie
Following her 90th birthday, Essie was under pressure from family
members to relocate to an assisted living center. Essie’s granddaughter,
Jan Miller, wanted to help Essie live out her years in her own home.
Although an elementary school teacher by trade, Jan saw an enormous
need for affordable assistive devices that could help the elderly and
disabled maintain their independence and freedom.
“Grandma had difficulty performing simple daily tasks like getting in and
out of bed or standing from a couch or car and we could not find any
products that would make those tasks easier” said Jan, “but she also
didn’t want a ‘cage’ (her words), around her bed.”
Motivated to solve Essie’s greatest mobility challenges, without intruding on her home comforts, Jan created a few “furniture-like” devices
to assist her grandmother. These inventions enabled Essie to live in the
red brick home–the home where her children were raised–for seven
years longer than anyone (including her family) thought possible. This
victory, combined with Jan’s commitment to better society, inspired her
to create Stander, Inc., inventor and manufacturer of affordable mobility devices for the elderly and disabled.

Stander was attempting to accomplish what no company before
them could: provide high-quality, affordable assistive devices that
would help people get in and out of a couch, bed, or automobile. Jan
knew that the secret to success was in the product design and that accomplishing this task was first dependent upon finding the right inventor / engineer. Fortunately for Stander, Jan was married to Troy Miller,
a real, live, rocket scientist. Troy applied for the position, and after a

HOW IT WORKS
When a person stands from the typical recliner, it tilts forward, dropping the arms and seat of an already
low chair by 3-4 inches. Simply raising the chair by 5 or 6 inches, necessary for independent standing,
makes it dangerously unstable. Stander has developed a safe and easy solution! When Recliner Risers are
installed, they raise a chair 1 3/4 inches and limit the forward tilt allowing an additional 3-4 inches of lift.
The 4-6 total inches of extra support gives a weakened person a biomechanical advantage and enables
them to stand on their own. Recliner Risers attach quickly and easily to the wooden base of your favorite
recliner. Our patented design raises your effective seat height 4-6 inches while only raising your chair 1 3/4
inches. Each box contains four Recliner Risers, two Rocker Limiters, 16 screws, Velcro®, and instruction manual.
