In 1910, that dream became a music festival that made history and changed the lives of two unsuspecting middle school time travelers forever. Take a trip back to the time before Instagram and ear buds when friendship could build a bridge to freedom. This play was especially written for middle schoolers and their families by Alliance Playwright in Residence, Pearl Cleage, in her first show for young audiences. Pearl is an Atlanta-based playwright and novelist. Her plays include The Nacirema Society, Flyin’ West, Blues for an Alabama Sky, Bourbon at the Border, and A Song for Coretta. She has written eight novels, including "What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day," which was an Oprah Book Club selection and spent nine weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Pearl and her husband, writer Zaron W. Burnett, Jr., collaborated on the award-winning performance series Live at Club Zebra! for 10 years. In 1973, Pearl was a speechwriter for the Maynard Jackson campaign and later served as his first press secretary. Member: The Dramatists Guild. Manga traces the evolution of these dances from the marketplaces of the Congo, to the slave ships bound for the Caribbean, to the plantations of the American South, and the nightclubs of the urban North. Students discover how Africans absorbed elements of other cultures along the way and transformed them into new dance styles that have left an indelible mark on American culture.
