Eat any good books lately?
Yes, you read that correctly: have you eaten any good books lately? Just as a good hamburger is food
for the body, so a good book is food for the soul. And even better—holy books are food for the spirit.
One good, holy book can change a person’s life and help get them to heaven along the paths of this
earth. That is why spiritual reading is more important than a good meal. When our bodies get hungry,
we notice it right away; we don’t always notice what goes on in the soul. And don’t get me wrong,
we need to eat food to survive. Yet every meal we eat only postpones the day of our death. Good and
holy spiritual reading will help you rise from death to the eternal life of Christ. The saints have been
telling us this all throughout history, the importance of reading good, spiritual books. Ask them, and
they’ll tell you: St. Augustine, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. John Bosco, St. Josemaría Escrivá. They
were nourished by the good and holy books they read. And you can’t wolf down these books in one bite. They’re like a
good, thick steak. You take your time, cut off a piece, chew it over and savor it—then it builds up your body. It’s the
same with spiritual reading: sit down, read just a bit, maybe about ten minutes a day. Then chew it over with our Lord,
tasting it to see what it means for your life, savoring it until it nourishes your spirit. You won’t just read it—you’ll live it.
I mention all that in the hopes that each one of us will read Pope Francis’ new letter on the Joy of Love. Already the
media fills us with much confusion about what the letter says. It’s best to read it yourself and find out for yourself and
think for yourself—after all the Pope addresses the letter to you. Your Father has sent you a love letter! It would be a
tragedy if we didn’t read it, because “The joy of love experienced by families is also the joy of the Church (The Joy of
Love 1, Pope Francis).” I plan on reading The Joy of Love and discussing it with my priest friends; I hope you’ll do the
same with your friends. Then we can have beautiful, intelligent conversations about God’s gift of pure love. Our world
craves this.
People complain, because the Popes’ letters are so long and we can’t always understand them. Yet we pick up and read
huge novels on wizards and spies and heroes and the battles they fight. We read countless novels on romance, some that
make you blush with fifty grades of shame. Shouldn’t we take the time to pick up and read this little book from the Pope
on true love, pure love and our need to fight for it in this world? We get caught up in the imaginary battles and romances
of fantasy worlds. We forget that a fight goes on for the soul of each human person. We need to be conquered by the
eternal love of Christ. We don’t have the luxury of simply being spectators in this drama—if we do not enter into this
story, we will be casualties, along with so many others who are conquered by the ravages of sin. Christ is calling YOU to
take your place in this battle, in this drama, in this romance. We’d better read up on the battle plan. We’d hate to miss out
on this love story.
Augustine was a terrible sinner—one of the worst. He read many books—some of the worst. Then he read the words of
saints, people who had lived before him and found a new and beautiful way, “If I want, I could be the friend of God,
now.” Augustine realized that what he read could actually happen to HIM! It turned his life around, and changed the
lives of his family and friends. He is now a saint forever in heaven. How about you? As St. Josemaría says, “Don't
neglect your spiritual reading. — Reading has made many saints.”
With my prayers,
Fr. Jerome
Some good, spiritual books: The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis; The Friendship of Christ, Robert Hugh Benson; Joan
of Arc, Mark Twain; Theology for Beginners, Frank Sheed; With God in Russia, Walter Ciszek; The Story of a Soul, St.
Therese of Lisieux

an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.” — Acts 13:47b

burial cloths alone; then he went home amazed at what had
happened.” Luke 24: 12

News from
Our Year of Divine Mercy
After a yearlong study of Divine
Mercy
with
our
student
representatives, Kaylee N. and
Ricardo H., we celebrated the
culmination with a mass at
Divine Mercy Polish Parish in
Lombard.
Our mass was celebrated by
our very own Superintendent of
Schools, Rev. John Belmonte.
At the end of the mass, we
prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet followed with many
thanks to the students for their service within our
schools. Following the mass, all the students enjoyed
a Divine Mercy “sundae” treat!
Many thanks to our student
representatives who did a
remarkable job teaching the
children in our school! They
taught about St. Faustina and
that remembering the Divine
Mercy message is as easy as
knowing our ABCs—
Ask for mercy,
Be merciful, and
Completely trust in Jesus.
If you are interested in learning more about our school
or would like to schedule a tour, please contact our
principal, Mrs. Gina Pestrak at (630) 858-3112.

Katy Moore Baby Shower — Katy was
a fierce advocate for “Pro-Life.” When she and
her husband Don moved to Glendale Heights
and St. Matthew, Katy came to CCW and
immediately volunteered to work on behalf of “Pro-Life.”
That is something she had done her entire life. CCW honors
Katy and her advocacy today by continuing our Katy
Moore Baby Shower. CCW will be collecting items to help
families who “choose life.” All items will be donated to
“Women’s Choice.” There will be containers available to
collect your donations from Saturday, April 23 through
Sunday, May 1.
As you may guess, larger size diapers are always needed—
sizes 4, 5, 6. However all items are needed and welcome.
Choose Life! Thank you.
Tuesday Morning Craters — can always use yarn. 4 ply
worsted is preferred. Drop off at the ministry table. Thank

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
17 de abril de 2016
Cuarto Domingo de Pascua
Domingo del Buen Pastor: Jornada
Mundial de Oración por las
Vocaciones
oveja perdida a casa.

seguir a Jesús.
