bears a later drawing showing two cloaked

Ink on laid paper, sheet sizes to 6 1/2 x 9 5/16
in. (16.0 x 23.8 cm), framed.
Condition: Creasing, toning, scattered
staining, losses to edges of the sheets that
do not affect the images, sheets mounted to
secondary paper support, hinged at top edges
of the reverse to the backing mats.
N.B. These drawings were likely made after
the Thomas Piroli engravings of Flaxman’s
drawings of Dante’s Divine Comedy, published
as “Compositions from The Hell, Purgatory,
and Paradise of Dante Alighieri” by Longman,
Hurst, Rees, and Orme, London, in 1807.
Flaxman’s original drawings for Divine Comedy
were made in black chalk and are part of the
collection of the Houghton Library at Harvard
University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

panel with damage to the corners.
Provenance: Charlotte-Auguste-Mathilde,
Queen of Wurttemberg (1766-1828); through
to and possibly purchased by Henry M.
Shepherd, 1859; by descent to Perry M. and
Eleanor Shepherd, Geneva, New York, 1940s;
by descent to Deborah Shepherd Petri,
Framingham, Massachusetts; by descent to
the current owner.
This work has descended in several
generations of the Shepherd family and may
have been acquired by Judge Henry Martyn
Shepard on a European grand tour in 1859.
The family was located in Geneva, New York.

N.B. William Bradford, one of the preeminent
Marine painters of the 19th century, was
born and raised near the harbor town of New
Bedford, Massachusetts. Against the wishes
of his strict Quaker parents, he pursued a
career in painting. Initially self-taught, Bradford
began to study with Dutch painter Albert Van
Beest in the late 1850s, and the two artists
frequently collaborated.
Starting in 1861, Bradford made a series of
trips to Labrador and the Arctic, where he
was profoundly influenced by the bright light
and vivid colors of the area. By 1868 Bradford
had managed seven trips to the Arctic. His
paintings of that region contain rich detail in
sailing vessels and fishermen while, at the
same time, capture the expressiveness of
the clouds, water, and ice formations. This
rich scenery and atmospheric light remained
a constant source of inspiration for Bradford
throughout his career.

John Brooks Fenno; through to the current
owner by family descent.
N.B. The portrait is accompanied by an
expert opinion written by Theodore E.
Stebbins, Jr., dated July 24, 2013, confirming
the attribution to John Singleton Copley and
suggesting the date of the mid-1760s, when,
by various commissions, Copley painted a
small group of portraits of mature, handsome
women in Boston. Dr. Stebbins writes that the
Gerrishes were well-known patrons of Copley.
The portrait of Rebecca Dudley Gerrish is
clearly a pendant to one of her husband,
Benjamin Gerrish, painted probably five years
after hers. The Benjamin Gerrish portrait
descended in the Gerrish family and was listed
and reproduced in the work of several Copley
scholars, including the catalogue raisonné of
the artist (Jules Prown, 1966, no 313).
Mrs. Gerrish’s portrait, which descended in the
Dudley line, had not been seen by mid-20th
century scholars, but was listed in Prown’s
catalogue raisonné among the attributed
pictures, based on its mention in a 1913
history of the family of Captain John Gerrish
by Arthur Eaton.
John Singleton Copley is one of the most
beloved American artists. Largely self taught,
Copley was a sought-after portrait painter
among the elite in colonial Boston. He painted
likenesses with objective accuracy and
powerful insight. He could masterfully convey
every detail of his sitter’s costume, making
palpable the sheen of satin, the delicacy of
lace, the richness of damask and pearls, and
could capture reflections in highly polished
wood. More importantly Copley used these
elements to reinforce the sense of the sitter’s
character. The combined effect was such that
John Adams wrote of Copley’s portraits
“...you can scarcely help discoursing with
them, asking questions and receiving
answers.” 1
However, a man of ambition and intellect,
Copley was not content to remain a provincial
portrait painter. Portraiture, while lucrative, in
his view lay closer to craft than high art. Nor
did he feel that colonial Americans had great
appreciation for the fine arts. Copley aspired
to the elevated role of History Painter, and in
Europe he saw the opportunity to learn from
the Old Masters and to broaden his subject
matter for more sophisticated audiences.
Copley left Boston for England in 1774 to
pursue his career (and, some say, to avoid the
instability of the political situation). He found
continued success abroad, and he never
returned to America.

as recorded in Icons of the West, Frederic
Remington’s Sculpture by Michael D.
Greenbaum, cast number 36 has a ledger
date of 6/1/[19]14 and was originally sold
by Tiffany & Company, New York, to a
private collector. The sculpture was sold
later by Sotheby Parke-Bernet, Los Angeles,
on October 28, 1974, again to a private
collector. Remington created the bust in 1906.
According to Roman Bronze Works ledgers,
twenty castings were made around the same
time and sold within four years. Forty more
castings were made shortly after the artist’s
death, of which this is one.1

5, 1990, in which Dr. Geske describes the
painting as having some of the best “handling”
he has seen in some time, possessing “...the
extraordinary kinetic brushwork which is the
true hallmark of the artist.” Dr. Geske goes
on to explain that he assigned the work to
Category II not because he found it lacking
in any aesthetic aspect but because he was
unable to establish a complete provenance
back to the artist. There is also a copy of an
unattributed and undated ledger page affixed
to the frame that suggests the title The Trout
Stream and which lists the owner as Sidney D.

N.B. Native Hawaiian artist David Howard
Hitchcock was born at Hilo in 1861. His earliest
formal training was under Jules Tavernier, who
traveled to Hilo in 1885 with fellow landscape
painter Joseph Strong (1852-1899). Hitchcock
joined the two artists on a sketching expedition
to Kilauea volcano, which instilled in the young
Hitchcock a love of painting as well as a special
attachment to the forms and varied light qualities
of volcanoes.
In fact Hitchcock and Tavernier, along with
Charles Furneaux (1835-1913), became known
locally as the “Volcano School.”
Tavernier became Hitchcock’s life-long mentor
and encouraged him to pursue formal training,
both at the California School of Design and at the
Académie Julian in Paris. Hitchcock was said to
be the first Hawaii-born painter to receive formal
art training in Paris. After his academic training,
Hitchcock returned to Hawaii and continued
to paint the landscape, gaining popularity and
critical acclaim for his ability to capture the effects
of tropical light. He had studios in Hilo and later
Honolulu, and he traveled to and painted all
the islands. He also played a major role in the
development of the artistic community of Hawaii,
helping found the Kilohana Art League and the
Honolulu Art Society.

N.B. According to documents accompanying
the lot, Colt Biting His Rump was cast from
the artist’s plaster c. 1972 by David Ratner of
Museum Pieces, Inc., the royalties for the sale
of which would benefit the A.H. Huntington
Prize fund of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe
Art Club, Inc., New York. This bronze was
one of the last, if not the last, sculpture for
the Museum Pieces series and was a very
limited edition. The accompanying documents
include a copy of a letter/contract to the
artist from Sally Swan Carr, president of the
art club, and countersigned by the artist,
requesting permission for David Ratner to pick
up the plaster from the Roman Bronze Works
foundry, where it was stored. In 1976 the
Club mounted an exhibit in the Union Carbide
Headquarters on Park Avenue in New York.
Among the works offered was Colt Biting His
Rump, one of the three casts that the Club
had made.

N.B. Still life and impressionist landscape
painter Emil Carlsen was born in Copenhagen,
Denmark, and first studied architecture at
the Danish Royal Academy. At the age of
nineteen, he left Denmark for the United
States, working as an architectural draftsman
and assistant to the Danish marine painter
Laurits B. Holst in Chicago. In 1875, he
traveled to Paris to paint and study, immersing
himself in the still life paintings of Jean Baptiste
Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) which would
greatly inspire his own work. Back in the U.S.
he lived in New York and Boston, befriending
fellow painters such as John Francis Murphy
and Childe Hassam, linking him to some of
the best known American Impressionists.
From 1884 to 1886, Carlsen returned to Paris,
where his palette lightened. In 1887 he was
called to direct the School of Design in San
Francisco, where he shared a studio with
Arthur Matthews.
In the end Carlsen was not happy in California,
noting a dearth of opportunities for sales
and exhibitions, and in 1891 he returned
permanently to the East Coast, living in New
York and Connecticut. Dogged by poverty
in his early years, Carlsen later enjoyed
great financial success. He exhibited widely
at the best venues of his day, and he was
awarded many prizes, including gold medals
at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine
Arts and the National Academy of Design.
He was made a full member of the National
Academy in 1906. Carlsen painted many
landscapes from his residence in Falls Village,
Connecticut, and along the coast of Ogunquit,
Maine. Emil Carlsen showed at the Macbeth
Gallery in New York from 1911 to 1932,
including several solo shows, as well as group
shows with Childe Hassam, Frederick Carl
Frieseke, Theodore Robinson, Willard LeRoy
Metcalf, and J. Alden Weir.

N.B. Sunlight in the Studio was exhibited at
the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893
and is listed in the Fine Art exhibition checklist
as cat. no. 1122 (Lent by Charles D. Miller,
Jersey City). In a letter regarding this painting,
Wiles scholar Geoffrey Fleming noted that
the work had been described in detail in The
Nation when it was first exhibited at the winter
exhibition at the National Academy of Design
in December, 1888, and was subsequently
listed as having been exhibited at the World’s
Columbian Exposition in several other sources.
Wiles received a bronze medal at the World’s
Columbian Exposition, but research thus far
has not revealed which of his works was so
honored. Wiles showed six oil paintings at the
Exposition, among which was A Girl in Black,
lent by William Merritt Chase, and The Sonata,
lent by W.G. Evans of New York, the latter
being illustrated in the official exposition art
catalog, The Art Gallery Illustrated (p. 235).
The theme of a figure in an interior was
favored by Wiles. In Sunlight in the Studio,
golden light passes through the shaded
window and falls on the reclining figure and
on the accoutrements within the artist’s
studio; the oriental rug and vase, silver
samovar, handsome furnishings, as well as the
overstuffed artist’s portfolio. The model in this
painting was thought to be the artist’s wife,
but Geoffrey Fleming has noted that at the
time of this painting, May Wiles would have
been about to give birth (or just given birth) to
the couple’s only child, Gladys, so this may
not be accurate. However, the true subject of
the painting is revealed in its title.
Although portraiture was considered his forte,
Wiles also painted the hills and shores of Long
Island. In the late 1890s Wiles built a studio
and cottage on the shores at Peconic, and he
summered there regularly with his family. Here
he found painting the out-of-doors a pleasant
change from the bustle of portrait painting in
the city.
Irving Ramsey Wiles was born in Utica, New
York. He was introduced to painting by his
father, artist Lemuel Wiles (1826-1905), but
it was not until he studied at New York’s
Art Students League under James Carroll
Beckwith and William Merritt Chase that he
determined to make his father’s profession
his own. Chase became Wiles’s mentor, and
the two men remained lifelong friends. After
two years at the Art Students League (18791881), Wiles went on to Paris to study at the
Académie Julian, perhaps at the suggestion
of another of the League’s teachers, Thomas
Wilmer Dewing. In Paris in 1882, Wiles also
entered the atelier of Carolus-Duran, an
influential teacher who counted John Singer
Sargent among his pupils.

Like many of his late 19th-century
contemporaries, Wiles used the “new” vitality
of the Impressionist brush stroke and palette
to express the beauty of the world around
him. Not unlike Chase, Wiles was known for
his dexterous and energized portraits, which
often idealized his subjects by placing them
in elegant attire and settings. Wiles often
depicted his female subjects in white dresses.
When set outdoors, they were frequently
drenched in warm sunlight and dashed with
blue brushstrokes of shadow, a technique
regularly employed by Chase, as well as John
Singer Sargent and Frank Weston Benson.

N.B. Figure in White is a quintessential
example of Boston School painting, showing
a beautiful young woman at ease within a
handsomely appointed interior setting.
Frank Benson exhibited three oil paintings at
the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago
in 1893, in the prestigious, juried, fine arts
exhibition that brought together contemporary
works from around the world to hang in
the Palace of Fine Arts. Among Benson’s
works was one titled “Figure in White” which
appeared as item 175 in the catalog. No
dimensions were provided in the checklist,
but, given the label on the back of the frame,
it seems likely that the painting at hand could
indeed be the same “Figure in White.”
The model for this painting is said to be the
artist’s sister, Georgiana. Benson kept the
painting for his collection, and according to
Salem Library records, it hung in the dining
room of his house in Salem, Massachusetts.
Frank Benson had long-standing ties to the
Salem Public Library, where he served as a
Trustee from 1912 to his death in 1951. In
1957 the painting was given to the Trustees
of the Salem Public Library by the artist’s
children.
Frank Benson was born into a prominent
Salem family in 1862. He trained at the
Académie Julian in Paris, where his work was
greatly influenced by the contrasting light and
dark palettes of master artists Vermeer and
Velázquez. Upon returning stateside in 1885,
he and fellow painter Edmund Tarbell became
the leaders of the Boston School. Benson,
Tarbell, and Joseph De Camp all taught at
the Boston Museum School and influenced
generations of artists. They formed the Boston
nucleus of the Ten American Painters, which
was comprised of both New York and Bostonbased Impressionists. Benson exhibited with
The Ten between 1898 and 1919. Benson
enjoyed a very successful career—he worked
in an array of genres including portraiture,
plein air, interiors, and still-life—and is perhaps
best known for his portraits depicting his
wife and three children. He was fascinated
by the interplay of light and shadow and
repeatedly used their effects to achieve both
dramatic and aesthetically beautiful works. He
maintained a consistent style in oil paintings
throughout his career. An avid sportsman,
Benson later focused on sporting subjects for
his watercolors and etchings, but it is for his
figural works that he is best known.

N.B. The authorship of “Laughing Man” is
an interesting puzzle. For close to 100 years,
it has been attributed to Auguste Rodin.
However, the sculpture has been seen in a new
light following the research of Dr. Antoinette
LeNormand-Romain for the catalogue raisonné
of Rodin bronzes at the Musée Rodin in Paris
(2007) and for her book Fateful Encounter that
accompanied a traveling exhibition examining
the relationship of Rodin and Camille Claudel
in 2005.

LeNormand-Romain wrote that while at the
time of Rodin’s death plasters in his studio were
systematically ascribed to him, in fact several
examples confirm that some plasters had been
exchanged between the studios of Rodin and
Camille Claudel as part of the normal working
process, leading to misattribution. Some works
probably by Claudel were later signed as
Rodin, particularly when bronzes were being
cast from plasters to fulfill the large order from
Jules Mastbaum for the Rodin Museum in
Philadelphia in 1925-26.1 LeNormand-Romain
ascribed “Laughing Man” to Camille Claudel
in Rodin et le bronze: catalogue des oeuvres
conservées au Musée Rodin.2 It is interesting
to note that in an earlier catalogue raisonné
dedicated to the sculpture of Camille Claudel
(Paris and La Chapelle, 1990), the authors
specifically sited Rodin’s “Laughing Man” for its
great similarity to the signed Claudel sculpture
Tête de Rieuse (Cat. No. 23), establishing a link
between the two works.3

N.B. Mario Carreño was born in Havana, to
a family of ten children. A precocious child,
in 1922 as a nine year old, he won a drawing
competition sponsored by the newspaper El
Mundo. He gained entrance to Cuba’s San
Alejandro Academy at the age of twelve. Six
years later, in the face of volatile politics in
Cuba, he left for Madrid, where he met Pablo
Neruda and his intellectual circle. Neruda
would be a life-long friend and lasting influence
on the artist.
At the time of the Spanish Civil War, Carreño
went to Mexico, where he worked with the
great muralists of the period, including Diego
Rivera, David Siqueiros, and José Orozco.
This group provided inspiration and led
Carreño to explore subject matter from his
Latin American roots.
From 1937 to 1939 Carreño was in Paris
studying at the Académie Julian. He rubbed
shoulders with the avant-garde painters of
the period, including Picasso, and gained
recognition for his work. To escape World War
II, Carreño relocated to New York, where he
taught at the New School for Social Research
and showed with Perls Gallery. During this
decade he turned toward more abstract
painting, influenced by Mondrian, Pollock,
and Moholy-Nagy. He experimented with
geometric forms, though he never abandoned
the figurative tradition entirely. Over the years
his style varied between figurative, Cubist
abstraction, and Surrealism, as he combined
the influence of international art movements
with personal and Latin American themes.
He returned frequently to Cuba in the
1950s, but politics again intervened. As a
modern artist, he was considered a counterrevolutionary, his name was expunged from
Cuban art programs, and his works were
removed from public spaces. At the invitation
of Pablo Neruda, Carreño had made a visit
to Chile in 1948. He fell in love with Chile and
chose to live there permanently, becoming
a cultural leader in his adopted land. With
colleagues he founded the Universidad
Catolica’s School of Arts, taught, and created
public art works. He became a citizen of
Chile in 1969. He did return to Cuba in 1993,
when the National Museum organized a
retrospective exhibit of his work, and again in
1994 to sign prints for the Rene Portocarrero
Graphic Workshop in Havana.

exhibited in Michigan, Toronto, and Lyon,
France, as well as in a number of shows in
London. The piece was likely purchased
through Alice Simsar Gallery in Ann Arbor,
Michigan.

contemporary art in the world.

She sought the solitude of a place where she
was not known, and she found comfort in the
warm climate and beauty in the green-blue
waters of Bermuda.
During her two Bermuda trips O’Keeffe
executed a series of charcoal and pencil
drawings of banana blossoms and banyan
trees. This aspect of her work was not well
known. It was considered surprising that
O’Keeffe produced these drawings at a time
when it was supposed she was not working
at all. However, this series of drawings also
seems to fit a pattern in her oeuvre. After
times of personal crisis she would often turn
to drawing rather than painting to regain
her creative energy and focus. In a letter to
Rebecca Strand dated “Bermuda, 26 April
1934,” O’Keeffe mused about the drawings,
“I have been drawing some here—very dull
drawings—I get so interested in them it
quite amuses me.”1 In that same letter she
expresses her early thoughts of finding a
house in New Mexico, calling it the easiest
way for her to get back to work.

O’Keeffe would not visit Bermuda again after
1934, settling in New Mexico with its vast
open space and heat, where she would enter
a period of great creativity. However, Bermuda
appears to have offered the artist a timely
place of respite before the next phase of her
career.
In 1994, to commemorate the sixtieth
anniversary of O’Keeffe’s visit to the island,
The Masterworks Foundation organized
an exhibition of the Bermuda works at The
Bermuda National Gallery. Georgia O’Keeffe:
The Bermuda Respite gathered together many
of the fourteen drawings she created on the
island, including Banyan Trees with Palms.

Conditions of Sale
1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below
which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of
Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or
raise not commensurate with the value of such lot.
2. All property is sold “as is,” and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property,
and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship,
attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall
be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability.
3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer
shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have
sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. Any bidder that plans on spending in excess of $100,000 should make arrangements with the
accounting department at least five (5) days in advance of the sale, as a deposit may be required to participate.
4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a
monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale.
Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. If any property has not been
removed within three (3) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. (a) Skinner Inc., may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage
charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed within the three days, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. may place the merchandise in a subsequent
auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds
to the purchaser.
5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank authorization has
been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank.
The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment
methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases.
6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was
the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any
payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the
purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of
sale.
7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item.
8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and
overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered
species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities
is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots.
9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers
from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties can apply for a
Massachusetts exemption number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston.
10. A premium equal to 23% of the final bid price up to and including $100,000, plus 20% of the final bid price from $100,001 up to and including $1,000,000, plus
12% of the final bid price from $1,000,001 and over will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in
person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.
12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any
lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material
produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be
used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent.
13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law).
The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions
contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents
to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.
