Notes from the Editor's Desk
This might be the last A Quail Call that you will find in your mail box.
Terry announced that starting in September the Quail will only be available online. There are numerous advantages for that. The biggest is the savings for the
club in terms of cost and postage. Deadlines for providing articles for the Quail
can be more relaxed as we won't need to get it to the printer early for them to do
their thing. It also means that members won't have to worry about providing me
with a change of address if they move or spend their winters elsewhere. Plus, it
looks so much nicer in color. You can really see how beautiful the cars really are.
To all correspondents: if you have email, please email your chapter news. Please email to ModelAJ@NEO.RR.COM. I appreciate those who use this method. If you don't know how to attach pictures,
you can send pictures separately in the mail and I will scan them.

On June 10 through 17 we held are 2012 Penn-Ohio tour, the TRISTATE ADVENTURE, in the Steubenville, Ohio area. What a great time
and a lot of great camaraderie! What a great trip! We had 43 “A’s” and a
total of 47 cars. Thanks to everyone that was part of this adventure. This is
“PENN-OHIO”!!!
We also have found out that we will be having a 2013 TOUR. This
tour will be taking us to Bardstown, Ky. This tour will be called Kentucky
Bluegrass Tour during the week of June 9 through 16, 2013. I can’t wait.
Keep looking for updates on this tour.
On August 19th we will be head to Cook’s Forest, Pennsylvania for our August Penn-Ohio meet
which will be held by the Ridge Runners Chapter. We are looking forward to a great day, and we will be
having a Dice-run meet. HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!
As you all have read in July’s “QUAIL CALL,” this will be our last hard copy of the “QUAIL CALL”

For our program President John Tucker gave
an informative and detailed report on the Tri-State
Adventure Penn-Ohio 2012 tour. Tuckers, Rileys,
Saturday, June 16, was our meeting at Boyds and Macris took the tour from Keystone. Our

someone’s front lawn. Also near the ranch was an
antique manure spreader which was decorated
with many silk flowers and an American flag in the
center of the spreader’s side. Quite unique. Most
of us attended the local Greek festival at least once
and ate until we were bulging. Another day our
hosts, Jayne and Terry Zavacky, invited us to eat
at a Chinese restaurant. Bob never wanted to eat
Chinese but after that delicious buffet, he is ready
to go again. Bob and Phil especially enjoyed all
the large excavating machines at one business—
Caterpillars, etc. I would hate to restore one of those
giant machines.
Each couple received a “goody bag” upon
registration, created by Jayne Zavacky—a lady
with many talents. One of the goodies was a little
bag of marbles from Marble King Company. One
evening at our Best Western motel, round tables
were set up near the swimming pool and it was
fun watching people play marbles. Our own Jack
Riley was runner-up winner in the competition.
Steubenville is known as the city of murals and it
truly is. There are 23 beautiful murals and I took
pictures of 17 while there. So many great memories
but especially we thank Jayne and Terry for all their
hard work and the evening that they hosted us at
their home/garage for a fun picnic. Best of all was
seeing all their collections in their home—they have
their very own museum and it would take a long
time to view all of it. Our tour mascot was Jayne’s
LARGE Gund bear named Clancy who got much
attention riding in the back seat of their Model A.
Macris, Rileys and Boyds traveled home
together and of course, we had to stop for ice cream
at the Tee Pee Tasty Treats shop at Mt. Jackson, PA.
While eating our treats a stretch limo pulled into the
lot and out jumped the groom and six groomsmen
in their tuxedos (minus jackets in the heat). Their
photographer followed them around the building
to take a few pictures. When they headed back to
the limo, they spied our cars and came over. The
groom had his picture taken in Jack Riley’s Model A
so it will go down in history in someone’s wedding
album. We thank God for a wonderful, safe Tri-State
Adventure with so many “old” friends plus many
“new” friends.

June 23, 2012 – The Elms event turn out
for this event was a memorable one because Dave
and Barb Weisel won best of show for their Model
A Truck even though it had dirty tires! Way to go
Dave and Barb!
Stan Hywett 2012 Father Day Car Show.
Because of the rain George and Polly Pirri almost
stayed home on Fathers Day. Now they‘re happy
the rain stopped and they took their Model A car
and off they went to the Automobile Show at Stan
Hywett. George’s car won First Place! This has been
a long endeavor for George. More than six years of
hard work, lots of money, lots of friends helping out
with time and car parts. Frank and George were the
first. George Zimmerman got a trailer and the three
guys took the many car parts to 1741 Grant Avenue.
There it became an award winning 1930 Model A.
Others who helped include: John Menches, John
Papadeonise, and Jim Davis. The car has been sold
to a fellow who has not had a collector car before
and wanted a good one. We think he got one! George
appreciates the help and the warm accolades for his
accomplishment!

Findlay the day after they experienced lots of damage
from wind. Some detours around downed limbs and
wires were required. Howard and Cheryl McNish
had us scheduled to meet in the annex of their
church which happened to be one of the very few
buildings that had electricity and air conditioning.
Unfortunately the church sustained damage to the
roof (just recently replaced) and water leaked in on
the organ so a wedding scheduled for the day had
to be moved. This meeting was planned to be on
the day the racers arrived participating in the Great
Race. This also is the 200th Birthday of Findlay.
Our cars lined part of a side street and we had the
debut of our new Flying Quail banner. (Advertising
does bring inquiries.) The racecars arrived at about
5 pm and a big section of the downtown had their
electricity restored at about the same time. There
seemed to be quite a few Model A’s in the race (the
comment “was they are a workhorse”). Several of
the racers asked about our group saying there was
a nice collection of quality cars on display and were
curious why we had CB’s in the cars! It was great
to have 19 members and 2 guests for the meeting as
we had several members unable to attend because
they were home tending to their generators.
Unfortunately we were unable to make a usual visit
to Dietsch’s because they had no power. Everyone
was pleased we were able to participate in this event
especially under the circumstances.
Flying Quail

The May meeting of the Flying Quail hosted
by the Don and Bonnie Rosebrook was held at Jed’s
in Findlay on Saturday evening the 12th of May. Vice
President Brad Bailey welcomed 17 members and
2 guests (arriving by motorcycle) were Larry and
Luella Browneller’s son Mike and Grandson Josh.
Val & Mary Jane Young updated the chapter on our
upcoming long weekend tour scheduled in August.
After the meeting was adjourned the group headed
to Dietsch’s for ice cream.
June 30th found the Flying Quail meeting in

We are in the full season for driving finally and
full is so right. Our cars have been on the go and members
have been busy. June started out with our meeting on
the 10th with a trip to the Indian Museum in downtown
Willoughby. It was a hot day but we managed to bring
an assortment of cars, Model A’s, BMW, Corvette, ’56
Chevy to name a few. The museum was small but was
packed with thousands of Indian artifacts. Our own Tom
& Gerry Reed donated over 700 artifacts to the museum
that day and the personnel were delighted. Then on to
the Branding Iron Restaurant for a much needed cool
drink and food.
On Father’s Day the Lake County Historical
Society had a pancake breakfast with NEO cars on
display. It was a fun day for all.
Another outing was at the Thompson Senior
Center for their Strawberry Festival and NEO brought
out the cars for the seniors to see and ride.
Some of our members have been on the mend
from the various surgeries/illnesses: Paul Witt had bypass surgery, Chris Wolf had knee surgery and Peggy
Geisman is at Heather Hill on the mend. Prayers go
out to all.
We have so much more to do this summer that
I’m sure there will be lots of news next time. Keep those
A’s on the road and keep cool.

Ken and Linda Rachel billed their Saturday, June
9th club tour as a “Pumps, Radios and Ghosts” tour. This
brought out 11 A’s and 2 moderns...good crowd!!!!! We
wound our way down beautifully scenic Rte #39 through
Millersburg and Apple Creek and onto Dover wondering
what the Rachel’s had in store for us. Several turns
downtown and there appeared the Gas Pump Heaven
Museum. The outside display of an old Sohio gas station
was remarkable and detailed but nothing like what
awaited inside!!!! Every nook and cranny was filled with
over 50+ vintage gas pumps and hundreds of nostalgic

oil company advertising signs and promotional items.
In and among all of this was a 1950 Whizzer motorbike,
Schwinn bicycles, bumper cars, phone booths and other
assorted 50’s “stuff” from Lone Ranger cap guns to
Lincoln Logs, Flexible Flyer sleds and Red Ryder BB
guns!!!! Lots to see but our hosts paraded us down the
street to the Auman Museum of Radio and Television.
What a history lesson...that most of us remember....rare
and unusual TVs, comic books, games, lamps, photos
and studio props pertaining to the early days of radio
and television. From 5" television receivers to “stick
on” three-d and color sheets for early TVs and sounds
of early shows...quite a collection. After lunch down the
street at Crockers, we all wondered about the “Ghosts”
part of the tour and when we pulled up to the TolandHerzig Funeral Home, we were still all a little unsure
until we met owner and curator John Herzig of “Famous
Endings” and his hobby of collecting memorabilia from
famous persons funerals. Objects collected from the
funerals of president, actors, musicians and authors
hang in cabinets on the walls and shelves throughout
the funeral home. John gave amusing and amazing
tales of how he has acquired these items. Over 16 years
he’s been collecting and his sources and connections
to acquire these items has grown and he receives such
on about a daily basis. The list of names reads like a
Who’s Who. George Burns, Tiny Tim, Bob Hope, Casey
Stengel, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Dale Earnhardt,
Sonny Bono, Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Landon, Marilyn
Monroe, Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Princess
Di, JFK and a fascinating story about Jack Kevorkian’s
funeral that he attended. What a place!!!! What a
surprise!!! Fascinating!!! We thanked the Rachel’s for
an “entertaining” trip on a beautiful day.
Because the Penn-Ohio tour started the next
day, seven Copus Hillers, the Rachel’s, Foley’s, Witmers,
Davises, Saylors, Vickers and Bob Hall, decided that
rather than drive home we’d stay in New Philly and
head for Steubenville on Sunday. Since Gene Vickers
is from the New Philly/Dover/Deerfield area, he led us
on a scenic trip that included stops at the Uhrichsville
cemetery with its “different” tombstones and lunch in
Dennison at the Trax Diner in the restored railroad
depot. Some more back roads and an ice cream stop at the

Two great Model A days and the tour hasn’t even started
yet!!!!! As will be noted elsewhere, the Tri State Tour
that Terry and Jayne Zavacky planned and executed
(that’s a pun from Moundsville!!!!) was superb!!!!! Great
rooms, wonderful scenery, great fellowship, interesting
and varied sites and activities and short mileage days
with good weather!!!!! Lots of thanks and kudos to the
Zavackys!!!!
found a great metal bridge built in 1903. We made
a point of traveling over it at least once a day from
Ohio to West Virginia and back to Ohio every day.
It was even light up at night—making it even more
special for us! Terry and Jane did a great job of
organizing and planning the week—it was well
appreciated by the Cranksters.

How to Become a Good Member of a Club

June 14th was Sundaes on Thursday for the
12 Crankster cars that came to the ice cream social
held in the Medina Square every year. Luckily the
rain held off and it turned out to be a perfect evening
for socializing with each other as well as the many
people who attend the event every year. We have
been honored guests at the social for a number of
years. Our cars are parked around the square where
many different areas are available - to try out games
that are geared toward families as well as the ice
cream available. Of course the ice cream sundaes
(that were brought to us as we sat near our cars)
were so tasty that we didn’t even need a reason to
stop for ice cream on the way home!
The Cranksters who attended the Penn-Ohio
trip to Steubenville, Ohio were meanwhile having
a great time for the weeklong event planned by the
Zavackys. It was a lot of fun heading north, south,
east and west to Pennsylvania, West Virginia and
Ohio on different days. In fact there was so much to
do extra each day that one had to limit what to do in
addition to the planned activities. The Cranksters
1. Do not come to the meetings.
2. But, if you do, come late.
3. If the weather does not suit you, don’t think of coming.
4. If you do attend a meeting, gripe about the officers
and other members.
5. Never accept an office. It’s easier to criticize than
do things.
6. Nevertheless, get sore if you are not appointed to a
committee. But, if you are, don’t attend the committee
meetings.
7. If asked by the chairman to give your opinion
regarding some important matter, tell him you have
nothing to say. After the meeting, tell everyone how
things ought to be.
8. Do nothing more than is absolutely necessary, but
when other members roll up their sleeves and willingly
and unselfishly use their ability to help matters along,
howl that the club is being run by a clique.
9. Hold back your dues as long as possible, or do not
pay at all.
10. Don’t bother about getting new members. Let the
secretary do it.
11. When a banquet is given, tell everyone that money is
being wasted on blow-outs, which make a big noise and
accomplish nothing.
12. When no banquets are given, say that the club is dead
and needs a tin can tied to it.
13. If asked to sit at the speaker’s table, modestly refuse.
14. If you are not asked, resign from the club.
15. Do not tell the club how it can help you, but if it
doesn’t help you, resign.
