27 AUGUST - 11 SEPTEMBER OPEN DAILY 10.00AM-5.00PM
Featuring the work of SU GRIERSON, a visual artist living in Perthshire whose practice utilises
video, image and sound, presenting land and landscape from differing non traditional perspectives.
Working on a project basis, she exhibits in galleries, outdoor locations and other venues in
Scotland and internationally. Su graduated Master of Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art in 1995.
The video project Track & Trace, which is showing at this exhibition, was made with performer
Brigid McCarthy within 3 miles of the Bield. The aim was to create, through human movement,
a form of mapping, re-enacting landscape through its social and organic use patterns.
The Showcase Exhibition in the beautifully landscaped setting of The Bield, which last year
attracted more than 1000 visitors, will include examples of work from many of this year’s
Open Studios (POS) participating artists and makers. It is intended to showcase the range of
work on offer in our 139 venues across Perthshire and will also include three resident artists
who will be happy to talk about their own work or provide information about the event in
general. Free brochures including details of all the artists will be available.
Directions:
Head West from the Perth bypass on the A85 signed to Crieff (Look out for yellow
AA signs for POS.) Turn left at the crossroads to Madderty/Tibbermore. The Bield
entrance is half a mile ahead on the left. Follow signs for parking.
PERTHSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS
Welcome to Perthshire
Open Studios 2016!
This year’s event has over 200 individual artists in 139 studios, workshops and galleries, plus
groups of artists sharing venues, totalling around 300 talented and creative people happy to
show their work to the public. Some will be giving demonstrations and many giving access
to their working spaces in delightful locations which provide the inspiration for their work.
Once again this year is a second, ‘Taster’ exhibition at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, in addition
to our regular Showcase exhibition at The Bield, both of which have work from artists right
across the region.
This guide helps you plan your visits: choose a route, or a particular form of art that interests
you and use the coloured maps and the directory to make the most of the time you have to
spend. Cafés and other eating places along the way are highlighted, to help you plan an enjoyable
day out in the stunning scenery of Perthshire and Kinross-shire. 20,000 brochures will be
distributed across the region and beyond. Check our website perthshireopenstudios.com
for details of where to obtain copies.
As the new Chairman of Perthshire Open Studios, I have been impressed by the hard work
and commitment of the team who organise this event and by the artists and makers themselves
who participate year after year, ensuring that we have an impressive range of work on offer to
the public. I would also like to thank our sponsors for their generosity and for their confidence
in us by supporting us again this year.
A warm welcome awaits you, our visitors, at each and every venue!

a growing reputation for his paintings of rural and urban
Scotland which are both detailed and atmospheric.

I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1995
and then gained a wealth of experience working as a
silversmith at Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh. In 2013
I moved to Blairgowrie and set up my own workshop.
My work incorporates contrasting metals and textures
and much of the silverware is “hand raised”, a technique
of creating form from a flat sheet of metal using only
hand tools.
Directions: From Perth on the A93 through Blairgowrie,
pass the cottage hospital and take the 3rd left into Lochy
Street. Straight ahead at the cross roads and turn right
into Lochy Terrace. The Cedars is on the left overlooking
the bowling green.

I have been working with glass for a number of years,
initially stained glass/glass painting and more recently
fused glass and ultimately including these elements in
sculptural forms. My emphasis is on individual design
and striving to create fascinating textures and light
patterns combined with natural, sustainable and
traditional materials.
I work in oils, specialising in garden scapes with birds
and butterflies. I am also inspired by the wild flowers
of Perthshire and Andalucia. For me, every painting is
a journey, negotiating through possibilities and disorder,
until a final resolution – something which ‘rings true’,
in the movement and balance of the colours.

John Picken - trained as an architect (GSA) & practised
in Tayside until 2011. An interest in people, places and the
built environment provides inspiration for his curvilinear,
cubistic representations of urban landscapes. The harbor
and reed beds at Port Allen became an ongoing
obsession; he continues to create works exploring them.
His cubist work has progressed to sculpture with work
in stone and wood.

My painting currently is a response to the Hebridean
Islands and Perthshire. When I look at the landscape
I am also present within it and involved in its every
changing process. My work is not a copy of what I see,
rather a search for balance between abstraction and
representation. My painting process pits expressive
mark making against the fluid materiality of poured,
smeared and dripped paint.

The majority of my pots are made for specific locations
outdoors. I use traditional coiling techniques to build varying
shapes and sizes. My glazes and textures are inspired by
what I see from my window, particularly the ever-changing
sky. I also make individual tiles and tile panels – the current
range is the result of a recent visit to Japan and Korea and
reflects impressions of those countries.

My inspiration comes from journeys and the traces left
by what has gone before. Ripples left in the sand by the
tide, or footsteps on the beach, tracks on the hillside left
by wildlife or the patterns left by heather burning. I aim to
capture these marks painting and drawing on location, and
later from photos and memory in my studio. Ceramics is
another way of expressing form, texture and colour.

I am an established professional member of Visual Arts Scotland.
My preference is creating texture and using an expressive
medium. Oil & beeswax, collage, ink, print on hand made paper,
collograph layers, added & subtracted keep the painting fluid,
until the image starts to appear. If you like paintings that will
make you think then you will enjoy a visit.
Directions: In Perth follow signs for Black Watch Museum.
Balhousie Avenue is immediately opposite the main gate.
My studio is in the first Victorian semi-detached house

Since opening my own studio in 2002 I have worked to
enhance the skills I gained over the 22 years I spent at
Perthshire Paperweights, developing my own techniques
in lampwork utilising glass rods, granules and powders.
This has enabled me to produce animals, birds and insects
in coloured glass which I then mount on agate or stone.
Every piece is unique, perfect to give as a gift or to collect.
I am a contemporary mixed media painter, sculptor
and photographer. My inspiration comes mainly from
my imagination, landscape and nature which I combine
in a sophisticated way. In my sculptures I want to show
feelings and emotions. You are invited to a journey
into an unknown and unreal world… my world.

Born & brought up in Perth, I am a Fine Art graduate of
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, where I studied
Drawing & Painting. I paint large oils on canvas and also
enjoy using pastels to create smaller works. Inspired by
the Scottish landscape, if not painting I am usually out
walking with my camera…& my dog. I work from my
studio in the shadow of Huntingtower Castle adjacent
to Perth Lade.
June attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, the city of her birth. As an artist she has diversified
and includes mural painting, heraldry, organising residential weekends, teaching classes for adults and children, in the
varied skills she offers. ‘Having been asked to create willow golfers for the Ryder Cup, I find that willow has become
the biggest part of my artistic life’

While my work is essentially abstract, I am inspired by natural things and the landscape in which I live, particularly plants
and trees. I begin with a rough idea of what I’d like to create. Then the piece shapes itself as my hands work the clay.
My studio sits amidst the Perthshire hills, with wonderful views towards Schiehallion (the “fairy mountain”) and over
the valley of the Tay and the Lyon.

Jamie Grant is a freelance writer and photographer based
in Highland Perthshire. He has recently returned from
the remote sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia where
he spent 50 days as artist in residence. This exhibition
shows his photographs featuring stunning mountains,
glaciers, penguins, elephant seals and abandoned whaling
stations. His book Summer in South Georgia, has just
been published.

I paint mainly in acrylic in bright vibrant colours combining
loose brush marks with detailed work. My inspiration
is the countryside and architecture of Scotland, with a
focus on Highland Perthshire. In addition to larger framed
pieces I have small paintings and sketches of animals and
birds. Cards, prints, table mats, coasters and china mugs
of my artwork are also available.

At Kins Furniture I produce contemporary bespoke
furniture and customisable products. Hardwoods such
as Oak, Ash and Elm are moulded, shaped and oiled to
produce beautiful furniture. I produce stools, benches,
coffee tables, mirrors, side tables, bookcases etc. I have
a range of products and I accept commissions.
A professional artist for over 15 years, Lindsay Turk is
now based in Aberfeldy. Her work explores themes
of fragility and transience: fleeting or elusive moments
that by being stilled can be appreciated for longer and,
ironically, made more permanent. Painting in series and
looking at life cycles in nature are also recurring themes.

The Station Cat Pottery is housed in a former cattle
byre, in beautiful Highland Perthshire. I create my own
unique style of rustic pottery – functional Candlesticks &
Bowls & whimsical Hens & Horses. I work mainly in black
sculptural clay & introduce colour with glazes & acrylics.
Often I try to incorporate ‘things’ found around the
Farm…a pebble from the Tay or a piece of railway sleeper.
Directions: Station Cat Pottery is situated just off the
A9 on the A827 Aberfeldy Road. Coming from the A9
the Farm drive is exactly at the “Logierait” sign on the

At Murray & Murray we like things that last, things that are
thoughtfully designed, fit for purpose and a pleasure to
use. That is why we are delighted that we ourselves are
still going strong 25 years after we began. More than
simply prized possessions, our furniture becomes part of
our customers’ story, admired, appreciated and used over
and over again – and we like that.
