It’s hard to believe summer is coming to an end and fall is right around the corner! I’d like to take a moment to thank Chris Richard for all his hard work putting on the State Fair Bid Calling Contest. His organization and attention to detail did not go unnoticed and the contest was top-notch! Despite the wet weather, it was an excellent showcase of the talent in our association & the auction method of marketing, and the board & volunteers really stepped up to help Chris pull off this great event! Thank you to all involved. Also congratulations to our newly crowned champion, Jerick T. Miller, and our top 5 finalists, as well as all those who competed. You all represented the auction industry in a great way! The board gathered for another meeting the evening prior to the contest. We discussed our financial report and our membership report. We currently have 272 members paid for 2015, which is great. If you know someone looking to join the IAA, make sure to invite them and help us boost those numbers for 2016. We also received a 2016 Convention report from President Elect Martha Boyle. The 2016 Annual Convention will be held February 5-7, 2016 at the Courtyard Marriott in Ankeny, and we’ll look forward to hearing more of the details from Martha in our next newsletter. Joan & Martha have met with the staff and it sounds like there will be some positive changes in place to make the convention an even better experience. Put the date on your calendar now so you can make plans to attend! The board meeting continued with discussion on the Bid Calling Contest & Finals and Marketing Committee. Different ideas were discussed and tabled until our next meeting in November. One quick thing to mention is if you haven’t liked our Iowa Auctioneers Association Facebook Page, please do so! We try our best to use it as a tool to market news & information to our members and the public. We moved onto the National Auctioneers Association Report, were we heard from some of the members that were at the National Conference & Show in Addison, TX in July. The IAA donated a package to our 2016 Convention to the Fun Auction, and we hope to welcome the winning bidder from Minnesota to our convention! It sounds like Iowa was well represented throughout the conference, with many members in attendance. Several IAA members competed in the IAC Contest and IAA past champion Emily Wears finished as 2nd Runner Up in the Women’s Division! Our current rookie champion, Jeremy Garber, was the champion in the International Junior Auctioneer Championship (IJAC). Congratulations Jeremy! 641-842-3055 - 606 E Robinson, Knoxville IA 50138 In other business, we briefly touched on Member Ethics, with plans to discuss it more in November. Remember, as an IAA member, you agreed to abide by our code of ethics. Each and every member should do their best to act with honesty & integrity, while conducting their auction business in an ethical manner. As an IAA member, it is your right to use our IAA logo on your website & in your advertising. Once membership has lapsed, an auctioneer is no longer able to use that logo. If you know of an auctioneer who is no longer a member, but is still using our logo, please let the office know so the issue can be addressed. I answered with a statement along the lines that “rain or shine, it’s auction time.” How many times have you auctioned in the rain? Sometimes those are the best auctions when it is raining. It was not a picture perfect day, but I am sure for our new champion Jerick T. Miller, it was a perfect day for an auction. Congrats to Jerick, he will be a fine ambassador for the IAA and the auction method of marketing. called and interview me about the contest and auction profession. There is something about the auction industry that peaks interest from the general public, so you never know when you may be asked for an interview. As auctioneers we are the voice that promotes our own auctions and to be able to communicate and answer questions that the general public may have about the auction profession. It takes more than one individual to make a contest like ours run smoothly. One of my favorite sayings is “I love it when a plan comes together.” It was great to see everyone on the IAA board come together and do a great job with the task before them. No one complained about being in the rain, they focused and executed their jobs seamlessly. I want to say THANK YOU, to the IAA board, the contestants, the judges and everyone that came out to support the IAA at the Iowa State Fair. Again, thanks to everyone who made the contest a success. It was definitely a different perspective for me on this side of the “fence.” photo Also Iowa Public Television and other media outlets were in attendance for the contest. Jerick T. Miller and Leroy Hoffman both were interviewed by IPTV before the contest and both represented the IAA very well. Make sure to go to the Iowa Auctioneers Facebook page and view the IPTV highlight reel of the contest. IPTV did an excellent job of interviewing contestants, Even though it was raining, the spotlight was on the IAA and the auction judges and capturing the action of this year’s auction contest. I have method of marketing. Yes, we did crown a champion, but after winning already heard many people comment about seeing the contest on TV, Jerick said it best, “It’s not about the individual, but it’s about the which is great to see this exposure for the IAA. Association. Today the Iowa Association is the winner, not me.” If you missed being at the contest you can purchase a professionally I agree with Jerick’s comments, even though we may focus on who won made DVD of the contest for only $10. If you were a contestant take that day, the contest is greater than any one individual. It is about the IAA advantage of this opportunity as it is a great learning tool to view yourself and showcasing and promoting the auction method of marketing across selling items and see how you can improve for next year. Alright, they were terrible. But, as we all know, auctions don’t stop for the rain. As we move into the fall auction season, time gets shorter and the days get longer.
