Golowan – The Never Ending Story
After the events of the past few months, which have brought the whole community together and shown
how important Golowan is to the people of Penzance, it is both a pleasure and a privilege, as custodians
of a proud tradition, to welcome one and all to the 2016 Golowan Festival.
Although Penzance Town Council remains a valued and vital partner, 2016 is the year that Golowan
effectively “came back to the community” and Golowan Festival Community Interest Company is the
organisation charged with co-ordinating the wealth of community support and goodwill to deliver
another outstanding celebration of the spirit and joy of this wonderful midsummer festival.
With the support of hundreds of volunteers and sponsors, Truro & Penwith College, Aspects Holidays,
Coodes Solicitors, Penzance Chamber of Commerce and the Penzance and District Tourism Association,
all the ‘old favourite’ elements of Golowan will be back as Mazey Day sees the town thronged with
crowds, colour, greenery, bustling market stalls and the magic of five parades featuring schools and
community organisations, huge images and soul-stirring music. Around the town musicians, impromptu,
acoustic and plugged-in, will ensure Penzance reverberates with rhythm while in Morrab Gardens a soft
play area for children will combine with sweet music from the bandstand to offer both a rest for tired feet
and a delight for the ears. Greenmarket car park - transformed into Festival Square for the day - will host
enticing food stalls and non-stop music on the Folk Stage. On Market Jew Street the Mock Mayor will join
the Town Mayor to share the delights of the parades with the thousands of visitors and locals who fill the
streets.
On Sunday most of the action moves down to the harbour area when Quay Fair Day - which can trace its
history back to the twelfth century - sees the quayside packed with stalls, music and entertainment. The
Quay Fairground will be open throughout the weekend and nearby Kids on the Prom will again furnish a
host of stimulating activities for children. Penzance has a wealth of young, local musical talent and once
again in Penlee Park, Notes on the Green will see them delighting an appreciative crowd.
In 2016 there will be something for everyone and all ages will once again have the chance to enjoy the
magic of this very special festival, Penzance’s very own Golowan! We are delighted to announce that at
the 2016 What’s on Cornwall Awards the Golowan Festival won the award for Best Family Event! The
award was accepted on behalf of the Golowan team, the amazing Golowan volunteers, the festival
sponsors and the people of Penzance.
Enjoy!

Lost children
Golowan can become very busy, and we would
ask that parents/carers take care to keep their
children close. In the event that your child is lost,
we have made safe provision to care for them
until they are collected by a parent/carer. We work
closely with the local policing team to ensure the
safety of lost children and to facilitate a quick and
safe return to their parents. Children under the
age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all
times.

Golowan remains one of the greatest community festivals
in the country. There can be no better illustration of this
than the tremendous support we received last year when
the future of the festival was under threat. Well over
1000 of you joined the “Save Golowan” Facebook group
which has now rebranded as Independent Supporters of
Golowan.

Golowan is big, and benefits local businesses to the tune
of over £1 million, but to do this it costs £80,000 a year to
run. We have been grateful over the years for the support
of the Friends of Golowan fundraising organisation. Now
that the festival is back in the hands of the community, over the next few years as funding
from Penzance Town Council is reduced, the Friends of Golowan will become more
important.
We aim to build the Friends from its current base into a major source of funds for the
festival, and will be organising fundraising events year-round to support Golowan. The
core of the organisation though will remain its membership and we would be really
grateful if you would consider joining us, as an individual or an organisation.
To join, look out for flyers around town during the festival, or find the membership form
via the “Friends” page on the festival website www.golowanfestival.org . Keep an eye on
the Independent Supporters of Golowan Facebook group – join it if you haven’t already
– to keep up to date with news on Friends of Golowan events.
It’s our festival – let’s help it thrive!

food on sale. Don’t forget to support the
charities and voluntary groups and to visit
our very own Golowan stall this year in the
empty shop next to the Cornish Café and
opposite the Vault in Market Place, kindly
donated by the shop owner and generously
sponsored by Penzance and District
Tourism Association.
We are continuing the tradition of the
Golowan Markets on Mazey Day (Saturday
25 June) and Quay Fair Day (Sunday 26
June). This year many of our regular traders,
charities and caterers are returning as well
as some who are joining us for the very first
time. On Mazey Day there will be stalls
selling goods of all kinds lining Market Jew
Street and also a few in Causewayhead and
Chapel Street. Greenmarket Car Park will
become Festival Square for the day and
will host the ever popular folk stage. The
square will also be a place to relax and
enjoy a meal from a variety of caterers –
sample Cornish, Thai, Mexican and much
more. On Quay Fair Day the market will be
located on the Quayside.
Volunteers
Make a real difference to Golowan in 2016. If you have a
few hours to spare between Friday 17th June and Sunday
26th June then get in touch. There are lots of things to
do: stewarding the processions, collecting donations,
helping with the road closures, giving out water during the
processions, running the Golowan stall, and more…………..
About 120 volunteers every year ensure Golowan is a great
success.
So get in touch at golowan@hotmail.co.uk or phone 01736
369686 and be part of the biggest and best community
event in the south-west.
Two hours of your time makes a big difference and as a
thank you every volunteer receives a Golowan T-shirt and
refreshments!
Enjoy browsing the stalls and sampling the
