MESSAGE FROM DEAN’S CIRCLE CHAIR ANNUAL FUND On behalf of the Committee, I wish to thank all of our Dean’s Circle members for their generosity towards the Law School and welcome new Dean’s Circle members who contributed during the fiscal year of June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009. The University of Miami School of Law thrives on the commitment and dedication of its Dean’s Circle members. When you give through the Dean’s Circle, you not only invest in the growth and prominence of the Law School, you also support our ability to maintain student scholarships and establish important programs that benefit the students and our community. You enable us to educate quality lawyers and contribute to an active and qualified judiciary. And you help us to propel our School of Law into the ranks of some of the finest legal institutions in America! Annual membership is $100 each year out for those who have graduated within the past four years, $500 for those who graduated in the past five to ten years, and also for members of the judiciary; otherwise annual membership starts with a contribution of $1,000 for everyone else. Your Dean’s Circle membership not only benefits the School of Law, but you too enjoy benefits! Your contribution is tax deductible, and you can use a credit card for your contribution (annually or monthly) to earn miles or points. More importantly, you are invited as guests to a variety of lunches, receptions, discounted CLE’s and other fun events exclusively for Dean’s Circle and President’s Circle members. BARBARA PEREZ, JD ’93 On behalf of the members of the Dean’s Circle, I invite those of you who have not previously joined to participate in the enhancement of the University of Miami School of Law’s future. Please make a gift and join us today. Chair, Dean’s Circle Committee 2008-2009 DEAN’S CIRCLE LEADERSHIP GIFTS Robert A. Ades, JD ’73 Rosa and Carlos M. de la Cruz, JD ’79 James L. The list of donors by class is included in this annual report. We are very grateful to all our alumni and friends who supported the school JEFF CAZEAU, JD ’02 during tough economic times. Our donors are aware of the heavy burden placed upon our law students to fund their legal education. Our loyal alumni play a key role in assisting our students by providing scholarship support, mentoring and placement opportunities. Last year we graduated 372 outstanding new lawyers; 72% remained in Florida while 28% accepted positions in other parts of the country with a number of them moving to New York and the greater Washington, D.C. area to pursue their legal careers. Nearly 14% of our graduates chose to pursue a career in the public sector, which consists of government and public interest work. Many more have expressed an interest to work in the public sector, but doing so means structuring at adequate budget which allows them to meet their financial needs while striving to meet their career goals. Consequently, the majority of our graduates accept jobs in private practice (68%), with the remainder in business (10%), as judicial law clerks (6%), in the military JAG Corps (1%) and in academia (1%). The Law Alumni Association, through our Annual Fund, seeks to support these students by helping the school provide them with scholarships, fellowships and externships. Your generosity allowed us to experience an increase in giving to the Annual Fund for this last fiscal year. During the 2008-2009 the School of Law awarded over $8,000,000 to currently enrolled students. I challenge you to continue, and whenever possible, increase your support as we welcome a new dean, Patricia D. White, to our campus this fall. I hope you will all have an opportunity to meet her and learn from her the great things that are in store for our Alma Mater under her leadership. It is only through your participation and support that we can work toward our goal of making the UM School of Law one of the top in the country. We can only achieve this by increasing the number of donors to our Annual Fund this coming year. As my predecessors have remarked, every gift counts – a $25.00 donation is welcome and it does make a difference. Your continuing support is an expression of your confidence in the legal education provided by our school. Thank you for your generosity, and if you work for a matching gift company, please let us know. I look forward to speaking to all of you at upcoming Alumni events throughout the year. Program, earned a Licenciado en Derecho (Juris Doctor equivalent) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he was the assistant editor of The Official Bulletin of the Law School. Before coming to the Law School, Peralta, who is admitted to the Mexican Bar, practiced law for 15 years as an intellectual property attorney and litigant in his home country of Mexico and as an advisor in the corporate field in the United States. Starting out as a federal examining attorney at the Secretary of Commerce and Industrial Promotion in Mexico City, Mexico, Peralta went on to work at the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property as a national department chief, general counselor, and examining attorney. He also worked as an IP litigation legal director at Malacara and Associates, S.C., in Guadalajara, Mexico; as a corporate advisor at Craft and Sitton, PLLC in Nashville, Tennessee; as an IP litigation legal director at ILF Abogados, S.C. in Guadalajara, Mexico; and as a corporate counselor at Mcintosh and Peralta, LLC, in Nashville, Tennessee. The Burton Young Externship allowed Peralta to work with the Family Court Division for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in Miami, where he assisted in case management for family court judges. “Working with judges on decisions that affect families is a clear shift away from the corporate environment I have experienced,” says Peralta. “Through my studies, I developed a special interest in the emerging area of collaborative law. This externship has given me a fresh perspective on how the various fields of law are interconnected, and I believe it will benefit me as I move forward with my career in the U.S.” FRIENDS OF THE LAW SCHOOL We gratefully acknowledge the following law firms, corporations, foundations, and non-alumni friends for their generous support of the University of Miami School of Law: Hon. University of Miami School of Law 23 PHILANTHROPY THE HARVEY T. REID SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM A scholarship gift is an investment in a young person’s future. One generous couple, Agnes and Harvey T. Reid, believed in the importance of scholarship support, and in 1970 they created the Harvey T. Reid Scholarships at UM Law. To date, over 100 students have been the recipients of this prestigious scholarship program, enabling talented and deserving students to gain the distinctive, lifelong benefit of a University of Miami School of Law education. The Reid Scholarships are awarded to outstanding members of the entering class who possess exemplary academic records, demonstrate leadership qualities, and exhibit the potential for making substantial contributions to the legal profession and society. “The Harvey T. Reid Scholarship Program is widely known and has become a solid tradition at UM Law,” said Therese Lambert, Director of Student Recruiting. “Those selected exemplify outstanding accomplishments with strong promise of representing the school and the profession at the highest levels. Reid Scholars throughout the years have met that promise by not only becoming great lawyers, but also giving back in significant ways – whether through the School or otherwise – so that the scholars who follow are inspired by their stories.” Harvey Reid was a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Arts, where he received the Canadian Governor General’s Medal in recognition of the highest scholastic achievement in his sophomore, junior and senior years. As a Rhodes Scholar, he went on to study law at Trinity College, Oxford. He later joined West Publishing Company, where he rapidly rose from the position of Legal Editor to the Editor-inChief, President, and then Chairman and Director of the company. Reid married his wife, Agnes, in 1966, and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Reid first became interested in the Law School through his longstanding friendship with Fred Lewis, a former dean of the School of Law. He received UM’s honorary doctor of laws in 1973 and in 1977 was awarded the “Chief’s Award” by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida. Harvey Reid passed away in 1985, and Agnes passed away in February, 2009. Samuel J. Dubbin, JD ’81, is a former Reid Scholar. Currently a principal in the law firm of Dubbin & Kravetz, LLP, Dubbin has fond memories of Harvey Reid. “It has been 31 years, but it really doesn’t seem that long ago that I met Harvey Reid,” recalled Dubbin. “He was the figurative patriarch for choosing the recipients of the scholarship. He was both impressive and refreshing, and the fact that he had chosen Miami to support with scholarships was very influential in my decision to attend the Law School.” “Harvey Reid lived by the principle that every man and woman deserved an opportunity to succeed through their personal values and achievements,” added Dubbin. “I am proud of the outstanding quality and diversity of law students and lawyers who attended UM Law through the Reids’ generosity and commitment.” 24 Honor Roll of Donors 2008-2009 Past Reid Scholars David Acton, JD ‘77 Jason Albright, JD ‘04 Monica Aquino, JD ‘99 Jose Astigarraga, JD ‘78 Janice R.Barnes, JD ‘02 Steven Bass, JD ‘88 Harper Batts, JD ‘05 Virginia Beams, JD ‘96 Sheryl Bjork, JD ‘90 Sheldon Blumling, JD ‘98 David Bodian, JD ‘94 Steve Bolotin, JD ‘77 Paul Bonavia, JD ‘75 James Breen, JD ‘80 Jeffrey Breslow, JD ‘82 Lisbeth Bruce, JD ‘92 Rodney Bryson, JD ‘73 Robert Burke, JD ‘84 John Calles, JD ‘92 Christina Ceballos-Levy, JD ‘00 Jooyeun Chang, JD ‘02 Erica Clements, JD ‘88 Marc Cooper, JD ‘75 André Crenshaw, JD ‘97 Jeffrey Deutch, JD ‘73 Ronald Dion, JD ‘76 Paul DiSangro, JD ‘95 Robert Dockery, JD ‘02 Kevin Dorse, JD ‘87 Samuel Dubbin, JD ‘81 Andrea Ewart, JD ‘00 Samantha Feanny, JD ‘09 Hilary Feinstock, JD ‘85 Troy Ferguson, JD ‘89 Dianne Fischer, JD ‘93 Patricia Fletcher, JD ‘83 Gary Franklin, JD ’87, LLME ‘91 George Franklin, JD ‘02 David Freedman, JD ‘73 Peter Fucci, JD ‘89 Laura Gangemi, JD ‘84 Patrick Gent, JD ‘78 Glenn Gerena, JD ‘87 Gershow, Ellen, JD ‘76 Gladstein, Harlan, JD ‘86 Dan Gower, JD ‘98 Barbara Green, JD ‘78 Timothy Haley, JD ‘79 Helen Hauser, JD ‘82 Gary Hirst, JD ‘79 Nancy Hoffmann, JD ‘74 Michael Holt, JD ‘11 (2L) Hunt, Patrick, JD ‘85 Tara Jackson, JD ‘81 Mary Jacobsen, JD ‘90 Amanda Jaffe, JD ‘89 Ashley Kaplan, JD ‘96 Bruce Katzen, JD ‘84 Chauncey Kelly, JD ‘05 Harold Knecht, JD ‘89 Eugenia Lemos, JD ‘92 Edna Lopez, JD ‘84 Susan Loughran, JD ‘99 Sarah Lowe, JD ‘97 Kara MacCullough, JD ‘94 Thomas Mahr, JD ‘81 Deborah Marks, JD ‘82 Thomas McGuigan, JD ‘74 Elliott Messing, JD ‘79 Timothy Morell, JD ‘83 Robin Morey, JD ‘86 Malcolm Neuwahl, JD ‘73 Leon Oldak, JD ‘86 Ljubisa Pejic, JD ‘05 Dung Pham, JD ‘86 Anthony Recio, JD ‘01 Thomas Regnier, JD ‘03 Luis Reiter, JD ‘80 Susan Riess, JD ‘82 Raquel Rodriguez, JD ‘85 Howard Rosen, JD ‘74 Thane Rosenbaum, JD ‘86 Kristina Samuels, JD ‘06 Eduardo Sanchez, JD ‘90 Solimar Santos, JD ‘03 Felice Schonfeld, JD ‘78 Anne Schultz, JD ‘83 Steven Schwarzberg, JD ‘80 Mark Schwimmer, JD ‘79 Gail Serota, JD ‘79 Doug Silvis, JD ‘74 Sara Soto, JD ‘78 Darlene Stosik, JD ‘82 Michael Straher, JD ‘91 Wesley Terry, JD ‘05 Anna Tettamanti, JD ‘97 Aileen Ugalde, JD ‘91 Katherine Yagerman, JD ‘83 Rebecca Yagerman, JD ‘08 Kristopher Zinchiak, JD ‘09 Fernando Zulueta, JD ‘83 Carlos Zumpano, JD ‘99 PHILANTHROPY CARLOS DE LA CRUZ Carlos de la Cruz Mentschikoff Chair in Law and Economics Thanks to the generosity of Carlos M. de la Cruz, Sr., JD ’79, the de la Cruz-Mentschikoff Endowed Chair in Law and Economics was established at the Law School in Soia Mentschikoff’s memory – a former dean at the UM Law School. The de la Cruz-Mentschikoff Endowed Chair will focus on matters of business associations, planning, commercial and international transactions, securities, and antitrust. A graduate of UM Law, de la Cruz also graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School (BS in '62, MBA in '63). He is a lifetime member and past chairman of the University of Miami's Board of Trustees, and two years ago was appointed by the board to chair the Visiting Committee of the University of Miami School of Law. He is a businessman and chairs the board of CC1 Companies, which include the Coca-Cola bottling companies in Puerto Rico and Trinidad & Tobago. He has been very involved in community activities having chaired the board of United Way of Miami-Dade County, and has been a member of the boards of Georgetown University, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, Florida International University Foundation, the Dade Foundation, the Business Assistance Center, and Miami Partners for Progress. “This chair will renew and strengthen the Law School’s commitment to law and economics, and the path-breaking research begun here years ago,” said former Acting Dean Paul R. Verkuil. “ “ All of us remember certain teachers that modified the way we analyze and make decisions. Soia Mentschikoff was such a person - at least for me,” said Mr. de la Cruz. “Hopefully the recipients of the de la Cruz - Mentschikoff Chair in Law and Economics will have the same effect on future generations of UM Law School students who are studying the impact of the construction and interpretation of laws on economic activity. The Robert B. Cole Endowed Lecture Series Established at UM Law “Education is far from book learning,” said Richard Cole. “My dad always believed that it entails the exchange of ideas and thoughts of learned people from various viewpoints and perspectives. It is hoped that this series of lectures will provide such discourse and enhance the law students experience at this great university.” The Miami Law Review will partner with the Cole Lecture Series in providing each renowned lecturer the opportunity to publish his/her remarks in the Law Review. The presence of these predominate legal scholars, jurists, and government officials will help make the Law Review more competitive with many of the leading national journals. “The partnership formed this year between the Cole Lecture Series and the Miami Law Review will be invaluable to the future of our organization,” said Mike Pieciak, JD ’09, who served as editor-in-chief of the Miami Law Review last year. “The Lecture Series will allow the Review to annually host preeminent legal scholars and subsequently print their remarks. We are very grateful to the Cole family and look forward to working with them to not only create a great event, but to also honor the legacy of Robert Cole.” In the past, the Cole Distinguished Jurist Lecture Series attracted some of the most celebrated jurists in the nation. Among them were United States Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Justice John Paul Stevens, Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., Justice Harry a. Blackmun, Justice Antonin Scalia, and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. “ The Cole family first created the Robert B. Cole Lecture Series in the late 1980’s,” recalled Professor and Dean Emerita Mary Doyle. “Through their generosity we brought seven justices to the Law School in as many years. Each Cole lecture was a wonderful occasion, a chance to bring together students, alums and faculty in an intellectually exciting way, and to portray our law school as the vibrant place it is. I am heartened to see the Cole family renew this opportunity for the law school community. “ For more than twenty years, the late Robert Bates Cole, a distinguished and powerful Miami attorney, served as counsel for the University of Miami and helped bring seven U.S. Supreme Court justices to the University as part of the Robert B. Cole Distinguished Jurist Lectures. Upon his death in 1997, he left a portion of his estate to the School of Law to create a lecture series. Recently, his son, Richard Cole, a managing partner in the Miami office of Cole, Scott RICHARD COLE & Kissane, PA, decided to establish The Robert B. Cole Endowed Lecture Series through his father’s trust, which will enable the Law School to bring some of the most exciting legal minds in the nation to campus. Cole and his firm will provide the funding for the lecture series until the endowment starts to produce sufficient income. The newly endowed Cole Lecture Series is expected to provide a forum for distinguished legal scholars to share their thinking on important issues. These prominent speakers will help to spark lively discussion among faculty, students, and members of the bench and bar. The Project is spearheaded by the Center’s Community Economic Development and Design Clinic, a joint venture collaboration with the University’s School of Architecture and Florida Legal Services. The purpose of the Project is to provide multi-disciplinary resources in education, law, and social services to under-served West Grove residents by establishing congregation-based church partnerships through the West Grove’s sixteen-church Ministerial Alliance. The Project entails five interrelated initiatives. The first initiative involves rights education seminars. Conducted by Law School clinical faculty and students, the church-based education seminars address a wide range of topics affecting West Grove residents, including children’s health, education, elder law, tenants’ rights, homeowner protection, and crime prevention. When possible, the seminars are presented in conjunction with University, for-profit, nonprofit, and government partners. The Project’s second initiative involves capacity building workshops. Likewise conducted by Law School clinical faculty and students, these church-based workshops focus on economic development, financial literacy, and nonprofit governance for individuals, groups, and organizations. Again, when possible, the workshops are presented in conjunction with University, for-profit, nonprofit, and government partners. Center Advisory Board member Louis Chiavacci of Merrill Lynch helped launch the financial literacy workshops in spring 2008. The Project’s third initiative involves referrals for legal assistance. The Project offers legal assistance referrals in cooperation with the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Bar Association and the Law School’s Children and Youth Law Clinic, Bankruptcy Clinic, and Health and Elder Law Clinic in the fields of foster care, bankruptcy, health, and elder law. Staffed by Law School clinical faculty and students, the Clinics provide direct service and law reform representation to indigent clients in Miami-Dade County. The Project also will offer legal assistance referrals in cooperation with Florida Legal Services and volunteer lawyers from law firms in Miami-Dade County. Senior United States District Judge William Hoeveler with Judge Donald Graham at the March 2009 ceremony honoring Judge Graham with the Hoeveler award. The Project’s fourth initiative involves the creation of an oral history church archive. The Project works to develop an oral history archive to be housed at each church through a studentfaculty partnership with Ransom Everglades High School. The oral histories of interested members of each congregation and ministry will be conducted by Ransom Everglades High School students and undergraduate students from the College of Arts and Sciences, and videotaped by graduate students from the School of Law and elsewhere across the University. Students from the College of Arts and Sciences and Ransom Everglades will also participate in multi-media projects (drawing, painting, and photography) documenting the churches and their congregations. Both church- and school-based receptions will be held at the conclusion of each semester. The Project’s fifth initiative involves the establishment of a national consortium on campus-church-and-community collaboration. The Project will link colleges and universities to new community-based campus-church collaborations through conferences and publications addressing faith-inspired civic engagement and service-learning in higher education. 30 Honor Roll of Donors 2008-2009 Judge William M. University of Miami School of Law 31 H.O.P.E Helping Others Through Pro Bono Efforts With an unprecedented level of service and advocacy, 2008-2009 marked the 10th Anniversary of the HOPE program, and just its second year as the law school’s stand-alone Public Interest Resource Center. As many are still discovering, HOPE is dedicated to instilling a pro bono ethic by facilitating pro bono legal advocacy and public service opportunities for law students and alumni, and working to provide access to justice to underserved populations locally, nationally and across the globe. Among the new initiatives launched in the past year, HOPE volunteers have advocated for the labor and employment rights of lowwage workers through the Workplace Justice Project and have worked to help restore civil rights in collaboration with the ACLU, Public Defender’s and State Attorney’s Office. In addition, UM Law students have utilized HOPE to identify, create, and pursue initiatives in the areas of financial literacy, juvenile justice, housing, and domestic violence advocacy, to name just a few. The HOPE Fellows Program, our flagship initiative, has grown from two local agency partners to include recent international placements in countries such as Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Lebanon, England, and China. In brief, HOPE Fellows work with domestic and international public interest agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to provide much-needed legal advocacy to children, immigrants, the homeless, victims of hate crimes, discrimination, and abuse, and others who are in need. Students who express an interest in competing for one of the coveted fellowships receive support from HOPE as they design their ideal internship, where they are responsible for providing a unique service to the agency and constituents. Upon their return to campus, HOPE Fellows continue to earn their modest stipends by implementing a project to engage and educate the UM Law community, while also assuming an active leadership role on the Public Interest Leadership Board. This year, seventeen Fellows are developing their legal advocacy skills with such agencies as Florida Legal Services, LA County’s Immigration Legal Assistant Project, the Hotel Rwanda Rusesabagina Foundation, Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., the Department of Homeland Security, the ACLU of Southern California, Bay Area Legal Services, the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center, and Sierra Leone’s Timap for Justice. Moreover, HOPE strives to expose students to the myriad of legal and advocacy opportunities by presenting a public interest lecture series, sponsored by the University of Miami’s Citizens Board, stand-alone issue-oriented and a social justice film series that incorporate speakers’ panels comprised of members of the bar and bench, faculty, and community advocates, along with numerous hands-on initiatives to develop lawyering and advocacy skills. We salute the many alumni who have made pro bono an important aspect of their professional lives and welcome your calls and emails to let us know about the great pro bono and public service work you’re performing. At the same time, we encourage all alumni to contact HOPE to find out about the many ways you can engage with, and inspire, current UM Law students. Please contact us at umhope@law. miami.edu or (305) 284-2599. Whole Foods Supports HOPE from L to R, 3L Evian White, Whole Foods Marketing Director Natalie White, Asst. My ability to play even a small part in encouraging them is exciting and rewarding. “ Therese Lambert Director of Student Recruiting UM Law Students Support Centro Campesino During HOPE’s 2008 Day of Service “ HOPE’s strong and dynamic presence in the legal community provides an avenue for law students and attorneys to make public service and pro bono work a part of their professional lives. Recognizing the importance of balancing one’s legal career with civic engagement, HOPE offers an opportunity for every student and attorney to contribute in a manner and degree that fits with their life and career. 2009 HOPE Fellows University of Miami School of Law “ Preston J. What you may not realize is that you can continue to support the University of Miami School of Law, at a time when your support is needed most, and receive benefits in return through planned giving. Planned giving can help you balance your charitable interests with your personal financial goals while realizing significant tax and other benefits for you, your heirs and/or your estate. Through planned giving, you can make a gift you might otherwise have thought impossible. There are a number of planned giving vehicles you can use to make a gift to the University of Miami School of Law, depending on your particular goals and circumstances. For example, did you know… • that you can earn a fixed income for life (at a rate currently higher than you can get through most conventional CDs and fully secured by the University), receive a tax deduction and benefit the University of Miami School of Law through a charitable gift annuity? • or that you can leave a bequest to the University of Miami School of Law in your will or trust, thereby retaining control over your assets during your lifetime but gaining important tax and other benefits for your estate upon your death? • or that you can maximize your charitable deduction (taking advantage of historically low interest rates) and accomplish your goal of wealth transfer to your heirs while making a current gift to the University of Miami School of Law through a charitable lead trust? • or that you can name the University of Miami School of Law as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or IRA account thereby removing highly taxed assets from your estate and benefitting your heirs? • or that you can name the University of Miami School of Law as owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy and receive an immediate charitable tax deduction? • or that you can donate your residence to the University of Miami School of Law but remain there for life (a retained life estate)? Whatever your personal circumstances are, there is a planned giving vehicle that is right for you. For all who support the University of Miami School of Law, in good times and in challenging times, planned giving is a powerful way to make a lasting impact on the future of the School and to leave a personal legacy. Call today to see how you and the University of Miami School of Law can benefit from a planned gift.
