In this issue of Library Connect you will find two months filled with fun and educational programs for children and teens happening nearly every day of the week. The Summer Reading Challenge can fill in the gaps of unscheduled time with great books and prizes to keep everyone reading through the summer. Did you know reading to your child or listening to audiobooks can be included on the children, teen and adult reading logs? And if you’re stumped about finding a book that will keep your child entertained, Irving Public Library’s children and teen staff have great suggestions and reading lists you can take home. If you’re an educator, summertime is probably filled with taking classes, teaching summer school, and completing projects. The Irving Public Library is here to support you with these endeavors. We provide a place to recharge and renew with plenty of books, eBooks, movies, audiobooks, and adult programs including the new science fiction & fantasy book club, Unicorns in Space, and the Irving Writer’s Salon. The next issue will be our back-toschool edition with news about this year’s Community Read event. Have a great summer! At the Irving Public Library, there is never a dull moment and summer is no exception. Are you ready for some high-octane fun or want to experience the kind of adventure you can only find a in a good book? Then you will want to take part in our Summer Reading Challenge. Adults tend to think that SRC is only for kids, but there is also a program for adults, complete with book clubs, fun adult events and prizes. You can still grab the kids and visit your neighborhood library for free, weekly top-notch performances and special author visits. You won’t be disappointed. Children’s Summer Reading Challenge During the library’s Summer Reading Challenge (SRC): Every Hero Has a Story, the library will be filled with caped crusading librarians, fantastic reads and powerful performers. Parents will be glad to know that SRC’s purpose is to excite Irving’s youth about learning and improve their reading skills. It may seem like three short months, but summer is when children are most susceptible to learning loss. The Summer Reading Challenge helps students stay on course academically while developing a lifelong love of books. SRC’s idea is simple: read books, attend cool programs and earn prizes. Here are some key facts: Start reading June 1. Logs have been handed out to most students in Irving in May, and will be available at all library locations from June 1 through Aug. 15. Read 20 minutes each day for seven days per prize level, up to 5 levels Beginning June 7, return completed logs 2 to receive awards, such as certificates, superhero bracelets, books, a make-yourown comic kit and a superhero medal for finishing the challenge. Prizes are available Teen Summer Reading Challenge: while supplies last. Unmask This summer, teens will be challenged to Children will uncover their own super Unmask and find themselves in a book or talents, hear about larger-than-life at fun library events. In addition to all the legends, meet new friends and experience great benefits that come with reading boundless fun at weekly events hosted at over the summer, teens can earn free each Irving library. One lucky student will win a refreshments at the South Irving Library drawing for an iPad mini. Reading logs and continues until July 31. Are you a gamer Saturdays at South Irving Library, or a girly girl at heart? There are gaming 601 Schulze Drive marathons and crafting events just for you! Want to step into the world of your favorite Young Adult authors? The library will be hosting a total of 10 exclusive The Summer Reading Challenge is author events for teens, featuring at least sponsored by the Irving Public Library 13 Young Adult novelists, possibly more! and Friends of the Irving Public Library. Stories come to life at the Irving Public Library this summer when teens meet visiting Young Adult (YA) authors and discover new books. Unmask Teen Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) is a great time to meet bestselling and up-and-coming writers at several fun parties and panels planned in June and July. These are not your average book signing events! Teens can sit with and talk to nationally known, published authors and bond over crafts, games and refreshments. All YA author events are highlighted in the Teen Events Calendar. SRC teen author events are listed below by location. South Irving Library Want a chance to win an iPod shuffle and iTunes gift cards at a scavenger hunt celebrating the works of an author who is no stranger to the Irving Public Library on June 16? Check the Big Events calendar to ”unmask” his or her identity! Strong heroines who write their own destinies will be the theme when YA writers Jennifer Armentrout (Lux series), Jenny Martin (Tracked), Mary Pearson (the Remnant Chronicles), Meredith Moore (I am Her Revenge) and Becky Wallace (The Storyspinner) arrive for the Unmasked author party and panel July 16. Valley Ranch Library Author Varsha Bajaj brings her deliciously fun story Abby Spencer Goes to Bollywood to fans on June 18 for an afternoon teen party and evening book discussion and signing. The dynamic duo of Rachel Caine (Morganville Vampires) and Shanna Swendson (Enchanted Inc.) will be the celebrated guests at an evening book launch party on July 23 for their latest works Ink and Bone and Rebel Mechanics, respectively. An end of SRC author party and book signing featuring Laini Taylor (Daughter of Smoke and Bones series) rounds out the month on July 30. West Irving Library Superheroes and the supernatural are celebrated at West Irving Library this summer starting June 11 with the Behind the Hero Author afternoon party and evening panel. Authors Jeramey Kraatz (The Cloak Society series), Lee Bacon (Joshua Dread series), Katherine Catmull (Summer and Bird), and Kelsey Macke (Damsel Distressed) will discuss hot topics, heroic characters, overcoming obstacles and teens remaining true to themselves. Afternoon author parties are exclusively for teens. What if you’re an adult who loves YA? Authors will often make a second appearance at an evening author panel open to adults and teens. Along with book sales and autographs, expect deep moments, plenty of laughter, decadent desserts, fanciful decorations and photo ops during our author panels. To see which YA author visits are open to adults year-round, check out our Adult Events calendar. 3 Irving Public Library’s Stepping Stones to 5 monthly program will get children up to age 5 reading, writing, talking, singing and playing as they prepare for their first day of school. Goals of the series are to support school readiness, foster a love of books and reading, and provide parents with practical learning activities with their children. Attend one or all of these events at the South Irving Library, 601 Schulze Drive: Dallas Puppet Theater, 10:30 a.m. June 27. The series kicksoff with a special presentation by the Dallas Puppet Theater of the classic story The Tortoise and the Hare followed by an opportunity to meet small live animals. Gardening for Kids, 10:30 a.m. Aug. 29. Learn how to plant seeds in containers and make crafts at this event led by the Texas Discovery Gardens. Yogees Yoga 4 Kids, 10:30 a.m. Sept. 26. Stephanie Spett introduces the practice and health benefits of yoga for children through stretching, stories, games and music. Yoga mats will be provided. Chinese Story Time, 10:30 a.m. July 25. Children will learn basic Mandarin Chinese phrases at this fun and interactive storytime by Linda Li, founder of Park Cities Chinese School. Crafts and activities follow the program. The event is presented in English. Fall Fun for Families, 10:30 a.m. Oct. 24. The Irving Arts Center will lead children in hands-on art projects, crafts, activities and group stories. Follow up each visit with a trip to the South Irving Library’s Discovery Zone. Children can reinforce reading concepts at literacy kiosks, develop spatial skills at the Lego table, learn cause and effect by stomping on lava floor tiles, and play educational games on touch screen TV’s! Writing a Winning College Essay Workshop June 13, 4 to 6 p.m. July 11, 4 to 6 p.m. Valley Ranch Library The college application process is highly competitive. A unique essay that reflects the personality, values and experiences of the applicant gives college admission counselors an opportunity to see a part of the student that test scores and transcripts cannot. The workshop will help students identify their story, and formulate it into a circle story, instead of the typical linear style, making it fun for the student to write, and something that stands out when read. Space is limited and registration strongly advised. Pre-registered applicants will be seated first, and then the remaining seats will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
