On Sunday 2 November at Centreboard presentations an excited SoPYC Sailability
Chairperson, Lynne Newton gratefully accepted a cheque form the President of the
Rotary Club of Melville. The Rotary Club of Melville is a Grand Sponsor at the South of

Sailability. To date, Rotary Melville has donated 6 access dinghy’s to the club as well as
other equipment to enable this worthy project to be continue. The cheque that was
donated last Sunday will be used to purchase a new hoist to enable disabled sailors to
be lowered into the boats with ease. Our heartfelt thanks to the Rotary Club of Melville

FRIDAY 14 NOVEMBER
OFFSHORE FLEET
The Offshore Fleet freshly back from Geraldton enjoyed a busy weekend. On Saturday the
Fremantle Harbour Classic, a handicap start race held entirely in Fremantle Harbour. This allows
the large crowd of spectators to see ocean racing close up. The fresh winds and gusty conditions
provided a great spectacle as the yachts tacked, gybed and set spinnakers on a 4 lap race. For
the crews it is a chance to see some of the high performance racers in action, normally we wave
goodbye to them at the day buoy. Presentations at the Fremantle Sailing Club were enjoyed
by all and we should thanks the major sponsors Club Marine, Hempel, Musto and Shacks for
their great hospitality. It was great to see the newly remasted Walk on the Wild Side as well as
Syrenka on the water, Farrago placed fourth overall, an excellent result.
Sunday was a perfect sailing day and a large fleet set off on the Coventry Reef Race traditionally
a beat to windward followed by spinnaker runs home. Bernie Kaaks took to a helicopter to
photograph this race and some images are on his facebook page. In Division1 Walk on the
Wildside won YAH and was fourth in IRC In Division 2 Farrago was 1st in IRC and 3rd in YAH in
combined divisions - 3rd inIRC and 4th in YAH.

CRUISE TO CAVERSHAM
On Sunday 26 October the Cruising Club organised a cruise down the Swan River to Lilac Hill Park.
Approximately 25 people on 4 boats including Mother Goose, which had plenty of room to take
those people with boats that were unable to get under the Causeway or Garrett Road bridge,
enjoyed a leisurely cruise to the park. The day started out overcast but this soon cleared and it
turned out to be a gorgeous day for being on the river, blue skies and calm water. Of course we all
had a good time, some picnicked on the grass while others stayed on their boats.
There was no shortage of good food and plenty of socialising.
All together a lovely relaxing day. Can’t wait to do it again next year!

DUYFKEN BEGINS HER SUMMER OF SAIL…
A note from board member of the Duyfken 1606 replica, Ron (Dingo) Reddingius.
As members may recall, not since 2006 have the sails of Duyfken graced the waters of
the Swan River, capturing the imagination of the residents of Perth by taking them back
in time, to an era of 400 years past. From now until March next year she is berthed at
Mounts Bay Sailing Club.
The opportunity is there for SoPYC members to book a berth and sail on her.
Recently appointed CEO for the Duyfken Foundation, Peter Bowman said this. "It's
amazing how this little ‘tall-ship’ captures the enthusiasm and hearts of those who come
aboard. She just oozes this mystic and a feeling that you are standing aboard a ship of
significance.
Now is a time in Duyfken’s history when the people of Perth and visitors alike can capture
what it was like to sail aboard an “Age of Discovery” sailing ship. And all without the
challenges of sailing in the open sea!
With the ship’s day sail program relocated to the Swan River you can experience a
delightful sail without the thought of sea-sickness on the radar. There’s nothing better
that hoisting the sails before a 15-20 knot sea breeze and then setting a course from Point
Walter to the waters of Crawley Bay…all on flat, calm water!
This is one of life’s experiences you’ll never forget…one definitely for the bucket list!"
Options for members are, a Twilight Sail on Thursday afternoons, a Sundowner Sail on
Fridays and an Adventure Sail on Sundays. All the details can be found at ;
www.duyfken.com
For those looking for the most unique of hospitality venues, Duyfken is brilliant for birthday
parties, weddings, office sundowners…the options are only limited by imagination.

THE 2015 LASER OPEN NATIONALS
IN PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA
THE NATIONALS ARE HOTTING UP!
Less than two months out and already there is firm interest
in the Laser Nationals to be sailed at the Mandurah Offshore
Fishing and Sailing Club in sunny Perth.
The sea breeze promises great action every afternoon with two races on the Indian
ocean scheduled each day, just ten minutes from the club on Comet Bay. Close to two
hundred sailors are expected on the water with a large number of volunteers that will
keep them sailing.
Some of Perth's best sailors have already signed up with Radial world champion Tristan
Brown staking his claim on the national title. Facing him are Conor Nicholas and Richard
Maher with no doubt the addition of Alastair Young, James Stewart and others of the
same ilk. New Zealander Alastair Gifford has made his bid and it's pleasing to see that
Queensland's Ashley Stoddart and Darwin's Hamish Wiltshire have booked in already,
with more to come from the East coast over the next few weeks.
In the Standard rigs, the Masters are already showing their hands and I'm sure that there
will be many more with such scintillating conditions on offer. But the truth will arrive in
the Open section with all of WA's big four putting their hats in the ring; Matthew Wearn,
Luke Elliott, Ben Walkemeyer and Mark Spearman. It would be expected that several
more premium WA sailors will come on board as well and we can look forward to see
who will join them from interstate.
Most pleasing is the strength that is building in the 4.7's underneath the Radial and
Standard rigs with a great representation from other states already booking in. With
both Caeilin Winchcombe and Zoe Thomson expected to book in and Jonathon Pang
already booked, they have the threat of former national O'pen Bic sailor and now 4.7
whizz kid Zac Littlewood joining in and he will put the older sailors on their mettle as the
days progress.
Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club event director Mikael Lundh has been working hard to get this event underway and he has been ably supported by both the West
Australian Laser Association and the club in getting the event under way.
I'm looking forward to the 2015 Laser Open Nationals at Mandurah from 27 December.
