Year 13, #153
animal adoption, rescue and education in athens and surrounding communities
on the cover….
TM
Critter Magazine TM is an animal adoption publication
dedicated to improving the quality of life for animals by
promoting awareness, and by showcasing homeless
animals who are in need of loving homes. Although the
majority of animals profiled are dogs and cats, we will
feature any animal in need of adoption.
We publish the first Thursday of each month and
distribute in Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Madison, Jackson, Elbert and Barrow Counties. Advertising and editorial
deadline is the last Thursday of the month.
We welcome any comments and suggestions, as well as
informative articles and stories which are relevant to our
goals.Subscriptions are available for $24 per year. Critter TM
cannot screen either potential adopters or animals. We
urge all parties to be responsible in these matters.

Katie: Katie is an unbelievably sweet 3 year old female Pit Bull
Terrier. She has a big ol' heart and an endless amount of love
for humans. She just can't get enough and, typical of the breed,
Katie thinks she is a 60 pound lap dog! We just can't believe
what an amazing dog this girl is. We are currently looking for
preferably an only dog foster and/or permanent home for Katie.
We would like to see someone who has experience with bully
breeds become Katie's future owner or foster home. If interested, please call True Love Canine Rescue at 706.206.7127

Our Pets Are Family Too: Estate Planning and Pet Trusts
When it comes to wills, trusts and estate planning, we all
commonly think of the children, the parents, the siblings
and the friends as those most important to provide or
care for upon your death. Many times, though, the pets
either get overlooked in the entirety or carelessly mentioned as a will beneficiary but with no real inheritance or
care guarantees.
Leona Helmsley had the right idea for her dog, Trouble,
leaving it $12,000,000.00 in trust for all its worldy needs
(and a security detail due to kidnapping and death
threats). A court later reduced this amount to
$2,000,000.00.
Unfortunately, because so few people make proper arrangements for their pets after they pass away, approximately 500,000 are euthanized each year, either because there is no animal directive for the estate executor
or the person entrusted to care for the pet is no longer
able or willing to take the pet. In both instances, the pet
is too often left abandoned or taken to the rescue or
pound.
There is a solution to this problem. In 1990, the National
Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws
adopted a provision in the Uniform Probate Code allowing for the creation of pet trusts. Since this time, 42
states and the District of Columbia have adopted and
codified the UPC language or some similar version.
Georgia currently is not one of those states.
Even though Georgia has not yet passed pet trust legislation, pets can still be protected through carefully drafted
traditional legal trust documents. A caregiver and at least
one alternate must be chosen. This should be the person
you will trust the most to care for your pet. You must also
choose a trustee and alternate. This is the person who will
distribute the funds from the trust to the caregiver for the
benefit of the pet. The trust can be created either by funding the trust while you are alive (called a living trust) or by
making the trust a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or
retirement savings plan that disperses funds immediately
upon your death (called a testamentary trust).
There are distinct differences between using a will or a
trust to provide for your pet. Perhaps the most important
difference is timing. The trust, whether living or testamentary, takes effect immediately upon your death, meaning
that there does not have to be a break in continuity of the
care of your pet. However, wills must be probated and can
be contested, making the process timely and uncertain
and can leave your pet’s care in limbo.
There are many more factors in planning for your pet’s
care after you have passed away and this article is by no
means meant to be exhaustive. The point here is that pets
can and should be considered in the estate planning process. After all, isn’t your pet just as much a part of your
family as any other relative?

The Madison-Oglethorpe Animal Shelter located next to the transfer
station on Colbert-Danilesville Road in Danielsville has an in-house
spay-neuter clinic open to serve the general public for low-cost sterilization of puppies, kittens, dogs and cats. As a shelter we deal with
thousands of unwanted and stray animals every year, many of whom
don’t find homes. You can help cut down on those numbers by sterilizing your pets. We understand that the expense of having this done is
often a factor so we offer drastically reduced prices on all sterilizations. We do pediatric sterilizations on puppies and kittens as young as
eight weeks of age. Call Today to schedule your appointment- (706)

Surgery
If your pet is scheduled for elective surgery, such as
spaying, neutering or dental prophylaxis, there are several things you can do ahead of time to insure that the
operation goes well and the patient recovers quickly.
First, improve your pet's diet, physical exercise and
exposure to natural light. These simple steps increase
stamina, healing and resistance to infection.
Nutritional Therapy:
Beginning two weeks before surgery, increase vitamin
C, using a high quality vitamin C complex such as esterC calcium ascorbate with bioflavonoids and other Ccomplex nutrients or vitamin C derived from food
sources, NOT ascorbic acid. Give 1,000mg vitamin C
per 25 pounds of body weight, divided into two or three
doses during the day; if this dosage produces loose
stools, reduce the amount until this side effect disappears. Continue vitamin C at this dosage until one
week after the surgery.
Beginning three weeks before surgery, give the animal
a good-quality vitamin E complex derived from natural
food sources, NOT synthetic vitamin E. Give 800IU
vitamin E per day to cats and small dogs, 1,000IU to
dogs weighing 15 to 35 pounds, 1,200IU to large dogs
weighing 40 to 85 pounds and 1,500IU to giant
breeds. Discontinue vitamin E supplementation seven
to ten days before the surgery because vitamin E thins
the blood. After surgery, resume the recommended
dose for an additional week. If your pet's breed is
known for bleeding problems, have a blood test done
before surgery and, if your animal has a clotting disorder, follow your veterinarian's recommendations regarding supplements.
Beginning two weeks before surgery, provide additional
vitamin A by giving dogs fresh, raw carrot juice or pureed carrots. 1/8 to 1/4 cup per 10 pounds of body
weight divided into two or three servings during the
day. For cats, and dogs who don't like carrots, give
additional liver, vitamin A or a mixed carotene vitamin:
give 10,000IU per day to cats and medium size dogs
and twice that amount to large and giant breeds, divided into two or three doses during the day. Continue
these supplements until the day before surgery and
then for at least a week after surgery.
Beginning one week before surgery, stop feeding garlic,
as garlic is a natural blood thinner that helps prevent
clotting.
Flower Essences:
Beginning two or three days before surgery, place several drops of Bach Rescue Remedy (or I like to use Nature's Sunshine Products "Distress Remedy") or yarrow
flower essence in the animal's water and, twice a day,
in his or her mouth, behind the ears and on the abdomen. At the same time, practice Therapeutic Touch,
massage the ears and project positive, healing
thoughts, picturing your healthy pet making a fast re-

covery. After surgery, use either of the recommended
flower essence formulas several times a day while your
pet recovers.
Before Surgery:
On the day before surgery, feed the animal an early dinner (late afternoon) and do not provide food after
6pm. Withhold water after 8pm. Continue treating with
flower essences and Therapeutic Touch. Do the same
before leaving the house and again at the veterinary
clinic.
After Surgery:
Greet your pet with Bach Rescue Remedy and a
hug. Wait two or three hours before giving food or water, then provide ample clean water to help clear traces
of anesthetic from the system. When your pet is hungry,
give a soft food such as yogurt/kefir, soft fruit or pureed
meat.
Herbal Therapy:
Apply any healing tea to the wound, such as a strong
infusion of calendula blossoms or plantain leaf with a few
drops of grapefruit seed extract and a pinch of unrefined
sea salt. Because comfrey will cause the skin to heal
rapidly, it's a good idea to wait until stitches are removed
so that they aren't embedded under the skin's surface. After that, use a comfrey tea, poultice or salve to
speed healing. Vitamin E, rose hip seed oil and aloe vera
all promote rapid healing without scarring; apply any of
these every few hours at first, then two or three times a
day.
Calming nervine herbs like chamomile, valerian or skullcap may help your pet relax and sleep.
Homeopathy:
After surgery, if your pet is groggy, nauseated or slow to
wake up, give a single pellet or tablet of homeopathic
Phosphorus 30c. Arnica 30c is the all-purpose follow-up
treatment for surgery; give 1 pellet or tablet every 4
hours for a total of 3 treatments. If the skin is red or
irritated or if there is a discharge of fluid or pus around
the wound or its stitches, give 1 pellet or tablet of

(770) 464-0138
As sad as it is to imagine, there are many horses in Georgia needing
loving homes just as there are cats, dogs, and other “pets”. The problem stems from “over breeding” and a lack of understanding of the requirements for care of these wonderful animals.
Thanks to Georgia laws that protect horses, mules, and donkeys
from starvation and other forms of abuse, the Georgia Department of
Agriculture has the authority to impound equine that are in a critical
situation in accordance with the Georgia Humane Care for Equine Act.
Impounded animals are rehabilitated and many are sold at public auction to new owners which, hopefully, give them a second chance at a
comfortable and useful life.
Auctions are held at frequent intervals as horses become available.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture provides information about each
animal and the auction location on their website at
www.agr.georgia.gov. New owners are requested to enter into an
agreement that the equine may be monitored for one to two years after
the sale.
The Georgia Equine Rescue League, Inc. offers horses for adoption.
These are horses which are donated to GERL for a variety of reasons
by people who find that they are no longer able to care for them. There
is a small “adoption fee” for these horses and they are monitored by

When we get a new puppy, the vet gives us a nice little booklet
that gives us broad outlines of what we need to do. It includes
nutrition outlines and shot schedules needed.
education. Often when I stop, I am told the horse must have
something wrong with him because the pasture is full of stuff.
Either way, it is a horrid way to exist.
When we get our first horse, this does not happen. There is no
such booklet that I can find. If you have a horse vet, he or she
will usually help you make decisions and recommend what
shots and all you need. He may even give you names of farriers. If you call a farm vet who is used to working with farmers,
and experienced livestock owners, you will get nothing except
what you ask for.
The library has several good books on owning your first horse.
There are a lot of sites on line that are great. Go to
www.about.com and type in “your first horse”. All the information
is good, and you will find more information than you have time to
read.
All horses and all ponies, need certain things. They need to
have their hooves attended to by someone who is knowledgeable. They need certain vaccinations each year, including rabies. It amazes me how few people even think about this.
Since horses usually show symptoms of rabies that are not
easily recognized, this is especially important to our families as
well as the horse.
The other consideration is food. A lot of people turn the horse
out with cattle in a huge field. The horses get fat, which leads
to deadly complications. Ponies are especially prone to this,
since they can eat as much as a horse, but were usually developed as a breed to be able to live on sparse pasture.
The other extreme is the horse standing dejectedly in a lot filled
with weeds, which horses can not digest, slowly starving to
death. I see them all too often as I drive through the countryside. Some are victims of willful neglect, some just of lack of

Disaster Relief Animal Rescue (Felines) (Athens)
Bill Koehlke and Sue Jordan - (706) 546-0433
To begin this months article we first want to give
our condolences to Mrs. Kathy Hoard, Athens
Clarke County Commissioner, whose husband Ed
Hoard passed away last week. Words cannot express as to how we feel for her loss. She is one of
our strongest supporters for our cats and kittens.
And we thank her for asking her friends and family
in lieu of flowers to contribute to DRAR. We have
received many generous checks and it will greatly
help our cause.
Now for some noteworthy and sad news regarding
several of our feeding stations. Recently a note
was left at one station by someone who used filthy
language towards Bill and Mike who feed the cats.
This person who also called both of them idiots is
concerned about nature in his writings; also at one
feeding station was tuna with rat poison mixed in
with the food. We have also noticed a decline in the
cat population in that area.
Near one of our feeding places, Sue was contacted
by a rescue group that a family was missing their
family cat, Sally, who had gotten out of the house
and was missing. A day or two later, the family
found their beloved pet mauled and killed by several foxes. So please keep your pets inside and
keep an eye on your children if they are playing
near the wood. Just be cautious.
At another feeding location, someone keeps taking
the dishes and dumping, so our cats cannot eat or
drink. Permission was given for us to feed at this
location by the owner of the property to feed the
four cats that have been spayed and neutered.
They are hurting no one. We noticed three of them
are not showing up to eat lately. If that person is
reading this article, beware, we have people at different times looking out for you.
Well, this one is a new one for us. At a feeding station near a medical building, about fifty feet away
from the building, employees were advised to park
their cars at the front of the building! The building
has ants and complaints were made that the ants
were visible in the employee’s cars when they
parked in the rear lot. Blame was placed on the cat
food, 50 feet from the building in a heavy wooded
area. Note that Bill never saw any ants at the feeding station and each day he sprayed the area to
prevent any problems. As soon as the building and
grass was sprayed by the exterminator, millions of
ants flooded to the wooded area. This was all comical, and we feel that some people didn’t like the
cats that minded their own business and didn’t
bother anyone. Last weekend, we moved out 11
cats and kittens. Believe us, one of the biggest
problems for all feral and stray cats and kittens is
PEOPLE! People created the feral cat problems
and many feel all feral cats should be killed.
We have barn cats, all Fixed and ready for a farm,
ranch or someone who has shelter for them. They
need a caretaker who will feed and water them daily.
They are beautiful cats and victims of Human Beings.
We also have a beautiful Persian who needs a loving home, she was the victim of a rough divorce and
for her years of being a great indoor cat, it was the
death penalty. We heard of the terrible situation and
took her home. She is a beautiful animal and very
loving. She is declawed on all four, so she has to
stay indoors. We also have cats ready for a new
home. All have had theirs shots and vet checked.
The kittens still take the lead in all our time and
money. We need monetary donations or bags of cat
food; we are feeding about a 100 cats daily. Every
cent will go to good use. Bill is spending a bundle of
his own money. Please help us. Your donations are
tax deductible. You can call us or drop money or
food off at Pet Supplies Plus at Alps Shopping Center near Kroger’s. Just tell them it’s for DRAR or Sue
and Bill.
Thank you everyone who is helping with donations,
food and other cat related items.

house trained, pad trained, crate trained and has graduated
beginning obedience. She needs a yard with a fence that deters
climbing, as she does like to take off to play with the neighborhood kids or chase deer. Chloe would love to have a forever
human who can be lovingly firm with their new buddy. Please
email LoveDogsRescue@charter.net or look her up at
www.newrattitude.org/dogs.htm for more info.
