FROM THE BRIDGE:
The St. Augustine-Palm Coast Navy League Council was founded in 1974. This year represents 40 years honoring and
serving the men and women in our Sea Services.
We celebrated the occasion Wednesday night September 24th with a dinner party at the Slammer & Squire Legends
Grill, World Golf Village. We were honored to have attending with us five command representatives from our adopted
units: CDR Ian Hawley from VR-58, Captain Wyatt Chidester and wife Sharon from USS HUE CITY, Captain Kevin
Gavin and wife Lisa from USCG HITRON, Captain Thomas Allan and wife Kim from USCG Sector Jacksonville, and
Colonel Matthew Crabill and wife Jen from USMC Blount Island. We were also honored to have attending Captain
Wesley McCall, Commanding Officer NS Mayport plus Captain Roy Undersander Commanding Officer NAS
Jacksonville and wife Pam.
Other special guests included Allen Stevenson, Captain USN (RET), who was the Commanding Officer of VR-58 when
they were first adopted by our council, plus Michael Wanchick, St. Johns County Commissioner and wife Leslie. Bill
Dudley paid tribute to a very special attendee, Herbie Wiles, one of the original founders of our council in 1974.
The evening was filled with good fellowship and shared memories. A special exhibit of memorabilia was set up at one
end of the room with a great continuously running slide show of old and recent pictures prepared by council member
Gary Cohn. For those who missed the party we will have the slide show available at future events. Gary put together a
photo album of the event which was sent to all council members on Monday, September 29th.
Council Members remember to attend the Council Meeting on Monday, November 17th. We will hold elections for
officers and directors at this important meeting. The meeting will be held at the St. Johns County Library SE Branch.
Our most important event each year is the Annual Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday October 27th. This is the
18th year we have held the tournament and this is our major fund raiser each year allowing us to fund many of our
activities and awards in support of our adopted military units. We still need donations and hole- sponsors so I’m asking
all members to help. If you know someone who may be able to make a donation or sponsor a hole for their business
please reach out to them. Lee Figliuolo has sent an email to all members with copies of the contributor forms and

PATRIOTIC PARTY;
On Thursday evening, July 3, 2014, The St. Augustine - Palm Coast Council held a
Patriotic Party at the St. Francis Barracks Officers Club. Sixty council members and
friends enjoyed an all American chicken dinner with and Apple Cobbler Desert.
Entertainment was provided by Mr Art Yeaman in the role of Benjamin Franklin. Ben,
attired in period dress shared his views of the signing of the Declaration of Independence
and the events leading up to it. In a half hour monologue before dinner, Ben gave us an
appreciation for the events leading up to the signing. During his fascinating presentation,
“Ben” shared the meaning and importance of the various flags used in our country at that
time. After dinner, he engaged in a period of Q&A with our guests, providing insight into
the personalities of his time.

Every youngster should have Mr. Yeaman as an American History teacher - if so, they'd
have much better understanding of and appreciation for our American heritage.
USS NEW YORK (LPD-21):
Fourteen members of the St Augustine – Palm Coast Navy
League toured USS NEW YORK (LPD-21) on 30 July at Naval
Station Mayport. The visit was part of the Navy League’s ongoing mission to expose as many of its members as possible to
Navy activities here in Northeast Florida. For most, it was their
first time onboard a ship of this type.
“The SAN ANTONIO class represents a generational leap forward for the
Navy in terms of amphibious capability,” said CAPT (Ret) Ian Pollitt, a former
Surface Warfare Officer and current member of the Navy League. “To get the
chance to go aboard, meet with some of her crew, and see how these revolutionary new technologies are being fielded at sea was a real treat.”

USS NEW YORK carries 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel in her bows (pictured on the left). “This is a great way
to carry forward the memory of all those who lost their lives on that day,” noted the ship’s Commanding Officer, CAPT
Chris Brunett. USS NEW YORK recently shifted her home port to Mayport, and is completing a maintenance period
this summer in preparation for her second overseas deployment, later this year.

USCG HITRON:
On August 1st, Coast Guard Helicopter Interceptor Squadron (HITRON) which is located at Cecil Field,
Florida conducted its’ quarterly “All Hands” training and awards ceremony. The St Augustine-Palm Coast
Navy League was invited to give their Quarterly Enlisted Person of the Quarter (EPOQ) awards for both
the 1st and 2nd Quarters of 2014.
1st Quarter recipient was AMT1 Matthew Farquhar and 2nd Quarter recipient
was DC2 Andrew Fialkowski. These two outstanding Coast Guardsmen were
recognized for excellence in their respective jobs with HITRON which is a ‘one of a kind’
Coast Guard unit whose mission is to intercept illegal drugs being brought to our shores on
the high seas. Special plaques were awarded by the Navy League after appropriate
citations were read by the Unit XO, CDR Walter Horne and presented by Captain Kevin
Gavin, the recently appointed Commander of HITRON.
Also, the Navy League presented a special package of
Plaque, Holiday weekend in St. Augustine and a monetary
gift to the semi – annual “Perchard” award winner who
was recognized by his flying Officers as the outstanding
enlisted aircrew member for the first half of 2014. AMT2

illegal drugs. His wife and their two young boys, pictured
on the left with Paul Kimmel, were ecstatic about the recognition given their Husband
and Dad.
In attendance were over 150 of the approximately 250 member unit (at any given
time many of the unit’s personnel are deployed), several Navy League personnel
including council president, Mike Zollar, VP for Military Affairs, Ian Pollitt, Unit Liason,
Paul Kimmel and long time council member George Costa.

Battle of Midway Commemoration: (update)
For the fourth year, Pat Ray has been a Gold Sponsor of
the Battle of Midway Commemoration. “Skipper Hal has
been, and will continue to be remembered. He and Chief
Jay Powell departed this scene in the same year; both
now in the past tense . . . but, no les heroic or spoken of
with any less Grace. God Bless America and her
Staunch Allies”.

Navy Logistics Support Squadron VR-58:
On August 23, 2014 Navy Logistics Support Squadron, VR-58, presented SOQ awards for the third
quarter 2014.
Presentations were made by council member Joe MacDonald (GREATEST Generation) and Council President Mike Zollar. The awardees in order are:

The USS The Sullivans (DDG-68), held the awards ceremony for the Sailors of the Quarter for the 2nd &
3rd Quarter 2014 at DESRON 14 headquarters in Mayport, on September 9, 2014. Pictured below in their

Each individual award was presented by Gary Cohn Liaison to the Sullivans. After the SOQ awards, Council President
Mike Zollar presented CDR DeCastro with a lithograph of the first USS The Sullivans (DD-537), a Fletcher class
destroyer, launched in 1943. In 1977 she was donated to the city of Buffalo, NewYork, where she now serves as a
memorial.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES:
JROTC Units
All 4 JROTC units that we have adopted are off to a good start this year. The following is the number of cadets each
unit has on the rolls as of September:
- Flagler Palm Coast Air Force JROTC 172 cadets with 2 instructors
- Matanzas Army JROTC - 134 cadets with 2 instructors
- St. Augustine Army JROTC - 110 cadets with 2 instructors
- Allen D. Nease Naval JROTC - 246 cadets with 3 instructors
All NL members are invited to the Nease NJROTC Inter-service Drill Meet to be held November 8th at the high school
football field beginning at 0700 hours. Our council has donated funds for some of the trophies to be presented that day.
St. Augustine Naval Sea Cadet Battalion
All of our sea cadets participated in one or more regional NSCC training venues this past summer. These included
recruit training, master-at-arms, advanced airman, Navy Expeditionary Riverine, Seabee basic, Medical basic, culinary
arts, port ops, small boat ops. rappel master, fire fighting and Petty Officer Leadership Academy. Locations included
NAS JAX, NS Kings Bay, Belle Glade (FL), Camp Pendleton (CA), Camp Thunder (GA), NS Norfolk and staffing
League Orientation in Groveland FL.
Upcoming activities include construction of a permanent orientation course on the Florida
Agricultural Museum Grounds in Flagler County for public use. The battalion also will be
volunteering at the St. Johns County Cracker Days event on Oct. 18.
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution awarded the Bronze Good
Citizenship Medal to Cadet Hudson Shaw in recognition for notable services in behalf of
our American principles. Cadet Shaw delivered a patriotic essay titled “Out of Many, One”
which was prepared in support his Sea Cadet Battalion’s annual inspection.
Presenting the award is Compatriot William Roberts of the St. Augustine Chapter
of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Golf Tournament:
Our annual fund raising golf tournament will
again be held at the Grand Haven Golf Club in
Palm Coast on Monday, October 27, 2014.
It appears that this year we will field the most
active duty military players ever, we currently
have 32 military players signed up. A few more
are pending.
In the past we have been able to completely
waive the $85 registration fee for active duty
military because we’ve had enough donations to
cover the 20 - 24 military golfers who signed up.
With the greater response this year that complete
waiver will not be possible, each military player
will have to pay about $25. If you would like to
sponsor a military player please send a check
made out to SA-PC Navy League to our
Treasurer Bob Price. Note on the check “Military
Golfer”.
In past years, hole sponsorships have brought in
between $3,000 and $3,500 in donations.
Currently we have only 18 sponsors which at
$100 per sponsorship only equates to $1,800.
If you know any business establishments that
might want to sponsor this worthy event please
contact me. Every sponsor gets an 18” x 24”
sign with their name and or logo, and they also
are listed in the event program. Hole sponsors
must be signed up by no later than 10/19/14.
