Supporting them are our excellent academic staff, all of whom have unparalleled experience of working in elite sport and clinical practice, from Olympic Games to World Cups, Premier League football to Super League rugby, and acute medical care to highperformance rehabilitation. We have gathered together an exceptional faculty of practitioner scholars, who not only produce leading research but also continue to lead in best practice, and it is this combination of skills which makes our teaching, research and consultancy so distinctive and relevant. Anna on pitch at Bradford Bulls Anna Fitzpatrick Head of School of Sport & Biomedical Sciences Anna joined the University of Bolton in 2006 as a Senior Lecturer in Sport Rehabilitation. Previously she spent five seasons as first grade physiotherapist at Bradford Bulls rugby league club that included two Grand Finals, two World Club Challenges and two Challenge Cup wins. She led the development of the University’s Sports & Spinal Injury Clinic, which opened in May 2008, and the Athlete Development Centre, which launched in 2012. With a Masters in Health & Social Care, Anna is now completing her PhD in rugby league injury incidence and has been principle researcher for the Rugby Football League Injury Surveillance Programme since 2010. Anna continues to work with senior orthopaedic consultants and club physiotherapists in elite sports medicine and has specialist interest in shoulder and knee injuries. Following several years as Course Leader for the BSc (Hons) in Sport Rehabilitation, lecturing on the Advanced Clinical Skills, Differential Diagnosis and Clinical Experience Modules she is now Head of the School of Sport & Biomedical Sciences. The course is a Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) Skills Development Partner and you will gain practical experience, for example running sports projects and coaching sessions in the community. Sports Science & Coaching BSc (Hons) Endorsed by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), this degree aims to teach you how coaching and sports science principles can be used to monitor and improve both individual and team performance in sport. You will have the opportunity to develop your understanding about physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, and strength and conditioning. Graduates may go on to train to teach PE or work as a coach or sports scientist. For someone coming from a competitive training environment it was a massive eye-opener and made sense of how your body achieves your physical goals.” Sport & Exercise Science BSc (Hons) This course, taught by lecturers with academic and industrial expertise and applied experience, and endorsed by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), is a great route into the rapidly growing sports, exercise and physical activity sector. It aims to teach you how physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, and strength and conditioning all interact to influence sporting performance. Work experience placements are facilitated by a broad range of organisations and our links include leading orthopaedic surgeons and sports healthcare practitioners as well as top football and rugby clubs. The School’s extensive network includes partners in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, enabling us to offer a wide variety of placements in work environments relevant to our courses and the aspirations of our students, locally, across the UK and internationally. • Sports staff organised 127 student placements during the 2015/16 academic year – 12 “I’ve just returned from a three-month placement at Rutgers University-Newark, New Jersey, USA, shadowing their athletic trainers and supporting their student-athletes. It was very hands-on and I was involved in everything from injury assessment through exercise prescription to pitchside assistance for sports like basketball, baseball, tennis, softball, volleyball and soccer, as well as for the track and field team. It was a fantastic opportunity and I’m so proud to have been able to represent the University of Bolton’s Sport Rehabilitation degree over in the States. ” Rachel Skipworth BSc (Hons) Sport Rehabilitation “My final-year placement was working with the first team at Stoke City FC. I was there for eight weeks and it was the best experience. Independent of your academic studies, the Bolton Award requires a minimum commitment of 35 hours, but it can be completed at a pace that is convenient for you, even over the duration of your course. Being a member of one of our sports teams offers a brilliant opportunity to represent Bolton at a top-flight level, and getting wins in the interuniversity British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues is one of our highest aims. In the most recent season, the University of Bolton has been represented in basketball (men’s), football (men’s and women’s), hockey (men’s and women’s), netball (women’s) and rugby union (men’s). We have a competitive women’s rugby union squad in development thanks to funding from the RFU, while a new triathlon team is also planned for students who want to run, cycle and swim their way to the top. Our sports clubs and societies are run by students selected via a democratic process, with club captains, chairs and secretaries trained at the Students’ Union and committee contacts listed online for you to get in touch with them. Playing in a team is a good way for me to relieve stress and develop useful life skills such as communication, support and of course teamwork. This year we got to the quarter finals of the Northern Conference Plate and we’re feeling very confident about next year. We’re hungry for success and are aiming for a trophy. Training is for the beginner right through to the experienced, so if you’re a bit rusty or you’ve never played, you can still take part. The clubs are friendly and inclusive, and always on the lookout for new players, and joining is a great way to develop useful skills, meet new people and have fun. You can get involved in non-league sports societies (see www.boltonsu.com/groups for more), while a number of activities are available in the £31 million health and sports hub Bolton One. Here there is a 50-foot climbing wall and an indoor sports hall offering coached classes and drop-in sessions for all abilities. The Self-Defence and Mixed Martial Arts Society practises here while the weightlifting group, the BARbarian Society, trains in the Strength & Conditioning Suite. The complex also houses a hydrotherapy pool, fitness suite, aerobics studio and an eight-lane, 25-metre competition swimming pool, where the Swimming Club meets once a week. In terms of amenities in the local area, seven leisure centres offer a range of facilities, such as all-weather pitches and #thisgirlcan classes. There is the Lucozade Powerleague for five-a-side football, tennis courts at Bolton Arena, the new Jump Xtreme trampoline centre, the weekly 5k Bolton Parkrun, wrestling at the YMCA, and various cricket clubs. If it’s winter sports you’re after, just down the road on the edge of Manchester is the UK’s longest indoor real snow slope, Chill Factore, for skiing and snowboarding, plus the Silver Blades ice skating rink. Meanwhile, the nearby West Pennine Moors are ideal for walking, running, cycling, horse riding, kayaking, sailing and even golf.
