Kendrion’s Human Capital
People are the vital asset in Kendrion’s further development. Machines and
knowledge can be bought, people choose for a career within Kendrion out
of their own free will. And once with the company, how can we retain our
employees and keep them happy? Recruitment and retention are the big HR
challenges for the future.

Trip for Kendrion apprentices
Going back in time for a day
HR
Every year in September, Kendrion apprentices and trainers
from Engelswies, Donaueschingen, Villingen-Schwenningen
and Markdorf (Germany) meet for a trip together. This
year, the apprentices at Kendrion Magnettechnik GmbH in
Inzigkofen-Engelswies took over the organisation of the trip.
The ruin at Hornstein - with its ancient history and impressive
appearance embodying this year’s ‘Middle Ages’ theme - was
chosen as the meeting point for the trip.

made a next step. From key account management it is moving towards branch
management. Business Unit Manager Norman Graf: “By making our Account
Managers responsible for a single branch we enable them to develop a broader
and deeper insight into the trends, developments and requirements of that branch.
In this way we accelerate our response to customers’ needs and underpin our
position as a real solution provider. On a worldwide scale and in a short time. Our
customers expect professionalism, expertise, experience and knowledge transfer
abilities. Our Branch Managers can offer all this.”
Sales partners
IMS serves eight key branches: machinery & equipment, process automation,
energy, locking & safety, beverage, transportation, consumer products and
medical & pharma. Most of these branches are dominated by global companies
with complex decision and engineering structures. For all eight branches IMS now
has a dedicated Account Manager who will work together with local sales teams
and e.g. specialised engineers. The overall sales management is the responsibility
of Norman Graf, Ralf Vosseler (Donaueschingen) and Volker Buhl (Engelswies). In
its main markets the IMS sales team works closely together with independent sales
partners. Norman Graf: “The most successful ones are those who do not focus on
simple distribution but who are committed and prepared to invest in market and
branch intelligence, together with us.”
Confidence
Sometimes a combination is made of an IMS Account Manager and an independent
sales partner. In 2008 in Italy IMS added its own Key Account Manager to an
existing trading partner. This successful move led to a growth in turnover and
enabled Kendrion IMS to open up its own sales office in Turin, Italy as from the first

Employee of the month
And the winner is…
At Kendrion, we value innovative employee ideas. The
Kendrion idea forum, ‘KENNI’ for short, encourages employees
to engage actively in the development and improvement of all
aspects of their work.
Managing Director of Kendrion Binder Magnete in Eibiswald, Martin Kollmann,
with his special monthly award for the most innovative suggestion for
improvement, sends a clear signal to his employees of the importance and value
of active participation with all of one’s physical and mental powers. Again and
again, he stresses that shortcomings are to be regarded as ‘treasures’ because
they provide the basis for improvement.

Top Management Meeting, Pune, India
Revealing trip to rising
economic power
Once a year Kendrion’s management gathers for its annual management meeting.
This time the trip went to India where the Board and Managers visited the new
local Kendrion Linnig plant. Workshops and lectures dealt with hot items such as
India’s turbulent development and with regular themes like market segmentation,
flexibility and innovation.
Promising
Kendrion India is based in Pune, not far from Mumbai in the west of the country.
This is where Sameer Deshmukh started Kendrion’s Indian greenfield operation.
His first concern was opening up the market. Having reached that point with a
first customer, Sameer Deshmukh and his six colleagues are now preparing for
local production. In Q4 2011 last deliveries will come in from Germany, from then
on Kendrion India has been handling production itself. In addition to the existing
project there are many promising contacts with other potential customers.
Expectations are running high.

award winning teams.
New business
The main reason for the current success lies in IMS’ strength in conceiving
customer specific solutions. Its closeness to the customers is also fundamental to
its understanding of their real and implied needs.
Most of the newly acquired business now actually comes from project
development rather than standard catalogue product sales through a local
partner. In Italy, IMS mainly operates in selected business-to-business industrial
niche markets such as: vending machines, process automation and packaging, fire
safety, medical engineering, transportation and energy distribution.
The decision to move closer to the customers was absolutely right because it is
vital these days to act as a consultant with respect to complex high value sales.
Market share
Despite the extensive and aggressive competition, we are confident that Kendrion
IMS will be increasingly successful in all of the largest European economies, of
which Italy is one, by increasing our market share and realising profits.
Kendrion’s new location in Italy will be in the heart of Turin, one of Italy’s large
industrial areas. We would like to give special thanks to Mr Leo Vincenzo for his
work in preparing this next step in our expansion in this lovely country.

Kendrion at the ‘inova 2011’ job fair
HR
One of the biggest and most successful job fairs ‘inova’ took place again this year
in Ilmenau, Germany. And Kendrion was once again one of the 168 companies
from a variety of disciplines there, seeking qualified students for its companies.
Nowadays early contact between student and company is very important in
arousing interest on the part of students while demonstrating the practical
relevance of the company and thereby increasing the likelihood of an
internship semester. By working together with our many students at the BadenWürttemberg Cooperative State Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences,
Kendrion has already collected a lot of positive experiences. That is why we
would like to continue to give students the possibility of gaining their first job
experience at our company.
The ‘inova’ job fair is run annually by a team of 40 students from the Technical
University of Ilmenau. Interest in Kendrion was again very high this year; we are

CVS at the ‘electric avenue’, 2 - 5 June
2011, Friedrichshafen, Germany
In October Kendrion’s CSR Board met for the second time.
After a successful kick-off in July the CSR Board, consisting
of ten people from different business units and staff
departments, now discussed first tangible ideas and developed
a dash board in which the key topics can be monitored. It also
formulated its ambition statement and targets and decided
what is needed to reach these.
The members of the CSR Board - all with a special interest in CSR related topics
- have organised their agenda around a few major themes: energy, matters
concerning our own employees (e.g. employee satisfaction, health, sickness
and accident ratio’s), anti-corruption and supply chain cooperation. More and
more, our bigger customers ask Kendrion to sign their code of conduct. In return,

Another important issue on the CSR Board agenda is community investment.
Examples of community investment are sponsoring, volunteer work or
scholarships. The CSR Board asks everybody within Kendrion to inspire them
with ideas for a corporate community investment project. Such project should
fulfil the following conditions:
a. A clear connection with Kendrion’s business, product or techniques;
b. Involvement of a substantial number of Kendrion’s employees; and
c. Effective return for both the community and Kendrion after a (cost) efficient

During my stay in the USA, the factory was undergoing
extensive renovation. The entrance was being widened
and extended for an exhibition displaying American
solenoids and valves. I created the data sheets that showed
the unique features and technical data of each individual
product that was displayed.
One additional assignment entrusted to me was the
transformation of the Kendrion Tri-Tech website. For this, I
created a design for the new layout. Other projects, such as
updating the company presentation, research on potential
customers in the agricultural engineering and beverage
industries and a search for competitors in bistable rotary
magnets in the USA market kept me busy for the entire
three months.
However, these many assignments did not keep me from

Kids@Kendrion Room
HR
Today’s Kendrion is not only an innovative and future-oriented
company, it is also a family-friendly one and constantly trying
to become even more family-friendly.
Organisational handstands are often necessary for parents to bring
their home life into line with the high demands of their professional life.
Despite careful planning, this may still not always work. That is why the
business units PCS/IDS introduced a so-called Kids@Kendrion room which
provides an alternative to a missed day of work for a parent. Their aim
is to further support parents with children in organising the appropriate
work/life balance. PCS/IDS are proud to be able to offer their employees
at the Villingen location a parent-child workroom. Also because the
team’s diversity adds to the success of the company.
Meetings
On 15 April 2011 Heinz Freitag formally inaugurated the Kids@Kendrion
Room. It is a child-oriented and suitably outfitted workroom which
can be used on short notice and without bureaucratic complications,
should supervisory emergencies occur at home and for use on job
assignments. In addition to these emergencies, the room will be used
for informational meetings with the mother who is on parental leave.
These meetings are held quarterly and serve to maintain regular contact
with Kendrion. Participants include the above-mentioned mothers
with their children, their current supervisors, their mentors as well as a
representative from the Human Resources department.
The Kids@Kendrion Room is one more step towards making family life
more compatible with work.

100 years of electromagnetism
2011 was a memorable and hectic year for Kendrion. Not only did we experience an unprecedented boost in our
business, we also commemorated 100 years of electromagnetism. Throughout the year all kinds of festivities, events
and celebrations were organised. Some large-scale and impressive by their sheer size, others small and intimate. But all

They can develop their technical skills but almost equally

In Germany we employ more than 70 apprentices and
