Special recognition was given to Mike and Kitty Garvey and Thom and Sheryl Hill. Mike and Kitty Garvey have been dedicated and energetic supporters of the GPL Friends Foundation. They were hosts for the Tables of Contents fundraiser and, with Mike's support, Kitty spearheaded the gala library event, Night on the Plaza for the last twelve years. This event has raised over $1.5 for the library's early childhood education, book fund and adult literacy outreach. Both Mike and Kitty's companies, Zeta Systems and Crestwood Communities, have been supporters and major sponsors of Night on the Plaza. In addition to the Night on the Plaza, Crestwood Communities supports the teen book trivia competition 'Battle of the Books' and sponsors a team for the Great Trivia Challenge. Kitty joined the GPL Friends Foundation Board in 2000 and is now an Emeritus member. Glendora Public Library and the GPL Friends Foundation have benefited from Thom and Sheryl's leadership, advocacy and their time as volunteers since 1992. Thom joined the board of the GPL Friends Foundation in 2006. Never one to sit idle, he served as co-Vice President of Fund Development from 20072009 and served as President from 2009-2012. The honorary construction foremen were Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, Papadakis Racing owner Stephan Papadakis, Formula DRIFT President & Co-Founder Jim Liaw and Grand Prix Association of Long Beach President & CEO Jim Michaelian. Also onhand were the Papadakis Racing Scion tC, which will be driven in 2013 by top Drifting driver Frederic Aasbo, and, courtesy of Toyota Motorsports, an all-new, raceprepared Scion FR-S that will be driven in the 2013 Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race. “Our race circuit will feature something extra this year as we will be hosting the first-ever night racing in the Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge on Friday and Saturday,” said Michaelian. “Along with the six other racing events here in April, this should make for one of the most entertaining weekends in our history.” The setting of the first of more than 14 million pounds of concrete blocks that line the track marks the beginning of two months of work preparing for the 175,000 fans expected The San Gabriel Valley Examiner during race weekend. “It’s three days of great parties and great racing,” said Foster. “The Grand Prix brings a lot of people to Long Beach. The heavy-duty blocks and fencing, however, are merely a start. “Leading up to race weekend, our staff will also install hospitality suites, tents, electrical equipment, phones, porta-johns, trash containers and a hundred other little things up until race weekend,” said Dwight Tanaka, director of operations for the Grand Prix Association. “Then, when the last checkered flag falls on Sunday night, we start to take everything down, inspect it and get ready for next year.” All businesses along the race circuit, which includes Shoreline Drive, Aquarium Way and Pine Ave., will remain open during construction of the racetrack. The 2013 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will feature rac- ing from the IZOD IndyCar Series, Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series, Firestone Indy Lights, Pirelli World Challenge, Formula DRIFT, Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD Stadium SUPER Trucks and the Toyota Pro/ Celebrity Race. Former U.S. Poet Laureate to Speak at Azusa Pacific University AZUSA — APU’s Center for Research on Ethics and Values (CREV) and the Department of English welcome Robert Pinsky, Ph.D., former United States Poet Laureate and internationally recognized author, to present a sampling of his powerful, innovative poems. This free event is open to the public and will take place in APU’s Upper Turner Campus Center, located on APU’s East Campus, at 901 E. Alosta Ave., in Azusa, on Tues., March 5, from 7–8 p.m. Pinsky served as the United States Poet Laureate, the nation’s official poet, for an unprecedented three terms (1997–2000), during which he became one of America’s most beloved poets and raised the national appreciation of poetry. In 1997, he founded the Favorite Poem Project, an initiative inviting thousands of Americans from varying ages and backgrounds to share their favorite poems and reinforce the value of poetry in American culture. “Poetry gives tremendous pleasure; it brings a physical sensation of saying something that feels right,” said Pinsky. In his poetry, Pinsky explores new territories of language usage and employs moving, energetic rhythms. His poetry collection The Figured Wheel: New and Collected Poems 1966–96 received numerous awards and a Pulitzer Prize nomination. He also published groundbreaking volumes on poetry as an art form, The Sounds of Poetry and Poetry and the World, which received a National Book Critics’ Circle Award nomination. A graduate professor at Boston University, Robert Pinsky, Ph.D., former United States Poet Laureate Pinsky frequently writes for prestigious publications such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, American Poetry Review, and The Best American Poetry anthologies. “Poetry shows that language is more than just words, but an art form that calls us to pay closer attention to the world,” said Mark Eaton, Ph.D., professor in the Department of English and director of CREV. “It also helps students understand the magnificent beauty and power of language. Through poetry, we gain a better appreciation for one of God’s greatest gifts: the ability to artfully describe His creation and communicate essential truths about the human experience.” The James L. Hedges Distinguished Lecture Series exists to celebrate the written word through a series of endowed lectures by writers and literary critics of national stature who imaginatively explore the world through their creative use of language and literary forms.
