Speaking of giving gifts, are you aware that the Rules can occasionally be in the gift-giving mode? Many players do not realize this fact as their experience with, and perception of, the Rules is tainted by the penalties that they have incurred over the years. For them, the Rules are more Scrooge-like than Santa-like, as they have received too many “lumps of coal” over the years in the form of penalty strokes. What exactly are the “gifts” that are occasionally available from the Rules? They usually present themselves when you are in the process of taking relief, and the key to discovering these “gifts” on the golf course is having a good working knowledge of the Rules. Without that knowledge, these “gifts” will go unnoticed. Here are a few examples: • You find your ball in a footprint in a bunker. However, in taking your stance, you notice that one of your feet is positioned on a tunnel created by a mole. In this case, the Rule 25 [Abnormal Ground Conditions] “gift” is that you are permitted to drop your ball in the bunker within one club-length of, and no nearer the hole, than the nearest point of relief from the abnormal ground condition, i.e., the cast from a burrowing animal. This enables you to escape from the footprint! • Your ball is completely buried in sand in a bunker. The first Rules “gift” in this situation is courtesy of Rule 12-1 [Searching for Ball; Seeing Ball] which permits you to use your club to dig into the sand to find your ball. After finding your ball, the second Rules “gift” is that you are permitted to improve your lie by replacing the ball in the bunker so that you can see part of the ball. See Decisions 12-1/1 [Searching with Clubhead for Ball Covered by Sand in Bunker] and 12-1/2 [Ball Covered by Sand in Bunker Removed from Buried Lie During Search]. • Your approach shot to a green is wide right and there is a tree blocking your next shot to the hole. Thus, it is reasonable for you to play sideways to avoid the tree. In taking your stance for that shot, you notice that your right foot is positioned on the cart path. The Rules “gift” here is from Rule 24-2 [Immovable Obstruction] that allows you to take relief from the cart path by finding the nearest point of relief and then dropping your ball within one club-length of that point no closer to the hole. This should result in an improved, if not clear, path to the hole for your next shot! • Your ball is in thick rough within a foot or two of the fairway. When you take your stance, you discover that you are standing on a sprinkler head. In taking relief from this immovable obstruction via Rule 24-2, you are permitted to drop within one club-length of the nearest point of relief no closer to the hole. Using your driver to measure the one club-length area for dropping, you will be able to drop your ball on the fairway, thereby escaping the thick rough! • Your ball comes to rest in a water-filled ditch marked as a lateral water hazard. In the immediate vicinity of where your ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, there are a number of bushes that would interfere with your next stroke if you elected to drop within two club-lengths of where your original ball entered the hazard. Here, the Rules “gift” is the option under Rule 26-1(c)(ii) [Relief for Ball in Water Hazard] to drop a ball within two club-lengths of a point on the opposite margin of the hazard equidistant from the hole to where your original ball last crossed the margin of the hazard. With no bushes on that side of the ditch, you will then have a clear shot to the green! 13 UPCOMING CHAPTER/DIVISION TOURNAMENTS Central Chapter Date Tournament/Event Site Register 1/5/2015 Central Chapter Dogfight River Forest Call 478-974-0974 Opens 12/23/2014 1/19/2015 Central Chapter Dogfight Houston Lakes Call 478-218-5252 Opens 1/6/2015 East Chapter Date Tournament/Event Site Register 1/19/2015 East Chapter Pro-Am King & Prince GC Register Here Deadline: 1/16 10 A.M.
