ast year marked another milestone year for this community and its animals, as
Halifax Humane Society celebrated its 75th Anniversary. In that time, we estimate
that half a million animal lives have been touched by this organization and its
comprehensive host of services. With the theme of this newsletter being “reaching new
heights”, I would like to take a moment to share with you what the HHS has achieved in the
last few years and what the future holds for our organization.
•Adoption Center
Since day one on the job, my personal goal has been to create an organization this
community could be proud of, and that its animals could rely on. Being one of the last
remaining open-admission facilities in Florida is no easy feat. However, the good work of
our Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers has paid off by increasing adoptions by over
20% for two years in a row. These efforts were also acknowledged when HHS won the
National CLASSY Award as the top charity in the nation in Animal Advocacy. Since then,
our commitment to that original goal has only grown, and we now hope to expand and
replicate our award winning programs in other communities as well. This is seen through
our new animal behavior programs, legislative advocacy efforts, animal transfer vehicle, and
spay/neuter transport programs. We are truly reaching new heights with these programs and
more as they are already expanding our outreach into West Volusia County and facilitating
partnerships in other regions. In short, we are redefining the standard for animal welfare
organizations in our area and beyond.

To that end, by 2014 Halifax Humane Society will be one of five animal welfare
organizations in the State of Florida with Charity Navigator’s top rating as a 4-star charity,
competing with markets like Miami, Tampa, and Naples. Our size and spectrum puts us in
the top 10% of animal welfare organizations in the entire United States, and locally we are
one of the largest non-profits that do not receive any government funding.
Halifax Humane Society programs continue to grow and serve animals, but our 50-year old
facility will soon start to hamper our progress. Our animals deserve a facility that allows the
continued growth of this organization, as we uphold our original mission of never closing our
doors to an animal in need. As such, this year we are officially kicking off a capital campaign
to renovate our building and hope to raise one dollar for every animals served in the last 75
years. We are asking every patron, donor, and friend to assist us in the process so that our
forward progress continues. Donating during our half-million dollar capital campaign is a
chance to leave a legacy that will care for yet
another half a million animals. It’s about
being a part of a community that cares and
serving as a standard for others to do the
same.

National
CLASSY Award
I
n September 2012, Halifax
Humane Society was selected
as the National Winner for
Animal Advocacy and Services at
the 4th Annual CLASSY Awards
ceremony. The award was presented
at philanthropy’s biggest night, the
CLASSY Awards’ red carpet ceremony
in San Diego, CA. It is the largest
philanthropic award ceremony in the
country, recognizing the top charitable
achievements around the world.
From a pool of over 2,400
nominations submitted to
StayClassy, Halifax Humane Society’s
achievement story stood out as the
best. Halifax Humane Society’s story
detailed the widespread changes made
in 2011-12 that improved its ability
to save animals and combat the pet
overpopulation problem.
“Halifax Humane Society in 2011
decided it was time for a new
direction, all with one mission in
mind – to enhance our services,” said
HHS Executive Director Miguel Abihassan. “We took our programs from
18 to 38 in a year and a half, and in
so doing we increased our adoptions
by 21%. In the next year, we hope to
launch a new program in which we
can train other humane societies to
accomplish what we have done here.
To all those who took that journey
with us, this award is for you.”

Showcasing Our Community
T
here have been numerous times in our community that I am amazed by the generosity of the people who
live, work, and play here in Volusia County. Whether it has been individuals donating time or money,
it seems that when a need arises, the community steps up. And Halifax Humane Society does not forget
that we are not only recipients of generosity, but are also willing to lend a hand when we are able to help.
Recently, the Council on Aging had a need to assist Meals on Wheels recipients with food for their animals. Due to
receiving a large donation of dog and cat food, we were able to fill that need and work with the group to make sure
their animals were well fed. When the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) was interested in relocating
their international conference, we worked closely with the Ocean Center to bring the group here to Daytona Beach
along with their much-needed dollars that will flow into the local economy. Hundreds of animal welfare
groups will be sending their staff to learn from the HSUS, and will be taking advantage of
the opportunity to witness our award-winning programs in person, having recently gained
national recognition. Unfortunately, while our programs are second to none, our facility is
lacking the representation that this community deserves and our animals need.
And so we are asking for your help to prepare our facility for the Humane Society of the United States International
Expo in May 2014.
The Daytona Beach area is home to the World’s Most Famous Beach and the Daytona International Speedway,
icons throughout the country. This community has many treasures that are cornerstones for tourism and economic
development. Halifax Humane Society has hopes of joining those icons and becoming a model for animal welfare
organizations throughout the country. We want visitors to see not only how to care for homeless and abused
animals, but how to strengthen the animal-human bond, shaping the way a community cares for its animals.
Whether you are able to donate dollars or get your hands dirty along with our staff, we are hoping to complete a
facelift to the façade that will include painting, landscaping, construction, and even a monument sign to welcome
visitors. We will complete our capital campaign and overhaul the inside of our facility to increase program
efficiency, improve animal health, and increase adoptions. However, this current need is time sensitive in order
for HHS to showcase our organization and our community to animal lovers from all over the world. If all our
supporters in the community can pool their talent and resources
together to lend a hand or a dollar, we can transform Halifax
Humane Society into a place we are all eager to present to fellow
animal lovers visiting our wonderful community.

Meet the 2013
HHS PETS OF THE YEAR!
A
fter receiving 117 entries and a
sorting through a steady stream
of votes, Halifax Humane
Society named the winners of its first
ever Pet Photo Contest. Rising above all
other contenders were Foxy and Wolley
Tac, who were named the 2013 Dog and
Cat of the Year. As the winners, Foxy and
Wolley Tac’s families received a wrapped
canvas print of their winning photo, an
HHS Prize Pack, a 75th Anniversary Book
and Commemorative Coin, and featured
placements on the HHS website, Facebook
page, and right here in the newsletter!

Could Your Pet Star in the HHS 2014 Calendar?

Your pet doesn’t have to be adopted from Halifax Humane Society to be
considered, but we do love our adoption success stories. The Cat or Dog
photo entry that receives the most votes will be featured on the cover
of the 2014 HHS Calendar! After that, the Top 10 vote-getters will be
pictured as monthly features in the 2014 calendar, and 2 additional entries
will be crowned as Judge’s Choice winners to round out the remaining
monthly featured pets.

SPECIAL EVENTS IN REVIEW
3rd Annual Fur Ball
The 3rd Annual Fur Ball, Halifax Humane Soicety’s premier gala and flagship event,
boasted over 725 people and raised $92,000 for the shelter! Hosted at the Ocean
Center, guests enjoyed a champagne cocktail reception and full sit down dinner.
Later in the evening, guests competed in a riveting live auction that included jewelry
from Thad Cline, guests homes in Tennessee & Key West, driving experiences from
Cadillac, Ferrari, and Lamborghini, and diamond and white topaz jewelry from Molto
Bella. An additional 200+ items were up for bid in the silent auction, ranging from spa
treatments, golf packages, vacation excursions, and art & sports memorabilia.
After the auctions, guests indulged in the magnificent Chocolate Lounge, choosing
between 15 vendors with a variety of sweet treats, wine, and coffee. Guests also enjoyed
the first showing of Halifax Humane Society’s 75th Anniversary commemorative video.
3rd Annual Mutt Strutt 5K/10K
The 3rd Annual Mutt Strutt 5K/10K on The World’s Most Famous Beach was a wild
success! Over 1,800 people and countless pups ran, jogged, walked, and trotted down
the beach, combining to raise $42,000 for HHS animals. Over 300 individuals and 62
teams led fundraising efforts for the event.
Participants enjoyed a brisk, beautiful morning and the dogs had a wild time on the
beach. Kaylee and DJ Tremble from 103.3 The Vibe kept the crowd entertained, and
even led a Harlem Shake!
Bike Week Ruff Ride
The Bike Week Ruff Ride set a record by drawing over 200 bikers from all over the
country, and raising over $4,000 for the shelter. Riders enjoyed a beautiful trip through
the Ormond Loop and up A1A, ending at The Iron Horse Saloon for a VIP reception,
BBQ dinner, and a wild afterparty. After the ride, bikers enjoyed live entertainment,
drinks, and the California Hell Riders taking on the infamous Wall of Death.
3rd Annual Island Party
The 2013 Island Party was a wonderful time. Over 250 attendees dressed up in their
island gear and enjoyed a beautiful night at the Lohman residence on the Halifax
River. Steel Daddy set a relaxing mood for the evening with live, tropical tunes.
Amber’s Jewel prepared delicious island fare, and guests enjoyed rum runners and other
delicious island-themed drinks.
The big hit of the night was the live auction, in which a weekend stay at Ron Rice’s
Spanish Guest house, a seven-day Key Largo trip, and a Thad Cline Cuff were all up for
bid. Guests contributed $22,000 in total to HHS animals.

Dog Park on Ice :
August 14
Beat the summer heat and cool down at Halifax
Humane Society’s Dog Park on Ice! Dogs and their
owners will enjoy two sessions on the ice of at least 15
minutes. We’ll include “ice booties” for your dog so
their paws don’t get too cold! Guests will also receive
two drink tickets and light appetizers at the event.
Biketoberfest Ruff Ride:
October 17
The Ruff Ride returns to kick off Biketoberfest 2013!
Ride in style on the scenic A1A highway and through
the Ormond Loop, while supporting the animals at
Halifax Humane Society. The ride concludes at the
Iron Horse Saloon, which has generously offered
to host the VIP party. A BBQ buffet will be offered
along with two complimentary drinks, and there will
be a variety of live bands playing that night for your
entertainment.
Craft Beer & BBQ Beach Bash :
October 26
Join Halifax Humane Society and World of Beer at
the Daytona Bandshell for the inaugural Craft Beer
& BBQ Beach Bash! This is the only local festival
in which you can sample a variety of BBQ and
specialty Craft beers while raising money for Halifax
Humane Society animals. Guests will also enjoy live
entertainment at the Bandshell. We are currently
seeking BBQ teams for the competition, and there are
plenty of sponsorship opportunities available as well!
4th Annual Fur Ball :
December 5
Halifax Humane Society will proudly present the
4th Annual Fur Ball Gala and Silent Auction at the
Ocean Center in Daytona Beach. The Fur Ball is
the Halifax Humane Society’s premier fundraising
event, and back by popular demand, the theme is
“A Chocolate Affair.” Guests will enjoy dinner and
drinks, live entertainment, fabulous live and silent
auction items, and the famous chocolate lounge.
In 2012, 725 Fur Ball attendees and supporters
contributed to raise $92,000 for HHS animals!

Halifax Humane Society Unveils
New Mobile Adoption
& Transfer Vehicle
A
s you drive around Central Florida this summer, keep an eye out for Halifax Humane Society’s newest addition, a
mobile adoption and transfer vehicle that can safely and efficiently transport up to 35 animals. The vehicle is
the latest component of a rapidly growing adoption program at HHS, which
improved its adoption numbers by 23% and 20% respectively in 2011 and 2012,
and is seeing similar increases so far in 2013. It will allow HHS to showcase its animals at large
“mega-adoption” events in major metropolitan areas, offering more exposure to HHS animals than ever before.
The vehicle took its first voyage in late May, transferring 35 animals (20 dogs, 15 cats) to the Humane Society for Greater
Savannah. The animals participated in a mega-adoption event there. HHS expects to take the vehicle all over the North and
Central Florida region to large community events, where it can help find new homes for its animals.
At Halifax Humane Society, we often discuss the fact that, despite our location in a smaller city, we receive and care for
a number of animals that is comparable to much larger metropolitan areas, such as Orlando or Atlanta. The new
mobile adoption vehicle offers the opportunity for our animals to gain exposure at
large metropolitan events and “mega-adoption” weekends.
In addition to its use for adoption
events, the vehicle will also be used
to transport groups of animals to
be sterilized at the HHS Redinger
Spay/Neuter Clinic. The Redinger
Clinic is a state-of-the-art clinic
that specializes specifically on pet
sterilization at affordable rates.
In just over a year since its grand
opening, the clinic has already
performed over 8,000 surgeries.
By using the new vehicle to
transport animals to the Redinger
Clinic, HHS will be able to reach
new groups of pet owners that may
have been unable to use its services
otherwise. The vehicle was custom
built using funds provided through
a grant from The American Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals (ASPCA). High-volume
adoption events and targeted spay/
neuter programs are among the
organization’s top priorities in
2013, making the vehicle grant a
perfect match.

Cinco De Meow-O
A WILD SUCCESS
T
his year’s Cinco De Meow-O adoption promotion was even more popular
than the first. Sixty-five cats found homes during the promotion,
exceeding the 2012 total of 47! Cat lovers piled into the HHS shelter
from May 3-5, looking for their favorite feline.
Finding homes for cats is especially important in the spring and summer. The term
“kitten season” is used in the animal welfare community to describe the time of year
when cat reproduction is at its peak. It typically begins in late spring/early summer,
and continues into the fall. The effect is amplified in Florida due to the warm
weather. Since many Florida winters lack an extended stretch of cold weather, the
impact is even greater in our area, and shelters quickly reach capacity.
While this year’s Cinco De Meow-O promotion was finding homes for cats, the
2012 Cinco De Meow-O poster garnered some attention of its own. It was selected
at the HSUS International Animal Care Expo as the Innovation Station first prize
winner in the adoption category. The Innovation Station contest features creative
efforts from animal welfare groups all over the United States and Canada. Expo
attendees then pick their favorite posters and vote for the winner. As this year’s
winner, the Cinco De Meow-o poster will now be available to shelters worldwide for
their use in similar promotions.

Paws of Freedom
Prison Pups N Pals
Reaches New Heights
L
ast month, Halifax Humane Society celebrated the graduation of the 18th class of Prison Pups N Pals. Through June
2013, 117 dogs have completed the training program, which boasts a 100% adoption rate. In the Prison Pups N
Pals program, Halifax Humane Society works alongside the West Volusia Kennel Club and inmates at the Tomoka
Correctional Institute. Inmates learn dog obedience training techniques from the West Volusia Kennel Club’s professional
trainers. They are then able to take that knowledge and use it to train their selected dog.
The program serves a dual purpose that leads to positive futures for both the inmates and the dogs. The dogs receive obedience
training that increases their adoptability and prepares them for life in a new forever home. Meanwhile, the inmates are educated
on animal care and proper training methods, helping them gain skills that could lead them to jobs in animal services in the future.
While in the program, the dogs learn all basic commands
and some unique tricks as well. By the time each dog
finishes the program, it is highly trained, obedient,
housebroken, spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations,
and micro-chipped. Prison Pups make great pets for any
family, as their training eases the transition into a new home.
After adopting a Prison Pup, new owners receive a free
seven-week obedience-training program, further easing the
transition to a new home.
Of the 117 Prison Pups, 18 completed a second month of
training to be a part of the Paws of Freedom program. Paws
of Freedom matches veterans with companion dogs. Last
year, the Department of Veterans Affairs joined the existing
Prison Pups N Pals program to create Paws of Freedom.
Each class of Prison Pups now has two dogs selected to stay
for an additional seven weeks of training in order to become
a companion dog for a veteran. These dogs help owners
that may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD), providing them with emotional support.
Following adoption, veterans associated with Paws of
Freedom receive additional financial support, a care
package, and one year of pet health insurance to help them
with their new companion dog. According to Muni-Sathoff
Paws of Freedom follows a collective body of research data
that supports the overall benefit of companion dogs to the
psychological and physiological health of individuals with
whom they interact, especially their owners.

HHS Thrift Store
ON THE MOVE
H
alifax Humane Society’s thrift store has
an exciting summer in store, as it will
be relocating to Ormond Beach! The
new location of the store will be 333 West Granada
Boulevard, Suite 250, in the Gold’s Gym and Ace
Hardware plaza. The new location will open in August.
While we prepare for the grand opening of the new
location, we are in search for great items to stock the
store. All donations to the thrift store help support HHS
animals. If you have new or gently used items that you
think we could use, contact us at (386) 322-7717.
In the meantime, you can support the current HHS
Thrift Store (1027 Nova Road in Holly Hill) by
purchasing items, making donations, or helping out as a
volunteer. Some people choose to do all three! Contact

HHS Debuts
PAWS Summer Camp
T
his summer, Halifax Humane
Society introduced the Pals
of Animal Welfare and
Sheltering (PAWS) Summer Camp for
the first time! The camp is open to
children ages 8-11, and offers the perfect
experience for a young animal lover.
experience learning about dogs, cats,
bunnies, birds, marine life, and more. They
will tour various areas of the HHS shelter,
work with HHS staff, hear from the HHS
veterinarian, and learn from wildlife experts
that visit the camp. A field trip to Ponce
Inlet’s Marine Science Center is also included
in the camp.
HHS hopes to make its PAWS Summer
Camp a yearly staple event, helping to
encourage the next generation of animal
advocates. Studies have shown that children
with pets learn responsibility, compassion,
and empathy. They also tend to have higher
levels of self-esteem and improved social
skills.
Admission to the camp is $125/camper. This
covers all five days of the camp, one t-shirt,

Meet Your Match @ HHS
A
s we at Halifax Humane Society have explored different avenues for boosting adoptions, the Meet Your Match program stood
out as a perfect fit. In 2012, HHS worked directly with the ASPCA to implement the program at our shelter. The Meet Your
Match program has raised adoptions by as much as 40-50% in other animal shelters.
In the Meet Your Match program, pets go through assessments, known as Feline-ality for cats and Canine-ality for dogs. These
assessments divide the pets into one of three categories, each of which contains three more sub-categories based on the pet’s primary
source of motivation (internal, external, or social). For example, a “green” dog can either be the life of the party, a go-getter, or a free
spirit. An “orange” dog may be a wallflower, a busy bee, or a goofball. Finally, a “purple” dog can be classified as a couch potato, a
constant companion, or a teacher’s pet.
When potential adopters arrive at Halifax Humane Society, they take a short quiz to determine which category of pets is the best match
for their lifestyle. A couple of example questions are “Do I want my cat to play with toys?” and “Do I want my cat to interact with
guests that come to my house?”
After completing the quiz, the potential adopter enters the adoption
areas, where they will find each pet’s MYM color labeled on its
kennel. Now that they know which color to look for, it is a much
easier process to find a new best friend. If an adopter decides they
would prefer a different dog or cat instead, no problem! We are very
confident in the Meet Your Match assessments and think they are
great tools to match people with pets, but it is not a requirement to
adopt from the color assigned to you.

Redinger Clinic
Celebrates
Momentous 1ST Year
I
n April, Halifax Humane Society’s Redinger Spay/
Neuter Clinic celebrated the one-year anniversary
of its grand opening. In the short time it has been
open, the clinic has already made tremendous strides toward
reducing and eventually eliminating the pet overpopulation
problem in the Greater Daytona area.
The Redinger Clinic hosted its Grand Opening celebration
on April 12, 2012, and hosted its first full day of operations
on April 17, completing 32 surgeries. In its first year
of operations, the clinic performed 7,705 spay/neuter
surgeries, sterilizing 2,898 dogs and 4,807 cats.
Even with adoption numbers on the rise at Halifax Humane
Society, reducing intake must be a top priority when
combating the pet overpopulation problem. According to
national estimates, the surgeries performed at the Redinger
Clinic in its first year prevented over 2,000 dogs and 2,700
cats from entering animal shelters.
In addition to its regular daily spay/neuter schedule, the
Redinger Clinic has also been used to complete major
spay/neuter initiatives and fulfill grant projects received
by HHS. Beat the Heat (300 female cat spays) and Primp
Your Pit (250 Pit Bull spay/neuter surgeries) were two
notable projects that Halifax Humane Society was able to
successfully complete at the Redinger Clinic. The clinic
was also used to provide free spay/neuter surgeries to the
Rescue a Life group for a colony of cats being displaced by a
Daytona Beach construction project.
During the planning stages of the clinic, longtime animal
welfare supporters Alan & Mary Ann Redinger made
a generous $50,000 donation toward the project. This
contribution allowed Halifax Humane Society to outfit the
building as a state-of-the-art spay/neuter clinic. Alan passed
away in 2012, but the clinic continues to move forward in
his honor. A PetSmart Charities grant also allowed for the
purchasing of the necessary equipment to operate the clinic.
The surgical standards at the Redinger Clinic are derived
from Humane Alliance, an organization that has been a
catalyst for, and strategy behind, a nationwide movement
to execute the best defense against euthanasia, namely
prevention by sterilization. So far, over 115 new spay/
neuter clinics across the United States have opened under
its mentor program.
Spay/neuter surgeries at the Redinger Clinic start as low as
$25, and prices vary based on species, gender, and weight.
The surgeries are subsidized in part by grants from PetSmart
Charities. To schedule a spay/neuter surgery for your pet,

Prepare for Hurricane Season
With an Emergency Plan
H
urricanes are a
known threat to
Floridians, and for
pet owners without an emergency
plan in place, they can pose
serious problems. Each year,
hurricane season runs from June
1-November 30. However, we
have learned in past years that
tropical storms can form even
outside of these dates.
A hurricane preparedness plan
is important for residents of
any coastal region. However,
humans are not the only ones
that need to be prepared during
inclement weather. Pet owners
should have an emergency plan
that accounts for their animals as
well, and should always be aware
of the potential for evacuation in
their area. A well-organized plan
should help you and your pet make it safely through another
hurricane season.
Pre-storm preparation is critical for you and your pet(s). If
you wait until a storm is bearing down on your home, it may
be too late. Create a checklist of pet supplies you
will need. This should include leashes/collars,
current ID tags and/or registered microchips,
a three-day supply of food and water, medical
records, ownership papers, a current photo,
a crate, towels/blankets, and toys. Make sure
to have these items on hand now, instead of
waiting until a storm approaches. Remember that
tens of thousands of people could be in the same situation,
and stores often run out of items during emergencies.
If you are ordered to evacuate as a storm draws near,
never leave your pets behind or turn them loose. Pets are
domesticated animals that cannot survive on their own. Look
for a friend or relative that will take you and your pet into
their home, or check online for pet friendly motels. Again,
planning early will benefit you, since many other people
will also be looking for places to stay. Most animal shelters,
including Halifax Humane Society, do not board pets. In
Volusia County, if you have no other place to go, you and
your pets can go to the Deland Fairground People and Pets
Shelter. Space is limited, so please make that your last resort.
When returning after a storm, keep pets on a leash until they
readjust to their surroundings. Watch for downed power
lines and other debris that pose dangers to you and your
animals, and beware of standing water and other animals. Do
not allow animals to consume food or water that may have
become contaminated.

When people think about leaving assets to a non-profit
organization through one’s will, many assume it is a tool
only available to wealthy individuals. That is not the
case, however. There are many ways to support
Halifax Humane Society through our Planned Giving
Program, and those gifts often cost nothing during your
lifetime.
Thanks to the generosity of HHS Board
President Mel Stack, if you name HHS in your will, Mel
will prepare it free of charge.
By remembering HHS in your will, you will guarantee
that your love for animals will be expressed forever.
Many of the programs in place at HHS today are
funded from bequests left to us by generous donors.
For instance, our low-cost spay/neuter program, our
cat adoption cages, and our puppy/small dog room
are all results of someone’s gift to HHS and our animals.

The HHS GEM (Giving Every Month) allows our organization to use long-term planning to envision
a time when our services are no longer needed, and every animal is placed into a loving, forever
home. GEM members allow HHS to more effectively allocate resources to make a bigger impact in
the community. Funds will be used for animal care and adoption, spay/neuter services, emergency
medical care, behavioral training for difficult animals in our care, Prison Pups N Pals, and much more.
