Dampflokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik DLM AG Modern type marine steam engines with remote control ⇒ same number of personnel on steam and motor ships! Today most of the passengers on inland water vessels are tourists. For them the trip itself is as important as the destination. Thus it has to be attractive and a great experience. There are many types of ships, but the classic paddle-steamers are very likely the most attractive vessels and as such are very popular with their passengers. The balanced form results in a harmonic silhouette which conquer the onlookers hearts. The passengers appreciate the smooth journey which is typical for the paddle-steamers. The decks offer a large number of seats, both open and covered. Those who want to bask in the sun can live up to their intentions as well as those who prefer to stay in the shade. The fresh air can be enjoyed without the smell of a diesel engine. Stylish lounges invite passengers to a good meal in appealing surroundings. The soft whisper of the steam engine allows an open engine room skylight on the main deck. There is a great fascination from the shiny engine and its straight forward design, which clearly shows the power transmission from the cranks to the paddle-wheels. Information shields near the engine answer the questions of the not so technically minded passenger. Paddle-steamers are so popular that many navigation companies accept the higher running costs of those ageing paddlers because they generate at the same time great publicity and more income. Almost all the withdrawn paddle-steamers have been re-commissioned and there still is an increasing demand for more. Taking this into account and having already successfully built modern steam locomotives we have decided to design and build modern marine steam (piston) engines as well. In analogy to the steam locomotives the use of innovative modern technology helps to increase the efficiency and profitability. An automatically controlled boiler combined with a remotely controlled steam engine allow to operate a paddle-steamer with the same number of personnel like a motor-ship. Modern steam technology was used when the Lake of Geneva paddleship "Montreux" has been refitted (its diesel-electric drive has been replaced by a new steam engine) and everybody can see that the idea works. please turn over 650 kW steam engine of the paddle steamer “Montreux” built in 2000 admired by passengers surrounding the open viewing gallery Project of a vertical 300 kW steam engine for screw steamers Types and Dimensions Power: Number of cylinders Diameter Stroke Nominal speed Vertical engines for screw steamers 300 kW 2 280 mm 400 mm 240 min-1 Other types of engines on request.
