It all began at the Shabbat Service. The energy was palpable- who knew that Jewish Bluegrass music was going to be so exciting? Saturday’s Lunch ’n’ Learn was not only soulful, but rocking. Then came Saturday evening’s Second Annual Chai Society Dinner when we honored and inducted new members Mike & Sheryl Bauer, Dave Cornfeld, Jill Crane, Cookie (z”l) & Ed Epstein, Josh Essman, Ron Gieseke and Steven Toybes. When Nefesh Mountain took the stage to provide the evening’s entertainment, everyone was on their feet and moving to the music. To top it all off the entire community was invited to enjoy the Nefesh Mountain outdoor concert at UH on Sunday following the Youth Group sponsored 5K race to raise funds to Save a Child’s Heart. Leslie Yoffie Shabbat services, Lunch ‘n’ Learn, Chai Society Dinner, 5K race, Nefesh Mountain Concert. ALL THESE ACTIVITIES IN ONE WEEKEND! I point out all of these events so that you can see the vast array of activities happening at your congregation. Attending Shabbat services may not be on the top of your list, but perhaps you love to run, listen to music or sit outdoors and just relax. Certainly no one can argue with having delicious food available that you didn’t have to cook yourself. There are so many different ways that you can make your own connection with our congregation, I promise you that it will be well worth your effort! If you can’t find something that appeals to you that we already offer, contact me at president@unitedhebrew.org and I will personally figure something out for you. (Caveat: That’s my new campaign slogan!) “My yesterdays are disappearing, and my tomorrows are uncertain, so what do I live for? I live for each day. June 2016 3 Clergy Reflections June is always a great threshold month on our calendar. Graduations, weddings, reunions, annual events and festivals abound. What is also so exciting about June is how all those events allow us to celebrate our past achievements and, at the same time, create new memories. Summer camp and activities for families, weather that invites us to enjoy the outdoors (arts festivals and farmers’ markets etc) all provide us with a tonic from the hectic pursuits that the “academic season” provides. Our synagogue, like many, appear to follow several calendars at once; the Jewish lunar calendar with its observances and holidays, the academic calendar parallel to the secular academic calendars and our fiscal calendar all tend to predict a certain lull in our scheduling. Upon closer examination, one will find that our doors are not closed with any more frequency and our activities are not curtailed in favor of those “lazy days.” Rather, we move into a new phase of activities that allow us to refresh, renew and reintroduce ourselves to our congregational family. Leviticus, Chapter 25 introduces us to sabbatical and jubilee years in which we allow the land to rest and we do not “reap from the land” in observance of that year. While we engage is a form of retreat from agricultural activities the land, itself, is not resting but rather recharging. We, in kind, take that time to recharge and prepare for the rigors of the agricultural life the year following its observance. As you leaf through the pages of this publication, please take note of ALL the activities and events between June and August. You can see that we are anything but dormant at this time and we invite you to participate in all that we have to offer. This summer will also give you an opportunity to try something new at UH. Drop by and just hang out. The halls are active day and night and you are sure to see someone you know (or should know). Cantor Ronald D. Eichaker June 24-26 At Soldier’s Memorial in Downtown St. Louis Pride Parade Sunday, June 26, 12:00 p.m. June is Pride Month for the LGBT community. United Hebrew Congregation will be joining with other St. Louis Jewish organizations and congregations to participate in St. Louis PrideFest to demonstrate Jewish support for diversity and inclusion! Volunteers and Parade Marchers Needed! Walk in the Parade: Join us in the St. Louis Pride Parade on Sunday, June 26. On Sunday at noon, we’ll be walking together to demonstrate that our communities are open to all who wish to join us. The parade is about a mile long and is considered “family friendly.” This is a fun activity to do with your kids. To sign up to walk with UH and the St. Louis Jewish Community, please contact Cori Neidenberg at 314-434-3404 or cneidenberg@unitedhebrew.org. We’ll send more details as the event nears as to where and when to meet. Staff the Jewish Community Booth at PrideFest: We need people to staff the booth on BOTH Saturday and Sunday. We’ll have information about Jewish organizations where members of the LGBT community can find a welcoming environment. We’d like for 3-4 people to work together for 2.5 hour shifts. If you would like to volunteer to work at the “Jewish Community of St. Louis” booth at some time during the weekend, please visit www.unitedhebrew.org Mazel Tov to our B’nai Mitzvah As for me, I will be observing my first three-month sabbatical. I fully intend to refresh myself physically and spiritually, renew my passions that have allowed me to move our congregation forward, reintroduce myself to my own family while developing ways for our congregational family to continue to engage with one another through various media. I will not be marking time in one place by any stretch of the imagination. I will, however, recharge my batteries so I can help to supercharge an already welloiled machine. To all, a healthy, active, meaningful, successful and blessed summer season! 4 June 2016 Aidan Kade Rudman June 4, 2016 10:30 a.m. Maya Feldman June 25, 2016 10:30 a.m. United Hebrew Congregation Golf Tournament August 22, 2016 Persimmon Woods Golf Club 6401 Weldon Spring Road, 63304 United Hebrew Golf Tournament August 22, 2016 Shotgun Start 9:30 a.m. Proceeds to benefit UH Technology Upgrades Contact Amy Stone with questions. 314-469-0700 Please join us for a day of golf, food and spirits at one of St. Louis’ premier golf courses. We will be discussing the book My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout. Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself: keenly observant, deeply human, and truly unforgettable. The next book we will be discussing on July 7 at 1:30 p.m. will be The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman. You can join us for just one session if you like a particular book or come to all of the sessions. There is no long-term commitment necessary. So that we know how many people to expect, RSVP to April at ahickman@unitedhebrew.org. Wellness and Fitness Class Join us on Monday, June 6 at 2:00 p.m. for an exciting and fun 45 minute to 1 hour workshop with Joyce Hochberg, who will lead an EASY and safe chair exercise routine to fun upbeat music. Joyce, an experienced, certified dance/ exercise instructor, believes in the total body conditioning approach to exercise and fitness. Chair exercises will include arm movements, marching in place and relaxing stretching. Exercising in a chair is safe with less risk of losing one’s balance. No experience is necessary, just come in comfortable, easy moving clothes and closed toe shoes. As always, please check with your physician before exercising. There will be light snacks and refreshments following the exercise. RSVP by Friday, April 29 to April Hickman at 314-434-3404 or ahickman@unitedhebrew.org. Matinee Film Series: Radio Days Join us on Wednesday, June 8 at 12 noon in the Messing Auditorium for the next program in our Matinee Film Series for the film Radio Days, a 1987 comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen, who also narrates. The film looks back on an American family's life during the Golden Age of Radio using both music and memories to tell the story. It stars an ensemble cast. Even though Joe's Jewish- 6 June 2016 American family lives modestly in Rockaway Beach, each member at one point during the film finds in radio shows an escape from reality through the gossip of celebrities, sports legends of the day, game shows, and crooners, with the majority of the stories taking place in the glitz and glamour of Manhattan. Lunch, preceding the film, will include grilled chicken, roasted vegetables, rice, green salad, dessert and popcorn. Cost is $7 for UH members and $8 for non-members. Please note, beginning in July the cost for the movie and lunch will rise to $9 for members and $10 for non-members to cover the increasing cost of putting on the programs. To RSVP, send a check payable to United Hebrew Congregation, Attn: April, 13788 Conway Road, St. Louis, MO 63141, by Monday, May 9. For more information, call April at 314-434-3404. June 2016 7 Youth Engagement The Duck Pond NFTY:UHTYG is excited to announce the 2016-2017 Board: President Programming Vice President Programming Vice President Social Action Vice President Religious and Cultural Vice President TYG Membership Vice President JYG Membership Vice President Fundraising Vice President Jake Flom Megan Rubenstein Dani Gottleib Marni Frischer Sam Thomas Abbie Pines Zach Poscover Josh Hylan Elections are an opportunity for learning and growth. Both the winners and losers of an election have a learning experience from resiliency to following through on pledges made. At NFTY:UHTYG, the youth group decided to approach elections in a way to elect the most qualified candidate while respecting the efforts and good will of all candidates. The solution was to have a small group of youth group ‘elders’ interview candidates and devise a slate to be voted on by the entire youth group. The slate committee this year was comprised of five youth groupers and two adults. After a thoughtful and vigorous debate, the slate committee proposed a board that was approved by the youth membership. Although I say every year, (with a smile) this is not the board I would have chosen, the youth group gives this important decision a serious examination to produce the best board makeup to have the best year ahead. Truly, the 2016-2017 board looks to be amazing. From a diversity of grades (Seniors, Juniors & Sophomores) and four different high schools, the youth group is looking at innovative approaches to bring more members to more types of programs in the next year. Speaking of elections, United Hebrew has a new member of the 2016-2017 NFTY Missouri Valley Regional Board. We are ecstatic to report Alex Dubinsky will be serving as the Social Action Vice President. Now that June is upon us, we are excited for amazing adventures as 100+ United Hebrew-ites head to Israel and Jewish Summer Camps including GUCI, Sabra, 6 Points Sports Academy, Camp Ben Frankel, and more! United Hebrew clergy and staff will be heading to a few of the camps this Summer. Keep an eye out, say hi and enjoy the swag (if you have not told Jessy which Jewish Overnight camp you will be attending, give her a call or send an email (jnelson@unitedhebrew.org), so you can be on the swag list). 8 June 2016 The Save A Child’s Heart 5k and 1 mile fun run was a tremendous success. A great thank you to runners, walkers, volunteers and sponsors of the race: The Fountains of West County, Strong Human Fitness, Baked T's, Insurance Advisors of St. Louis, Ted Gottlieb Realtor, Warner Communications and JonathanGaxiolaFitness.com. With all of your support and participation, I will be able to personally deliver a check of $3500 to the Save A Child’s Heart facility in June along with the . . . Sixth St. Louis Israel Bound Trip! I will be heading to Israel for three weeks, leading 25 high schoolers from UH, SE, TI, B’nai Amoona and Kol Rinah along with four other staff members. We will be traveling from North to South and East to West, hitting the whole of Israel. Our trip goals include developing personal connections to the idea of Jewish people, understanding the Jew who chooses Judaism in a secular Jewish environment, exploring what it means to be a Jewish American, connecting with young Israelis and having personal growth from the physical, intellectual and spiritual challenges of the trip. Rising sophomores, mark your calendar, next Summer – Israel! They are the proud parents of Brian, Kevin, and Lindsey. All three of their children attended religious school, became b’nai mitzvah at UH, and are now featured on “the wall” as confirmands. for which he edited The Tax Lawyer; founding member and Regent of the American College of Tax Counsel; Fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel; and life member of the American Law Institute. He was awarded Washington University’s Distinguished Law Alumni Award. This fall, the National Association of Estate Planners will induct Dave into the Estate Planning Hall of Fame. Not being from St. Louis they wanted to find a place within our community, which they ultimately found in a chavurah. That chavurah and United Hebrew became their St. Louis family. Even today, years later, the members of their chavurah are the people who can still be found around their dining room table during holidays. You will find Dave at United Hebrew every Friday evening, enjoying the nosh and Shabbat services. United Hebrew means more to Dave than any honor. Mike and Sheryl are the type of individuals that give 100% effort to whatever they do. They are constant fixtures around the synagogue, typically found working together. They wanted their children to know how important the temple is to them and believed that giving back was something they could do together as a family. Jill Crane is a 4th generation member of United Hebrew and was a member of the second class to graduate from our early childhood center. She attended our religious school, became a bat mitzvah at UH, and her confirmation picture is on the wall. She is also an alumnus of our Midwest Reform Jewish camp, Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI). Jill is married to Dr. Ben Crane and together they have three boys, Maxwell, 8, Carson, 6, and Parker, 4. In fact, the Bauer family has been tremendously active in service to our community! Sheryl and daughter Lindsey were part of the National Charity League. Mike, Brian, and Kevin were involved with Scouting and both boys achieved the rank of Eagle Scouts. At United Hebrew, Sheryl has chaired many committees, from Community Action, Synaplex, and Synagogue Community, to serving on the Membership Committee, co-chairing Mitzvah Day and chairing many an ad book for UH events. Mike has been a member of the Building Committee, our UH Brotherhood, and he is a member of our UH Kitchen Crew, helping to prepare our weekly Shabbat Nosh. Most recently Mike was part of a team that taught a cooking class for our Chai School students. Sheryl served on the UH Board of Trustees for 16 years, having served as both vice president and assistant treasurer. Mike is currently a member of the Board of Trustees. Sheryl and Mike Bauer live by the motto, “see a need, fill a need.” If something needs doing, they get it done! We are so blessed to have Mike and Sheryl as part of our United Hebrew family. Dave Cornfeld, 94, joined UH when he married Martha (UH Confirmation Class of 1937) 73 years ago. For 25 years he was a member of the Board of Trustees, including serving ten years as treasurer and vice president. (During his son’s wedding, Rabbi Grollman said Dave was the most important member of UH because he was treasurer!) Dave also served as the Congregation’s attorney until handing the position over to his son, Rick. Dave has been a constant fixture on the UH Scroll of Honor. Within the St. Louis community, Dave has served on the board and many committees of the Jewish Federation, on the board and as legal counsel for the Jewish Center for the Aged, and as general counsel of the St. Louis Community Foundation (a one hundred-year old philanthropic body that promotes local charitable giving). Rarely was there a dinner held by a Jewish organization that Dave and Martha didn’t attend. Professionally, Dave is considered the dean of St. Louis tax and estate lawyers. He was vice-chair of the American Bar Association’s Tax Section, 10 June 2016 Jill served as president of our Saul Spielberg Early Childhood Center. She was the inspiration behind the beautiful decorations for the Installation dinner honoring Rabbi Rosenberg. Jill and Ben chaired last year’s Chai Society Gala for United Hebrew. She is also an active member of the National Council of Jewish Women and is involved in the Jewish Federation. While Jill has had several part-time adventures since her career in consulting, her family and volunteer work are her greatest passions. Jill currently serves on the board of the Deutsch Early Childhood Center and just completed a three year term on the UH Board of Trustees. She serves as teacher appreciation chair at Spoede Elementary School. Jill is very selective about the volunteer opportunities she participates in, as her family is her main priority. We are truly fortunate that UH is one of the places she gives of her time. Rarely can so much grace be found in a woman of Jill’s young age, however a quick conversation with Jill will lead you to just this conclusion. Ed and the late Cookie Epstein have been valued members of United Hebrew Congregation for more than half a century. During that time, both have served in many leadership positions, including chairmanship of the Temple Gala, Board of Trustees, Sisterhood and Brotherhood, both were instrumental in the building of our current sanctuary and religious school. They have donated their time and tzedakah to their beloved United Hebrew home. Cookie and Ed were married for 65 years and were great partners in life. They were devoted to their family and took great pride in their family’s place in United Hebrew, their beloved congregation. They took special delight when the generations of their family gathered in “their section” of seats in the Millstone Sanctuary during the High Holy Days. Melanie Epstein Marks, their granddaughter states, “I have fond memories of sitting with my grandparents, great-grandmothers, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins at the beautiful temple on Skinker for Shabbat United Hebrew Congregation Chai Society Honorees and High Holy Days. We then moved to "our row " in the sanctuary on Conway, in which Cookie and Ed were instrumental in building. It was a great source of pride for my grandparents to see their row become more and more full as their family grew.” It is clear that Cookie and Ed have instilled a love of both Judaism and United Hebrew in their many generations of family. Josh Essman is a proud third generation member of United Hebrew. He is the son of Bruce Essman and Carla Siegfried. Josh is currently a junior at Lafayette High School. As an active member of BBYO Josh has enjoyed the friendships he has made and his varied experiences. Josh is a proud alum of our beloved Saul Spielberg Early Childhood Center. He then “graduated” into our Louis and Mary Millstone Religious School and our Rabbi Jerome W. Grollman Hebrew School, and was confirmed in 2015. When asked, Josh said, “I made it all the way through!” Josh has been a teen assistant in our religious and Hebrew schools since 8th grade. The teacher for which Josh served as a madrichim stated the following about him, “You are exactly what we hope for in our students. First to learn to say the blessings and then to go out in the world and be the blessing.” One might say that Josh is not your typical 17-year old. While many teens are active in their congregations, for the past three years, on Friday evenings when other teens are at the movies, Josh has been working in the UH kitchen. One can also find Josh in the UH kitchen on Saturdays, helping to prepare for b’nai mitzvah luncheons, as well as creating menus and cooking for our “Dinner and a Movie” series. When asked what brought a 13 year old to work in the kitchen, his answer was simple and direct, “My teacher, Debra Grund, our Kitchen Manager, taught an elective class in Chai School and I liked the experience. Debra happened to mention, off hand, that kids could show up on Friday to help. I took her up on her offer.” It also helps that he is passionate about cooking. “The sense of community between all of us who work in the kitchen is pretty special. I enjoy working with everyone back there. It’s pretty fun and that’s why I’ve kept coming back all of these years.” Tonight is a double mitzvah for Josh, as it is his junior Prom. We are honored that he chose to spend his evening with us. When Ron and Jeanne Gieseke attended a “Tot Shabbat” in 1986 at United Hebrew with their one-year-old daughter, they were touched by what they described as “UH’s welcoming spirit”. They knew then that UH would become their family congregational home. Both Ron and Jeanne became actively involved at United Hebrew. Their daughters, Rachel, Pamela and Sarah were educated, became b’not mitzvah and were confirmed at UH. Ron’s leadership at United Hebrew began with his involvement with New Generations in 1994 and in 1996 he was elected to the Board of Trustees. In 1998, Ron was asked to chair the Building Committee, which he guided through an important religious school and preschool remodeling. www.unitedhebrew.org Ron smiles as he thinks about his time spent on the board and more specifically when he thinks about the “Goldfish Affair”. Ron felt compelled to draft a resolution to ban giving out live goldfish as prizes during the Purim Carnival as most goldfish never made it out of the building alive. The resolution did not pass that year, however, the congregation did eventually end its affair with the goldfish! Ron served with distinction in many capacities on the Executive Committee and is proud that he was the first “Jew by Choice” to be elected as president of United Hebrew. As president, he led the Torah Alive project which commissioned the first Sefer Torah entirely written by a female scribe. When Ron was president he championed the cause of “audacious hospitality” before it became a buzzword in the Reform Movement. He supported our first “living room conversations” and truly encouraged the congregation to think outside of the box with regard to what it meant to be a warm and welcoming community. Ron remains an active member of the UH Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees and a valued and trusted advisor to many presidents who have succeeded him. Steven Toybes is a lifelong member of United Hebrew Congregation. He went to religious school through confirmation at UH! His children, Sara and Seth are 5th generation members of UH and his greatgrandparents were married by Rabbi Messing. Steven has served United Hebrew in numerous capacities. With his beautiful voice he has entertained us as a cast member in many temple shows, he has served on the adult education committee, has been a long time member of Brotherhood in addition to serving as its president. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees, served as secretary of the congregation and finally as our president. While serving as president of the congregation, he made a huge effort to attend each and every committee meeting held at UH to get a real pulse of the community. By doing so, he was able to form relationships with many more congregants in addition to showing his support. But, perhaps most importantly Steven was a teacher in our religious school, and he taught our confirmation class for nine years. Steven has been actively involved in the Jewish community in agencies including the Jewish Federation and the CAJE Board of Trustees, most recently serving as vice president. “United Hebrew means home to me because my family has always belonged here. My mother’s family came to UH, and I remember very clearly Rabbi Thurman officiating at my bar mitzvah. UH has always been the standard of what a Reform congregation was and should be. I take a great deal of pride in being a part of such a storied institution. It also gives me a sense of pride that there is such a close connection to the Masonic Organization. Rabbi Thurman’s (who was a Grand Chaplin) affiliation with President Truman was through their masonic connection. In addition, past president Judge Aronson and I both served as a Grand Master of the Masons.” June 2016 11 Chai Society Dinner at United Hebrew Remember Unique Treasures For Gifts of All Occasions! Susan Allison and Sherilyn Krell The United Hebrew Scroll of Honor was established to honor and recognize individuals and families who voluntarily increase their annual commitment above and beyond the Basic Annual Commitment Level. This strengthens our ability to meet the needs of our congregants while preserving the financial health of the congregation. We invite you to consider becoming a Scroll of Honor participant or renewing your pledge at one of the four levels listed below. Thank you for your generous support. The Jewish Food Pantry Needs Your Help!
