As head of the Arkansas NAACP and
protector of the nine students, Bates
would achieve instant fame as the drama

fame would prove fleeting, and Bates
would pay a hefty price for her attempts to

Dear Members:
As we like to do
in the beginning
of each new year,
this edition of
AETN Magazine
features our
annual report for fiscal year 2011. You’ll
find an overview of some our best accomplishments of 2010-2011, as well as
financial information of interest to you
as a supporter of the AETN Foundation.
From locally produced programs relevant
to Arkansans, to ongoing educational
opportunities and the consistently trusted
PBS shows we tune into time and time
again, the past year was another success
for our AETN family.
Also, at the end of 2011, we were honored
to be remembered in the will of Norris
Cunningham Taylor, a longtime viewer
who bequest a large gift from his estate to
the AETN Foundation. Budget trimming has been common for all of us in
recent years, and gifts like this allow us
to continue offering quality educational
programming and services.
is working on several new documentaries,
including two about the natural wonders
of Arkansas – Bayou Bartholomew and
Champion Trees. Our education division
is assisting educators statewide with
the transition to Common Core State
Standards Initiative. This fall we will see
Ken Burns back again with a documentary about the Dustbowl. And don’t forget
about the wonderful concert lineup from
the AETN Foundation, including a new
installment by Celtic Woman and the
return of Straight No Chaser.
It is our ongoing desire to help you understand how and what we are doing and
seek your input for ways we can improve.
We hold tightly to the idea that we are
to “offer lifelong learning opportunities
to all Arkansans; to supply instructional
programs to Arkansas schools; to provide
programming and services to improve
and enhance the lives of Arkansas citizens;
and to illuminate the culture and heritage
of Arkansas and the world.”
You’ve seen our tagline “Be More” often,
but it’s your enduring support and enthusiasm for the work that we do that allows
AETN to be more for Arkansas. I cannot

Arkansas Educational Television Network and Foundation
Combined Annual Report • Fiscal 2011
Highlights from Fiscal Year 2011
“Election 2010: The Debates”
Nine separate debates were held over five
days on the UCA campus. The debates included
25 candidates in nine different races with 27
journalists posing questions. This public service
allowed Arkansans a thorough look at candidates
and their platforms.
“U.N.I.T.Y.”
In 2004, inmates and prison officials formed
the “U.N.I.T.Y.” (U and I helping Teen Youth)
program at Tucker Maximum Security Prison in
Tucker, Ark. The documentary highlighted this
program and positive outcomes.
“CW150: Remembering the Civil
War in Arkansas”
AETN, in partnership with the Arkansas Civil War
Sesquicentennial Commission, presented an
original one-hour program from the Old State
House in Little Rock to reflect on the anniversary
of the Civil War and its impact on the state a
century and a half later.
“Men & Women of Distinction:
Miller Williams”
Miller Williams might be best remembered as the
man who delivered the inaugural poem at Bill
Clinton’s second inauguration, but in the world of
literature, he ranks among the best of American
poets. This program highlights his life and works.
In its fifth year, “Student Selects: A Young
Filmmakers Showcase” gave K-12 student
filmmakers an avenue to have their work
broadcast, streamed online and screened at
the annual Little Rock Film Festival, and also
provided $10,000 in college scholarships in
partnership with the THEA Foundation.

art belongs in the heartland. He also treks
to the Lower Lake Waterfowl Refuge, south
of DeGray Lake near Arkadelphia, which is
a 400-acre haven for all sorts of waterfowl
and bald eagles. And finally, he journeys to a
particular area along the Kings River in north
Arkansas to watch the mating ritual of eagles
as they spin and free-fall from the sky with talons locked in one of nature’s
astounding displays.

Visit the New AETN Public Media Center
at the Museum of Discovery!
Producers at AETN work hard every year
to deliver local programs that explore the
uniqueness and diversity of Arkansas.
Following is a preview of some of the
documentaries and special programming
coming soon to AETN.
“Student Selects”
“Student Selects: A Young Filmmakers
Showcase” is a program for kindergarten
through 12th grade students, designed to
highlight the bright future of Arkansas’s
youngest filmmakers. Now in its sixth
year, “Student Selects,” in partnership
with the THEA Foundation and the
Little Rock Film Festival, provides many
opportunities to students, including college scholarships, hands-on workshops,
potential broadcast of their work, and film
festival screenings.
The newly remodeled Museum of Discovery in Little Rock now hosts the AETN Public
Media Center – a resource room where families can take a break, engage, learn,
research, explore and be inspired.
Here you will find:
• science, technology and nature videos and books
• two computer stations linking to our science, nature and education sites
• puzzles, models, activities and more.
Watch the room change as museum exhibits change. Check out the current dinosaur
exhibit, learn dinosaur names, read a book and look at dinosaur models.

Deadlines are fast approaching for the
2012 “Student Selects” program. All films
and entry materials for both “Student Selects” and the Young Filmmakers Scholarship contest (provided at www.aetn.org/
studentselects) must be postmarked by
Friday, April 6. Students are encouraged
to submit their films and attend the Little
Rock Film Festival YOUTH! Program,
which will feature workshops and Q&A
sessions with industry professionals,
screening of youth films, and much more,
June 2-3.
“Bayou Bartholomew”
Bayou Bartholomew is the world’s largest
bayou that slowly meanders through Ar-

kansas and Louisiana. It is approximately
364 miles long and was used by the Native
Americans long before it served as a trade
route for early explorers and frontiersmen.
The waters of the Arkansas River formed
the present bayou bed during a period
when it was constantly changing courses.
Riddled with pollution and over-sedimentation, the bayou and its 117 species of fish,
31 species of mussels and 110 species of
birds are in danger.
This documentary will introduce the
people of Arkansas to Bayou Bartholomew,
its significance to the state and what is
being done to try to save this beautiful and
diverse waterway.
Stay tuned for information on the progress of
this documentary, as well as a broadcast date.
“Champion Trees”
The Arkansas Forestry Commission has
a program called Champion Trees that
recognizes those trees, planted by nature
or individuals, that are the largest of each
species, native and non-native. These trees
may be big and majestic, or simply small
and unique, but they are always beautiful. AETN is producing a documentary
that showcases these Champion Trees, as
well as the history, art and environmental
impact of conserving these living monuments.
Check listings for an upcoming broadcast
date.

The AETN Foundation is proud to
bring you the angelic music of Celtic
Woman on their brand new “Believe”
tour.
And don’t miss “Straight No Chaser
Live” in Fort Smith Tuesday, April 10,
at 7:30 p.m. at the Arkansas Best Corp
Performing Arts Center.
Internationally renowned for alluring
stage productions and songs of heartwarming inspiration, “Believe: Live”
is destined to reveal for Celtic Woman
what will be a new chapter of musical enchantment to be enjoyed by the
entire family.
If the phrase “male a cappella group”
conjures up an image of students in
blue blazers, ties and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses…think again. Straight No Chaser are
neither strait-laced nor straight-faced.
As original member Randy Stine said,
“We take the music very seriously; we
just don’t take ourselves too seriously.”
Reserve your seats for Thursday, April
5, at 7:30 p.m. at Robinson Center
Music Hall in Little Rock.

“Dr. Wayne Dyer: Wishes Fulfilled”
Best-selling author and beloved teacher
Dr. Wayne Dyer presents his Five
Wishes Fulfilled Foundations: five steps
to living from your “highest self.” Using
his trademark humor, combined with
source material drawn from some of the
most original American “New Thought”
philosophers of the 20th century,
Dyer outlines a program for living a
profoundly extraordinary life, showing
viewers how to create new and astonishing thought patterns while defeating
unproductive and recurring habits. See
your March edition of AETN Magazine
