Dear Parents,
Purim begins at sundown on Wednesday, March 7. It is traditional to read megilla Esther (a
scroll containing the book of Esther) on that evening. It signals the beginning of a day of fun and
silliness.
The good news: We have Religious School on Wednesdays. We can read the megilla together
when the kids come for class.
The bad news: Wednesday is a school night. When class ends at 6:30, everyone rushes home
to dinner and homework. Besides, lots of kids don't come to the 4:30 class on Wednesdays.
The solution: On March 7, we will begin classes at 5:30 p.m. At 6:00, we will have dinner for
everyone, along with some special entertainment prepared by our third and fourth grade students.
All are encouraged to attend, whether they usually come to Wednesday school or not. At 6:30 we
will hear the megilla and drown out the name of Haman with all the noise we can make. By 7:15,
we'll be on our way home with everyone fed, no dishes to wash, and everyone happy.
Come and celebrate Purim! All ages are welcome. Dinner is free. Costumes are appreciated, but
not required. Of course, the annual Purim Carnival with its attendant games, treats, and prizes
will still take place on Sunday, March 11.
Please call or email Tamara at the Temple and let us know how many people in your family we
can expect. Punctuate your midweek routine with a mini-festival. Join us at 5:30 on
Wednesday, March 7.
Shalom u'vracha,
Kitty Hall

MECHIRAT CHOMETZ – SALE OF CHOMETZ
During the Passover festival, all manner of leavened foods and drinks and ingredients,
which are made from or contain an admixture of grains (Chometz) are prohibited. One
who cannot dispose of all his/her Chometz before Pesach must authorize his/her Rabbi, in
advance, to sell his/her Chometz for him/her to a non-Jew. This action is completely
legal, giving the non-Jew all rights to ownership over the Chometz that has been sold to
him/her. After the conclusion of the festival, the Rabbi repurchases the Chometz from the
non-Jew. This page contains the form of authorization we use. Congregants may sell their
chometz by completing the authorization form below to be received at Temple B’nai
Israel by MONDAY, APRIL 2nd. Please mail your form to:

See you at the Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 11!
From the desk of Rabbi Mann:
Israel vs. Iran: At
the Oscars and
Beyond
Last week, I made
two friendly bets
with Jacob Danmar.
I lost the first, and
won the second. As
per usual, we were
talking Israeli politics. During the conversation, I mentioned that it will be
interesting to see which film would win
for the category of Best Foreign Film, in
which Israel and Iran (among others
from Canada, Poland and Belguim) are
competing. Jacob opined that “of
course, in ‘politically correct’ America,
the Iranian film would win”. The odds
were only 20% that the Iranian film
would win. So I bet against Iran. I predicted that Israel wouldn’t win either.
The same 20% odds. (I was rooting for
Canada.)
The next bet I made was that “if Iran
would win, the Iranian government
would consider it a ‘victory over the
‘Zionist regime’”. I won that bet!
The Israeli film “Footnote” deals with
a father-son rivalry concerning their
achievements in the area of Talmudic
scholarship. The Iranian film , “A Sepa-
At A Glance...
ration”, the story of an upper-middle
class family living in Tehran and falling
apart, as it struggles to balance its daily
life with its competing desires to leave
the oppressive society of Iran.
I did not see either film. But from
what I read about them, it would make
an interesting Adult-Ed program to
compare the two films with regard to
what they say about the two cultures.
The following was reported in the
media following the Iranian win at the
Oscars. “Even as Asghar Farhadi (the
film’s Director) celebrated a different
version of Iran being recognized at the
Oscars, he also didn't hold back in his
critique about the regime there itself,
accusing it of smothering "a rich and
ancient culture...under heavy dust of
politics."
Farhadi's extended remarks are below:
At this time many Iranians all over
the world are watching us and I imagine
them to be very happy. They are happy
not just because of an important award
or a film or a filmmaker, but because at
the time when talk of war, intimidation

ous culture. A rich and ancient
culture that has been under heavy
dust of politics. I proudly offer this
honor to the people of my country,
a people who respect all cultures
and civilizations and despise hostility and resentment.”
It is an open question whether
Iran’s belligerence toward Israel is
an indication of what Bernard
Lewis calls “a clash of civilizations”, or if it is only an aberrant
example of an extremist Iranian
government that does not represent the Iranian people. What is
unquestionable is that Iran is at
the forefront of a “new Antisemitism” which uses anti-Zionist
rhetoric to mask the oldest and
most malicious of hatreds.
Moshe Amirav, a political science professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, summed it up
well, when he said that he “didn’t
stop thinking about the bomb the
whole time” he was watching “A
Separation.”
Let us hope and pray that
“Iran’s victory over Israel” be limited to the Oscars. And that there
be a victory of the Iranian people
over its radical Islamist overlords.
Then, possibly, the two cultures –
Jewish and Muslim- can return to
former days when they co-existed
in peace.

Temple B’nai Israel’s Message from the President
Dear Friends,
I am in shock, as I know are
many of you, at the passing of
our long-term member and first
female President of Temple B’nai
Israel, Edith Katz. While it was
clear that she was advancing in
age, her vitality and clearness of
thought belied her years. Edith
has been a voice of wisdom and
rationality amid chaotic and notso chaotic times, serving as a
multi-decade Director. She also
served for years as the Chairperson of Architectural Committee
and House and Properties Committee, the guardian of our archives, and an able member of
the Finance Committee. When
beloved husband Marvin’s (may
he rest in peace) health declined
to the point that she no longer
felt comfortable leaving him at
night, she moved from the Board
of Directors to the Board of Trustees, but found herself wanting
more and more (when she was
again able to attend meetings) to
get back into the thick of the action. She accepted the invitation
to rejoin the Board of Directors
and only recently, when her illness was discovered, contacted
me and stated that she felt that
her illness would not allow her to
remain on the Board (or as a
committee chair), and was unanimously voted back onto the
Board of Trustees. Edith was, for
as long as anyone can probably
remember, the Temple Parliamentarian, always able to advise
us how to proceed, according to
Roberts Rules of Order. Edith
was opinionated, yet her opinions
were always clearly thought
through and clearly stated.
One anecdote that I am sure
that Edith would allow me to
share was at an Architectural
Committee meeting, at which
time the issue of hanging magnificent donated art in the Social
Hall was discussed. Edith was
firm in believing in the beautiful
simplicity of the unadorned brick
March 2012 ~ The Scribe
walls and was hopeful that the
issue would be decided to the
negative. At some point in the
meeting, Sarene Rosen (ya gotta
love these women) stated simply
to Edith, “You’re outvoted, 7 to 3”
and Edith relented, knowing full
well that there were only four voting members present! After the
art was placed on the Social Hall
walls (and on the walls of the
hallways), Edith said to me without any degree of discomfort, “I
was wrong-- this art enhances
the Temple!” Edith’s passing is a
major loss to the Temple, Hadassah and to the community (Edith
was a strong proponent of the
very successful Study Circles
Program that brought area citizens of all different backgrounds
together to dialogue on issues of
tolerance and cooperation, the
program unfortunately ending
due to budget cuts). Edith: I am a
better person for having known
you, and your influence on the
Temple and on those who have
known you and loved you has
been nothing more than miraculous. You are the role model for
‘Menschlichkeit’!
I do wish to report on a few
more areas. I know that we are
all thrilled to learn that Cassie
May’s repeat lung transplantation has gone well (as reported in
a front page story in the Chicago
Tribune), and that she is making
amazing progress. Our continued
best wishes go out to the entire
May family during her current
recovery process!
We had a very well attended
and successful chicken soup
luncheon at the Temple, the proceeds of which are completely
slated to assist the Temple during this difficult financial year.
Thank you, Sisterhood, for your
continued generous support! At
the same time (at the busy Temple that we wish to continue to
be there will be conflicts), there
was a Teacher Retreat coordinated and conducted by Kitty
Hall, where every teacher was
present and worked to increase
our skill set and sensitivity to the
issues of teaching this generation
of student. All of the aides also
were present, and we additionally
had a good representation of the
Board of Education. Kitty beautifully expressed her recognition of
the incredible talent and passion
that was represented, and it is
our hope that the new curriculum (which is actually working
and does not need any major
overhaul-- a major first for us in
quite some time) will translate
into not only a better teaching
outcome for our current students, but also more community
recognition of its quality and increasing enrollment next year,
when the word gets out, through
the enhanced marketing strategies of Paula Krapf and the newly
revitalized Membership Committee!
The Board, at its upcoming
meeting, will act on its selfmandate for better committee
function, and my hope is, that as
I reach the close of my final
months as your President, we will
be repositioned for the future!
Thank you for all of your support
and partnership, as we together
move forward!
Sincerely, David Leader

What’s Happening in Religious School
An Inconvenient Party
It’s almost time for Purim. Long before Mardi Gras, Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale, or the Super Bowl,
Jews had a day to cut loose and party without inhibition. Costumes, candy, noise and noshing are all part of
the celebration of Esther’s triumph in saving our people from extinction. Every year, Temple B’nai Israel has
a carnival and a hot dog lunch topped off with hamantashen, those delectable sweets filled with jam or
chocolate. This year, we’ll have our carnival on March 11. But Purim will be over by March 11. The daylong
silliness is due to begin at sundown on March 7—a Wednesday. Not many of us would choose to party on a
weekday night. Yet, that is our obligation.
Rabbi Mann came up with a great idea for making a Wednesday party possible. Since our students have
school on Wednesday evenings, the Rabbi suggested that we start school late—at 5:30 p.m.—and follow it
with a pizza supper at 6:00. This is an opportunity worth pursuing. You can fit this into your schedule. The
time spent commuting to the Temple will be neutralized by the time saved not having to cook or clean up
from dinner. Some of our kids have prepared a Purim spiel for our dinner entertainment. We’ll finish the evening with a megillah reading, drowning out Haman’s name with as much noise as a grogger-armed group
can muster. All are welcome. Just call or email the office by March 4 and let us know how many are coming.
The passing of Purim means four weeks to Pesach. (Insert reproduction of Edvard Munch’s painting, “The
Scream” here.) No matter how early I start getting ready, there’s always more to do than time to do it. So,
this year, Religious School students will be starting their preparations the week after the Purim carnival. On
March 18, we’ll have specially prepared Pesach workshops for all of our students. The teachers have prepared lessons that are age appropriate and offer plenty of hands-on exploration. They will create materials
that they can use at their own Seders this year and for many years to come.
The miracle of the Exodus transformed our people. The miracle at Sinai spelled out our covenant with Gd. This year, with your help, our children can learn that we have been liberated to keep that covenant in
every generation. This month, we will set down our well-used groggers and prepare for the festival that most
defines us as a nation. The exuberance of Purim will propel us into a time of study, anticipation and preparation for a festival that can be life-changing and will surely be joyous. Purim is here. Pesach is close behind.
Let us embrace both with enthusiasm.

SISTERHOOD NEWS AND EVENTS...
The second Chicken Soup Sale was a big success! Sorry if you were not able to attend but by the reaction of those who were there they TOTALLY enjoyed themselves. One of the ladies who came said to me as
she was leaving, "I will see you next year!"
I just want to thank everyone who helped as this was a TOTAL group effort: Rabbi and Beryl, Elissa
and David, Wendy, Ruth Ann, Judy and Phil, Anna and D.J., Susan, Barbara, Esther and Jack,
Elaine, Sarene, and Dan.
I would like to ask a favor of anyone who uses the table cloths other than for an Oneg or Kiddush if you
could please call me so that I could arrange to have them picked up. Also there is a box on top of the table
cloth rack on the stage, so when you take the table cloths off of the hanger could you please put it in the
box so they can be easily accessed when the cloths are taken home to be laundered.

BAR & BAT MITZVAH SPECIAL GIFT FUND
The Aurora Jewish Community traditionally presents a gift to each of our Bar & Bat Mitzvah celebrants. It is a
lovely custom, dating back at least to the 1930s. The gift is a collection of donations from our congregants.
Many congregants ask to be included in all of the presentations. Some prefer to pick and choose. If you want to
be included on any of the upcoming B’nai Mitzvah, please call or send a check at least one week in advance for
$5.00 each. This will allow time for the preparation of the congratulatory card listing all of the contributors.

TBI Social Action—Update and New Initiatives
TBI has just made its 3rd delivery of donated food and sundries to the Interfaith Food Pantry. Todah Rabbah to of
you who have made the effort to bring along “something extra” for our collection box when you come to Temple.
PLEASE KEEP IT COMING!!
And a special note of thanks to Bob Arundale for once again schlepping our collection to the food pantry. He
indicated that the line of people waiting outside to pick up their food, when he arrived, was about 50 yards long.
Don’t think for a minute that what we are doing doesn’t matter!!
Please Contribute to TBI “Tikkun Olam” Efforts
TBI Social Action Committee has identified two additional “opportunities” to be of service, both within our own
community (the Aurora area) and in the greater Chicago area. We need you to help TBI to fulfill this vital part of its
mission…
1. Preparation of Meals for Mutual Ground - This should be very easy for us to accomplish. On a frequency to
be determined, we will prepare meals to be served to the approximately 25-30 adult and children residents of this
facility. Being able to enjoy a lovingly prepared home-cooked meal is a godsend to them as they struggle to get their
lives in order. In addition every meal prepared and delivered by outsiders represents a huge savings to Mutual
Ground’s budget, allowing this organization to use its precious resources to more directly help its residents.
We are looking for volunteers to help prepare either salads, entrees, side dishes, and / or dessert. Ideally we will
identify at least 3 volunteers for each part of the meal, so that each volunteer would be asked to prepare for about
10 people. (But if we can’t get enough volunteers, then each one would be asked to prepare more. Please help so
that we can reduce the burden for each volunteer. Note: There is no concern with Kashrut for the food we prepare
for this purpose.)
Rhoda Melnicoff will be the “menu planner” and will communicate the menu for the next meal via e-mail to the
volunteers. (Don’t worry, she will come up with low-budget, but healthful plans - I am one to know!!)
To make this as convenient as possible, we would ask for the food preparations to be dropped off on a Sunday
morning (a place in the vestibule or foyer will be designated), and then someone will transport the collected portions
to Mutual Ground for refrigeration later that morning. We are targeting our first meal delivery for a Sunday after
Passover, either April 22 or 29. This date will be firmed up and announced.
PLEASE offer your culinary services. It can be as simple as making a larger portion of whatever you are cooking for your family or for company you may be having over! You will need to deliver whatever you prepare in a disposable container, as there is no practical way to have serving pieces returned from Mutual Ground. (Inexpensive
disposable containers are available at any dollar store.) To volunteer, please send an e-mail to Rhoda at
with the following information:
• Which meal portion(s) you would be willing to work on (salad/entrée/side dish/dessert)
• Any menu items you would specifically like to prepare (e.g. - a favorite casserole, stew, cookies, cup cakes,
etc). This will help Rhoda with her menu preparation.
• Any anticipated restrictions on your availability to prepare and deliver through the end of the school year (up to
Memorial Day), (due to being away, etc.)
Any other ideas to help make this a successful initiative.
2. Assist Maot Chittim of Greater Chicago with its annual Passover food distribution to needy Jews - On
Sunday, April 1 (a non-Sunday School day), this organization needs volunteers to 1) pack perishables into the
packages to be delivered (non-perishables will have been previously packed), and then 2) deliver the packages to
the designated recipients. These deliveries will be made in the city of Chicago and in some of the suburbs, most
likely north/northwest. This would be an excellent charitable project to take on with your children - showing them
what it means to be of service to less fortunate Jews. If families would like to group together to make deliveries, this
would be fine. (Just be sure you leave some room in your vehicle for boxes. Don’t carry too many passengers!)
Please contact Mark Melnicoff
if you can volunteer to perform this
valuable service. He will make sure that Maot Chittim is informed of the number of volunteers coming from TBI. If
you prefer to travel “as a caravan”, let Mark know in your reply. Also, please let Mark know if you can volunteer to
help pack perishables (this activity starts at 6 am) and/or make deliveries (this activity starts at 9 am). Information on
where to be and when will be forthcoming.

Now is the time to consider the possibility of hosting an AFS exchange student
for the 2012-13 school year or semester. Students from over 50 countries are hoping for a host family to choose them as a family member for this next year. Would
you consider opening your heart and home to one of these adventuresome young
people and offering them and your family a life expanding opportunity to learn
firsthand about another person and culture?
AFS Intercultural Programs is a nonprofit student exchange organization whose
mission is to work towards the creation of a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families,
schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership. AFS, formerly
known as American Field Service, began as a volunteer ambulance service during
World War I. Today, AFS continues to work towards the healing of the nations by
facilitating student exchange with an ever diversified list of countries, including
countries of the Middle East and former Soviet Union. “And the leaves of the tree
are for the healing of the nations...” Our hope is that these students will become
the leaves of the tree that help heal the nations. If you are interested in learning
more about hosting or volunteering with AFS or becoming an exchange student
yourself, please attend an info night March 13, 7:00 to 8:30 at Geneva Public Library or contact Robbin Lang at

In Memoriam: EDITH KATZ
Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of long-term member, EDITH KATZ, the first female President of the Temple and long-term Board member who passed away Saturday, February 18. Edith and her late husband, Marvin, were extremely active in, and a vital part of, our Temple for many years. She will be missed by so
many.
In the ancient words of the traditional Jewish prayer of consolation: “May the L-rd console and sustain you among the
other mourners for Zion and Jerusalem.” AMEN.
