AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION CLASSES Class Dates and Times Course 2 Friday, June 5 Saturday, June 13 Sunday, June 14 Monday, June 15 5pm – 8pm 8am – 4pm 10am – 4pm 5pm – 8pm The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard course is to provide entry level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. AQUATICS Minimum age 15 on or before the final scheduled class Pass precourse swim test: Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed, goggles permitted. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to surface and swim 20 yards with legs only and exit the water in 1 minute 40 seconds (goggles are not permitted). 100% class attendance and participation Pass both a water skills test and written exam AMERICAN RED CROSS WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI) Prerequisites: 16 years of age on or before the last date of the course Complete online Blended Learning before the first day of class, link will be emailed to you once you have registered for the class Complete precourse session which includes: Swim the following skills at a learn-to-swim Level 4 1. Front Crawl-25 yards. 2. Back Crawl-25 yards. 3. Breaststroke-25 yrds. 4. Elementary Backstroke-25 yards. 5. Sidestroke-25 yards. 6. Butterfly-25 yards. Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (sculling is allowed) Tread water 1 minute Requirements: In order to become a Water Safety Instructor you must complete the precourse skills, attend all classes, participate and be prepared for the four teach-back assignments and score at least an 80% on the final written exam. All class participants must arrive on time, have homework assignments finished and ready for review each day of class and receive feedback from fellow classmates with maturity and an open-mind. Certification Includes: Once you have completed the Water Safety Instructor course you will be certified to teach: Participants must attend all days/times for the course. The Learn-To-Swim (6 Levels) courses are Blended Learning. A portion of the classroom learning will be e-learning at home, while all skills will be conducted at the Parent and Child Aquatics (2 Levels) YMCA. Participants will pay an additional Blended Learning Fee Pre-School Aquatics (3 Levels) ($35) for the online access. Starts, turns and proper technique are covered in the pool as well as possible video demonstrations. This is an excellent learning opportunity for all levels of competition. High school competitive swimmers are welcome. The course includes classroom work and optional in-the-water practice. For your convenience, instructors will come to your site to conduct the classroom portions. We'll also customize a program to meet your specific needs. Contact the Aquatic Director to schedule your groups training. AMERICAN RED CROSS PEDIATRIC CPR 3 HOURSE COURSE Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate from the American Red Cross in Pediatric CPR. The certification is valid for 2 years. $50 with certification card from ARC $30 without a certification card from ARC THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2015 9:00am - NOON GENERAL WATER SAFETY PROGRAM TRAINING FOR Babysitting provided, must register in advance for DAY CARE STAFF babysitting. PA Child Care regulations require a water safety presentation for staff assigned to supervise children when they are using an aquatic resource. The resource may be a pool sitting on the lawn in the yard of the child-care facility, an above ground pool or in ground pool, a public pool such as a Y or community pool or a lake, river, or stream. This water safety presentation must be presented each year for qualifying staff. Each participant completing the program will receive a participation card indicating the completion of the program for 2015. The completion card is valid when supervising for any PA child care facility. Call to set up a training session for your staff. AQUATICS GET ENGAGED MEMBERSHIP FEE CATEGORY ①BUBBLE BABIES Ÿ 6 - 36 months child will be exposed to games that use basic movements, such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control. Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child. One parent or guardian must attend the class and swim with the participant. ②2 1/2 YEAR OLD SWIM 30 months - 3 years Water adjustment, basic stroke development and personal rescue skills are all introduced in this class. Parent must remain on the pool deck during the 30-minute instructional period of the class. The parent/guardian gets in the water and swims with child for the last 15 minutes to reinforce skills covered by the instructor during class. ③PIKE Ÿ Ages 3 - 5 years This preschool beginner level class helps children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement. Children will learn the basic paddle stroke and kicking with the use of personal floatation devices. They will also become comfortable holding their faces in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming. ④EEL Ÿ Ages 3 - 5 years This advanced beginner class is for children who are comfortable in the water. They are taught to kick, float, and perform a simple paddle stroke. Children can swim across the width of the pool without assistance by the end of this level. ⑤RAY Ÿ Ages 3 - 5 years Children begin to build endurance while improving their strokes and skills. They learn to swim on their front and back, tread water and perform diving skills. Children can swim the width of the pool on their front and back without assistance by the end of this level. ⑥STARFISH Ÿ Ages 3 - 5 years Children at this level refine their strokes while reviewing previously learned skills. They also learn underwater swimming skills. Children can swim a length of the pool on their front and back without assistance by the end of this level. ⑦POLLIWOG Ÿ AQUATICS Ages 6 - 14 years Beginning level for school-age children. No prior swimming experience necessary. Students are introduced to basic stroke development, personal safety skills, water sports and games in a friendly environment with peers. ⑧GUPPY Ÿ Ages 6 - 14 years This class is designed for students who have completed the Polliwog. Children will continue to improve their freestyle and backstrokes. They will be introduced to deep water swimming skills including personal safety in deep water, diving and treading water. Children will also learn rotary breathing, and will be introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. ⑨MINNOW Ÿ Ages 6 - 14 years The Minnow level is designed for students who have completed either the Guppy or Starfish level. This class will continue to introduce students to diving, treading water, increased distance for freestyle and backstroke, as well as deep water swimming skills. It will introduce lap-swimming techniques to students and will focus on stroke refinement and endurance. ⑩FISH Ÿ Ages 6 - 14 years Students continue to focus on lap swimming skills, stroke refinement and endurance. They will continue to learn about water sports and games, increase distance of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, personal safety and basic rescue skills. ⑪FLYING FISH Ÿ Ages 6 - 14 years Flying Fish students continue to perfect lap swimming techniques and focus on stroke refinement of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and increase distance of butterfly. They will continue learning basic rescue skills such as throwing assists and rescue breathing. ⑫ADULT LEVEL 1 Ÿ Ages 15 and Up A beginner class for teens and adults. This program is designed for swimmers with little or no experience in the water. Instructors will teach fundamental aquatic skills. Campers will draw, paint, and build their way through exciting projects that connect to a hands-on theme. Summer art camps are taught by professional teaching artists. Creative exploration and the development of individual potential are the primary goals for junior division theatre students. In addition to rehearsing for productions, students have acting classes in which they investigate the world of theatre through exercises that activate their voices, bodies and imaginations. Stories, crafts and snacks will center around a water theme which will include both fresh and salt water. Weather permitting, children will have outdoor water play activities. No day would be complete without a dip in the pool and a take home water themed craft. July 13-July 17* Ages 4-6 9am-12pm Price: $130 *Babysitting available from 12PM-1PM for an additional $30. During his tenure, the Lady Monarchs have an over all record of 151-116, and reach the 2012 NCAA Sweet 16. Coach Donoghue has twenty-four seasons of coaching experience, including seventeen as a collegiate head coach. The last twenty seasons he has spent coaching women at the collegiate level, including being the top assistant at East Stroudsburg University, as well as the head coach at Penn State– Delaware County. CAITLIN HADZIMICHALIS Coach Hadzimichalis recently completed her 6th season as the top assistant coach for the Lady Monarchs. Coach Hadzimichalis came to King’s after concluding an outstanding collegiate career at Marywood University in Scranton. As a basketball player, Hadzimichalis was a four-year letter-winner and three-year team captain, earning team most valuable player honors in 2006 and 2008. She was also named to the 2008 Colonial States Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Team. Hadzimichalis concluded her Marywood career with 868 points, 376 rebounds, 215 assists and 175 steals. 2015 SUMMER SPLASH PASS Are you interested in using the pool for the summer months?
