BEE HISTORY
Bee Group Newspapers is Western New York’s leader in
the suburban newspaper field. We publish nine locally
edited newspapers in the communities surrounding Buffalo,
New York.
The Amherst Bee was founded in March 1879 and has
been owned by the same family for more than 100 years.
Through the years, our mission has always been to be a vital
part of the community.
Today, we are part of the ever-changing world of the
Internet and social media. Each of our nine newspapers has
its own website with entirely local content. Merchants can
increase their exposure with banner ads on these popular
websites.
We have expanded our distribution in several
communities through a limited number of free copies, with
96 percent of these copies being picked up each week.

Our readers have a choice in how they
receive their hometown newspaper. Most
prefer the convenience of U.S.-mailed home
delivery. For a small subscription price of
about 67 cents per week, the newspaper is
delivered each week, dry and in their
mailbox. A limited number of free copies are
available in street corner boxes and store
racks in some communities.
Our newspapers have a strong Internet
presence. Each Bee has its own website
featuring the most current edition as well as a
searchable archive dating back several years.
Paid subscribers are able to access the site
immediately; nonsubscribers have full access
three weeks after each date of publication.

2% per month service charge will apply to accounts over thirty(30) days. Minimum monthly
service charge on accounts over thirty(30) days is $2.00 per month. Return check charge $35.00.
Unless advertiser makes written objection within thirty(30) days from the rendering of any bill for
advertising published, such bill shall be conclusive as to the correctness of the items
therein and shall constitute an account stated.
If any action or proceeding is to be commenced to collect the indebtedness, the advertiser
agrees to pay Bee Publications Inc. twenty-five percent(25%) of the unpaid balance due
for its reasonable attorney fees in connection with such action or proceedings.
Contract advertising over 60 days past due subject to adjustment to Open Rate or actual
earned rate at time of adjustment.

Any rate adjustment will be made effective by giving thirty(30) days written notice for contract advertisers. In event of such
increase the advertiser may, at their option, immediately cancel their agreement without being re-billed at higher non-contract
rates. Continuation of advertising at new rate shall constitute acceptance of the rate adjustment.
12.
If for any reason, including failure to pay bill in full within terms, the advertiser does not use the contracted space within the
specified period, they will be re-billed at the correct rate for advertising space actually used.
13.
Political advertising must be paid in advance and contain “Paid Political Ad” within the ad area. Frequency contract rates are
available for political advertising.

Town of Amherst
The Town of Amherst includes the Village of Williamsville
and several distinct “neighborhoods:” Eggertsville, Getzville,
Snyder and Swormville. Amherst was established in 1818,
while the village can trace its origin to 1820. Milling along
Ellicott Creek was the major industry of the mid-19th century,
with the Williamsville Water Mill operating from 1811 until
2004. Nearby, federal troops camped out and convalesced
during the War of 1812. Getzville’s progress hinged on the
“peanut line” railroad. Residential growth in the 1970s was
sparked by establishment of a suburban campus for the State
University at Buffalo.

Town of Clarence
Clarence was established as the first township in Erie County in
1808. At the time, the community included the entire northern
portion of the county as well as a portion of what is now the City of
Buffalo. The first settler to take advantage of lots being sold for $2
an acre without interest was Asa Ransom, a young silversmith and
first official resident of the town. Many Buffalo businessmen fled to
the Harris Hill portion of Clarence when the city was burned by the
British during the War of 1812. One of the first major industries in
Clarence was National Gypsum Company, but the town remains
mainly a residential community today.

Town of TonawandaVillage of Kenmore
Establishment of the Town of Tonawanda centered around an
Indian trail that later became Delaware Road; Military Road
constructed in 1809; and the “North Bush” community along
the present-day Englewood Avenue. The Niagara River, the
Erie Canal, and the Buffalo and Niagara Falls Railroad also
contributed to early prosperity. The Town of Tonawanda was
mainly rural in 1899 when the Village of Kenmore was
formally established. The town’s population doubled from
1950-60, reaching 105,000. It has remained a stable
community despite the overall change from heavy industry
to more high-tech firms.

The Town of Cheektowaga was officially established in
1839, with the first town meeting held in an Inn owned by
Mr. & Mrs. Elnathan Bennet. Part of the town included the
old Buffalo Creek Indian Reservation. A cemetery on Aero
Drive serves as the final resting place for American, British
and Canadian soldiers killed in the War of 1812. In more
modern times, Cheektowaga has prospered through
residential development, industry and popular retail
outlets. The Buffalo Airport was established along Genesee
Street in 1923, and it gradually grew to international status
to serve all of Western New York. Expressways link the
community directly to downtown Buffalo.

Town and Village of Lancaster
Village of Depew
The first settlement in what would become the Town of
Lancaster was near Cayuga Creek, with the first home being
a log house built by Edward Kearney on what is today
known as St. Mary’s Street. The first industry, a saw mill,
appeared in 1808. The Village of Lancaster was created by
popular vote in 1849, with the Village of Depew being
formed in 1894, from lands within both the towns of
Lancaster and Cheektowaga. Broadway served as the
major link to the city of Buffalo, and the area’s
industrial base changed with the times in the 1970s
and 1980s. Lancaster has become a popular site for
new home development.

Town of West Seneca
When land south of Buffalo Creek was set aside by the Holland
Land Company for the Indians, it was named the Buffalo Creek
Reservation. The current town of West Seneca is part of this
property. Then in 1842, a religious group known as the
Community of True Inspiration came to America and settled in
the West Seneca area. Four hamlets were established: Middle
Ebenezer, or Gardenville; Upper Ebenezer, or Blossom, Lower
Ebenezer, or Ebenezer; and New Ebenezer. The community built
Fourteen Holy Helpers Church, and the nearby Heritage Inn was
a book-binding shop. The need for more land forced the group
west in 1862.

Town of Orchard Park

The first white men arrived in what is currently the Town of Orchard
Park in 1803. David Eddy built the first tavern at the famous “four
corners,” and Quakers built their first meeting house in 1820 along
the present East Quaker Road. The name of Orchard Park originally
applied only to the village, which was incorporated in 1921. The
Town of East Hamburg was renamed Orchard Park in 1934. The
railroad had a big influence on early growth, and a trolley connected
Orchard Park with Buffalo in 1900. The town has been home of the
Buffalo Bills football team since 1973.

The Village of East Aurora represents the union of two hamlets, known as
Upper Village and Lower Village. The latter was originally incorporated as
the Village of Willink, name of the chief proprietor of the Holland Land
Company. The first permanent business was a general store at Main Street
and Olean Road, opened in 1815. The adjoining Town of Elma’s first
business was the Bullis Mill, erected about 1826. Other mills appeared later
in Spring Brook and the eastern edge of town. Today, Elma retains the
residential character that attracted members of previous generations.

How To Write A Classified Ad
1.) STATE THE ITEM - Start your ad with the merchandise you are selling or the
position for which you are hiring. Starting with a key word makes it easier for the
reader to locate what it is they are looking for.
2.) GIVE ENOUGH INFORMATION - An ad that is too short may short you of
response. Include brand names, colors and other specific information.
3.) STATE THE PRICE - Always include the price of the item you are selling.
52% of classified readers do not respond to ads that do not include a price.
4.) KEEP ABBREVIATIONS TO A MINIMUM - Make the ad easy for readers to
understand.
5.) BE HONEST - Don’t omit obvious flaws. Readers want to buy from
someone they can trust.
6.) MAKE SURE CUSTOMERS CAN REACH YOU - Just a phone number is
not enough if you will not be at home to take the call. By adding “after 6 pm”
your customer will know exactly when you can be reached.
