Guard is right here in
landlocked Knoxville,
TN? And did you also
know that they are
here to serve and protect our ability to boat
safely?
One of the services that they provide is a
friendly and FREE, that’s right FREE, courtesy inspection of your boat. They are not out
on a witch hunt to find “violators”, but rather
want to reach out to
boaters to educate
and help them make
sure that they have all
the required safety
equipment on board,
with the ultimate goal
of keeping everyone
safe on the water. So
how does it work?
During the month of
June, a US Coast
Guard Vessel Examiner will visit the club
and make themselves
available to inspect
your boat. There are no fines or penalties if
they find anything lacking. The only thing
you will get is friendly advice and suggestions
on how to make your boat safe.

And if you pass inspection you get a FREE
US Coast Guard inspection sticker. When affixed prominently on your boat, it will demonstrate to law enforcement agencies (such as
the TWRA, Coast Guard, Homeland Security,
etc.) that you have been inspected successfully. They will know that you are a safe boater
and will be less likely to board and inspect
you out on the water. After all, there are plenty of other boats out there that don’t have a
clue about safety that these officials will need
to focus their attention.
So there is absolutely
no downside to taking part in this opportunity. All you have
to do is show up at
the club on the following dates and find
the inspector (who
will be located in the
breezeway of the
clubhouse if not currently inspecting a
boat).

The 2014 Rocky Top Regatta was drier than
last year’s monsoon-plagued event, and as
a result participation was up. Eleven boats
came to the line on Saturday, three in nonspinnaker and 8 in the spinnaker class. The
wind was challenging, though, with periodic
“Loudon lulls” and little pockets of good
air resulting in widely disparate speeds at
times. John Tyner (Holder 20) won with
Frank Larimer (Santana 20) and Jeff Gamey
(Holder 20) rounding out the top 3. John
Bocko handily won the non-spin class. Racing was abandoned after one race when the
breeze died completely. Sunday’s delayed
start resulted in better wind, and three races. Jeff Gamey with crew Todd Weir had 2
bullets, and Johnny Ballatin (Viper 640) had
the other bullet. John Bocko (Helms 25)
dominated the non-spin class with three
bullets, and new skipper Don Busby (Holder
20) got faster in each successive race to
capture 2nd. Overall results in the spin
class were Jeff Gamey 1st, John Tyner
(Holder 20) 2nd ,and Jason Williams (Holder
20) 3rd in a tiebreaker over Frank Larimer.

Participants in the last 3 years of LWS were
spoiled with balmy winter weather and consistent winds. That all changed, of course,
this year. The cold winter wreaked havoc
on the schedule of this year’s LWS with
many races cancelled due to cold, or in
some cases, lake ice! The usually reliable
winds were spotty as well, resulting in several no-wind cancellations. On the bright
side, a total of 15 skippers participated in
this year’s series. A total of 28 races were
run over 11 Sundays, even though no races

were run in November or December. John
Tyner (Holder 20) with crew Brent Pilon and
Ellie Tyner sailed consistently well to garner
top honors for the series. Ron Mitchell (San
Juan 24)entered the fray with a fresh bottom job and finished comfortably in 2nd
place. Chuck Meyer (Santana 20) finished
in 3rd, with Vlasta Kunc (Holder 20) close behind in 4th, despite sailing in only 8 races. Next year we can hope the Polar Vortex
stays up North where it belongs.

not all. He has also been,
and continues to be heavily involved in Concord
Sailing Center (CSC), currently serving as its Vice
President. In addition to
his activities at our sailing club, Bryson is also an
advocate for the Teen
Board of Knoxville.
Who is that who has gone
from toddling around
CYC in diapers to become
one of our club’s esteemed leaders?
This
young man was raised
with a sheet line in his
hands and has done just
about everything a person can do at CYC. And
he isn’t even 30 years old
yet! Yes, Bryson Bosson
is as much a fixture at
Concord Yacht Club as is
the yard arm behind the
clubhouse.
Bryson is a hometown boy, born and
raised in Knoxville, but left Tennessee for
a short time to earn his degree in Public
Affairs Management from Indiana University. He has already put that degree to
good work as an operations project manager in the financial management sector
with Knoxville’s own Clayton Bank and
Trust. In this role, he develops, oversees
and audits all deposit system operations in
East Tennessee. He also works with Clayton’s client services group to oversee credit
card processing, remote check scanning
and online banking system setups.
So with such a busy professional career,
what does Bryson have time to do at the
club? A lot.
Bryson is leveraging his professional experiences to benefit CYC by serving on the
Board as Assistant Treasurer. But that is
So how did Bryson Bosson
get involved in sailing?
Well, Bryson’s legacy has
a long history at the club.
Bryson’s grandparents were members
back in the 1970s, and they took every opportunity to sail and to introduce their
grandson to the sport. As well, Bryson’s
mother and uncles have always been avid
sailors. In fact, it was one of Bryson’s uncles that first introduced him to sailing on
the Fox River at the age of 4, and again on
Lake Michigan at the age of 6, sailing out
to the Chicago water supply pumping stations and back.
Not long thereafter
Bryson began attending CYC sail camp in
1997 and came back to camp every summer until 2003. Yes, that is seven straight
years of sail camp!
Having aged out of sail camp, Bryson did
the only thing an avid young sailor can do.
He continued on in the high school sailing
program. And somewhere along the way…
actually in 2000…Bryson officially joined
the club as a student member. He became
an “official” member in 2009 after graduat(Continued on page 5)

ing from college and currently falls under
the “Young Active” membership status; a
testament to the excellent membership options available to young people at CYC
which allows membership at an early age
without the financial strains of a regular
“older person” membership.
Although Bryson has been involved in racing, if asked, he would classify himself as
more of a casual cruising day sailor. What
exactly does that mean? Well, more often
than not he can be seen out sailing in his
Phantom 14 with feet kicked up just enjoying the simplicity of the Sunfish type boat.
And while he still enjoys crewing for others
in races, he has really grown to love sharing the sport with others through his involvement in CSC; helping kids and adults
alike learn the power of the wind and the
skill of such a unique activity.
And speaking of his Phantom 14, Bryson’s
most memorable sailing experience occurred on just that boat. The first spring
he owned it, Bryson and his mom went out
for a sail, but had no idea that the dagger
board trunk had a sizable leak which began
filling the inner hull very quickly once they
got out sailing in fairly strong winds. They
were merrily zipping along until they
tacked and the water came crashing across
the inner hull and unceremoniously capsized the boat. Luckily Chuck Flett was
out windsurfing and quickly came to the
rescue. While some college sailors brought
Bryson and mom back to shore, Chuck
managed to right the boat and sail the waterlogged boat back to shore with the waterline near the top of the gunwales. But
Chuck wasn’t finished yet. He was also
kind enough to repair the gash in the boat
so Bryce could get back out on the water.

It is that kind of unsolicited aid; help that
goes well beyond the call of duty that
makes being part of CYC so satisfying.
Bryson still sails that Phantom 14 and it
remains the only boat that he owns.
Besides sailing, Bryson also loves to travel.
With no spouse or kids, he is well positioned to be footloose and set out on some
travel adventures. Perhaps in 2014, if you
happen to be travelling in Geneva, Capetown, or the Maldives, you will see
Bryson…sailing a Phantom 14 (or some
other sailing craft) around these destinations that he has set his sights on. Just
don’t stay away too long, Bryson. Your absence from CYC would be missed.

Spring 2014 has been a busy time for CYC-CSC
Outreach! We kicked off our efforts this year with
our inaugural participation in Outdoor KnoxFest,
which serves to highlight all of East Tennessee's
outdoor activities. Being the first year of our participation, we were spotlighted in front of Legacy
Park's Gateway Building at Volunteer Landing.
Bill and Sue Shaffer recounted their adventures in the Caribbean while other volunteers taught
knots and shared information about CYC. This event was done in conjunction with the firstannual CYC Open House, held May 3rd, alongside the Admiral Farragut Regatta. With some
great sailing to watch, the Open House brought out a small crowd, but a strong showing of
East Tennesseans interested in sailing! Via the Open House, CSC was able to display all of
the programs offered on top of CYC membership (and who doesn't enjoy a beautiful afternoon
spent at the lake)!
Most recently, Sail Camp was again promoted through Knox
County Public Library's Festival of Reading. Drawing over
5,000 visitors, CYC and CSC volunteers handed out Sail
Camp bookmarks to celebrate the Library's summer reading
program as well as Sail Camp.

Lastly, on June 7th we participated in the first
Farragut “Go & Glow Outdoor Night,” at the Farragut Kroger. This was our last event which we
used to promote everything sailing in East Tennessee. This was a new venue where visitors
were excited to try new and exciting adventures!

really do appreciate your hard work!
In all, community outreach is a simple, yet powerful tool for getting CYC involved in the community. By getting out there and showing others
what CYC & CSC can do and who we are, we
can better connect with our community as
"Knoxville's Sailing Center!"
They’re doing a great job, don’t you think? Are Sea
Scouts getting younger as the photo suggests? Not really. Sea Scouts are boys and girls age 13 & 8th grade to
age 21. In addition, Ship 300 seeks adult volunteers
who are able to attend meetings on a regular basis. If

Ship 300 welcomes aboard two new members in May,
Halsey and Madalen Howard. Halsey attends Webb
School and Madalen will be attending the College of
Charleston, where Greg Fisher will pick up her sailing
skill as coach of the CofC sailing team. Plus, Ship 300 is
anticipating four more new members coming aboard .
