CHUCKWAGON CONSTRUCTION RULES
All older wagons are fine, but must still meet safety standards and have a push bar.
1. CONSTRUCTION: All wagons must be made of wood and built according to the stated dimensions.
(See measured drawing & construction plans)
2. AXLE SHAFTS: Axle Shafts must be made of wood. The axles may be greased, but ball bearings
of any kind nay not be used. A metal sleeve may be slid over the wooden axle shaft to protect it from
wear. However, the actual shaft must be made of wooden dowel. A turntable, such as one found on a
swivel chair, may be used on the front steering axle.
3. WHEELS: Wheels must be made of wood. Manufactured wheels, balloon tires of spoked metal
wheels of any kind are not allowed. Aluminum, steel bands or cut rubber bicycle tires may be used on the
circumference of the wheels for the protection from wear.
4. TILLER BAR: The wagon’s tiller bar will be hinged and built up to a point above the bottom of the
wagon to facilitate the maneuvering of the wagon and be at a comfortable height for the boys. (See
measured drawing & construction plans)
5. COVER: The ribs to support the wagon cover may be made of metal pipe, wood, of plastic tubing.
Because of its light weight, 1/2” PVC tubing for its equivalent is recommended.
6. PUSH BAR: A push bar may be added to the rear of the wagon to facilitate in pushing the wagon up
hills or on rough terrain, or for braking.
7. SAFETY: Dowels being used for axle shafts and for pull bars on the tiller will be covered with rubber
caps to help protect the scouts from being scraped, receiving splinters or gouged.
8.INSPECTION: These guidelines have been set up for your benefit in assembling the wagon. You are
asked to maintain these guidelines as close as possible. Remember, these wagons will be inspected and
points awarded for following these rules. Moderate deviations will be allowed, but keep in mind that
these wagons have worked exceptionally well in the past and any major changes could result in loss of
points at the inspection by the commissioners or risk the safety of our Scouts.
9. BEFORE STARTING CONSTRUCTION,RECRUIT OTHER LEADERS, (parents, friends,
plumbers, electricians, handymen ) who might possess the knowlege and the tools to help you.

CHUCKWAGON MEASURED DRAWINGS
CHUCKWAGON DERBY INSTRUCTIONS
TAKE THE TIME TO READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. IT MAY MEAN A
HIGHER SCORE AT THE END OF THE DERBY.
Once the derby begins, wagons will not be permitted to substitute boys: SO BE CERTAIN THAT ALL
BOYS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE WHOLE DAY!!
All boys should be in their Cub Scout Uniform, with neckerchief,and hats (Unit hat will be accepted
providing all boys are the same). Otherwise, points will be lost at inspection. Suitable pants will be
worn.(blue jeans are OK) Make sure all scouts dress for the weather….A coat may be worn with the
uniform.
Wagon crew should consist of 4 to 8 boys and 2 adult leaders. Wagons should consist of a mix of ranks.
INVENTORY: The following items are required to be in each wagon:
Tiger,Wolf, Bear and Webelos Scout Books
Rain Gear for each boy
Pencil and Pad of Paper
1 Hammer
1 Adjustable Wrench
1 Pair of Pliers
1 Screwdriver
1 36” length of Rope for each boy
1 Banner or sign with your unit, town, and chartering organization to be displayed on wagon
(may be wagon cover)
1 Gallon Water in plastic jug with drinking cups for each person
2 Litter Bags
1 Roll of Toilet Paper
1 First Aid Kit (personal kits allowed)
