OUR VIEW
,
Thumbs down: To those city residents who insist on setting off
.fireworks in residential areas late into the night. First, July 4 is
still two weeks away; second, have some compassion for your
neighbors who are attempting to sleep. Last year, the city issued
guidelines limiting fireworks to eight days prior to July 4 and
three days after from 6 to 11 p.m. Please be responsible.
Thumbs up: To the American Legion for its flag retirement ceremony on Flag Day. The LegioIl; had collected hundreds of tattered or faded American flags to be burned at the traditional public ceremony. It's a fittirig tribute to our nation's symbol of freedom. This is also a good time to remind residents to fly their
American flags proudly. If made of weather-resistant material, the
flag can. be flown around the clock in any weather if it is properly
illuminated.
Thumbs up: To singer Casey Jamerson of .Pendleton, who
released her new CD at a concert on June 13 at the Paramount
Theatre Centre in Anderson. The event, for which 700 ticketswere sold, also served as a fundraiser for the continuing preservation of the historic downtown theater.
Thumbs up: To Alexandria native Joey Martin and her husband, Rory Feek, for capturing third place in the nationwide competition of CMT's "Can You Duet." Judging from the enthusiastic
response from the audiences during the weeks of televised shows
in Nasliville, Tenn., this won't be the last we'll hear from this talented coUntry duo.
Thumbs up:-To the participants of the annual Relay for Life.
Not only does the event raise thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society's efforts in Madison County, but it also raises
awareness of the survivors' struggles and successes, and honors
the memory of those who've lost the battle agmnst the disease.
Organizers were prepared for the stormy weather and moved
most of the 18-hour event indoors at Anderson High School
Thumbs up: To the Madison County treasurers office for sending'out provisional property tax bills this month instead of waiting fo the state to approve the county's new tax rates. Taxing .
units will not have to struggle for revenue and borrow money as'
they did last year, and homeowners will not be caught facing the
total bill at the end of the year. The second half of the bills will
come later this year. County officials say that they will likely be
for lesser amounts.
Thumbs up: To Fritz Behrens, third-generation owner of the
Behrens Paint Spot, which closed in 2002, and the W.R. Dunkin
- & So constrqction. company, which has been in Anderson since
, -~~ bUilt many of Madison County's major buildings.
·ge os arid Craig Dunkin, president of WR. Dunkin & Son,
receIved the Anderson Rotary Club's 2008 Community Image
Awari:ls at a luncheon Tuesday.
Thumbs up: To Elwood resident Linda Southern, who o~
ized a group of volunteers to gather donated items to help the
victims of the southern Indiana floods. Red Gold donated a truck
to carry the goods to Columbus. It's another example of Madison
.
County residents stepping up to help others in need.
Thumbs up: To Countryside Manor Healthcare Center for its
. efforts to collect supplies for care packages to send to the men
an women s~rving in the Anny National Guard. Items such as
bars' of soap, foot powder, lip balm, crossword puzzles, new or
used music CDs, etc. These can be dropped off at the nursing
home, 205 Marine Drive, Anderson, until July 3. It's a way of
showing our appreciation for the soldiers' efforts in the war
zones.
