Open House for New Windsor Middle
7th & 8th Grade Students
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The start of a new school year is right around the corner.
Each year we have the opportunity for a fresh start and to
set goals for the upcoming year. The 2016-17 school year
begins a new chapter for our school community due to the
closure of New Windsor Middle. When the doors open
this fall, we will be welcoming 750 students to our school
and we will be a direct feeder to South Carroll High
School. As you will see when you read the newsletter, we
have many new staff and will be offering new classes in
STEM and Humanities to 7th & 8th grade students due to
our increased enrollment.
As we welcome new students to the Mt. Airy Middle
community and reunite with our returning students, we
will continue to focus on the areas of Character,
Academics, and Citizenship as described in our school
vision. We are proud of our past accomplishments and
plan to achieve more with our students this year. Our
PTO has been working throughout the summer to ensure
we provide a welcoming setting and great experiences for
all of our students. Please review the PTO information
contained within the newsletter and consider how you can
help.
The newsletter contains school and county procedures and
interesting information about our staff. The postcard that
was mailed to you indicated your child’s homeroom
teacher and can be found on page 4. The safety of our
students and staff continues to be a priority. Please read
about our procedures for visitors, signing students out, and
be sure that we have up to date custody information
regarding your child.
Mt. Airy Middle is truly a remarkable school community
consisting of engaged students, involved parents,
committed staff members, and a supportive community. I
would like to extend a warm welcome to our new families
and new staff to the Mt. Airy Middle family.

MAMS PTO
Welcome to a new school year! The MAMS PTO will be
starting out the new year with some exciting
changes! Our name will now be MAMS PTO not PTSO.
You can get updates on PTO sponsored events,
important dates and news you need to know from our
Mt Airy Middle School PTO Facebook page: https://
www.facebook.com/groups/833152683456206/. Ask to
join and we will post information regularly.
Our new executive board has been reviewing the
budget this summer and have determined what we
need to make the 2016/2107 school year a great one!
Every year the board meets and determines what we
have in potential revenue before deciding where to best
spend the money we receive. In the past 3 years our
revenue has been decreasing due to less money being
received from fundraisers. So...we are getting rid of
fundraisers!
How will we meet our budget then? We are requesting
that each family at MAMS contributes to their school to
keep our programs and events going. The funding we
will receive goes towards items such as cultural arts,
field trips, teacher appreciation, and the 8th grade
dance. If we run short, we will have to cut items or add
fundraisers. If we exceed the goal, we will add items for
the school, students, and teachers.
We will continue to offer services of Yankee Candle,
Hershey Park tickets, and Schwan's to bring in
revenue. We will not send home a packet with every
child, but will send you website links or papers if you
want to participate. We also will have volunteer
openings on our committees for Teacher Appreciation,
Yankee Candle, Schwan's, 8th grade dance, and
possibly a 5K fun run. We will be using "Sign up
Genius" to post opportunities to be involved.
We look forward to seeing more of you at our evening
meetings and look forward to you being a part of our
events this year!

Helpful tips…
Student Drop off Time: Students may be dropped off at school beginning at 7:55am. No supervision will be provided prior to 7:55am. Any student
arriving after 8:15am will be considered tardy and should report to the office for a Tardy Slip. Students who are tardy must enter at the visitor entrance.
Reporting Absences: If your student will be absent or late to school in the morning, please call or send an email by 8:30am to avoid getting an a utomated absent call. Emails must be addressed to mamattendance@carrollk12.org. Please be aware that all other emails to this account (e.g. early dismissal,
work requests) will be disregarded. When reporting in this manner, please include; student’s full name, grade, homeroom teacher, date, reason for absence,
and parent’s name and contact information. If you do not report a student absent by email or phone, the students are required to present a note signed by a
parent or legal guardian substantiating a reason for the absence. Notes should be brought in on the day the student returns to school.
Early Dismissals: Parents wishing to pick up their student may do so with permission from the parent and approval from the school. All reque sts
must be in writing and brought to the office by 8:15am. Parents must sign-out students in the office. If parents wish for someone else to pick up their son or
daughter, there must be a written request. Anyone picking up a student should be prepared to present a photo ID.
If you move or change your work or home phone numbers, please send the changes, in writing, to the school office. In the event of a move, we will
also require proof of residency in the form of a recent utility bill.
Students are permitted to have one am and one pm bus stop. In case of an emergency, students may request to ride a different bus or to get off at a
different stop. Notes must be provided from the receiving and sending parents stating the reason for the request and must be given to the school office for approval. If a request is denied, parents of the student requesting the change will be notified.
Legal Custody of Children: It is extremely important to keep the school informed of any custody agreements concerning your child. An official court
order or court document is required to establish guidelines for custody and/or restrictions. Please contact the school immediately if there is any change in the
custody situation of your child.
Visitors to the building: In order to make our school the safest environment possible for both students and staff, we require that all volunteers and
visitors wear an ID badge while in the school. As always, everyone must check into the main office upon entering the building. Parents are not permitted to go
back to the classrooms without an administrator’s approval.
Medication Reminder
Students may not transport medication of any kind.
Medication must be brought to school by a parent.
All medication, for student use during the school day, must be brought in by an adult in its original container
with a completed medication form. The CCPS Medication form - front & back - can be downloaded from the Mt. Airy
Middle School website (under Parent Resources). Click the link for the form: Front Page of Form Back Page of Form
The age appropriate doses of Tylenol and Advil/Motrin only need a parent’s signature on the form. If your child is not 12
years of age, they will have to take the children’s form of the above medication, unless your doctor also signs the
medication form. All other over-the-counter and prescription medication must have a parent and doctor’s signature on the
medication form.
The following items are not considered to be medications and therefore students may carry them without being in
violation of our drug and alcohol procedure:





Chapstick
Non-medicated cough drops (Ludens’, Halls, & Fruit Breezers.) Sucrets,
Chloraseptic and Cepacol would be considered a medication
Saline eye drops
Hand cream/lotions
Sunscreen
Please have your child bring in a parent note for cough drops or a water bottle. The
nurse will need to sign and copy.

It is important for students to see the value of learning by doing homework. Though our goal is for
your child to be an independent learner, your involvement is paramount. Encourage them to work
at a specific place independently. Please place importance on your child’s homework by
monitoring his or her assignments; ask questions about and discuss their responses. We have
great confidence that these guidelines, with your help, will make a big difference for your child.

We will encourage students to take home only those supplies and books needed to complete
homework on a given night.

Students are expected to write assignments in their agenda books, which are provided by the
PTO.

Assignments are to be a product of student research and written by the student. Any clear
plagiarism will be penalized.
Meet the Teams
Grade 6 Blue
Mr. Anderson, teaches Math and is the 6 Blue Team Leader. He grew up in the Los Angeles
area and attended college in Nebraska. He lives in Howard County with his wife Cyndy and their
dog Willow.
Ms. Andersen teaches Sixth Grade ancient civilizations. She loves spending time with her
two young daughters, running with her vizsla, eating humongous ice-cream sundaes, and
teaching sixth graders!
Mrs. Barnes, ELA, is excited to meet our incoming sixth graders. She enjoys spending time with
her family, especially vacationing in Ocean City. Together, they also enjoy canoeing and
kayaking along the Susquehanna River.
Mrs. Poole, ELA, is really excited to be coming home to Mt. Airy after many years of
teaching in the county. She grew up here, and attended Mt. Airy Elementary and Mt. Airy
Middle. She lives in Westminster with her husband, Jim and their two kids. Elizabeth is 20 and
will be a junior at York College in the fall, and Nathan will be a senior at Winters Mill High
School. They all love to watch and play sports and hang out with their 4 pets, 2 dogs, and 2
cats. See you in August!
Ms. Sollie teaches Sixth Grade Science. She loves the lab work and Discovery Education
software. She does a bit of gardening, and loves to be outdoors. She lives with an out of control
cat adopted from the humane society who pretty much runs the place!
Grade 6 Gold
Mrs. Whitten, English Language Arts teacher and 6 Gold Team Leader, is spending her
summer traveling and visiting with family and friends. Some of her hobbies include cooking,
reading, and playing with her Boston Terrier dog, Bella. She’s looking forward to meeting
everyone in August, although Bella is really going to miss her when school starts again!
Mrs. McGurk teaches sixth grade Social Studies at Mt. Airy Middle. She grew up in
Michigan and has traveled the world courtesy of the U.S. Army. She enjoys spending time with
her family and dogs. In her free time, she wrestles alligators and searches for the Loch Ness
Monster and Bigfoot.
Mr. Nave is married with five children. One son graduated from Towson University and is
employed as an accountant, a daughter who just graduated in the spring from East Carolina
University and will be a nurse at University of Maryland Hospital in the NICU department, a
daughter beginning her junior year at West Virginia University in the dental program, a son
attending Westminster High School and a daughter who is beginning 6th grade at West
Middle. He graduated from James Madison University and Western Maryland College. He
enjoys golf (and math), exercising (and math), summer vacations spent at the beach (and math)
and coaching high school athletics (and math).
Mr. Scholl is starting his 10th year of teaching sixth grade physical science at Mt. Airy Middle.
When not in school, he usually spends time hiking, camping, and fishing or just outside for some
fun in the sun. This summer much of his time will be spent playing with his four year old son
Caleb and two year old daughter Abigail. He can't wait to meet all of you and is looking forward
to an exciting year ahead!
Grade 7 Blue
Mrs. Centi, Team Leader, grew up in New York City and has lived in Mt. Airy for the past twenty-seven
years. She has taught high school and college level English in New York and Maryland, as well as Special
Education. The start of her summer vacation brought much joy as Mrs. Centi became a grandmother for the first
time. Over the summer, Mrs. Centi enjoys relaxing by the pool, reading, going to the beach, and spoiling her
grandson, Derek.
Ms. Osterhouse, Math, is moving back from a year in Savannah, GA, where she taught high school math.
Her summer will be spent in Savannah enjoying the beach and visits from friends and family, and she loves to play
soccer and tennis. She's excited to be back at Mt. Airy, and will be getting married in December to become Mrs.
Hastings!
Mrs. Haddad*, Humanities, is starting her 1st year at Mt. Airy Middle after having taught 9 years at Mt. Airy
Elementary. When not in school, she enjoys reading, shopping, and spending time with her three daughters. Over
the summer she can be found at the beach or traveling up and down the East Coast watching her daughter play
soccer. She is very excited to start this new adventure and to see the familiar faces of former MAE students!
Mrs. Paczynski, Social Studies, is married with two grown children. Alex is in San Francisco working for a
Coding School called Makersquare and Kate is married and a second grade teacher at Crofton Elem. in Anne
Arundel County. She & her husband are military/civilian brats and love to travel. She has been to every US State,
Japan, Australia, and almost every country in Europe. This summer she is off to Hawaii, South Carolina, Florida,
and Tennessee.
Ms. Tori Walls, Science, is a Carroll County native, growing up in Sykesville. Recently graduated, Tori is an
alumni of Shippensburg University with a degree in Mid-Level Education with concentrations in Language Arts and
Science. She can’t wait to join the Mt. Airy Middle staff and meet all her new students!.
Grade 7 Gold
Mrs. Weaver teaches Life Science and is one of the Student Government Association advisors. She
received a B.A. in Biology at the University of Delaware and then her Master of Arts in Teaching from Towson
University. Her favorite part about teaching is giving students the opportunity to design labs and dissect frogs! In her
free time she enjoys cooking, being outside, decorating, painting, and spending time with family and friends.
Mr. Henning teaches Math and is looking forward to his 33rd year of teaching. Mr. Henning is in charge of the
drama club at school and is excited about the Fall production: Dorothy in Wonderland and the Spring musical:
Beauty & the Beast. Mr. Henning's main hobby is music. He conducts a professional handbell ensemble where he
enjoys interpreting the music and lifting the listener's spirit. Now if you are on Team 7 Gold, get your brain ready,
the time will soon be here to bring on the math!
Mr. Kibler teaches Social Studies. He and his wife moved to Carroll County from Buffalo, NY in 2012. He is
an avid fan of hockey, soccer, and lacrosse. He and his wife now have a son, Landon, who was born in
January. He is very excited for the new school year to begin!
Ms. Lewis is our 7 Gold ELA teacher. She is a native Marylander, from Hereford in Baltimore County. In her
spare time, she loves to travel and while she’s traveling, she takes as many pictures as she can! Ms. Lewis also
volunteers as a Young Life leader at Westminster and Winters Mill High Schools. She’s looking forward to meeting
all her new students.
Miss Luipersbeck*, STEM, is starting her 1st year at Mt. Airy Middle after having taught 7th and 8th grade
math for 3 years in Washington County, MD. In her free time she enjoys kayaking, running, and playing
basketball. She hopes to begin coaching girls basketball in the Mt. Airy community. Over the summer she will be
traveling to different beaches across the United States and spending time with her family.

Grade 8 Blue
Ms. Chenoweth, Math/Team Leader, is a graduate of Liberty HS and Towson University, and is entering her
8th year teaching math at Mt. Airy Middle. She loves to travel whenever possible, and has been to several different
countries outside the U.S. She loves spending time at the beach, reading, kayaking, and attending Orioles games.
She is also frequently involved in musical activities, including choral and solo performances at church events.
Mrs. Baker teaches ELA, and graduated in 2011 from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.A. in
Secondary Education and another B.A. in English Language and Literature. This is her 5th year teaching at Mt. Airy
Middle. She is looking forward to spending her summer reading, relaxing by the beach, and spending time with her
new baby, Ava and husband!
Mr. Connor is returning for his second year of teaching 8th grade social studies for the Blue Team.
He has spent his summer touring Civil War battlefields and has acquired many new and exciting
artifacts for his students this year. Mr. Connor has been married for 26 years and is the proud father of
3 active duty U.S. service members and a son who is a sophomore in college. He is very excited to
meet his new students in the fall.
Mr. Payne teaches Science. Prior to MAMS, Mr. Payne taught Earth Science at New Windsor Middle School
for 10 years. He enjoyed his summer traveling with his wife, Elizabeth. He is excited about starting his second year
at Mt. Airy Middle School!
Mrs. True* loves 8th grade and is excited to teach a new class called Humanities this year. Teaching just one
team of 8th grade wasn’t enough, so this year she will see every 8th grader in the building for half a year! Mrs. True
has been at Mt. Airy since 1999, and started her teaching career in Carroll County in 1992. This summer will be busy
for the True family as she and her daughters will be performing in The Glyndon Area Players’ production of The Little
Mermaid, and the whole family will be taking a couple of beach trips as well.
Grade 8 Gold
Mrs. Healy, Team Leader, is excited to begin her 14th year of teaching English Language Arts at Mt.
Airy Middle. She grew up in Prince George’s County, went to Duke University, and worked as a book editor
in New York City before earning her master’s in teaching from McDaniel College. She and her husband live
in Westminster, their daughter is a social worker in Baltimore County, and their son is a recent graduate of
the University of Maryland. In her free time, Mrs. Healy enjoys reading, going to movies, doing yoga,
watching “So You Think You Can Dance” (while wishing that she could), and spending time with her family.
Mrs. Merwitz teaches Science. She has a Bachelor’s in Industrial Design from Auburn University and her Master’s
Degree from Towson University. One of her favorite pastimes is watching SEC football. She also believes the Monday
after the Super Bowl should be a national holiday.
Ms. Brown is a graduate of McDaniel College with her Masters degree in secondary education-Social Studies. She
lives in Westminster with her husband, Michael and 4 year old daughter Beatrix and their two dogs, Roscoe and Bella. In
her spare time, her hobbies include collecting and reading comic books, learning to play the ukulele, going to concerts, and
traveling (especially to historic sites). Some things that Ms. Brown loves are Star Wars, Doctor Who, Marvel comics, horror
movies and science fiction.
Ms. Westbrook teaches Math. She is excited to join the MAM community for the upcoming 2016-2017
school year! This summer she will be relaxing and catching up on a reading list (yes, math teachers read
too!) Later in the summer she will be traveling to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to visit with friends
and enjoy the West Coast. She is looking forward to seeing all of her eager math students in the fall!
Dr. Ken Fischer* is excited to return to the Mt. Airy community to teach 8th grade STEM! He was a paid paramedic/
firefighter for the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company from 2001 to 2009. This will be an exciting summer for him, on June 30
he welcomed his third girl to his family! Baby Fischer joined his other daughters Taylor (5) and Riley (3). When he’s not
busy with his daughters, he will be performing acoustic guitar and singing all around the Northern Virginia and DC/
Baltimore Metro areas.
* All 8th grade students will have both STEM and Humanities, which are semester classes.
Media
Mrs. Lichty is planning to begin the dreaded “ down-sizing” project this summer; she’s only been putting it off for ten
years! She’ll be hitting the road from time to time to visit family and friends and, as always, reading, reading, reading!
Mrs. Potito, Media Clerk, was raised in Fairfax Co., VA and has received degrees from both James Madison
University and McDaniel College. She loves reading and baseball. She is looking forward to another year at MAMS.
Specials
Mrs. Lantz, Team Leader & FACS teacher, just completed her 24th year in CCPS and her 14th year at
MAMS. She loves to travel, a good movie, trying new recipes and caring for her family. She is a graduate of WV
Wesleyan College and McDaniel/graduate studies. Three children have completed their education in CCPS as of
June 2016. Two have graduated from college and the youngest will leave for the Univ. of Alabama in August.
Personal Motto: “Be the best person you can be, every day.”
Mrs. Reed, Team Leader & General Music/Chorus teacher, is from Hagerstown, MD, where she lives with her
husband and two labs, Rocky and Bo. She is looking forward to taking classes at Common Ground on the Hill at
McDaniel College. She will also be busy helping her husband at all of his barbecue competitions around the tristate
area. She hopes to find the time to garden, hit the beach, and sneak in a few good books before heading back to
school.
Mr. Summers is our Instrumental Music teacher. For the 2015/2016 school year, he was selected as one of Carroll
County's Outstanding Educators. He is looking forward to another exciting school year ... but first a relaxing summer. His
family plans to go to Nags Head to visit family. With several gigs on the summer calendar, he will also be playing his
trumpet a lot! He wishes everyone a fantastic summer ... see you in August!
Mr. Weaver, is our Technology Education teacher. He graduated from North Carroll HS in 2004 and University
of Maryland in 2008. In his spare time, he really enjoys being outdoors as well as watching and playing sports. This
summer, Mr. Weaver will spend time working on his family farm. Recently he has taken up a new hobby, he has been
playing Pokémon GO with Mr. Mihalko.
Ms. Stouffer, Health Education, is beginning her 22nd year teaching at CCPS, and 2nd year at Mt. Airy Middle
School. She taught Health and Physical Education at the high school level for 20 years before coming to MAMS. Ms.
Stouffer will be spending 3 weeks at the beach this summer, as well as, enjoying time with her family and cats, Maxwell
and Macy. In her spare time, she enjoys going on cruises, photography and reading.
Ms. Fleming has been teaching physical education at Mt. Airy Middle School for 28 years. She attended Mt. Airy
Middle School and South Carroll HS. She is a graduate of Towson State University where she played volleyball and
then went on to earn her Master’s Degree from McDaniel College. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening and
traveling.
Mr. Mihalko, physical education, is beginning his 13th year teaching for CCPS. Mr. Mihalko grew up in Sykesville,
MD and graduated from Towson University. During the summer, Mr. Mihalko enjoys spending time with his children
and at the beach. He is looking forward to another great year at Mt. Airy Middle. He also started a new hobby, playing
Pokémon GO with Mr. Weaver.
Mrs. Langrall is pumped to be the newest member of the MAM Physical Education Dept. She loves being active and
participating in local road and trail runs. She has even run a couple of Half Marathons (I am only half crazy). She & her
husband have 4 kids who live all over the country - #4kids4states. We will be visiting ALL of them and our 3 Grands this
summer. Virginia, North Carolina, Texas and California here we come!
Ms. Pugh, Spanish, is beginning her 11th year at Mt. Airy Middle. Ms. Pugh grew up near Philadelphia, graduated
from Shippensburg University with a BA in Spanish, and later earned a Master’s degree from McDaniel. Ms. Pugh
enjoys sewing and baseball. Ms. Pugh will become Mrs. K. in December.
Miss Carmack is our new Art teacher. This summer she is excited to take art classes at McDaniel College
through Common Ground on the Hill. She also plans on vacationing in South Carolina, where she will hopefully do
some surf fishing. The rest of her summer time will be spent in her garden and working on a ton of art projects. She’s
looking forward to joining the MAMS team!
Resource & Support
Mrs. Apellaniz is our 8th grade resource teacher and has been at Mt. Airy Middle for 20 years. She is originally from
New Jersey and graduated from Georgian Court College, which is now Georgian Court University. During her
summer break, she enjoys reading and spending time at the beach with her husband and two boys. This summer
she is looking forward to a relaxing on the beach at the Jersey Shore.
Mrs. Trout is our 7th grade resource teacher. She has been teaching for 18 years. She is married and has three
children, one in 8th grade and two in high school. She is looking forward to another great year at Mt. Airy Middle!
Mrs. Schaeffer is in her 16th year of teaching special education in Carroll County. She has also spent time
teaching English in Africa. She graduated from Frostburg State University and McDaniel College. She’s married with
six kids, two boys and four girls. They enjoy road trips, hiking, and camping together.
Mrs. Taddei is our Speech/Language Pathologist. She is a Pennsylvania native and a Bloomsburg University
alumnus. She is the mother of three former MAMS students., who are now all at Towson University. In her spare
time, she enjoys reading, biking, hiking, painting, and running.
Mrs. Lambert, our Reading Specialist, is beginning her 42nd year as a teacher and her 37th year at Mt. Airy
Middle School. During the summer, when not in Maryland playing with her one year old grandson, she can be found
in Bethany Beach, DE. She spends most of the summer on the shore enjoying stand up paddle boarding, biking,
and sitting on the beach reading. Oh, and building jigsaw puzzles with her husband! Her beach home and
classroom are both decorated with many of the framed puzzles they have put together over the years. She looks
forward to the new school year and thinks it will be her best school year ever!
Mrs. Bevans, LFI, has been working as a special education teacher in Carroll County Public Schools for 11
years. This summer, she will enjoy spending time with her husband and 2 daughters. They will have many
adventures throughout the summer break. She looks forward to starting another great year at MAMS.
Mrs. Bowser, GT Specialist, has been teaching in Carroll County Schools for 25 years including 23 years as a
math teacher at New Windsor Middle and 2 years as a GT Specialist at New Windsor Middle and Northwest Middle.
The highlight of my summer will be going on a two week mission trip to Puerto Rico with my husband and 2 college
age daughters. I am excited about becoming a part of the Mt. Airy Middle staff in the fall!
Mrs. Aponte-Rivera is an Instructional Assistant. She is looking forward to a wonderful time on vacation in Puerto
Rico with her husband and granddaughter. She loves car races, reading good books, and most of all, spending time
with her six grandchildren. She is looking forward to the start of a wonderful school year!
Mrs. Obremski, Instructional Assistant, has been a member of the Mt. Airy community for 15 years. She &
her husband Chris have been married for 27 years. They have two sons; Stephen is 23 and Jason is 9. She is an
avid reader and loves to scrapbook! This summer she is looking forward to a relaxing vacation in Ocean City,
spending time exploring New York City, and spending time with family and friends.
Mrs. Strayton, Instructional Assistant, graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College and has a Masters
Degree in Clinical Social Work from Widener University. She has two wonderful kids. Adam is almost 20, attends
Elizabethtown College, studying Engineering and Business. Laura is 17, will be a senior and is beginning her college
search. She loves to travel and is looking forward to visiting countries along the Danube River this summer!
Mrs. Plummer, Instructional Assistant, is from Dayton, Ohio. She is married to David. Her 3 kids have gone
through MAMS. Brian has graduated from South Carroll and will attend the University of Maryland to play
football. Michael is a senior and Megan is a freshman at South Carroll.
Mrs. Sipes, our permanent substitute, attended Mt. Airy Middle as did her two children. She taught Special
Education at Mt. Airy Middle for eight years before staying home to raise her children. She has been our permanent
substitute since 2002. She works backstage with the Mt. Airy Middle drama club, working on costumes and props.
She’s active in her church and community and enjoys scrapbooking, reading, camping, kayaking, biking and
spending time with friends and family.
Counseling Office
Mr. Canfield, school counselor, loves working at Mt. Airy Middle. He has served Carroll County Public
Schools in a myriad of helper roles which include middle school counselor, high school counselor, pupil personnel
worker and crisis intervention specialist. He holds a M.A. in Management from Webster University and a M.Ed. in
Guidance and Counseling from the University of West Georgia. He is a retired United States Air Force Senior
Master Sergeant. During the summer, you’ll find him pedaling slowly on the Western Maryland Rail Trail. In the fall,
he is all about the Ravens. He looks forward to another great year in helping students with their social, emotional,
academic and career counseling needs at Mt. Airy Middle School.
Ms. Novalis, school counselor, is excited to begin her fourth year at Mt. Airy Middle. She holds a Master’s
Degree from McDaniel College. Prior to being a school counselor at MAM, Ms. Novalis worked as a Community
Learning Center coordinator and as an instructional assistant while she finished her degree, making for a total of 9
years working for CCPS. She was also a counselor and program director for River Valley Ranch, a summer camp in
Manchester. Ms. Novalis enjoys performing music in the community (and at school whenever possible). She also
likes to smile…a lot.
Mrs. Mason, Registrar, has worked at Mt. Airy Middle for 17 years. She enjoys singing and reading. This
summer she will be traveling up and down the east coast visiting her 15 nieces.
Administrative Team
Mr. Streaker, Principal, is beginning his 7th year at Mt. Airy Middle. He is a graduate of South Carroll HS,
Frostburg State University and Hood College. Mr. Streaker and his wife, Nicole, a kindergarten teacher, spend the
majority of their “spare time” with their two children, William and Hannah. He is an avid fan of local sports including
the Ravens, Orioles, and Terps. This summer, he & his wife will be celebrating their 20th anniversary. They are
taking a family trip to San Diego to visit family and catch an Orioles game in Petco Park. Mr. Streaker will also be
volunteering with Camp Hope to work on home improvement projects for people in need in Western Maryland and
enjoying day trips to Hershey Park, Washington, DC, and Baltimore.
Mr. Bowers, Assistant Principal, is beginning his 6th year at Mt. Airy Middle. Prior to joining the Mt. Airy Middle
faculty, he taught physical education and health at The Calvert School then began his administrative career in Carroll
County. Mr. Bowers has three granddaughters, two grandsons and another one on the way! He will be going to
Disneyworld with his family in the fall.
Mrs. Trumpler is in her 20th year working as a CCPS nurse, all at Mt. Airy Middle. She enjoys gardening,
reading and going to Ocean City whenever she can. She’s been married for 36 years and has two grown daughters
that are teachers in Baltimore County and Baltimore City. She enjoys spending time with her granddaughter Addy
whenever she can.
Mrs. Hynes, Office Manager, is beginning her 20th year at Mt. Airy Middle. She is married and has four married
sons and new “daughters”, five adorable grandchildren . She is looking forward to another exciting year at Mt. Airy
Middle School.
Mrs. Lerch, Secretary, is starting her 10th year at Mt. Airy Middle and continues to enjoy every moment of
it. Her significant other, Mark, who has been a wonderful addition, is still a big part of her life. Their summer vacation
will be spent in Florida visiting with his mom and landscaping her home and working on her honey do lists. When
she can, she will spend the remaining time relaxing with family and friends and caring for her Mom.
Mrs. Phillips, Secretary, is beginning her 5th year at Mt. Airy Middle. Originally from Long Island, Mrs.
Phillips is married with two grown sons and a mini-schnauzer named Zoe. This summer, she will be visiting family in
New York and will take her annual family vacation to New Hampshire. Mrs. Phillips likes to torment her co-workers
by wearing her NY Yankees & NY Giants shirts during the school year!

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
CCPS has established new guidelines for the use of Portable Electronic Devices. You may view these

Mt. Airy Middle staff look forward to utilizing the increasing availability of technology to enhance
instruction. In addition to CCPS guidelines, below you will find Mt. Airy Middle’s procedures for use
of portable electronic devices:







At all times, students must be given approval from staff in order to use portable electronic devices in
all locations on the campus of Mt. Airy Middle.
The audible notification of portable electronic devices must be turned off during the school day to
reduce disruption.
Portable electronic devices should be placed out of view unless students have approval from staff to
use their device.
Portable electronic devices may not be used in bathrooms or locker rooms.
When approved for use by staff, ear buds may only be used in one ear to ensure that students can
hear direction from staff in the event of an emergency.
Students are not permitted to initiate or receive communication using their device without receiving
prior approval from staff.
In the event a student’s use or possession of an electronic device becomes a disruption to the school,
the student may lose the privilege to possess an electronic device.
Continued violations will be considered insubordination and subject to disciplinary action.

EMERGENCY CARDS
On the first day of school each student will receive only
one (1) copy of his/her emergency card. It is critical
the preprinted information is carefully reviewed
by a parent/guardian. If the card reflects incorrect
information you are asked to make note of the
revisions on the card. All emergency cards must
be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to
the school, within three (3) school days. Thank
you, in advance, for your prompt attention to this
procedure.

This resource is provided to all students courtesy of the
PTO. The first few pages contain school information
for you to review.
STUDENT TRANSPORTATION
In an effort to make the transportation of your child as safe as possible, listed below you will find rules regarding
student transportation.
Authorized Bus Passengers: Students may not ride buses other than the one that regularly transports them
to school. Students are allowed one am and one pm stop. Exceptions to this policy will be granted only on an
emergency basis by the school administration.
School Bus Vandalism: A student who damages a school bus in any manner is to be denied the privilege of riding
the bus unless repairs have been paid. Riding privileges may be restored to the student after payment has been
made or may be withheld by the principal or assistant principal for an indefinite period.
Transporting Musical Instruments and Projects: Only those musical instruments or projects that can be held on
the lap of students along with the school textbooks may be brought on the bus. Larger instruments or projects that
create a safety hazard and occupy a lot of space shall not be permitted on the school bus.
Bus Referrals: Parents will be notified if a student receives a bus referral. Inappropriate behavior may
result in loss of bus riding privileges.
School Bus Regulations:
 Be at the bus 5 minutes before pick-up time.
 Take your seat promptly and remain seated for your ride to/from school.
 Sit in the seat facing front; keep your feet, books and other articles out of the aisle.
 Always keep your hands and head inside the bus.
 Report any damage that you see to the driver.
 Eating, smoking or using profanity or vulgar language is not permitted.
 Conduct should be quiet and orderly so the driver is not distracted from the important job of driving. Listen to
the driver’s instructions.
 Wait until the bus has come to a stop before leaving your seat.
Cross 10 feet in front of the bus with the warning lights only upon discharge and if you live on the opposite side of
the road. Be sure you check traffic both ways.
Bus routes are expected to be available at www.carrollk12.org in early August. Routes
are scheduled to be published in the Carroll County Times “back-to-school” issue in
mid-August. Students should arrive at their bus stop at least 10 minutes prior to the
listed pick up time for the first week of school.
BOOK BAGS
Students may use book bags to transport books to
and from school; however, students must leave
their book bags in their lockers during the
school day. This is for the safety of all students
and staff. Students will be given sufficient
opportunities to visit their locker throughout the
day so that they will not need to carry all of their
books. These locker visit times will be determined
by each individual team. Students can carry gym
bags or small plastic bags for their gym clothes.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
UNIFORM
All students must either wear a Physical Education
uniform (t-shirt and gym shorts) or bring dark shorts
and a light colored shirt during Physical Education.
Students will have an opportunity to purchase a
MAMS Physical Education uniform through our
Physical Education Department during the first
week of school. The cost will be $7.00 for the shirt,
$10.00 for the shorts.
DRESSED TO LEARN
In general, all students are doing a great job following the guidelines for the county dress code. However,
at times, they need to be reminded of the following:
Skirts and shorts should not be excessively short.
Shirts must cover the midriff area and meet the top of the lower attire at all times.
Shirts/tops should not reveal cleavage.
No mutilated, cutout or ragged clothing shall be worn.
Pants shall cover undergarments at all times and not be so long that they drag on the floor.

Blackboard Connect becomes SchoolMessenger
Throughout the year, parents receive e-mail and phone messages from our Blackboard Connect
notification system. During the summer, Blackboard Connect will be transitioning to SchoolMessenger.
Parents will notice little or no change in their service. As with Blackboard Connect, phone numbers and
e-mail addresses are taken from the emergency contact information provided by parents at the beginning
of the school year. We are excited about the new capabilities SchoolMessenger will offer and believe it
will greatly enhance our communication with parents and our school communities.
VOLUNTEERS - Carroll County Public Schools 2016-2017
Making a Difference Together
Volunteering is an excellent way for parents and family, community members, and business partners to build and
strengthen ties with the Carroll County Public School System. Volunteers offer their time, effort, and/or talents to
benefit all students in the school system.
CCPS Volunteer Program Guidelines outline consistent standards for volunteers. Level I Volunteers (guest readers,
concession stand operators, business representatives, event ticket collectors, guest speakers, etc.) must annually
register at a school by completing a Volunteer Information Form. Level II Volunteers (classroom helpers, tutors,
chaperones, mentors, etc.) are required to attend an annual training session at least seven (7) school days prior
to volunteering. School days are defined as days when schools are open for students.
Volunteer training sessions are held at schools and regional locations throughout the school year. Volunteer
training, obtained during the 2015-2016 school year, is only valid through September 30, 2016. As plans for the
2016-2017 school year are developed, volunteer training may be included as part of a scheduled school event or
planned as a separate activity. Carefully scan school newsletters and bulletins for scheduled volunteer training
dates and locations. Attending required annual volunteer training prior to October 1, 2016 will maintain your
eligibility to volunteer and alleviate gaps in your volunteer service.
***Please remember, anyone planning on volunteering during the 2016-2017 school year must provide valid
photo identification at the conclusion of the volunteer training session. Exceptions regarding this requirement
will not be granted.

(www.carrollk12.org), Channel 21, and local newspapers. Additional information may also be obtained by

Integrated Pest
Management Program
The integrated Pest Management (IPM) program
employed by Carroll County Public Schools uses
inspection, monitoring, employee education, and
sanitation practices to minimize the use of pesticides in
our schools.
Maryland law requires that parents of all elementary
students be notified automatically prior to application of
any pesticide. Parents of secondary students must
request to be placed on a pesticide notification list.
Carroll County Public Schools notifies all students and
staff 24 hours prior to scheduled applications of
pesticides on school property. If an emergency pest
control situation arises and a pesticide is used,
notification will be made within 24 hours. Space
spraying of a pesticide throughout an entire room or
area by a fogger or aerosol device requires one week
advance notice to all students and staff.
Copies of material safety data sheets (MSDS) and
product labels for each pesticide and bait station used
on school property are maintained in the Department of
Plant Operations. Persons wishing to review this
information should contact Mr. John Timcheck at

Student Accident Insurance
This year, CCPS will be sending an email home
to each parent, explaining Student Accident
Insurance. The application is to be submitted
online at www.studentinsurance-kk.com. If you
need more information, please contact the school

CONSENT AND RELEASE
Permission to Photograph,
Videotape or Audiotape
Throughout the school year, the Carroll County Public
School System frequently covers school activities and
may use your child’s photograph, video image, or voice
for educational, informational, or public relations
purposes, with or without identification by name.
If you do not wish to have your child’s voice
reproduced on tape or to have his/her image
appear in such things as a video, a photograph, or
the school website, please notify the school
principal in writing. It is assumed that parents and
guardians consent to their children being audiotaped,
photographed, videotaped, or having their image
placed on a school website by the school system
unless such notification is received.
There are also occasions when the media cover certain
school events (such as when a government leader
visits a school). If you do not wish to have your child’s
name or likeness published by the media, you should
address your concerns directly to the school involved
so that the media is so advised. Please be advised
that the school system has no control over the media
when they are covering activities such as sporting
events and musical programs that are open to the
public.

21157. Management plans are required by the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and depict
the location, amount, condition, and response action
projected for any asbestos-containing materials, if
any are located in the school building.
The Carroll County Public School System recognizes
that it may not claim ownership rights, property rights,
or the copyright to student work. However, there may
be times throughout the year when the school system
wishes to display student work on school websites or in
publications. If you do not wish to have your child’s art,
poetry, writing, etc. appear on school websites or in
publications, please notify the school principal in
writing. It is assumed that parents and guardians
consent to their child’s work being displayed on school
websites or in publications unless such notification is
received.
POLICY STATEMENT ON PLACEMENT,
PROMOTION, INTERVENTION,
AND RETENTION:
The Board of Education endorses and encourages the belief that all students can learn, progress, and
achieve when individual differences are recognized and addressed through effective instruction and
intervention. It is the policy of the Board of Education of Carroll County that decisions regarding the
placement, promotion, retention, and acceleration of students shall be based on multiple factors related
to the degree of success the individual student has achieved in completing the assigned curriculum. The
final responsibility for decisions on placement, promotion, intervention, retention, and acceleration of a
student rests with the principal. The decision-making process shall include parents/guardians, CCPS
staff, and students when appropriate. Grades Six, Seven, and Eight: To be promoted to the next grade,
students must pass all core academic subjects (mathematics, reading/language arts, science, and social
studies) A student who fails any of the core subjects for the year shall be considered for retention. A
student who successfully participates in appropriate interventions, such as extra assistance, a pull-out
program, extended day programs, etc., to address the subject-area deficiencies, shall be promoted.

Immunization Requirements
Who:
Current 6th Grade Students will need the new immunizations prior to entering
7th Grade (2016 – 2017 School Year)

MCV4 (Meningococcal Vaccine)
Tdap (Tetanus, Diphther ia, Per tussis [Whooping Cough])

Health care provider note with proof of appointment that falls within 20
calendar days of the first day of school, August 29, 2016.
(Specifically an appointment on or before September 17, 2016)
What we need from you:
After students have received the required immunizations, please provide documentation to the school nurse. We
will need documentation from your health care provider or completed immunization form. This can be faxed,
scanned, emailed, dropped off by parent, or delivered by student. The information needs to be submitted to the
school nurse.
Any student not in compliance by August 29, 2016 will be excluded from
school. Students may return to school when documentation of the required
immunizations is provided to the school nurse.

Please be sure to join us every day for a delicious, healthy breakfast and lunch. We have been busy making your
school cafeteria hi-tech and better than ever. Here are some things that we think you need to know to enhance
your cafeteria experience.

Did you know that your child has a cafeteria account? Every student who goes through our cafeteria line will
use a unique, Personal Identification Number (PIN) to access their account. Parents have the option to add
any denomination to the account for the purchase of meals and snack items. It is a convenient way to ensure
that money is not lost or forgotten during the hectic morning rush!

Ok, so what is the PIN? Each student has been issued a unique, 5 digit Pin number. Please help them remember this number! It makes the line move faster and ensures that everyone has plenty of time to enjoy
their meal. If they do happen to forget the number, the cashier will be able to find it for them.

How do I put money on the account? It’s easy!


Visit www.myschoolbucks.com to add any value to the account with a credit card. (There is a small
service provider fee for the transaction.) You’ll need your child’s PIN number to complete the simple
registration process. Please note: online payments take 24 hours to process before your child can
access the money
You can still send in a check to your school’s cafeteria. The cafeteria manager will add it to the account.

The money added to the account can be used to purchase meals AND snack items.

And of course…we will still accept cash! Cash transactions will also require your student to enter their
PIN number.

Can I monitor what my child is purchasing? Sure! Visit www.myschoolbucks.com and set up a FREE account. Once you complete the simple registration process (you’ll need your child’s PIN to get started) you can
set up low balance alerts and monitor what they are purchasing.

You can forget about use it or lose it! Any money that is left in your child’s account will carry over from year to
year.
