Dr. Rahemi is also instrumental in Vaughn students participating in the VEX Robotics World Championship, the Latin American and Caribbean Conference for Engineering and Technology (LACCEI) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Conference. His most recent book is Engineering Analysis—A Finite Difference and Finite Element Numerical Approach with MATLAB Programming. He received his PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Maxine Lubner, PhD, professor in the management department at Vaughn, has published or presented about 40 peer-reviewed papers in the areas of human factors, international aviation safety and aviation education. She also volunteers for several professional organizations, including Women in Aviation, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the Aerospace Medical Association. She holds degrees from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and her PhD is from Columbia University. ■■ Naveen Seth, PhD, chair of the management department, highlights his interest in the impact of globalization. Seth correlates the “real” world to the textbook and classroom, noting that during the Chinese president’s visit to the United States in April 2006, his first stop in this country was at the office of Bill Gates, Microsoft Corporation’s founder; his second stop was a meeting with the US president. He earned a PhD from New York University. ■■ ■■ Raymond Addabbo, PhD, professor in the arts and sciences department, is collaborating on a book, Numerical Analysis, which demonstrates how the program MATLAB® can be used to solve engineering statics problems. He holds a PhD from Rutgers University. Paul LaVergne, PhD, chair of the arts and sciences department at Vaughn, combines his love of music and computer science by co-teaching a course with Dr. Raymond Addabbo that helps students appreciate the challenges as well as the opportunities created by technology. His PhD is from Stony Brook University. 7 Dr. Paul LaVergne believes in integrating a variety of disciplines and interests into the Vaughn learning experience Vaughn College is committed to providing you with a distinctive—and fulfilling—academic experience. That’s why we’re always on the lookout for new and better ways to enhance your learning—initiatives aimed at promoting your success in the classroom and in the world—such as: Collaborative Spirit Collaboration happens naturally at Vaughn College—between students, between students and faculty, and between faculty. That collaborative spirit is especially evident in our Learning Communities. We’ve linked courses—mathematics and engineering, physics and history, and math and English—which are then team taught by our faculty, exposing you to more viewpoints, increasing your critical thinking skills and helping you to view principles in more connected and engaging ways. Supportive Environment 8 Let’s face it—subjects like math and science can be particularly challenging. At Vaughn, you will have the support you need to be successful. In fact, the person sitting next to you in class might very well be a student who’s already passed that class with flying colors—and is there to help you succeed by reviewing materials outside of class and helping you work on problems. This approach has been shown to help strengthen your understanding of course materials, develop effective study skills and improve your preparation for exams. Creative Connections Sometimes it can be difficult to see how your learning experiences relate. How does this course connect with Inspiring Academic Experience this community service activity and this internship to bring you what you ultimately want: a successful future? That’s why we’ve launched electronic portfolios, known as “e-portfolios.” They’re a fun, dynamic way to help you gain a full picture of your learning experiences at Vaughn—and to represent your professional self to future employers. 9 Vaughn College not only has the people and programs in place to help you succeed, we’re also committed to upgrading our equipment, facilities and services. Recent enhancements to improve your academic experience include: Simulating Success We’re especially excited about our new flight simulator lab, which houses two new Redbird flight simulators, a new Frasca 241 and a new CRJ–200 to complement our existing Frasca 142. Our simulators give you the opportunity to truly experience life in the cockpit. Cruising to New Heights Dynamic Facilities Our new Teaching and Learning Center is a bright and welcoming area, designed to give you easy access to tutoring, if needed, and room to do small group work with your professors. You can also take advantage of our new writing center and language lab. On the horizon: a new library and student center/cafeteria. Innovative Technology 10 Every computer you touch at Vaughn has been replaced and we’ve increased the bandwidth so that you can connect either in the lab, classroom or wirelessly to the resources you need to explore any subject. Our state-of-the-art mechatronic engineering laboratory provides practice-oriented training devices, manufactured in Germany by Lucas-Nulle, which feature instrumentation and automatic control technology. Jason Reyes, Class of ’10 Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Operations (Flight) Bronx, New York “Vaughn College was the ideal place for me. I loved the small class size, my classmates, the rich history of the College, and how my professors always knew my name. I came to Vaughn because of the variety of aviation-based degrees offered, and to receive an education in a great learning environment. Vaughn has provided me with valuable information, specific to my chosen career path, which was much more in depth than I would have received at any other institution.” 11 A Sampling of Vaughn Internships: Landing Your First Position ■■ American Dynamics ■■ Federal Express Thinking Above and Beyond at Vaughn ■■ FlightSafety College means extensive internship ■■ IBM opportunities, the possibility of mixing Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum part-time employment with course ■■ Metropolitan Transit Authority ORBIS for a rewarding career.
