Day Trippin` with the Kids– Colorado Style
The g lorious game of golf Day Trippin’ with the Kids– Colorado Style Quality of Life in Douglas County Delight in Downtown Parker Heritage Hills and Pradera: Living it up in South Denver A Home for every Style The eye-catching homes in The Overlook at Heritage Hills offer stunning details and surprising options throughout to suit the needs of the modern Colorado family. T he Overlook offers more than just great views of Colorado’s Front Range. These select semi-custom homes, nestled within the established Heritage Hills community, feature European design with a Colorado flair, plenty of indoor and outdoor living space, impeccable details throughout and entertainment options galore. With floor plans to meet an array of needs for today’s lifestyles, The Overlook offers something for everyone. “Standard” options take on new meaning here, and, with surprising features like multi-story interior courtyards, private casitas and hidden rooms, these homes speak for themselves. This social community also boasts two junior Olympic-sized pools, tennis and basketball courts, a mini soccer field and a play area for kids. One look at The Overlook, and you’ll see the inspired vision. ➻ 1 Pla n The Grow ing Fa mily 2 Pla n Families with young kids who want all of the bedrooms upstairs should look no further than this two-story plan. This contemporary home features 3,358 square feet of well-designed space that’s perfect for a growing family. Numerous windows make incredible use of Colorado’s abundant sunshine. Fully retractable glass doors in the great room open to an outdoor courtyard, while those in the breakfast nook open to a covered backyard patio. The breakfast nook can even become a hearth room with the addition of a cozy fireplace, and the loft–with balcony overlooking the courtyard– also begs to become a favorite area for spending quality time with the family. The FOODIE This two-story home is a food-lover’s paradise. The open kitchen–and its accompanying great room– with two-story ceiling and reclaimed, exposed wooden beams is, of course, the centerpiece. The gleaming granite countertops, KitchenAid appliances and custom cabinetry provide instant wow factor and set the stage for the fresh interpretation of French Country interior design present throughout the home. Meanwhile, the impressive covered outdoor room provides the perfect ambiance for magnificent dinner parties. Families with older children will surely love the kids’ quarters upstairs, with individual spaces off of the loft, as well as the master-on-the-main level. 3 Pla n The Entertainer 4 Pla n The r ela x ed lifest yle This plan offers the most dramatic spaces to be found in The Overlook. Its sweeping expanses and old world ambiance make it the ideal home for entertaining. Take, for example, the backyard patio with elaborate outdoor kitchen: It features a pizza oven, sink, refrigerator, cooking surfaces and even an herb garden to spice things up. An optional guest casita is perfect as either a guest suite or as a second office or studio space. The library on the staircase landing provides a quiet space for afterdinner conversation, while the balcony off the upstairs hallway provides a romantic escape. In addition, the wraparound footprint of this plan surrounds a basement-level courtyard that offers the best in al fresco dining. Retractable glass walls also bring the outside in from the courtyard to the main-floor living spaces. The fresh layout of this ranch plan is reminiscent of a European villa. The front door opens unexpectedly to an interior courtyard, which then opens to a rotunda foyer. The guest casita, which is completely unique to this plan, is perfect for families looking for a relaxed way of life. It features living and sleeping areas, a full bath and a galley kitchen–secretly located behind the study wall–that serves as practical space for visiting guests, aging parents and kids returning home from a post-graduation trip to Europe. Meanwhile a retractable glass wall between the courtyard, and the kitchen and the great room, allows for the home to be completely opened up. This is one ranch plan that you’ve never seen before. Designed by Jim Engh, one of the most acclaimed contemporary golf course architects, the Club at Pradera features Colorado’s prairie setting, mingled with bumps and rolls similar to those found on Ireland’s courses. The large elevation changes also give the course spectacular views from the tee. “The design of the golf course has left untouched as much of the land and natural terrain as possible by sculpting tees, fairways and greens in among native grasses and the natural land contours upon which the course rests,” says Tony Principato, membership director at the Club at Pradera. “By doing this, [Engh] has created a masterpiece–not only to look at–but a pleasure and a challenge to play.” The Club at Pradera also has received certification in Environmental Planning from the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. This means that the course is designed with water features, creek bottoms, gullies and ravines for wildlife habitat and travel corridors. “We have a full fisheries program in all the water features, stocking them with feeder fish like Flathead Minnows and Red Ear Sunfish, plus game fish like Channel 26 South Denver Lifest yles Catfish and Largemouth Bass,” says Dean Lindsey, director of agronomy at the course. “When we constructed the water features, we included wetlands shelves, sand and gravel areas, sunken debris and manmade nursery tubes to enhance nesting and reproduction,” he adds. “Our Blue Bird program consists of over 40 nesting boxes that are monitored annually. We also have a Green Heron rookery in the native Cottonwoods on hole No. 18. The most difficult hole on the course is No. 4. “From the back tee, it measures 456 yards and begins with an uphill tee shot,” Ellefson adds. “If you hit your tee shot well, you will have at least a mid- to long-iron approach to an elevated green and a required carry over a deep greenside bunker. Once on the green, you’ll encounter large amounts of slope on your putt.” The clubhouse, meanwhile, is comfortable, informal and relaxing, yet full of activity. In addition, the Linksters are ages four to seven and meet once per week for instruction. In 2011, we are hosting a Family Golf Day that includes fun games and events for all ages.” While the course is private, and only available to members and their guests, residents of Pradera have the opportunity to become a Sport Member. “They will have the initiation fee of $8,000 waived if they join within 60 days after closing on a residence in the community,” Principato says. So u th D en v er Li fe s t y le s 35 econom y Quality of Life in South Denver D Douglas County’s robust economic climate is outperforming many other areas–compared to both the state and the nation–making it an enviable place to live and work. As the virtual geographic center of Colorado, Douglas County offers gorgeous views of the plains, the foothills and the Front Range. The nearly 850-square-mile area consists of five incorporated municipalities: Castle Pines, Castle Rock, Larkspur, Lone Tree, and Parker. However, in addition to being a beautiful place to live, Douglas County also boasts a strong economic climate and a remarkable quality of life. According to Forbes, Douglas County is the seventh richest county in the United States with a median annual household income of $99,522. Further evidence of Douglas County’s economic viability comes from the residents themselves. According to a February 2011 Douglas County survey of business owners and managers, 91 percent of those polled said that the county is a good place to do business. “Although there was a slight decrease in the number of jobs in Douglas County from 2008 to 2009, since 1990 the county has seen a 579 percent increase in jobs,” says Meme Martin, economic development manager for Douglas County. “Over 60 percent of new jobs are created by small businesses, Parker terms of education, occupational skills and abilities,” he says. Both Martin and Holwell cite the county’s top industries as being aerospace, healthcare, information technology and financial services. “We have immediate access to more than 100,000 workers at all levels of education and virtually all occupations,” Holwell says. In order to match these workers with available jobs, both Douglas County and Arapahoe/Douglas Works! aim to recruit businesses to the area. “The county is putting out a welcome mat for businesses by continuing to improve the business environment through streamlined regulations, improved transportation options, and support for entrepreneurs and small businesses,” Martin says. “Douglas County offers many services that help businesses prosper. For example, entrepreneurs and growing businesses are supported through the county’s Economic Gardening program and the South Metro Denver Small Business Development Center [SBDC].” The Economic Gardening program, which started in 2009 as a pilot program in Highlands Ranch, is now being promoted countywide. This program targets growing companies by providing services such as market analysis, industry trends, contracts for bids, as well as geographic and demographic analysis of existing and potential customers. Douglas County also is a financial sponsor of the SBDC, which provides educational seminars for businesses and one-on-one business counseling. Overall, Douglas County is faring better than the region and the nation as a whole. Martin cites Development Research Partners as saying, “The Douglas County economy showed signs of better health as 2010 ended... as of the second quarter, Douglas County’s employment recovery was proceeding more quickly than the recovery region-wide.” While Douglas County businesses have been impacted by the recession, they are showing positive indicators as the recovery continues. The county continues to support job growth and business recruitment efforts to bring more jobs here.” According to Patrick Holwell, workforce economist at Arapahoe/ Douglas Works! (a federally funded workforce center), as of February 2011, Douglas County was at a 7.5 percent unemployment rate compared to metro Denver at 9.7 percent. “What sets Douglas County apart from the rest of the metro area is the quality of the workforce in 36 South Denver Life st yles k u rt ' s Ko r n e r Spring Awakening Maintenance tips for bringing your home out of hibernation. During the winter months, many homes accumulate a lot of nicks and dings on painted surfaces. Often people find that their paint touchups cover up the ding, but the touch-up can still be seen after the paint has dried. Follow these easy steps for perfect paint touch-ups every time. First, wipe any dirt or residue off of the area you’re going to paint using a clean cloth. Then locate the right paint, making sure that it has both the correct color and sheen (flat, semi-gloss, etc). Cover the nick, ding or mark evenly with paint. As the paint begins to wear off of your brush, continue to “dry brush” and expand the area in which you are brushing. This will “feather” in the new paint with the existing paint and make the touch-up less noticeable. You may notice marks from your touch-up while the paint is still wet, but give it time to dry and the result will be a professionally performed paint touch-up. And, don’t forget these other spring home maintenance essentials: • Inspect and replace furnace/air conditioning filters monthly. • Replace all smoke detector batteries. • Remove debris from rain gutters and make sure downspouts are extended away from the foundation wall. • Check sprinkler heads for proper spray patterns. Make sure all water sprays away from home exteriors. • Trim branches and shrubs growing near your home. • If you have a sump pump, make sure it is working properly and discharging water away from the home.
