Two largest are complete figures with string cut detail. Also a Mezcala figure
with angular face, drilled eyes and crossed arms. Next an Olmecoid hunchback, lacking fine detail, but intact. Together with a Mixtec, pointy-headed
penate type figure in brown stone. Finally a simple, ovoid carving of a stylized bird. Each is on its own wooden block base.

areas of encrustation.

Buff-brown pottery palanquin with a seated chief wearing a cape and elaborate headdress with chin strap, long beaded necklace and ear ornaments.
Holding a large knife in his right hand. A sun umbrella is positioned at the
front left corner, held upright with a wood replacement pole. A minor hairline in the top center of the palanquin, otherwise intact, overall exc. cond.
A nice example.

his stomach. Depicted with plump cheeks and applied facial features. A
few remaining traces of red pigment highlights. Mineral deposits on the
surface. Head reattached and repaired break through the waist, restoration
over the breaklines.

Three pottery figures including a matching pair of seated female figures,
holding their hands to stomachs and wearing large beaded necklaces.
White slip surface with scattered deposits. One figure missing tip of one
leg and some minor surface erosion. Together with a standing warrior figure
wearing a large disc headdress and ear ornaments. Face highlighted with
red pigment, scattered mineral deposits. Some repairs and restoration to
arms and legs.

Finally, a figure holding both hands to her mouth, and a trophy head on the
back, a later addition, not original to the piece.

Two pottery figures including a standing figure with hands held on hips,
wearing small ear ornaments and having perforated eyes and navel. Some
remaining white slip surface with overall scattered deposits. Intact. Together with a seated female figure with outstretched arms, plump stomach
and applied double tiered hairdo. Overall scattered surface deposits. Head
and right arm reattached with breaklines visible, some minor losses along
breaklines, ancient chip on left hand.

Both are red-brown pottery examples, one depicting the corn god and the
other, the rain god, Choc. The corn god holds an ear of corn with both
hands, having expressive facial features, open mouth. Repaired break
through the legs with visible breaklines, stable vertical crack down the left
side of his back. Choc is missing his left arm and right ear, scattered losses
mostly around the base rim. Remaining traces of ocher surface pigment.
Both have mineral deposits and root marks.

a wide band of incised and painted step design elements and a lower wide
band of spiral or hook elements and vertical panels, highlighted with redorange and cream paint. Strong mineral deposits on the surface. Intact.
Together with a small dish having a central, black painted long legged bird
in a roundel, borders composed of circular and stepped elements. Intact.

surface.

Pottery jug having an applied strap handle, tapered bulbous body and head
spout having simple relief facial features. Painted reddish-brown geometric
decoration on the shoulder, face having a cream ground with red-brown
painted details. Worn shoulder decoration and handle reattached, with restoration over the breaklines. A very scarce type.

487. Paracas Blackware Bowl with Incised Geometric Decoration

lot 199, ex. private west coast collection.
Deep dish bowl in black painted pottery with incised step and geometric
design on the exterior, those areas within are etched and bear cream-white
pigment. Surrounding areas are burnished black, as is the interior which
also has lightly incised sun and ray design. A few breaks, several pock
holes filled and restoration over those repairs.

Two pottery vessels including a Moche gray ware pottery vessel having a
saucer form body and stirrup spout. Decorated in relief with a large Ai-Apec
figure having snake head feet and surrounded by snakes. Rim of chimney
spout sanded to remove chips, minor base rim flakes, otherwise intact.
Together with a red-brown pottery vessel having a seated figure on the
front edge and having a strap handle and rear spout. Some remaining black
resist geometric decoration on the body of the vessel. Heavily repaired from
approximately twenty original pieces with restoration over the breaklines.

Decorated pottery example having twin opposing, applied, strap handles
on the sides of the body and cylindrical neck with funnel mouth. Flesh color
ground with painted red-brown and black front registers with large, stylized feather or plant elements and central crosshatched panel. Scattered
mineral deposits on the surface. Flared rim is partially restored and on large
piece reattached, chip on left loop handle.

Including a cream slip glazed pottery double lobed bottle having a tall
slender rear spout. Standing male figure on the front lobe, holding a small
shield and club. Wearing a segmented crown. Figure partially restored and
most of spout restored, repairs and restoration to the lobes. Together with a
salmon color, square pottery vessel having a wide bowl form spout, applied
loop handles decorated with a seated monkey eating a fruit. Brown painted
checkered pattern on both ends and small birds and geometric elements
painted on the sides. One side panel and rear end panel partially restored
and repainted, most of bowl spout restored.

Two blackware pottery vessels including a Reyna vessel depicting a chiefs
head flanked with animal heads, supplicant on the wide strap handle. Minor rim roughness and a small probe hole in center of base. Together with
a vessel having two tapered spouts and a bridge handle decorated with a
small deity head in the center flanked by the vegiforms on each side. Upper
body of vessel decorated with six profile bird heads. Tips of both spouts
restored and head partially restored.

Molded blackware pottery vessels, both having stirrup spouts. Including
a llama form bottle having a small bird at the base of the chimney spout.
Restored from several pieces with restoration over the breaklines and areas
of resurfacing. Together with a tapered bodied vessel decorated with a long
stemmed fruit. A small monkey clinging to the base of the chimney spout
and two birds at the base of the stirrup. One bird missing a portion of its
body, one fruit chipped, otherwise intact.

Blackware pottery bulbous body vessel on a pedestal base decorated in
relief with two bands of geometric decoration. Tapered spout forming the
headdress of a male figure having intercourse with a reclining female. Applied strap handle on the reverse. Handle repaired from three pieces and
reattached, otherwise intact.

First a fragment from a crown or headband having a masked figure wearing
a large feathered headdress. Next a partial knife and handle with deer or
llama at top, wearing a bell collar. Missing lower part of knife. Next a hollow,
disc form ear spool with low relief monkey. Finally a copper figure, this Inca
or later. Each on a separate wooden mount.

Four carved wood items including an ovoid mummy bundle mask, perforated along the sides for attachment. A few remaining traces of red-orange,
white and black pigment highlights, weathered surface. Together with a
slab type standing figure, having a heavily weathered surface. Also a carved
hardwood ovoid figure having simple carved details and wearing a pendant
necklace. Finally, a carved hardwood kero fragment decorated with a relief
carved warrior holding a club. All are mounted on old wood bases.

Including a thick sheet copper duck form tumi knife, depicted with a curled

remains incorporated within the patina. A few small chips on the ducks
breast, otherwise intact. A rare example. Together with a round openwork
disc having a central decoration depicting a standing warrior, holding hands
with two small children. Wearing a large feathered headdress. Perforated at

Both of cassowary femur bone, these daggers were adorned with elements
of revered natural items that helped to increase the spiritual power of the
warrior or owner. The smaller dagger is attached with a cassowary sharpened claw, while the other is carved with barbed points. Both are covered
at joint with sago fiber weaving, cassowary feathers, abrus and coix seeds,
and display exc. cond. with tan patina.

on custom base. Also a small, well worn bone Kris handle from Sumatra, on
custom base; Naga mens ear ornament of Xancus Pyrum shell displaying
a single figure with arms raised, North India. Plus two bronze Akan goldweights, one is a long bushcow with a small bird riding between the horns
on custom base, other is a long fish, from Ghana. Porous volcanic stone
carving of a head, possibly Easter Island, much detail lost, custom base.
Lastly, bronze star-shaped spur, a brass sistrum with openwork detailed
frame on custom base; and a brass stirrup with stamped detail.

designs of: a bull, a cow, a couple, a horse, intestines, a leaf. Also 5 crosses, three with Jesus at center; 2 small crowns with cut out design; and a
pair of eyes within a decorative border. Most are mounted on 2 individual
placques, three items are loose and unmounted.

crown socket, feathers now mostly lost, otherwise intact. Hardwood base.

The thin slab, rectangular panel bears a double perforation and painted eye
and a few lines from an inscription. Reverse with lightly inked hieroglyphic
drawings and remnants of adhered papyrus. Together with a scaraboid depicting Hapi, the baboon and an inscription of Toth. Finally a small bluegreen scarab, central figure and chipping on inscription side, dung beetle
side mostly there.

bottle decorated with a hobnail elements. Overall scattered surface encrustation with silver iridescence patina. Tip loss to two of the hobnails, otherwise intact, overall exc. cond. Together with an aubergine color, bulbousbodied bottle having a wide flared mouth. Decorated with a very light dip
molded net pattern. Intact. Together with a yellow-green glass fluted vial,
having areas of earthen encrustation, intact. Finally, a deep green glass
lower body portion from a long necked vial, missing the neck.

areas of encrustation. Intact.

encrusted patinas. A miniature copper maskette applique, perforated along
the edge for attachment. Two minor holes in nose, otherwise intact. Finally,
a fragmentary bronze ring decorated in low relief with the bust of Isis, depicted with large breasts.

Gold and silver alloy coin of Ala al-din Muhammed, Shah of the Khwarezmian Empire from 1200 to 1220. His ancestor was a Turkic slave who
eventually became a viceroy of a small province named Khwarizm. He is
perhaps best known for inciting the Mongol invasion of Khwarezmia, which
resulted in the complete and utter destruction of his empire.

geometric medallions and linear brown on red ground over buff terracotta.

Two molded stucco seated Buddhas, each depicted meditating with a serene expression, heavy lidded eyes, aquiline nose, arched eyebrows, gently
smiling lips and elongated ears. Hair arranged in a bun, hands clasped over
lap. Draped in a long sleeved robe with elegant U-shaped folds and neatly
tucked under legs. Earthen deposits, encrustation, and rough hewing to
reverse. The larger example has some minor edge losses, otherwise overall
exc. cond. The smaller example is missing his legs and left shoulder. Head
reattached and possible from a different example. Individually mounted on
lucite display bases.

bearer, with wide hips, and wearing a pectoral. Traces of green paint. Feet
and right arm lost, gouge on nose.

the larger example has a sword and shield. Both exhibit heavy surface wear
from handling, otherwise intact.

The well worn Khmer, 3/4 in the round carving bears a triangular form with
three heads on the base supporting a single head of Buddha, with pointed
flame headdress. Eroded surface. Together with a small Indian fragment
in the form of a female head and bust, showing ample, rounded breasts
beneath a low relief necklace or collar line. Nose chipped, other obvious
losses.

Small, gilt bronze buddha seated with hands in his lap in meditation mudra,
upon tiered base. Ratanikosin dynasty, 1780-1820. The head in dark black
bronze is probably Ayudthya period and bears lovely serene face with
pointed flame atop head and elongated earlobes. Repaired from several
pieces and with a restored base, making it stand stably.
