Irish Film Institute Education Spring/Summer Programme 2010 The Hurt Locker Entre les murs Where the Wild Things Are Billy Elliot Rudo y Cursi IFI Education Senior Cycle Supporting film in school curricula English and promoting moving image culture for young audiences. Welcome to our schools’ programme for Spring 2010. The start of the year means award ceremonies for film, from Golden Globes to that small golden statuette known as Oscar. We’ve added the hotly-tipped titles Bright Star and The Hurt Locker to our lineup, both pretty impressive films and not only for having female directors - a fairly rare occurrence in big name filmmaking. We had a terrific response to our programme last term, with several sold-out events, despite well-founded fears regarding the impact of education cutbacks, and we are greatly encouraged by your ongoing support. Another feature of the last programme was our Film Focus survey. The response to this revealed some interesting facts which will inform the project’s next phase of action research. With a host of titles to engage you and your students throughout Spring, film topics include Iraq, football, Vogue magazine and love in a time of war. IFI also launches two new programme strands which may be of interest: TEEN SCREEN Film Club on Wednesdays for those aged 15-18 who want to experience a world of cinema beyond the blockbusters, and IFI Family which offers a special family screening of new and different films on one Sunday each month. Further information on these and all our events can be found on our website www.ifi.ie. Please note: • Book early to avoid disappointment • Our no-show policy is as follows: A no-show of 5+ students will be charged to your school Entire group no-show will be charged €50 • Cancellations must be made 3 days in advance • Teachers must sit among students and supervise them closely during screenings • All our events adhere to IFI Child Protection Policy Guidelines (see www.lightsout.ie/child_protection.htm). Please consult these when booking. • See www.ifco.ie for details on classification For booking or more information on IFI Education events, contact Dee or Baz: t 01 679 5744 e schools@irishfilm.ie All IFI Education events commence at 10.30am. €5 admission unless otherwise stated. Laurent Cantet’s excellent film is a story of life in a contemporary French classroom, where cultures and attitudes clash, and the teacher’s methods are put to the test by his challenging students. France • 2008 • Drama • 128 mins • English subtitles Director: Laurent Cantet Kristen Scott Thomas excels in this award-winning French drama that tells the story of Juliette Fontaine, a woman struggling to fit back into society after spending fifteen years in prison. With no knowledge of the crime she committed, her younger sister Léa invites Juliette to stay with her. Gradually Juliette begins to fit in with her family and colleagues, and the plot leads inexorably towards Juliette’s revelation of the crime she committed. There he uses his unique skills to forge portraits and it doesn’t take him long to attract the attention of the Nazi guards. Sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp he, along with an equally capable team of counterfeiters, is forced to produce fake currency as part of Operation Bernhard. Its goal was to destabilise the UK by flooding its economy with forged Bank of England currency. Salomon must decide whether his actions are right as his skills are being used to prolong the Nazi war effort. Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, famed for their performances in Y Tu Mamá También, reunite for this comical drama. Bernal and Luna play half-brothers Tato and Beto who have a typical love/hate relationship and live an impoverished lifestyle on a banana plantation. Their fortunes change when they are spotted playing football by an opportunistic talent scout who gives one of them the chance to make it big in Mexico City. They both end up playing for rival teams and experience the highs, lows and sexual encounters that accompany fame and success. With one a goalkeeper and the other a striker, their fate ultimately rests upon one spot kick. A Jury Prize winner at Cannes in 2008, this is an excellent cinematic biopic of seven-time Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, a political titan whose career was dogged with controversy. As a leader he forged close ties with the Vatican but also found himself the subject of a number of high profile criminal trials for the murder of an Italian journalist and for having connections with the Mafia. The film spans his seventh election to office of Prime Minister in 1992 up until his trial and acquittal. With a towering performance by Toni Servillo in the lead role and masterful direction by Paolo Sorrentino, this film is a fascinating look at the extraordinary life of one of Italy’s most enigmatic politicians. Japan has given us some of the most dazzlingly original animated films over the years. Groundbreaking titles such as Akira and Ghost in the Shell have gained cult status internationally and have been hugely influential. To coincide with the Japanese Anime Weekend at the IFI in March, we will be screening one title from the programme for a schools’ audience. Like many before him, Sugar’s desire to play in the big league is a marriage of ambition and necessity, as his talent can earn the money needed to support his impoverished family. His journey takes him to rural Iowa and New York, and through his eyes we experience awe and alienation as he faces the challenges presented by being a major league import. This film weaves the drama of Sugar’s personal story in with the wider issue of talent recruitment from Latin America and its repercussions for the individual and families involved. Director Jane Campion (The Piano) returns to form with this fine, delicate drama about the 19th century poet John Keats and his love affair with the girl next door, Fanny Brawne. They begin at odds but soon become intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other. Keats’ poetry becomes a romantic remedy which not only resolves their differences, but also fuels an impassioned love affair. Campion’s subtle approach to this affectionate story of love, loss and poetry, alongside outstanding performances from Abbie Cornish and Ben Wishaw, creates a stunning film which attracts not only those interested in Keats but any with an interest in the written word. Set amidst the tense and chaotic environment of urban Baghdad, this thrilling Oscar-tipped drama follows a company of elite US soldiers tasked with one of the most nerve-wracking and deadly jobs in combat: disarming roadside bombs. When renegade Staff Sergeant William James joins Bravo Company’s bomb disposal unit, their tour of duty is in its final stages. His wild methods and thrill for dismantling leaves them open to danger, and in a city where chaos lurks around the next corner, James’ risk-taking pushes them all to the edge as they struggle to survive the end of their tour. Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break) crafts a masterful and gripping take on modern conflict. The story of one of the fashion industries most powerful figures, Anna Wintour, British-born editor of US Vogue, as she oversees the creation of the September 2007 issue of the ‘style bible’. Rumoured to have inspired Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada, Wintour has ruled Vogue for 20 years. Feared and respected in equal measure, she has been referred to as ‘Nuclear’ Wintour. Being such a controlling force, it is all the more remarkable that director R. J. Cutler gained such unprecedented access to both her and the hallowed halls of Vogue. Irlan and Isabela both want to dance ballet, and their ambition is to leave Brazil to join one of the great North American companies. For them, dance is the way out, offering an ecstasy that is rarely found in their day-to-day lives. The question is, can they make it? Only When I Dance follows these two gifted teenagers during the year that will make or break their dream, to dance the most perfect dance against all the odds of race and circumstance. Neil Gaiman’s novel has been brilliantly adapted for the screen by Henry Selick, with the director’s unique and stylish stop-motion animation. A modern-day Alice in Wonderland, Coraline enters another world through a mysterious door where she finds a sinister ‘other mother’ who has trapped her real parents. Desperate to escape, Coraline is faced with one weird situation after another as the parents behave in ever more peculiar and threatening ways. Mixing horror with humour, the film has its scary moments, and will delight those who have enjoyed the highly original book. A thrilling tale of a true hero, Astro Boy is an all-new, feature film full of action, adventure, humour and heart, brought to life on the big screen in breathtaking CGI animation. Set in futuristic Metro City, it’s about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist named Dr. Tenma (Nicolas Cage). Powered by positive ‘blue’ energy, Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore) is endowed with super strength, X-Ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly. Embarking on a journey in search of acceptance, Astro Boy encounters many other colourful characters along the way and learns the joys and emotions of being human. Innovative director Spike Jonze collaborates with celebrated author Maurice Sendak to bring one of the most beloved children’s books to the big screen. Where the Wild Things Are is a classic story about childhood and the places we go to figure out the world we live in. The film tells the story of Max, an energetic and sensitive boy who feels misunderstood at home and escapes to an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions. In conjunction with this hugely popular event, IFI will screen a number of films, including this 1945 adaptation by Albert Lewin. 2010 began with the official launch of the redeveloped IFI including the new Cinema 3, and the publication of our in-depth study guide, Wider Visions. We would like to invite teachers to join us in our new cinema and see how IFI can work as a resource for you and your students. George Sanders (All About Eve) is world-weary Lord Henry Wootton who introduces Dorian to hedonistic living, and Angela Lansbury plays his put-upon fiancée, Sybil. This fine adaptation is in classic black and white with some dashes of colour. Dorian’s dark secret is beautifully manifested by the film’s lighting and the faithful screenplay loses none of the novel’s wit or lesson on vanity and ego. Find out about teaching Wider Visions, visit the library, book screenings or a workshop, order films from our new Film Shop, experience IFI Cinemas and follow-up the evening with a glass of wine in the refurbished café bar. Would you like to learn more about college assessments and see the kind of projects film students do? Or have a chance to comment on their work? During the second year of their course, Film & Television Production students of the National Film School (NFS) at IADT carry out a research project into an aspect of the industry. As part of this they make a presentation to a panel on their chosen topic, e.g. production, cinematography. On April 19th, the 2nd year students will make their presentations in IFI to their tutors and a schools’ audience. This is a great chance to learn more about their projects and to give your opinion on third level work. The Dublin and Leinster heats of Ireland’s Young Filmmaker Awards at the Fresh Film Festival will take place at IFI. If you have entered or would just like an opportunity to see some of the fantastic films being made by Ireland’s latest generation of young filmmakers, then this is the event for you.
