he spread his cloak on the waters of the lake and crossed it without getting wet.

exceptional beauty, peppered with frescoed chapels of considerable artistic and

t Hermitage of Caterina del Sasso: set in a rock, overhanging the lake,
it hosts works of considerable artistic worth. Recently restored, it can be
reached either from the water or dry land, and enjoys an exceptional view.
Visitors will marvel in the efforts made to build this church clinging to the rock.
Shopping is a real source of entertainment on Lake Maggiore, which hosts
some of the most internationally well-known names in household articles,
textiles and clothing: Alessi, Lagostina, Bialetti, Puppieni, Piazza, Ruffoni, Italo
Ottenetti, Loro Piana and many more. These companies all have outlets open to
the public, where visitors can make their purchases at very good prices.
The local cuisine is very varied and tasty, and ranges from lake specialities to
those of the mountains. Filets of bass, break, pike, trout, risottos, Tapulon
(donkey meat cooked in red wine), Cuchela (potatoes cooked with pork spare
ribs and bacon in a traditional lava stone pan), or even Bagianada (mangetout
with lard and red wine) and gnocchi from the Val d’Ossola made with chestnut
flour. The salami and cold meats are also worth a mention, especially the
bresaola and the mortadella in the traditional folded form of the Val d’Ossola,
the ham and spiced lard of the Val Vigezzo or even the violino di capra [goat
leg] common to the entire area, as are the cheeses, from the Ossolano d’Alpe
or Bettelmatt, a full-fat cheese made from cow’s milk, to Spress, to be savoured
with Stinchett or Amiasc, very thin, soft flat bread that should be eaten while it
is still warm, the former made with wheat flour, the latter with rye flour, or with
the black bread of Coimo made with rye flour, and Val Grande honey. Lastly, for
dessert, guests can savour small delicacies such as Brotjê or Kruschli fritters,
the former small and round, the latter thin and rectangular, the Fugascine di
Mergozzo, squares of short pastry with Marsala, the Margheritine di Stresa, a
very crumbly biscuit created in honour of the visit of Princess Margherita of
Savoy to Stresa, made with butter and shaped in the form of a margherita
[margherita is used as a proper name and also means daisy], the Pan dolce di
Cannobio, made from hazelnut flour and almonds, or even the latest additions,
the Intresine, a crunchy delicacy covered in almonds and filled with chocolate.
The legendary Prunent, a wine with an intense aroma that has been produced
since 1300, has recently regained favour, while latest additions include the
Nouv Bruschett which has a smooth, slightly tannic taste or the full-bodied Cà
d’Maté.

At the end of the 19th century the original villa was demolished,
and a much larger villa in an eclectic neo-baroque style was built
in its place. The grandeur of the building still strikes the visitors
even today. The villa and its wonderful garden dating back 1820,

Set on the eastern shore of the Fishermen’s Island, Restaurant Belvedere
is in the heart of the Borromeo Gulf. The veranda and the attached dining
room offer a stunning view on Isola Madre and the Lake, and can host up
to 250 guests. A bright environment is furnished in a simple but elegant
way, and suits perfectly with ceremony and gala set-ups, as well as more

The cuisine offers dishes from the Italian tradition, that are able to make all
the local ingredients from the lake and the sourrounding valleys stand out.
In the suggestive scenery of Lake Maggiore, one can admire the most

The Lake Maggiore Zipline is the emotion of flying within the reach of everybody. As the crow flies, the distance from Pian d’Arla (1.307 meters altitude / 4.290
