Principal’s Message
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Welcome to April everyone!! As you know April showers also bring mud and puddles. So, please remind your
child(ren) to wear appropriate clothing and foot wear and outdoor shoes need to be removed prior to walking
the hallways. Also, staying out of puddles and mud helps keep students dry throughout the day.
The safety of our school community is something that we must take very seriously at Harwin. School starts at
8:40am, and the welcome/warning bell rings at 8:35 am. Students are expected to be in class at 8:40 am.
Many students are repeatedly coming to school late and as such are missing out on the regular morning
routines and valuable learning time. Please make the effort to be on time—thank you. Part of ensuring that
your child is safe at school is making certain that attendance is done in a timely manner every morning and
afternoon and that students who arrive late sign into the office as soon as they arrive. After school supervision
ends at 2:47 pm, and it is expected the playgrounds are clear by this time, unless parents/guardians are with
students. Please do your best to ensure your child is picked up by this time.
It is also very important that we know exactly who is in our school at all times. This means that everyone who
comes into the school stop in at the office. If you are dropping in, please inform the school secretary. Should
you have something that needs to be delivered to your child, like forgotten homework or a lunch, we will be
happy to ensure that your child gets their items during a natural break time so students are not disrupted
during class time. If you are waiting for your child at the end of the day, please wait in the main foyer (during
cold weather), or out on the school grounds or by the outside doors until students have been dismissed from
class. Thank you so much for your attention to this, and for your support of all of our efforts to create a safe
and caring learning community for our students.
Many students like to bring electronics to school. Please note our rules regarding electronics at school (cell
phones, ipods, mp3 players etc). These devices are not to be used or seen during school time and are not
allowed to be used on school property. Camera devices are not allowed to be used at any time at school due
to Freedom of Information Protection of Privacy. If it is absolutely necessary for your child to have a device,
please remind them to put them away in their backpacks or give them to their teacher to store in a safe place
until after school when students can use them once they have left the school grounds. In addition, sometimes
these items have been known to go missing or are stolen, so please only bring them to school if absolutely
necessary, otherwise such items are better left safe at home.

Special Note regarding student absences
It has come to our attention that the voice mail will not accept messages from ‘private’ numbers and we are
also not receiving ‘text to landline’ calls. This is a Telus issue and they are fully aware of it. When your child is
absent, you can always email your information to Mrs. Gregg at dgregg@sd57.bc.ca.

our February Book Fair. Our last Book Fair for this school year will be in

BARKERVILLE FUNDRAISER – Friday, April 15, 2016
Mrs. Mulligan’s Division 12 class and Mrs. Sklapsky’s Division 10 class are having a fundraiser on April
15th in the gym. The doors will open at 5:30pm with a bake sale, mini garage sale, fish pond, crafts and
face painting, and a full concession. The movie "The Good Dinosaur" will play at 6:00pm. The cost is $5.00 per
family or $2.00 per person. All children must attend with an adult.
HUGE THANK YOU to MCELHANNEY CONSULTING SERVICES LTD. for the $500 donation to help Ms.
Sklapsky's and Ms. Mulligan's classes make this exciting year end trip to Barkerville!
Community Schools Update:
After School Clubs! Thank you to all parents/guardians for your prompt response for this set of after
school programs. Unfortunately all programs are now full. Thank you also to all the parents and
guardians for dropping off and picking children up on time. This is very helpful for programs to run
successfully!
Kids of Steel Triathlon (swim, bike, run) takes place on Sunday, May 29th. Registration forms are
out now!! Any parents interested in having their children attend, please see Ms. Alexander for
registration forms by April 19th. Our Harwin team is training FIVE days a week for this awesome
event. Thank you to Jason Keller from Fit as a Fighter for volunteering every Friday to train the
kids!
RCMP Girls Run for Fun Program starts on April 26th, Tuesdays and Fridays from 4pm to 5:15pm at
Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park. This is an awesome program for girls ages 10 to 15 years to connect
with some great role models and learn about healthy lifestyles. Please see us for registration forms.
PACNEWS
Regular PAC meetings are held the second Monday of the month after school. Meet in the lobby
at 2:45. Child minding is provided. We need parent and guardian involvement in order to continue
events such as Fruit and Veggies day, family dances and special hot lunches.
A Vesey seed catalogue should have come home with your child. 50% of proceeds from sales will
go to the PAC to help pay for computers, guitars, playground equipment and other projects for
Harwin School. Please return orders by the morning of April 21st. No late orders will be
accepted. We are planning a major fundraising/family fun event in May. We need volunteers to
make this event happen; please contact harwinpac@gmail.com for information or to get involved.

Spring has sprung and we are gearing up for the end of the school year. Please keep an eye out
for special permission forms that will start going home here in the near future.
Goals and Dreams Hockey
We want to send a huge shout out to our Goals and Dreams hockey team for another awesome
season of hockey. They did especially well at the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Cup that was held on
April 6, 2016. We want to send special congratulations out to Austin Peacock for his shut out
game of 5-0 for Harwin. You all worked hard this season Harwin is super proud of you all.

Canadian Cancer Society Daffodil Campaign 2016
During the month of April, our school is celebrating daffodil month. You can buy a
pin to help the Canadian Cancer Society to send children living with cancer to
Camp Goodtimes this summer. Camp Goodtimes is a place where everyone has a
cancer experience, and can be themselves. Please help us give every child an
empowering, unforgettable cam experience. Pins are available at the office.
