2015 SUPER SUMMER SPECTACULAR
Ready or not, summer is nearly here, which for most
parents mean finding activities to keep the kids busy.
In this issue of Library Connect you will find two months
filled with fun and educational programs for children and
teens happening nearly every day of the week. The
Summer Reading Challenge can fill in the gaps of
unscheduled time with great books and prizes to keep
everyone reading through the summer. Did you know
reading to your child or listening to audiobooks can be
included on the children, teen and adult reading logs?
And if you’re stumped about finding a book that will
keep your child entertained, Irving Public Library’s
children and teen staff have great suggestions and
reading lists you can take home.
If you’re an educator, summertime is probably filled with
taking classes, teaching summer school, and completing
projects. The Irving Public Library is here to support you
with these endeavors. We provide a place to recharge
and renew with plenty of books, eBooks, movies,
audiobooks, and adult programs including the new
science fiction & fantasy book club, Unicorns in Space,
and the Irving Writer’s Salon.
Please pass along this publication to students, families
and fellow teachers. Back issues can be found in the
Library News section of our website, which also has a
subscription link. The next issue will be our back-toschool edition with news about this year’s Community
Read event.
Have a great summer!
At the Irving Public Library, there is never a dull moment and summer is no
exception. Are you ready for some high-octane fun or want to experience the
kind of adventure you can only find a in a good book? Then you will want to
take part in our Summer Reading Challenge. Adults tend to think that SRC is
only for kids, but there is also a program for adults, complete with book clubs,
fun adult events and prizes. You can still grab the kids and visit your
neighborhood library for free, weekly top-notch performances and special
author visits. You won’t be disappointed.
Children’s Summer Reading Challenge
During the library’s Summer Reading
Challenge (SRC): Every Hero Has a Story,
the library will be filled with caped
crusading librarians, fantastic reads and
powerful performers. Parents will be glad
to know that SRC’s purpose is to excite
Irving’s youth about learning and improve
their reading skills. It may seem like three
short months, but summer is when
children are most susceptible to learning
loss. The Summer Reading Challenge helps
students stay on course academically
while developing a lifelong love of books.
SRC’s idea is simple: read books, attend
cool programs and earn prizes. Here are
some key facts:
 Start reading June 1. Logs have been
handed out to most students in Irving in
May, and will be available at all library
locations from June 1 through Aug. 15.
 Read 20 minutes each day for seven
days per prize level, up to 5 levels
 Beginning June 7, return completed logs

to receive awards, such as certificates,
superhero bracelets, books, a make-yourown comic kit and a superhero medal for
finishing the challenge. Prizes are available Teen Summer Reading Challenge:

Stories come to life at the Irving Public Library this summer when teens meet visiting Young Adult (YA) authors and discover new
books. Unmask Teen Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) is a great time to meet bestselling and up-and-coming writers at several fun
parties and panels planned in June and July. These are not your average book signing events! Teens can sit with and talk to
nationally known, published authors and bond over crafts, games and refreshments. All YA author events are highlighted in the
Teen Events Calendar. SRC teen author events are listed below by location.
South Irving Library
Want a chance to win an iPod shuffle and iTunes gift cards at a
scavenger hunt celebrating the works of an author who is no
stranger to the Irving Public Library on June 16? Check the Big
Events calendar to ”unmask” his or her identity! Strong
heroines who write their own destinies will be the theme when
YA writers Jennifer Armentrout (Lux series), Jenny Martin
(Tracked), Mary Pearson (the Remnant Chronicles), Meredith
Moore (I am Her Revenge) and Becky Wallace (The
Storyspinner) arrive for the Unmasked author party and panel
July 16.
Valley Ranch Library
Author Varsha Bajaj brings her deliciously fun story Abby
Spencer Goes to Bollywood to fans on June 18 for an afternoon
teen party and evening book discussion and signing. The
dynamic duo of Rachel Caine (Morganville Vampires) and
Shanna Swendson (Enchanted Inc.) will be the celebrated
guests at an evening book launch party on July 23 for their
latest works Ink and Bone and Rebel Mechanics, respectively.
An end of SRC author party and book signing featuring Laini
Taylor (Daughter of Smoke and Bones series) rounds out the
month on July 30.
West Irving Library
Superheroes and the supernatural are celebrated at West
Irving Library this summer starting June 11 with the Behind the
Hero Author afternoon party and evening panel. Authors
Jeramey Kraatz (The Cloak Society series), Lee Bacon (Joshua
Dread series), Katherine Catmull (Summer and Bird), and Kelsey
Macke (Damsel Distressed) will discuss hot topics, heroic
characters, overcoming obstacles and teens remaining true to
themselves.
Afternoon author parties are exclusively for teens. What if
you’re an adult who loves YA? Authors will often make a
second appearance at an evening author panel open to adults
and teens. Along with book sales and autographs, expect deep
moments, plenty of laughter, decadent desserts, fanciful
decorations and photo ops during our author panels. To see
which YA author visits are open to adults year-round, check out
our Adult Events calendar.

Valley Ranch Library
The college application process is highly competitive. A unique essay that reflects the personality, values and experiences of
the applicant gives college admission counselors an opportunity to see a part of the student that test scores and transcripts
cannot. The workshop will help students identify their story, and formulate it into a circle story, instead of the typical linear
style, making it fun for the student to write, and something that stands out when read. Space is limited and registration
strongly advised. Pre-registered applicants will be seated first, and then the remaining seats will be filled on a first come, first
served basis. Open for TEENS, 16 and older.
