Here it comes, the “tip-off” of the 2013
Mammoth Lakes Music Festival!
Our opening night gala features a “Dream Team” of performers for a musical slam dunk with Beethoven’s Violin Sonata opus 30/1,
Schumann’s String Quartet no. 1 and Dvořák’s high-octane Piano Quartet opus 87.
With Friday night’s concert, the MLMF moves into the new college tent venue which allows us to share a big stage with the fine young
musicians of the Sierra Academy of Music (SAM). Alongside our festival artists, these highly accomplished young players between the ages
of 14 -24 will perform in a string orchestra under the expert leadership of Corey Cerovsek, the soloist in Joseph Haydn’s lovely Violin
Concerto in G Major. The Overture to Humperdinck’s fairytale opera Hansel and Gretel and the teenage Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No.
9 will leave you utterly “Enchanted”.
“Con Pasión” kicks off week two with a string quartet by the great Tango master Astor Piazzolla which is flanked by works of Frédéric
Chopin and Reynaldo Hahn. Born in Poland and Venezuela respectively, these two great Romantics found their permanent home in Paris,
the City of Love.
Wednesday’s “Americana” mixes Puritan Boston with Wild West nostalgia for an entertaining program culminating with a “Best of
Gershwin” String Quartet you just cannot miss…
Take the “Cello Submarine” and immerse yourself in music by Beethoven, the liberator of this great
instrument. In true festival spirit, three cello musketeers, Cara, Emilio and Brian will surprise you with
never-before-heard cello repertoire; and Mendelssohn’s String Quintet opus 87 ain’t too bad, either!

“Tradition!” features viola star Nokuthula Ngwenyama in J.S. Bach’s fabulous Brandenburg Concerto No. 6. The final piece on the program
is Robert Schumann’s greatest hit, the #1 Piano Quintet in the history of music!
With “Ciao Tutti” we’ll say good-bye until next year, letting Archangelo Corelli, Ottorino
Respighi, Giuseppe Verdi and Max Bruch do all the talking…

Festival Academy & Workshops
Concurrent with the festival, CMU offers the
Sierra Academy of Music (SAM) for instrumentalists ages 16-24, SAM ‘Tween for students ages
12-16, SAM Jr. for developing players ages 8-12,
and the Sierra Chamber Ensemble Workshop
(SCEW) for adult chamber music enthusiasts.
Our faculty consists of the exceptional performers featured in the festival concerts.
