What does it symbolize? Celebrate the 130th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty (October 1886) by taking a compelling look at the idea, the construction and the meaning behind one of the most recognizable symbols of the world. 1678.300 1 Session $19 May 18 Wed 1-2 pm Gladstone Center, Room 105 1945 Manton St, Maplewood Bengala Dye Bengala dyes are natural Japanese dyes, made from soil, environmentally safe and fun to use. Learn about the history and cultural significance of this unique dye as you use it to color a t-shirt, scarf, shawl or bag. Experience the entire process from pre-fixing your item to kneading the dye into the material. There will be 12 colors of dye for you to choose from. Have fun experimenting with this new dye and technique. Materials fee of $7 - $16 depending on the item you choose, payable to instructor in class. You may dye more than one item during class for an additional materials fee. Bring plastic bags to take home your dyed material, a large towel that you don’t mind getting dye on plus a small hand towel. Optional: apron and gloves. At the end of class, you will be bringing home your 6-8 bar batch of soap, ready to use the next day. Bring a clean container to pour/mold soap into (ex: small milk carton, bread pan or plastic food container). Wooden molds may be available for purchase ($30), along with finished soaps, lotions and lip balms. There is a materials fee of $15 payable to the instructor. When your painting turns out really nice, (as I am sure it will) you will be thrilled with your new Favorite hobby. If you are an experienced artist, welcome. There is always much to learn. The “Joy of Painting” may be the highlight of your year! The painting will be in oil which is quite easy to work with. All supplies will be provided. Wear casual paint clothes and bring a bag lunch. Learn a few basics of making your own bath and beauty products. In this participatory class you will be making lip balm, bath bombs, melt-and-pour soaps and sugar scrubs. Approximately 135,000 school-age children have dyslexia in Minnesota. This presentation will introduce you to dyslexia and lead you through a simulation. This class will cover facts vs. myths, warning signs, skill that may be affected, terminology, the latest research, remediation resources and how to advocate. INSTRUCTOR: Evelyn Haselmann is reading coach that specializes in dyslexia. She has spent the past decade understanding learning profiles of children that struggle in school. Students are actively engaged in a structured environment to expand and develop their skills during their out of school time hours. Designed to meet the needs of all families with flexible scheduling including regular and drop-in contract options. Children have the opportunity to develop strong social skills and positive relationships with peers, increase literacy and math skills, participate in individual and group activities, and work on special projects. Program activities include health and fitness, service projects, arts and crafts, creative play, languages and literacy, cooking, science, and much more. In addition to this, off-site field trips and special events take place throughout the year. Because every child has special and unique needs, we strive to work with families to create an atmosphere that encourages growth. UCare members may be eligible for a $15 discount on most classes in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge.
