Guitarist and composer Jostein Gulbrandsen, grew up in Norway
and started playing the guitar at the age of 9. In 1997 he attended
Agder College of music in Norway. After two years he left to continue
his studies at University of North Texas. He later moved to New York
to attend Manhattan School of Music. He studied with Chris
Rosenberg, Dave Liebman and Phil Markowitz and received his
Masters of Music in Jazz Performance in 2003. He released his first
CD "Twelve" in 2007 (with Jon Irabagon, Eivind Opsvik and Jeff
Davis) on the Spanish record label Fresh Sound New Talent. The CD
was recently on the top 5 list in Village Voice, NY (Tom Hulls jazz
consumers guide), and has been played on NPR and received great
reviews both in Europe, the U.S and Japan. He has performed at
several great venues with his own groups and as a sideman, including Blue Note, Blues Alley, The
Kennedy Center, B.B Kings Blues Bar, Hard Rock Cafe NYC, Smalls, Cornelia Street Cafe,
Saint Peter's Church and Bar Next Door. He has also toured in Scotland and Japan. As a
sideman he has worked in many musical genres, both live and in
the studio. In 2005 Gulbrandsen performed for the Norwegian
Royal Family, where he was featured both as a composer and
improviser. This concert was shown on Norwegian National
television. He later worked with the Norwegian SONY/BMG artist
Christine Guldbrandsen. He plays guitar on Matt Grason Motel
projects "Lost and found" a CD that received great reviews in
Jazz Times Magazine and Mari Tochi’s “Aligato” and Nathaniel
Smith's Fresh Sound release "Quartet". He leads Jostein
Gulbrandsen trio and is also involved in projects with Gian
Tornatore and Megumi Yonezawa. In 2011 he recorded with
Norwegian Artist San Elmo and he is playing on his new EP that
was just released and received airplay on National Radio.
Thomas Popper has spent his entire life working to become the #1 real
estate mogul in New York City. He has sacrificed everything...friends,
family, and even his own happiness. But on the brink of the biggest deal
of his career, he receives a gift - a mysterious crate from Antarctica from his long missing father. What's inside the crate marks the end of
Popper's comfortable and well-ordered existence, and
the beginning of his new life as caretaker, landlord and
parent figure to six unforgettable penguins, each with a
distinct personality.
“Mr. Popper’s Penguins, based on the venerable and
charming children’s book by Richard and Florence
Atwater, signifies an important stage in Jim Carrey’s
maturation, or at least his transition from nitwit
man-child to goofy dad. “ The New York Times
The July 27th movie will mark the debut of KRVC’s new 20 foot
movie screen purchased under a generous grant sponsored by New
York State Senator Jeff Klein. The movie
screen is one of several purchases to be made
under this grant to support the movie nights
and festivals held by KRVC.
Our senator is supportive
of all the work of KRVC and
of all organizations who
bring vibrant, community-building events to his district,
which now includes all of Riverdale. KRVC is very
grateful for his help and excited to own the equipment
they need to hold their movie nights and festivals, which
will include tents, a bouncy castle, carnival games, a
projector, sound system, portable stage and much more.
KRVC's logo has featured 3 blocks for about 3
decades and we are celebrating that with our new,
fun, interactive, signature exhibit—”BLOCKS.” We
launched the first exhibit recently at RiverFest with
a table featuring BLOCKS banners , signs and
Legos. It was a real hit! BLOCKS are a fun way to
really symbolize what KRVC is all about and stay
true to its history. Be sure to check out BLOCKS at
all our upcoming KRVC events. It’s an exhibit where
kids (and adults) can create and build. The BLOCKS
exhibit demonstrates how, in many ways, we can
come together and: Build a Better Community 1
Block at a Time!
