Our Awbrey Glen - Awbrey Glen Golf Club
Our Awbrey Glen Come for the Golf, Stay for the Friendships The Awbrey Glen Golf Club Newsletter · Fall 2015 reflections from your president - gary chandler Fall is here and, once again, a changing of the guard is in the works at Awbrey Glen Golf Club. We will install three new Board members and those of us who have served for the last three years will move on to our next adventure. I have enjoyed my tenure on the Board and the opportunity to get to know our club, my fellow Board members, and Club management and staff a little better. As members, be comforted if not proud that your Board is made up of a group of individuals that bring impressive credentials, a passion for our club’s well being, and not a single personal agenda to the table. We don’t always agree on the issues, and we occasionally engage in vigorous (but respectful) debate, but we always leave the room unified in our belief that the governance process is working for the Club’s best interest. Our club’s leadership, past and present, has been and continues to be committed to future thinking and planning: • • • In 2009, when we became a member owned club, the first Board recognized the need to establish our Mission, Vision, and Values, that define who we are and serve as the guiding principals for all future decision making and ventures. Adhering to these principals has helped the Awbrey Glen Board and management retain the qualities in our club that continue to attract and retain members even as we have changed and evolved over the past 6+ years. We have a member-created LLC financing entity in place that made purchasing the Club possible in 2009 and helped us through some pretty tough economic times in the early years. Fortunately, the last few years have been cash flow healthy, and we look forward to continuing that trend in the future. We have a golf course master plan and a long range facilities plan in place to guide future improvements to the Club. Our committees, both Standing and Advisory, serve as a critical link in the governance process and as conduits for members to communicate their thoughts and suggestions to the Board and Management. Throughout the year I attended one or more meetings of each of our committees. I can confidently convey that our committees are active, effective, and staffed with volunteers that are committed to the Club’s well being and optimizing the member experience. Thank you to all who have served / are serving as committee members! Thank you to the Club’s management team for another year of dedication and commitment to delivering a high quality member experience. Thanks to you, the members, for your continued support, engagement, and commitment to the best golf club in Central Oregon. Let’s continue to “Come for the golf, stay for the friendships”. move the flag 72 update The Move The Flag 72 campaign, launched in April, 2015 has been a huge success! We’ve already enrolled 58 new members since the launch and the 72 Flag is currently sitting on Hole #15. Only two more members before the Flag moves to Hole #16, and that’s a Par 3! Even though the days are getting cooler and shorter, there is still a lot of fun golf and winter activities ahead. Take a look at the 72 Board in the lobby and you will see the names of our “New 72” along with pictures on the NEW MEMBER Board next to Barbara Malcom’s office. We welcomed 51 ladies this year, which was a great treat for everyone to have such a fun and vibrant group of ladies playing on Wednesday mornings. Tommy Berg, our “golf mentor” and Assistant Pro was there to provide us with fun and different games to challenge our golf skills. As to our Niner group, we just enjoyed our time on the course together and our luncheons afterward. We celebrated new members who joined us each week, and reveled in those who came to play each week with us. A special thank you to Sue Thompson , Deb Warren , Annie Goldner and Barbara Malcolm who joined us many times and added another spark with their knowledge and golf skills to our new ladies in the Niners who began golf this season, or restarted to play the game again. We saw great growth in skills with everyone, but, most of all we saw the wonderful new friendships that formed within our group. We had so much fun this season beginning with our welcome luncheon, our visitations to other clubs in the area, and of course, our own, very fun, visitation held here at Awbrey Glen. A lovely thing happened on the way to the Niners.. nobody wants it to end, so be on the lookout for events we will be planning throughout the winter for all of us to join together for some Luncheons, more golf (weather permitting), and some painting might be in your future…! Gail Moulton & Darrin Houser Members enjoying the patio at Awbrey Glen AGWGA What a great 2015 Season! This summer brought fabulous weather. I hope all ladies were able to get on the course to enjoy this wonderful game of golf. Ladies Sweeps on Thursday had a very high level of participation for the season indicating that many of us were doing just that! Our thanks to our Golf Course Superintendent Doug and his crew for a fabulous course; Golf Shop staff and attendants for great instructions and support; Darrin and his staff and Gail/Kelly and their staffs for wonderful dining experiences; and Administration for all their support and assistance. AGWGA Members to Birdies for Babies, a charitable promotion for Mountain Star Family Relief Nursery. Impressive play for a great cause. With such a beautiful Fall we are looking forward to many more splendid days of golf. Enjoy everyone one of them! A few interesting statistics about those birdies: Every hole but 10 was birdied. Forty different women had birdies during the season. The top three birdie holes were #8, #5, and #3, in that order, accounting for 30% of the total birdies. AGWGA had a very busy season with sweeps, tournaments, and outside play at other Central Oregon courses. This season was full of personal bests, fun formats, and terrific tournaments. We had a tremendous increase in participation in all areas over last year. Thank you to all ladies for making this a very special and successful year! 2015 AGWGA membership was 77! One weekly sweeps game in particular brought out the best in some while frustrating others. We had a 4 clubs plus a putter game. Interesting, a number of ladies shot their season best with just a fraction of clubs normally carried in their bags. Do we dare say, “What does that mean?” Perhaps fewer choices without agonizing over yardage has advantages! And, as we know, it ultimately comes down to the short game. The women of Awbrey Glen count birdies for Thursday Sweeps and most tournaments. Over the season we posted 161 birdies! Kudos to Rosie for her 44 birdies plus two eagles! Many of the players either chipped in or landed on the green in regulation, closing the birdie deal with a one putt. AGWGA contributed one dollar for each birdie Although these Hole-in-Ones did not happen during Sweeps or tournaments, we would like to congratulate members Carol Lee and Pauline Rhoads for their wonderful accomplishment! Way to go ladies. Have a terrific Fall and Winter. We look forward to seeing everyone on the course Spring of 2016! fore | mark amberson Fore, As the golf and summer event season winds down we’d like to thank everyone who helped organize the various tournaments, served on committees, led hiking, biking, or canoe outings, Explorer outings etc… and all of you that participated in the various club events. It has been an active summer with still more fun to come! Please keep an eye on your emails and the Club’s website for more information. Congratulations to Glen Gives for another incredible event and fundraising. The 11th annual Glen Gives dinner and auction were enjoyed by over 140 members. Needy families in Central Oregon will once again be given a hand up thanks to your support. Thank you to the many members who contributed countless hours in preparing for this event. Awbrey Glen Golf Club is a thriving active Club with great members who are supportive of not only this Club but our community. We have seen great progress this year in not only growing our membership but in making improvements to the golf course and facilities. “My Awbrey Glen” is different for everyone, but I believe there is one common thread amongst us all; you came for the golf (or pool, social activities, events, etc…) but you stayed for the friendships. Thank you! I would like to extend a sincere thank you to your three outgoing Board members; Gary Chandler, Pauline Rhoads, and Bob Scott. These folks have given a significant amount of time to the Club over the past three years as your Board members; thank you for that you have done for me and for the Club. Have a great Holiday Season, Mark Amberson, General Manager/COO Men’s Golf Committee Update The 2015 men’s golf season completed another successful year. From the April kickoff dinner with speaker Brian Whitcomb to the closer in October all ran very smoothly. The Men’s Golf Committee met every month of the year to continuously improve upon the product for men’s golf. In one of our feature events, the Awbrey Cup, we witnessed the kind of sportsmanship that is rooted in the close friendships we find throughout our club. In Ryder Cup fashion twenty-four players are divided into two teams competing over three days. Traditionally the winning team celebrates with a prime rib dinner while the losing team “feasts” on sloppy Joes. This year the event ended in a tie. There was no precedent for settling a tie. The team that was ahead in points after the second day of competition spontaneously chose to split the meal evenly between all participants. Good sports! Good friends! Fun golf! Men’s Awbrey Cup Team Our June Match Play event was also a big hit. After a Saturday morning Stableford qualifier, a dozen or more participants anxiously waited to see if they would advance to the first round of match play. There was quite a buzz around the scoreboard. At the conclusion of the event Sunday afternoon, the Grille was filled with participants and well wishers congratulating the winning players. The MGC wanted a strong turnout for the end of the event and we got that turnout. Other goals that were met for the 2015 season: continued emphasis on the pace of play, teeing it forward, inaugural putting contest, production of the second edition of the men’s handbook, coordination of men’s event dinners between the MGC and chef Darrin, expanding the Awbrey Cup from 20 players to 24, elimination of scorecard playoffs for ties, the Rogue Valley and Medford Spring golf trip, and recognition of the low gross scorer in the Wednesday sweeps event. Planning for the 2016 season starts immediately. At this writing two goals for the 2016 season will be to increase participation in the Saturday men’s game and increase the number of participants in the overall club championship flight. Thanks to all for a great 2015 season.
