The Fall 2010 semester is underway with more than 12,000 students enrolled in nearly 50 degree
programs, non-credit courses, workforce training and certificate programs as well as online classes.
Double-digit increases in the number of students enrolling at Onondaga – an increase of 12% in 2009
and nearly 65% over the past decade – reflect a burgeoning demand for the high quality, reasonably
priced higher education alternative that community colleges have long provided. OCC has seen
exponential enrollment growth in those academic programs that are closely aligned with the needs
of employers, such as a new line mechanic/Utility Worker certificate program that was developed
through an innovative partnership with National grid. mindful of busy lives and hectic schedules,
OCC offers flexible scheduling as well as options for online learning, accelerated programs, evening/
weekend, and concurrent enrollment. These alternative delivery methods are so popular that they
now comprise more than 40% the College’s total enrollment. Demand for non-credit programs that provide industry-recognized credentials and customized
workforce training is also on the rise, as employers and employees work to maintain a competitive
edge in the global marketplace. Programs such as leAN six sigma for Healthcare, the Center for
Business Information Technologies (CBIT), and the small Business Development Center are providing
individuals with access to the targeted knowledge and skills that they need. And these programs
are providing our region with the well-trained workforce that is essential for economic vitality.
As public funding for higher education continues to decline, private investment grows increasingly
critical to OCC’s ability to respond to community needs. Fortunately, hundreds of employers and
individuals recognize the enormous benefit of investing in Onondaga Community College, as is
evidenced by the remarkable community response to the Foundation’s capital campaign, reach
Beyond, which achieved its $6 million goal in 2009 and is well on its way to reaching its “super goal”
of an additional $1.5 million dedicated exclusively to student scholarships.
The strong support we receive from our partners and benefactors ensures that the College will
continue to be responsive to the evolving needs of citizens and employers in Central New York. We extend our deepest gratitude to each of you for contributing to the success of Onondaga

For the past 28 years, the OCC Foundation has helped thousands of students ease the financial burden of a
college education. nearly 1,000 students graduated from Onondaga in may 2009, and many of them were
able to attend the College thanks to scholarships and gifts. Without the help of scholarship dollars, the door
to a college education would remain closed for many students.
Onondaga invites donors to contribute to the OCC general scholarship fund to keep the dream of a college
education within reach for prospective students. gifts of $25, $50, $100 or more can make the difference in
helping a student remain on track for success. All contributions are greatly appreciated.

The Onondaga Community College Foundation announced that its $6 million fundraising goal for its Capital Campaign was reached.
The campaign – reach Beyond: the Campaign for Onondaga Community College – consists of four components and was first
launched publicly in November, 2008.
One of the primary components of the Capital Campaign is the Presidential scholars Program. when fully funded, the presidential
scholars program will provide full Onondaga Community College tuition to all high school seniors in Onondaga County who
graduate in the top 10-20 percent of their class.

As increasing numbers of students and local families look to Onondaga Community College for higher education, the Campaign
leadership Committee announced a new “super goal” of $7.5 million. This adds $1.5 million in additional funds to the original goal
of $6 million. These funds will be dedicated specifically to funding student scholarships through the Presidential scholars Program.
“most jobs now require at least a two-year college degree, and that trend will continue into the foreseeable future. All local citizens,
regardless of financial circumstances, must have access to higher education if we are to advance the local economy,” said
Onondaga Community College President Debbie l. sydow, Ph.D. “even as we celebrate this important fundraising milestone,
additional state cuts to higher education are being proposed. That’s the reason it is imperative that we continue our fundraising
efforts to ensure that our community’s high school seniors who want to go to college, can go to college.”
The reach Beyond Capital Campaign is only the second campaign in the College’s history and the first in nearly a decade. In addition
to the Presidential scholars Fund, the Campaign supports an expanded Children’s learning Center, an innovation and training fund
for faculty and staff development, and the new srC Arena which will open in late 2011.

Legacy Pathways lAunChed
The OCC Foundation proudly presented its first issue of
Legacy Pathways, the new legacy society newsletter,
designed to provide information on the importance of
estate planning and planned giving in assisting future
generations of OCC students in achieving their dreams of
higher education and a path for a brighter tomorrow.
The Foundation’s prestigious legacy society represents
a group of dedicated individuals who have made an
important commitment to Onondaga Community College
students of today and tomorrow. The legacy society
honors those who have made a commitment to Onondaga
Community College’s future through a bequest intention,
charitable gift annuity, charitable trust, life insurance gift or
other estate planning techniques.
Future issues of Legacy Pathways will profile legacy society
members and share valuable information when making
decisions about personal and family estate management.

ADDs UP TO sUCCess.
For many, future professions aren’t always decided on in the prime of one’s
immature youth. However, Onondaga’s Jane Tanner, a mathematics
professor at Onondaga Community College, knew sitting in her kindergarten
classroom that her path would one day lead her to become a teacher.
“my math teacher inspired me.” Tanner said. “she just really turned me onto
math in fifth and sixth grade. I wish I could have talked to her and personally
told her, ‘Because of you, this is what I did with my life.”
Prior to coming to Onondaga, the Baldwinsville, N.Y.,
native had teaching opportunities in the Baldwinsville
and liverpool school districts before getting a phone
call from former OCC Vice President of Academic and

student services Helen etherington in 1982.
“she took a chance and hired me,” Tanner said. “she has been a dear woman
to me.”
Award, highlighting her services to the College and work with the museum
of science and Technology (mOsT); the Paragon Honor which showcased
her accomplishments in mentoring new online faculty; and a most
prestigious national recognition – the National Institute for staff and
Organizational Development (NIsOD) Award.
This may come as no surprise to those that know Jane Tanner, but the same
dedication and commitment she brings to the classroom is complemented
by her generosity to organizations she supports. tanner is identified as
one of the top consecutive donors to the OCC Foundation for more than
15 years and has contributed consistently to support student scholarships
such as the memorial scholarship named in memory of former colleague
Patricia Baggett; the Helen and John etherington endowed scholarship;
and the OCC Faculty Award for Academic excellence.
“there are good students here that are financially strapped and need
help,” Tanner said. “you have to give them a chance, it might save their
lives.” she continues, ”If students can’t attend due to financial reasons, we
aren’t helping out the institution. If I can help someone else out, then that’s
the way to do it. I do it because it’s easy to do.”
For Tanner, seeing the end result is extremely rewarding. “As a teacher, it’s
Tanner’s decorated 28-year career at Onondaga has paved the way for a
most impressive resume filled with awards and honors such as the “Who’s
seeing that light bulb go on. If that light bulb doesn’t go on, you’re not
doing something right. It’s all worthwhile at the end.”

As the second largest undergraduate institution in Central New York, Onondaga enrolls more students from every
Central New York school district than any other college or university and enrolls as many as 60% of collegebound high school seniors from local school districts. Onondaga offers nearly 50 different degree and certificate
programs, customized training for business and industry, and a full range of personal enrichment courses.
Taxpayer support represents less than 50% of the College’s revenue each year. Additional resources are
necessary for Onondaga to continue this service to the community and carry out its mission of contributing
to a high quality of life, a well-educated citizenry, and a vital regional economy:
