Bracketing Images - Examples Exposure – Images produced using exposure bracketing are often combined in post processing to create a high dynamic range image that exposes different portions of the image by different amounts. Easy way change the EV to say +2, 0, -2. Or change shutter speed or Aperture. Some cameras have auto bracketing. Flash – The amount of light provided by the flash is varied in a bracketed series in order to find the most pleasing combination of ambient light and fill flash. Also just try flash on and flash off places2010_3.5min.exe © 2013 David Smith www.imagebyinterface.com Focal Length - zoom and wide angle Orientation – vertical and horizontal White Balance – Mostly during post processing of RAW images 1 Creative Travel Photography for Cruisers Slower Shutter Speed for Dramatic Effect Exposure Value Button Example Settings +2 EV +1 EV 0 EV -1 EV -2 EV 1/325 sec f 5.0 1/25 sec f 20 •the EV button allows you to quickly underexpose (darken) or overexpose (brighten) your image •To override bad camera decisions caused my camera errors and limitations Managing Camera Exposure Automatic EV= -2.0 Exposure Value = +2 Flash forced on EV = -2.0 © 2013 David Smith www.imagebyinterface.com 2 Creative Travel Photography for Cruisers EV = +1 Creative Control Over Depth of Field Wider depth of field Foreground and background in focus •Achieved by LESS light through the lens •Use landscape/mountain mode •Higher f stop, say f22 •Use wider angle lens •Requires slower shutter speed to compensate for less light through the lens © 2013 David Smith www.imagebyinterface.com No 7 How to Take a Killer Photo 1. Time of day Direction Colour Soft or hard Natural or artificial © 2013 David Smith www.imagebyinterface.com The human eye and camera film or digital sensors do not always record the same thing 6 Creative Travel Photography for Cruisers Dedicated Flash A portable flash gun that couples to an automatic camera and can be controlled by the cameras programmed functions Use the same brand for both flash and camera Fits in hot shoe at the top of an SLR and some point and shoot cameras Bounce Flash Technique Bounce flash DOES NOT work like a ball bouncing off a billiard table bank. The place on the ceiling struck by the flash BECOMES the source of illumination. This will vary due to ceiling texture. You will get a "ball bounce" effect only if the ceiling is a mirror. Bounce:No flash shadows, softer light, angle of light is like sunlight but watch for “raccoon” eyes No bounce: Flash shadows, harsh light, flat look © 2013 David Smith www.imagebyinterface.com 7 Creative Travel Photography for Cruisers www.lumiquest.com Wireless Flash Systems Off Camera Flash for Dramatic Images Handheld flash pointing at face/upper body PC cord Optical Slave Radio transmitter -2.0 EV To darken scene © 2013 David Smith www.imagebyinterface.com 8 Creative Travel Photography for Cruisers Radio Controlled Flashes sync cord extension Hot shoes/ Optical slaves Wireless Trigger Create Panoramas Portofino Automatic Stitching of Image Sequences for Panoramas with: •Some cameras •Some camera supplied software •Photoshop Elements 9 & up •Photoshop CS2 & Up Hugin (free) Rialto Bridge, Venice •PTGUI (high end) © 2013 David Smith www.imagebyinterface.com 9 Creative Travel Photography for Cruisers Using TOPAZ ADJUST 5.0 www.topazlabs.com Add On Plug-in for: Photoshop Elements 6.0 and newer Photoshop CS 3.0 and newer Aperture, Lightroom, $50 Frequent Free Webinars! iPhoto (via free Topaz Fusion Express) Irfanvu (a free product) PaintShop Pro - Impact Plus - Serif Photo Plus © 2013 David Smith www.imagebyinterface.com 10 Creative Travel Photography for Cruisers The Power of Facebook ‘Dave’s Smile Circle’ Technique 1.
