This facility will accommodate the current student population at the middle school as well as provide for future growth. The following spaces are included in the program: - Classrooms for 6th, 7th, 8th grades - Science labs - Library with computer lab - Band Hall with Ensemble Room and Instrument Storage areas - Choir/Theater Arts Room with dressing rooms - Two gyms with locker rooms and a Weight Room Gladewater Independent School District New Middle School Site Circulation: The new Middle School will share a site with the existing Weldon Intermediate School. Both campuses will have separate access points for vehicular traffic, but will share a bus loop. Parent pick up and drop off will be accessed from Coach Cooksey Street, at the west of the site, leading to a visitor parking lot at the main entrance. Faculty and staff parking is accessed from Saunders Street, and will contain over 120 spaces. In order to avoid school traffic from exiting and entering directly from Loop 485, all traffic is accessed from the side roads. This strategy lessens the volume and stacked vehicles that would be along Loop 485 on school mornings and afternoons. The main entry to the school will be at the south side of the site, facing Loop 485. Athletic fields, located at the west side of the school, will have direct access from the student locker rooms and the cafeteria. The cafeteria will also have access for the bus pick up and drop off lanes. Building Design: In concept, the middle school will have a central spine, or main corridor, that runs the length of the building. This layout separates the larger common areas from the classrooms, and also serves as a buffer to separate the loud rooms from the classrooms. This main corridor will have light wells and clerestory glazing to allow natural light into the first floor. Stairways will be open to the corridor and designed as communicating spaces. At the east side of the spine will be the classroom wing. Classrooms and science labs for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be a two-story portion of the building. Larger spaces, such as the band hall and gyms, will be on the opposite side of this central spine, and provide easy access to these common areas for students. The stage sits in between the cafeteria and the competition gym and is shared by both to give flexibility for a variety of uses. Athletic and PE locker rooms are located along the north and west sides, adjacent to the gyms. A PE gym and a competition gym are located next to each other. A weight room will be across the corridor from the gym. During athletic events, the west entry will serve as a public entrance and will have restrooms and a concessions area. Staff parking at the west side will be utilized for events and special activities. The Fine Arts wing will be located at the south part of the building, and will include a Band Hall with an ensemble room, a Choir Hall which will also be used as a Theater Arts room, instrument storage, and an art classroom with an attached kiln room. Access from the exterior will be provided to the Band Hall, for ease of loading and unloading instruments and equipment. Dressing rooms, restrooms, and storage rooms will be located near the center of the Fine Arts area for shared use. The interior concept for the new Middle School for Gladewater is to provide a sense of pride within the students, teachers, and faculty using timeless colors and durable materials. The interior spaces will complement Weldon Intermediate.
