• Cross field and “High and Away” Passes
• Transition in to 3v2 UMASS Drill‐ Offense
• Must stay in front of the goal and not take a shot running away from the goal
• Get the ball to the middle of the field first
• Draw a defender then look to pass
– No one picks you up, step in and shoot

Groundball anywhere on the field
Attack and Defense starts flat
Competition: 1 point for a goal, clear and riding
If a goalie makes a save or defense gains possession, they must clear the ball through the midfield line
– Goalie needs to stay involved with the clear
• 8 seconds to score from the time the groundball is picked up
– After 5 seconds if a goal is not scored, the coach sends a defensive player to make it a 4v4

– Communication: – Coaches decision depending on the goalies capabilities

– Groundballs: If you are not shooting the ball, you must pass it to the open man

• Do not get caught catching the ball at GLE
– He does not have to throw it to X every time
• Player at X must be a threat and attack opposite
– Only attack ball side if it will result in a shot

• Groundball‐ Anywhere on the field
• Defense needs to be able to play all spots on the field
• Skipping the ball must be to a shot!
• Turnover or save, the ball must be cleared to the midfield line
• Box to a Diamond
– Box when ball is above GLE
– Diamond when the ball goes to X
• Point man
– Directing the midfielder where to go
• No sliding up field‐ Force the outside shot
• Defenseman are not going behind the goal but meeting the attackmen at GLE
• Bottom two defenders communicate what they are doing
– Who has the wing and who has X(either side)

• Great for practicing clearing
• Goalie must talk to defenders after the ball is cleared
• Work on uneven to even situations
– 3v2 after the ball is cleared to a 3v3 if defender gets back in time
– 4 v 3 if a coach sends in a fourth offensive player
• Riding is an attitude
– Ride hard and turn the defenders

– Getting the defenseman in to the crease forming an “I”
• Coach shoots on the goalie to begin the clear
• Defense clears the ball to the midfield line then drops the ball
• Offensive player riding the defenseman who cleared the ball picks up the groundball and passes to an open man up field.
