hotel bedrooms,

of criteria to meet
when it comes to
creating the perfect
night’s sleep. From the size of the
bed and the mattress on it, to the
soft crisp sheets you dress it with, it’s
one of the most critiqued parts of a
hotel and everyone has an opinion. In
fact, there is a famous fairytale that
springs to mind, the one where a little
girl tries every bed until she finds the
one that is “just right”. In this issue’s
supplement, we take a closer look at
two of the key necessities needed to
create the perfect sleep environment
that’s “just right” for your guests.
As we take you through the latest
need-to-know mattress and linen
news, technological advances, product

“A mattress that is too soft forces the spine into a
hammock-like position, whereas one that is too firm puts
the spine at an awkward angle, creates uncomfortable
pressure points and inhibits circulation”
The ATHENA is a high quality mattress, naturally
filled using natural fibres, and combined to create
a sumptuously comfortable bed. Super-soft wool,
horsehair, and coir are hand-teased to open out the
fibres and lay over either pocket or open coil for
optimal full-body support. Each natural mattress is
generously upholstered with a luxury cover, handstitched and embroidered with the 1907 name.

My job is fantastically wide ranging and
encompasses everything from providing
quotations to hotel clients, to visiting
textile factories around the world. The
most important part of my job entails
understanding the exact requirements
of each hotel and its individual needs
or wants. Therefore, face-to-face
meetings are vital to discuss the details
in depth; as we always strive to deliver
the precise supplies that a client is
looking for, but within the tricky bounds
of what is available or affordable. My
many years in the business enable me
to truly appreciate the different levels of
quality and finish that can be found –
and effectively produce what is needed.

Give Your Guests the Deepest Sleep Possible
DUXIANA targets hotels with beds built for deeper sleep
DUXIANA, the luxury bed maker from Sweden is targeting high-end hotels with a range of beds
that can offer their guests up to 10 per cent more deep sleep.
At its four Hotel DUXIANA hotels in Sweden and China, the company has created a
personalised hotel concept centred on the premise of sleep without compromise.
By combining research and precision engineering with quality materials and craftsmanship,
DUXIANA has blended the science of sleep with advanced Swedish technology and design. The
result is the DUX bed, the ultimate bed for rest and recovery, ensuring that when your guests
awake they are fully refreshed and ready for the day ahead.
DUX beds are based on rigorous scientific research and continual testing to optimise the
balance between comfort and support.
In sleep quality tests, scientists recorded electrical brain activity via EEG readings when
sleeping on a DUX bed and comparable models. Those in a DUX bed reached deep sleep faster
and remained there for approximately an extra hour longer each night.
DUX beds are crafted from materials including a steel wire system with twice as many springs
as a normal bed, northern pines, natural latex foam and organic cotton with a high thread count.
The DUXIANA range offers a variety of features that can be personalised for individual body
shapes and preferences, including lumbar support systems, fully adjustable beds and personal
comfort zone systems.

Tuck Top Valance
Designed for Speed
Luxury linen specialist The Fine Cotton
Company has come up with an innovative
solution to help hotel owners overcome
the challenge of removing bed valances
for laundering.
The company’s new Tuck Top
Valance enables one person to change
the valance without lifting the mattress,
speeding up linen changes and making
it easier for hotels to maintain high
standards of cleanliness and keep dust to
a minimum.
In tests, the Tuck Top Valance took
less than one minute to fit and 15
seconds to remove compared to a normal
valance, which usually takes two people
and up to 20 minutes to change as the
mattress has to be lifted.
The special design, which has a
patent pending, features a bed-skirt
valance with a fabric panel that tucks in
between the mattress and bed base.
The weight of the mattress holds the
valance in place. It has the appearance
of the normal valance but just without the
back strain.
Available in 200 thread count organic
cotton percale from stock, the Tuck Top
Valance can also be made to order in
bespoke fabrics and colours to coordinate with hotel bedroom interiors.

What Happens Between
the Sheets is Our Business
If the highest quality overnight hotel
experience includes guests enjoying
the best possible night’s sleep in a
sumptuously comfortable bed, as well
as enjoying fine dining in the environs of
table-linen that itself pays a compliment
to the hotel’s ambience and cuisine, then
that’s an important tick in the box for the
hotel owner or housekeeper. And beyond
just the quality of the hotel-linen itself, if
its laundry processes are managed with
seamless efficiency, the hotel is, according
to some industry surveys, getting more
right than wrong as far as guests are
concerned, so says Brilliant Laundry
Group – the growing national network of
independent regional laundries boasting
clients which include Hilton, Marriott, Hotel
du Vin, Travelodge to name but a few.
If maintaining an efficient linen and
laundry service is a critical part of running
a successful hospitality establishment,
what then should we be considering
changing or improving in 2014?
The answer, says David Stevens,
director of Brilliant Laundry Group and
also MD of Paragon, is consistency. “If the
guest’s experience of linen, whether it be
pillows or towels in the bedroom, is not
consistently excellent, the reputation of the

whole establishment is put at immediate
risk. Research among hotel customers
nationwide has shown that a staggering
64 per cent of those questioned cited the
quality of towels and bedding as directly
affecting their decision to return to a
hotel. In fact, the evidence shows that
linen is cited as being more than twice as
important as customer service in terms of
their inclination to return to or recommend
a hotel. Reputation is a precarious thing,
not least in the web-savvy age of customer
review, with websites like TripAdvisor and
blogging sites, and if all it takes is a dirty or
damaged pillow, it seems prudent in 2014
going forwards to keep linen among the
top items on the agenda of quality control.”

Premier Inn Launches £15m Ad Campaign
to Promote its Good Night’s Sleep
Budget hotel chain, Premier Inn recently launched a £15m
multi-channel advertising campaign featuring Lenny Henry to
promote the brand’s passion for delivering a good night’s sleep
and the feeling of wellbeing it brings. In addition, it also took
this opportunity to launch its new Premier Inn bed with its
1,200 pocket spring and luxury topper.
The campaign is set to further drive the brand’s comfort
message, through a 70% takeover of city centre, rail and
Underground digital screens in London and key conurbations
“The campaign is set to further drive
the brand’s comfort message”
across the UK. Plus there is a targeted press campaign in The
Sun/Sun on Sunday, Metro and Evening Standard, running
across January and February.
Russell Braterman, Premier Inn brand marketing director
said: “It’s the first time Lenny Henry has stepped outside of the
hotel environment and the focus of the creative is on Lenny and
his enjoyment of sleeping well. The advert sees Lenny in his
Premier Inn bed, on a whistle stop tour of the UK.

Hotel guests won’t return
to a hotel if they feel the
towels and bead linen aren’t
up to scratch, according to
research by White Knight
Laundry Services.
The research into hotel
guest’s attitudes revealed
that 93% of guests feel
that the quality of towels
and bedding would affect
their decision to return
to a hotel. Of that group,
58% said it would affect their
decision ‘a lot’ and 35% ‘to a
certain extent’.
Those who found dirty
sheets or towels in their
rooms, 65% claimed they
would not go back as a
paying guest. Hotel users
cited this reason significantly
above bad staff attitude
(24%), small rooms (4%) and
a poor restaurant (4%) as
other reasons why they would
not return.
In terms of how
guests liked their bed
linen, cleanliness was, not
surprisingly, the top preference,
followed by a fresh smell and
being crisp. Cleanliness was
the top preference for towels
too, followed by softness and
being ‘big enough’. Just under
half (48%) of the respondents
preferred white towels,
with only 1% preferring
colour towels.
When asked about
frequency of changing, 60%
of respondents expected
towels to be changed daily
and 28% expected bedding
to be changed daily. 50% of
hotel guests are happy to
have bedding changed every
other day and 23% less often
than that.
Business users are more
likely to want their towels
and bedding changed more
frequently than leisure guests.
The survey among 641
hotel users revealed that
96% of hotel guests notice
the cleanliness of towels
and sheets in hotel rooms
and women, more so than
men, are likely to find dirty
and poor quality sheet and
towels an issue.
Robert Adams, managing
director of White Knight
Laundry said: “The look
and feel of your bed linen
and towels is a critical part
of creating the best guest
experience. It’s important to
get it absolutely right and our
survey shows the impact it
can have on your business if
you don’t.”

white knight
Look after your linen
It’s one of your most valuable assests
L
inen is one of the most important
and most expensive commodities a
hotel has. Well maintained and well
presented linen is critical when it
comes to creating a great guest experience
and hard won reputations can be lost
instantly if customers get less than perfect
linen on their beds and tables. In fact,
recent research carried out by White Knight
Laundry Services amongst over 600 hotel
guests showed that 65% of customers
won’t return if the bed linen isn’t up to
scratch. Given its cost to the business
and importance to guests, linen should be
handled with the correct care and attention
and that means choosing the right laundry
service to make sure you are promoting the
best quality and image possible.
Using a modern steam free laundry
rather than a conventional steam laundry
or your own on-site facilities means your
business can be greener, reducing your
carbon footprint while maximising the
quality of your linen. Ecologically sound
chemicals fed through computerised dosing
systems will ensure only the right amount of
detergent is used making the laundry more
efficient. All this can directly influence the
way customers rate your hotel.
White Knight Laundry Services has
just completed installation of a new
multi-million pound laundry dedicated
to the hotel sector which includes the
world’s largest batch washer and state
of the art drying and ironing equipment.
Innovation is the key and the investment
has transformed the site into one of
the greenest in the UK, using 50% less
energy and 80% less water than standard
laundries. All the water is sourced from its
own sustainable supply, 75% of which is
recycled for use time and time again. Heat
is transferred from the remaining 25% to
warm new water entering the system.
Robert Adams, Managing Director of
White Knight Laundry Services, says “It’s
important to handle your linen in the right
way on site and off site. Customers want
to see you promote green credentials and
provide superior quality linen.”
Here are Robert’s top tips on choosing
a good service and maintaining your linen:
■ Use a laundry that sources chemicals
from suppliers that comply with industry
regulations and are eco-friendly.
■ Computer automated laundries are
more efficient with wash loads and use
the minimum amounts of chemicals
to prevent wastage and reduce
environmental impact.
■ Online accounting facilities make it easy
for your business to control the finer
details of laundry.
■ The linen store should be well ventilated,
cool and dry. The slightest dampness
“ 65% of customers
won’t return
if the bed linen
isn’t up to scratch”
will result in smells, moulds and spores
on the linen.
■ Any gaps in the room should be filled
in to prevent insects and rodents from
getting in and the room should be
checked by pest control regularly.
■ Hot water or steam pipes should not
run through the linen room as this can
affect the linen. Supplies should also be
protected against sunlight to prevent
discolouration. Rotating stock regularly
helps and reduces wear and tear.
■ Shelving or storage racks should be
smooth, at least six inches above the
floor and made of material that won’t
stain the linen. Aluminium is sturdy and
non-corrosive.
■ Linen should be arranged by size and
neatly stacked on shelves, with heavier
linen on lower shelves and lighter ones
on higher shelves.
■ For long-term storage wrap items
in plastic foil or pack in paper lined
cartons. Wrap loosely to allow air
to circulate and use dark paper to
preserve colour.

N
aturalmat Hotel makes the
very best natural fibre and
organic mattresses from their
purpose built premises in the
heart of Devon.
The company was started when its
directors Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall
became frustrated with the poor quality of
synthetic mattresses and decided to look
for an alternative. With their knowledge
and expertise they quickly developed a
business to develop the perfect natural
sleeping environment. Since then
Naturalmat have used entirely sustainable
and renewable raw materials to produce a
premium and luxurious product, which they
are proud to supply to some of the world’s
leading hotels.
Naturalmat believe that people, not
machines, will always make a superior,
long-lasting product. Instead of using
mattress-making machinery, Naturalmat

Naturalmat Hotel understand that today
more and more hoteliers are concerned
about their environmental impact, reducing
carbon emissions and the amount of waste
they send to landfills. So it’s no wonder
they have caught the eye of several major
green hoteliers. Sumptuous materials
found within Naturalmat’s mattresses,
include organic coir, organic latex, locally
sourced lambswool, mohair, cashmere,
and bamboo. All materials combine to
create a sustainable and truly green
product made by a great British company.
Naturalmat mattresses provide superb
comfort, hence why you can find their
products in high end hotels including
Chewton Glen, Cliveden, Manoir aux
Quat‘Saisons and The Wellesley.

Chemical-free stain removal with
Kärcher steam cleaners
T
he longer a spot remains on
a textile or hard surface, the
more it becomes an embedded
stain. Over time it becomes
harder to remove, resulting in more time,
effort and expense to preserve potentially
valuable surfaces.
Concentrated deposits of unwanted
materials quickly reduce presentation
and hygiene levels, devaluing assets like
upholstery, furniture, flooring and wall
coverings. However solutions are available
to eliminate stains easily, without chemicals
- for example steam cleaners like Kärcher’s
DE 4002, which harnesses steam’s unique
ability to reach even microscopic pores.
Tips to remove water-soluble stains
with steam instead of chemicals:
■ As with all cleaning, first check the
surface’s reaction in an inconspicuous
spot. Typically textile surfaces (wool,
silk, etc.) react sensitively to high
temperatures; therefore only work on
them for short intervals, handling the
steam tool with care.
■ Using cleaning cloths alongside steam
will help to dissolve dirt mechanically,
increasing cleaning performance. When
removing stains from upholstery or
carpets, a cloth should always be used
to gather the dirt – and sometimes also
to protect the fabric from direct contact
with the steam.
■ Work the stain carefully from the outside
in, using short steam intervals. Gather
the loosened dirt in either the clothcovered tool or a separate cloth. Dab
the stain carefully between steam
intervals, repeating the procedure until
the stain has vanished.
■ Dirt loosened by the steam cleaner either
needs to be removed with a cloth, or
rinsed with clear water. The DE 4002’s
VapoHydro function enables users to
simply switch from steam to hot water,
washing away dirt dissolved by the steam.
Kärcher’s DE 4002 is a professional
steam cleaner that cleans hygiene-critical
areas without chemical detergents.
Generating steam up to 150°C, it quickly
and effectively removes limescale and
mould, and neutralises odours enabling
upholstery, carpets and mattresses to be
comprehensively yet rapidly refreshed.
The DE 4002’s 2-tank system
provides a very short heating time and
allows the boiler to be refilled any time
during operation, enabling long periods
of uninterrupted work. The splash-proof
housing and automatic switch-off keep
operators safe, and the 2.7 metre steam
hose allows for overhead operation without
lifting the machine. The steam feed is
directly controlled on the trigger gun, while
the detail nozzles, floor tools and cloths
are neatly accommodated on the machine
for fast switchovers.
