PRICELESS SUMMER EDITION ELEVEN Life Starts Here! FRIDAY 23RD MARCH 2012 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK MURRAY TO MOYNE For Our Hospital T hanks to the efforts of dedicated individuals behind the scenes; and then to the fit folk who do the riding (after chasing great sponsorship), our local hospital has benefitted to the tune of around $57,000 over the eight years that we have been involved in the Murray to Moyne. The Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay had a humble beginning, when in 1987, Hester Woodrup and a team of Port Fairy women challenged her husband, Graham ‘Woody’ Woodrup, the Port Fairy Apex Club and another team of local identities to ride in relay from the Murray River in Mildura to the Moyne River in Port Fairy. That very first ride, which raised money for the Port Fairy Hospital, started at 2pm on Saturday afternoon and, riding through the night, was completed within 24 hours. Right from the first ride ‘Woody’ saw the potential for the event and his dynamic personality and enthusiasm in those early years established the M2M and enabled it to grow into the huge event it has become today. The event has gone from raising $10,000 in 1987 to an estimated $1.3m in 2011 when 1,204 riders representing 150 organisations LOCAL RADIO Alpine Radio 96.5 FM In the Kiewa Valley Alpine Radio 92.9 FM In the Ovens Valley Emergency Services Broadcaster Mount Beauty Community Radio for good music, local news, snow reports and developing programs.. Summer 2012 Edition ELEVEN Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK AMAZING EVENTS All Good T he weather has been an issue in recent times and the first couple of 3 Peaks suffered because of it. But this year was superb - all round. The Audax Alpine Classic (late Jan) was held in clear weather. The Triathlon (early Feb) enjoyed an excellent day after some doubtful reports. The Labour Day weekend for the 3 Peaks and the Conquestathon was superb and last weekend - after excessive rains in the days before - brought clear skies for the runners in the Alpine Challenge. The Conquestathon saw good numbers (almost 200) enjoy the day and make it to the top of Victoria’s finest - a great feeling. Well done to the local Lions Club members for continuing this great popular event. The weekend later saw several locals who were busy with other sports on the long weekend, take to the track and achieve their goal of reaching the Summit - thereby crossing that one off the list - even if their legs were letting them know. Jason Nightingale joined the team to climb to the Summit - as the result of losing a bet on Darts on Saturday night and looked pretty good afterwards. Over $125,000 in contributions returned to this community since opening Dec ‘07! Ph: 03 5754 4484 28 Hollonds Street, Mount Beauty Overall, climbing Mt Bogong is an important aspect of the attractions in this area and climbing it should be on everyone’s agenda. Of the locals that did the 3 Peaks Challenge this year, Andrew Mero shaved 2 hours and 40 minutes from his previous time of 13 hours. He commented that “the organisation was so much better this year than last year, which made the whole event much more enjoyable.” Andy also said it was great to see locals supporting the event by manning check points around the course and “encouraging everyone as they came past.” Other locals were Craig Docherty (1st time), Mark Weir and Franno Jackson (for the third time) and an ex Falls Creeker, the slim Ned Woolley did it for the first time. Mark can be quoted as saying “the best one ever!” Double the number of entrants took part in last weekend’s Alpine Challenge (160km, 100km & 60km) run around the high Hand cyclist Gary Connor (with his mate Ray Losionek) achieved a brilliant 165km this year, 25km better than last year. Pic - Ken Bell. plains and after a very wet lead up, the event proved to be a huge success. Based at Bogong Village, the organisers were particularly pleased with the support of the locals and the service and support provided by the team at Bogong Jacks and the village in general. Fatigue is a major cause of accidents and can overwhelm a driver in a matter of moments. Allow plenty of time to reach the destination and treat the holiday as starting from the time you leave home (not at the time you reach your destination). Treating your trip as part of the holiday encourages you to enjoy the travel and plan to do things with the kids while on route. This will take the tension out of the drive, allowing time for regular stops and will keep you safer. Impatience leads to accidents. Just because some other idiot does something stupid, there is no need for you to try and demonstrate your superiority. Let the idiot go and keep well clear. The time difference between driving rashly and taking care will only mean several minutes difference over 500km. In the juniors, the U17’s semi final proved to be a bowlers’ game. Mount Beauty restricted Kiewa to 120, with all bowlers performing superbly. Tom McMahon (3/13) and Ash Tonn (2/23) were the multiple wicket takers. The run chase started poorly, with Mount Beauty quickly reduced to 4/8. Despite a spirited partnership between Nick Iaria and Ash Tonn, Mount Beauty were bowled out for 74 - a disappointing end to the season for the boys, but certainly some promising signs after Christmas. C grade had their final warm up before finals, and with the late withdrawal of Tigga Hall, looked a little light in batting depth. Mount Beauty restricted Baranduda to 7/148 from their 40 overs, with Alfie Powell, Rocket McMahon and Maggie Simpson all picking up two wickets. The chase started well, however the fall of the first wicket at 33 triggered a collapse which saw the boys’ slump to 7/93. Maggie Simpson continued his good form with the bat, making an excellent 47n.o. while carrying the side to an agonising three runs short of victory. B grade headed to Yack for their qualifying final against Kiewa, and despite a delayed start had the game all but wrapped up by tea. Kiewa showed little interest in a fight, meekly surrendering for a paltry 44. This perhaps detracts from the fine bowling performances of Bowser Cook (5/25) and Claw Derrick (2/16), with Sorbent Vandenberg (3/0) mopping up the tail. The chase was more about batting practice, Mount Beauty finishing at 5/198. Strauchanie Best (60no) got some much needed time in the middle, with all other batsmen getting starts. A grade played out a heartbreaking five run loss in their qualifying final against Yack. A fine early bowling performance on day one saw Yack reduced to 4/60 at tea. This became 7/120 with WHAT’S ON MAR PHYSIOTHERAPY A 25th 31st 31st Combined Mount Beauty Service Clubs Fund Raising Dinner & Auction for the Albury Cancer Accommodation Centre. 6:30pm Mount Beauty Community Centre. Pic - Chris Hocking. an hour and a half of play left, however Yack managed to recover to finish the day with 206. Jez Peacock continued his good post-Christmas form with 4/61, while Araldite Pask finished with 4/44 from his 36(?) overs. Mount Beauty’s innings virtually mirrored Yack’s, with the Power slumping to 4/28 then 7/88. A fantastic partnership between Father Time Betheras (60no) and Cowboy McLennan (50) got the Power to within 30 of victory before Cowboy was unluckily run out. Some late hitting and suicidal running saw the team all out on 201 with 2 balls remaining in the game. This week’s games see all 3 senior teams playing semi finals. A Grade travel to Howlong as the ‘lucky loser’ in a must win encounter, B Grade are at home against Howlong, while C Grade are also at home playing Barny/Chiltern.
