The 106th annual Commencement program held at the State Theatre in Playhouse Square welcomed 398 graduates dressed in purple and gold. The students proceeded in as the Edward Vittardi Band played “Pomp and Commencement Superintendent Circumstance.” The RSS Lakewood Color Guard did the presentation of the colors followed by the playing of the National Anthem by the Commencement Band. Senior Class President Christine Boening opened the ceremony with a warm welcome. Both Ashley Demeter and Marie Bartinelli addressed the audience with memories, stories and quotes of their fellow graduates. “Class of 2012, remember your past, let go of your regrets, learn from your mistakes, and most importantly, live in the present, and I mean truly live. Take every moment, and turn it into something remarkable,” said Bartinelli. “It is so easy to waste our lives: our days, our hours, our minutes. So as the next chapter of our lives unfolds, remember not to take for granted all of the little things our high school, our teachers, our friends and family have given to us. The patience, effort and support that has created a backbone of strength will carry us through even the most impossible days,” said Demeter. High School Principal Mic Becerra distributed certificates and presented the class. “In life, it may take many years to learn the importance of true friends,” said Becerra. “Some people learn it in the workplace, others in the military, but many of you have learned it early in your lives, which I believe will assist you greatly in your life goals.” Superintendent Ed Vittardi then spoke, challenging each and every student to value what’s truly important in life. He also remarked on the first time he met the class of 2012. “I met individuals with a personality, real personality! I met individuals that capture you, that make you want to spend more time with them, that make you want to hear the next crazy story, the next request or life observation,” said Vittardi. Dr. John Kelly, President of the North Royalton Board of Education also addressed the Class of 2012, urging them to pursue opportunities of greatness. “You can’t get others to buy into your dreams and aspirations until you are totally committed to them yourself. In times of great challenges, there are always great opportunities if you know how to pursue them,” said Dr. Kelly. The roll call of the Class of 2012 was announced by Kristianna Bancroft and Rebecca Clements. Congratulations Class of 2012! The Teacher of the Year is Cindy Velotta from the Early Childhood Center. Cindy is an intervention specialist at the ECC and has been with the district since 1995. She started out at Albion Elementary and then went to North Royalton Middle School in 1996. She has been at the preschool since opening in 2003. Cindy earned her Master’s degree from Cleveland State in Early Childhood Special Education. At the June 2009 Board of Education meeting, she was honored with the Master Teacher Award for the State of Ohio. “Cindy believes in her craft and works to improve. She is mindful that each child is someone’s most precious someone. Because of this, they are also her children. She works to insure that each child is respected as an individual while at the same time learning how to be a member of the group,” said Vittardi, who presented Cindy with the award. “Cindy truly represents what being a teacher is all about.” The Support Staff Person of the Year is George Hasek. George was a bus driver employed by the district since 1970. He retired in 1996 and worked as a substitute bus driver from 1996-2005. In March 2005, George was hired as a fulltime employee. He has worked many summers in the transportation office assisting with routing schedules. Not only could George be seen driving a school bus around town, he was an active member of the North Royalton Alumni Association and regularly attended school and community events. Just days after George was recognized by Ed Vittardi and Transportation Supervisor Joe Marinowski, he was hospitalized and passed away a short time later. His family was present at the reception to accept his award. Jim Presot, assistant superintendent, read a tribute to George at the reception. “When parents and colleagues describe George, they use words like kind, thoughtful, conscientious, trustworthy, funny, dedicated, and how he has an infectious smile. The North Royalton City Schools are fortunate to have a person like George that epitomizes dedication and passion as a staff member in our district. He has so many outstanding qualities that make him such a deserving person for this award.” “Friends of Education” Show Dedication to District and Students Mayor Robert Stefanik and the City of North Royalton; Mayor Sam Alai and the City of Broadview Heights; and John Ranucci, North Royalton resident and longtime supporter of the schools are the 2012 North Royalton City Schools “Friends of Education.” There are a number of valuable partnerships with the Cities of North Royalton and Broadview Heights that supported the district’s decision to name both Mayors and their cities “Friends of Education.” They include: - Both cities being active participants and supporters of the Partnership for a Healthy North Royalton. - The district and the City of North Royalton are working cooperatively in seeking grant dollars from state and national agencies for a Safe Routes to Schools Program. The City of North Royalton also continues to provide the school district with a school resource officer that helps make the schools a safe place. - Both cities partner with the district on drug free activities, after-prom support, Teen Truth Live assembly, Red Ribbon Week activities, as well as other safety and antibullying programs. - Both cities have a presence on the district’s Business Advisory Council that meets throughout the year to discuss the development of business/ school partnerships. - Both cities were instrumental partners in the new Serpentini Stadium at Gibson Field. They also work cooperatively in sharing resources such as athletic fields, equipment, and with Broadview Heights, a place for the district’s Early Childhood Center. - The City of North Royalton assisted the school district in finding a temporary solution for a bus storage lot for the school buses as a result of the renovations that occurred at the High School Stadium. - The City of North Royalton has assisted the school district in developing a relationship with the YMCA to allow the district’s swim program to use the new pool. The city also works with the city recreational program to develop leagues and camps to assist both school and community athletes. John Ranucci is a 30-year resident of North Royalton and a parent of three graduates of the school system. “He is indicative of the best of our school community because despite the fact his kids have come and gone through the district he still believes in and is committed to being a part of helping the next generation,” said Superintendent Ed Vittardi. Ranucci was the chair of the Shape our Schools’ Future Committee that has been working more than a year in assessing the district’s facilities. The group recently made recommendations for future improvements to the Board of Education and community. He serves on the district’s Financial Advisory Committee as well. “The students, staff, and community of North Royalton City Schools have greatly benefited thanks to the dedication and leadership of John Ranucci. He more than epitomizes the meaning of Friend of Education; he embodies all that makes our North Royalton school community second to none.” “Our district is very fortunate to have the strong support of our Mayors, as well as residents like John Ranucci, who are passionate about the success of our students both now and in years to come,” said Superintendent Ed Vittardi. “The Mayors and John have the clear foresight of what’s best for our community and its children and strive to make a difference in so many ways each day.” NRHS was an Overall Positive Experience YES: 84.04% NO: 14.46% NO Response: 1.51% One of the goals of the North Royalton City School District Strategic Plan is to obtain student feedback on all aspects of our district. The Class of 2012 participated in a survey to share such reactions. In addition, students will periodically be surveyed up to five years after graduation. The information above are excerpts from the comprehensive survey. 2 Mayor Sam Alai and the City of Broadview Heights John Ranucci Mayor Robert Stefanik and the City of North Royalton 11 NRHSGraduation 2012 NRHSGraduation 2012 Cum Laude North Royalton Educational Foundation Grants Magna Cum Laude The North Royalton Educational Foundation presented several grants to teachers and staff at its Annual Reception held on Wednesday, April 25 at Carrie Cerino’s. These include: Liz Goodman and Laura Kunz Early Childhood Center Grant: Wireless Switch and Adaptive Toys to aid children with severe communication delays in the Intensive Preschool Classroom. The Early Intervention Specialist and the Speech-Language Pathologist will use these to help increase communicative interactions of the special needs students within the preschool environment. Shannon Suhodolsky and Amanda McClain Albion Elementary Grant: Instant Learning Centers (8 total) will be a vital part of the Guided Reading Program. These centers allow students independent work as the teacher reads with small groups during center time. These centers are unique because they are designed for up to four students to work at one time, and students can work at their own pace. Tracy Csizmadia Royal View Elementary Grant: Math Pentathlon Games will be used for intervention groups at Royal View Elementary to improve problem-solving skills in higher achieving math groups. Jill Gutia Valley Vista Elementary Grant: WhisperPhone is a hands-free, acoustical voicefeedback headset that enables children to focus and hear themselves read more clearly without hearing the students around them. This allows students to develop their reading skills. 10 Sean Drvenkar North Royalton High School Grant: Autoclave - An autoclave uses moist or dry heat and pressure to sterilize the agar, all the beakers, test tubes, and other tools used during lab. The autoclave the science department currently has is well over 25 years old and the seal around the front hatch is not airtight. This causes a decrease in pressure inside the autoclave chamber that subsequently results in using unsterilized equipment. Michelle Klann North Royalton High School Grant: German Movies and DVD Player to show movies in German to immerse students in listening to the language and hear native speakers. In addition, the grant will allow for the purchase of six movies to show each level of German (II to IV) one movie each nine weeks. Susan Finelli, Wade Schneider, Dave Hartmann North Royalton City Schools Grant: Nature Center - The depletion of the forest undergrowth is likely due to excessive deer grazing. Preliminary data show some species represented in the soil seed bank but not present in the field. Therefore, in order to continue the District’s Nature Center initiative for developing the forest for educational use, materials to build two 35’ square deer exclosures were granted. North Royalton High School celebrated the academic excellence of 49 seniors at the Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude Luncheon this spring.
