Message From The Director
Spring is a busy time of year at the Parks and Recreation Department
as we hustle to get our parks and beaches ready for the upcoming
season and put the final touches on our summer program lineup. As
busy as we all are it feels good to turn the corner on a long Maine
winter and move into the spring and summer season. We have been
working on some great projects over the winter and we’re anxious
to share them with you.
survey work necessary to get the Long Sands Bathhouse project
under way. The permitting for this project is expected to be
complicated and we ask residents for their patience as we work
through this arduous process. My hope is that we can move this
project along in a way that will enable us to begin construction in
late fall or early winter. A new bathhouse is sorely needed and the
quicker we get it finished the better.
Together with Catchfire Creative of Portsmouth, NH, we have
designed a new website. Our goal was to produce a clean,
attractive site that is intuitive and easy to use. In addition to online
registrations we have some great new features. Our Facebook news
feed now appears on the home page and the great thing is you don’t
have to be on Facebook to scroll through and see what’s going on.
We have also added the ability for you to upload your favorite Parks
and Recreation photos directly to our website. How cool is that? In
addition, the new site adapts to your mobile devices making it easy
to read and use from your iPhone or iPad. Check us out at www.
yorkparksandrec.org.
In May voters will be asked to approve funding for phase one
of the Mount Agamenticus Universal Trail Project. This one mile
trail looping around the top of Mount Agamenticus has been
identified as a key recommendation in a summit conceptual
design and landscaping plan. The recommendations, compiled
through a public planning process, will provide new and approved
visitor opportunities and create a lasting scenic attraction to one
of York’s most valuable natural resources. Town funding would be
used to leverage State and Federal grant opportunities.
In November we broke ground on the construction of a new 800
sq. ft. addition to the Sohier Park Welcome Center and Gift Shop.
NDC Construction of Brewer, Maine, was awarded the contract and
has done an outstanding job at delivering a quality product; on
time and on budget. The $200,000 project is being funded entirely
from Park revenues and profits generated at the Gift Shop. A huge
thank you to the Sohier Park Committee and all the volunteers
who have worked tirelessly to make this happen. Opening day is
scheduled for May 1, 2014.
Residents may recall that last May voters approved the development
of a new multipurpose athletic field and 75 car parking area at the
Bog Road Athletic Complex. In October we contracted the services
of Fay, Spofford & Thorndike, Inc. of South Portland, Maine, to assist
the Town with the design and permitting phase of the project. This
has been an in depth process aimed at insuring minimal impact to
the wetlands and good storm water management practices. The
project is scheduled to go before the Planning Board in April and we
hope to begin construction in late spring or early summer. This new
field will be the primary home for York Youth Football and lacrosse
as well as facilitate other programs.
The Board of Selectmen recently awarded the contract for the
The Board of Selectmen recently authorized the Parks and
Recreation Department to go out to bid for a 28 passenger,
handicap accessible bus for the Senior Citizens Center. The bus
was made possible by a bequest left to the Center by the late
Marjorie Duffy. The gift which was in excess of $100,000 was “for
the sole purpose of providing capital and operating funds for the
senior’s transportation needs”. We believe the acquisition of the
bus will fulfill Ms. Duffy’s wishes and will allow the Senior Center
the opportunity to meet a multitude of senior transportation
needs. We are grateful for this wonderful donation.
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the
outstanding employees who work diligently to make the York
Parks and Recreation Department what it is today. I am extremely
proud of this organization and the work we do in our community
and I’m sure I don’t say it enough...so listen carefully, “You guys
are Awesome!”
Respectfully,
Mike Sullivan

Statement from the PRB Board
Summer 2014
This letter introduces you to the official brochure describing the many
programs and activities offered by the York Parks and Recreation
Department for summer 2014. We are drafting this letter on a spring
day that feels more like a late winter than an early summer. Winter
was a long and cold season here in York but looking at this brochure
will help put all that behind you. There are so many healthy seasonal
activities on offer this summer. There are opportunities for swimming
and surfing, tennis and volleyball, lacrosse and softball, adventure
camps for kids and road races for all, Christmas (in July) and outdoor
concerts along with many other events and activities for all ages and
abilities. Summer is finally here!
Whatever else you do, be sure to spend time on the Nubble -- not that
anyone familiar with York needs to be reminded to do that. There you
will find York’s new Visitor Center. It’s a beauty, with modern facilities
and a much expanded gift shop. The whole experience of being at our
beloved Cape Neddick Light will be enhanced by having access to this
new building. We hope you love it as much as we do.
While we can’t take any credit for it, we are also happy to let you
know that the new restroom facility at Short Sands will be opening
this summer. The Ellis Park Associates funded and built this new public
convenience but we can still crow about it! Hopefully by 2016, you
will see similarly new and similarly expanded restrooms at Long Sands
Beach because last November the Town gave the go-ahead for this
project. Also, because the citizens of York recognize the importance
of recreational space, next year will see the completion of new
multipurpose athletic field and expanded parking at Bog Road.
All these new facilities and new programs are designed to make
the experience of being in York outstanding and memorable. As a
Board, we want to express our appreciation to Mike Sullivan for the
leadership he has given to recreation programs and open spaces
over many years. It’s going to be a great summer in York. We all
need it so let’s get out and enjoy it.

The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for the
operations and maintenance of public buildings and grounds, parks,
beaches, recreation facilities and school and municipal athletic
fields. York has an expansive parks system that extends from the
summit park and conservation lands at Mount Agamenticus to the
iconic Nubble Lighthouse. A bustling tourist community during the
summer months our beaches are visited by thousands of visitors
each year and we work hard to maintain a safe and pristine natural
environment.
Consisting of mostly seasonal staff, our employees are highly visible
during the summer months. Our parks crews, custodians and
lifeguards are all here to serve the public and set high standards for
the care of our parks and beaches. Likewise we encourage you to
treat our public properties with the respect they deserve. The health
and well being of these natural resources is of upmost importance
and our goal is to protect them for generations to come.
Beach Information
Our lifeguard program begins on June 28th and runs through
September 1st. Guards will be on duty every day between 9:30am
and 4:30pm and will be stationed at Long Sands, Short Sands and
Harbor Beach.
The restroom facilities at Long Sands and Harbor Beach will be open
daily from May 3rd through Columbus Day. Short Sands restrooms
will be open from mid April through Columbus Day.
Resident parking stickers are available in the Clerk’s office at the York
Town Hall. Stickers are $35 each and $15 each for seniors. They are
effective from May 15th through October 15th and are good for York
Harbor Beach, Long Sands Beach, Cape Neddick Beach, York Beach
Ball Field and the Wiggly Bridge.
The Town of York participates in the Maine Healthy Beaches Program.
This is part of a larger statewide effort to insure healthy, informed
opportunities for swimming and other recreational water activities
along the coast of Maine. Our beaches are tested weekly at various
locations in order to provide a standardized
quality-assured monitoring and notification
system. For more information about York’s
beaches you may call the Parks
and Recreation office or visit the

Nubblelight/ Sohier Park
Our community has one of the most beautiful lighthouse parks
in the country. The preservation and up-keep of this historic
landmark is ex–tremely important and is largely dependent on
community volunteers. Under the watchful eye of the Sohier Park
Committee, the Parks and Recreation Department is responsible
for maintenance and operations at the Park. Funding is primarily
derived from a small gift shop, which is located in the Welcome
Center at the park. The Center is open daily from late April through
late October. Please come visit our brand new remodeled facility
opening in May 2014. Your patronage and donations have doubled
the size of the gift shop and newly remodeled bathroom facilities.

Ambassadors Program
Each year the Welcome Center is staffed with friendly, enthusiastic
volunteers eager to greet visitors, answer questions about the park
and lighthouse, sell merchandise and promote the “Friends of Nubble
Light Program”. Volunteers work one, three-hour shift per week and
are a huge part of the Park’s success. For more information on the
volunteer pro–gram please call the Parks and Recreation Department

Mount Agamenticus Conservation Program Experience Mount A thru Work & Play!
The Mount Agamenticus region is a natural treasure and an
invaluable resource for wildlife, water, and recreation! The three
hilled area is home to vernal pool species, rare plants and animals
and is the heart of five watersheds that provide drinking water for
southern York County residents. It is also a recreational destination
point for over 40,000 residents and visitors annually. It boasts scenic
vistas, large unfragmented forests, biological richness, and miles of
well marked and maintained trails.
State, local and non-profit landowners work together to protect this
land and to manage recreational opportunities while conserving
wildlife habitat and water quality. These landowners make up the
Mount Agamenticus Steering Committee and include: the Towns
of York and South Berwick, The York Water District, Maine Dept. of
Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Great Works Regional Land Trust, York
Land Trust, and The Nature Conservancy. Together, these partners
strive to maintain safe, responsible, and enjoyable public access to
Mount A’s trail system without compromising the integrity of the
area’s ecologically significant habitat.
Thanks to the collaborative conservation efforts of our partners,
crew, volunteers and donors, Mount A has become a wonderful
place for the local community to enjoy the outdoors, experience its
scenic beauty, and to appreciate its significance as one of Maine’s
Last Great Places.
The Big A Universal Access Trail Project
The York Board of Selectmen approved the necessary ground work
to make the “Big A” trail and deck universally accessible. This is a
substantial accomplishment that will allow the Mount Agamenticus
Conservation Program to carry out management objectives
that sustain the region’s great diversity of natural resources and
recreational opportunities.
This 1 mile trail looping around the top of Mount Agamenticus has
been identified as a key recommendation in a summit conceptual
design and landscaping plan. The recommendations, compiled
through a public planning process, will provide new and improved
visitor opportunities and create a lasting scenic attraction to one of
York’s most valuable natural treasures.
The “Big A” trail, named for the former ski area located here, will
guide visitors through the open field, down into the shrubland
and connect with re-established trail heads. The trail will be
3 - 5 feet wide and have a compacted crushed stone and gravel
surface. It will also provide resting/picnic areas, look-outs with
expansive vistas, and wildlife viewing opportunities. Plantings of
native shrubs will occur to deter shortcutting of the trail and to
benefit wildlife, ecological diversity and add visual interest. As
the situation currently exists, there are no easy trails in the Mount
Agamenticus trail network. By building this gentler trail we improve
opportunities, access, and quality of life for everyone to include trail
runners, people with disabilities, seniors, and families with young
children and strollers.
A major project goal, dependant on attaining funding, is to make
the entire trail universally accessible. Plans also include developing
a comprehensive way finding/signage system, and implementing
additional recommendations of the landscape design such as
enhancing early successional vegetation and shrubland habitat. To
manage this remarkable endeavor, we have identified a four phase
implementation approach. Phase 1 includes the first 845’ of trail
and its implementation has a high potential to be the catalyst for
the entire project. This section is located on fairly flat terrain, near
accessible restroom facilities and an informational kiosk. Phase 1
connects people from the trail entry point to both the northerly
and easterly resting and viewing sites and incorporates the central
observation deck and summit Learning Lodge.
We are eager to begin this important stewardship program year,
creating a new opportunity for the community to be immersed in
Mount A’s rich ecology and diverse landscape. This project will

make an immediate and practical impact on individual lives by
providing inclusive access, deepen the connection with nature, and
continue to protect and enhance the very natural resources that
make Mount Agamenticus so special.

water quality, and the physical and economic health of the area.
There are touch tables with replica animal tracks and scat and games
relating to native plants and wildlife. The focal point is the new 3-D
topographical site model that depicts the region’s ground cover,
trails, and water bodies. The Learning Lodge is available for public
visitation as well as scheduled group visits. Come, look, and learn!
Self-guided Interpretive Trail & StoryWalkTM

Week-Long Golf Clinic
GOLF!
Baby Boomer Golf Clinics
at Cape Neddick Country Club
May 5, 12, 19 & 26 and September 8, 15, 22 & 29
Back by popular demand! Is golfing one of those things still on
your bucket list? Or did you put the clubs away years ago but have
the hankering to get them out again? Now’s the time! We have
partnered with Cape Neddick Country Club to provide anyone
aged 55 and over the opportunity to learn to play golf in a nonintimidating, friendly, environment. Director of Golf, Dustin Hunter
and his staff will surely have you swinging the club, and loving it,
in no time! Don’t have clubs and not sure if you want to make the
investment just yet….no problem, they have clubs available to
borrow for both righties and lefties. While the rewards of golf are
many; time outside, low impact exercise, socialization, and so much
more, this particular clinic also comes with food and/or spirits. All
participants will receive a $10.00 voucher after each lesson, to be
used at the Cape Neddick Grille located right at the Golf Course.
The fee for this 4-week clinic is $100.00 per person and includes
four $10.00 food vouchers…Now that’s a deal! Space is limited and
an offer like this won’t last long, we’re sure of it. First come, first
serve, so sign up today. Comfortable clothes and athletic sneakers,
a willingness to learn, and a hungry tummy are all you’ll need. We
look forward to seeing you on the tee!
Want to put your practice to the test? All Baby Boomer clinic
participants are eligible to play at CNCC at the reduced “guest of
member” rates this season, be sure to inquire at CNCC for available
tee-times. Space is limited and registration at the Senior Center
office is required.
STARTS: May 5th and September 8th
ENDS: May 26th and September 29th

Monday – Friday, June 2nd – 6th
It is true that any motor skill improves most rapidly if you practice
EVERY day. With that in mind, we have partnered with Cape Neddick
Country Club to offer our Baby Boomers yet another opportunity
to learn, practice and play more golf. This is the perfect clinic for
anyone who wants to spend a full week fine tuning your skills in
preparation for a golf-filled summer. Don’t have clubs and not sure
if you want to make the investment just yet….no problem, they have
clubs available to borrow for both righties and lefties. Director of
Golf, Dustin Hunter and his staff will focus on the core fundamentals
of the swing, grip, stance, posture, alignment, chipping and putting,
and will offer specified individual instruction to participants as
needed. In our opinion, the best part of the clinic will be the on
course skills training scheduled for the Friday session; this is your
opportunity to take what you’ve learned from the putting green and
driving range to the course, to play with and learn from the staff.
The week-long clinic will be held Monday – Friday, June 2nd – 6th
from 5:00 - 6:00pm and will cost $125.00. The clinic will include all
instruction, daily reinforcement, on course skills training, a $10.00

Baby Boomer Kayaking
Recreational Kayaking is said to be the “perfect sport for the not so
sporty”; you do not need to be a skilled athlete to be a kayaker. It’s
an ideal activity for young or old, fit or not. Men and women can be
athletic equals in a recreational kayak. It’s easy to learn (most get the
knack in just a few minutes), requires almost no coordination and not
much muscle, and is exhilarating and completely relaxing….all at the
same time! Kayaking is fun exercise! Lots of baby boomers walk for
exercise but what most lack is upper body strength and walking doesn’t
provide that. The usual cure is weight and strength training at the gym,
but for most that is not very fun. Kayaking gives you a good upper body
work out with varying intensity levels as controlled by you. You can
burn calories by paddling at a quick pace or unwind with a few easy
strokes every now and then. Kayaking also offers a unique outdoor
experience… you are gliding across the water at eye level with nature!
There is nothing to be intimidated by, our qualified staff will provide
you with an introduction to kayaking and a safety session that will have
you benefitting from, and loving this sport in no time. This program
will meet on Thursday afternoons from 1:00pm - 2:00pm at Strawberry
Island on Rte. 103. The first of four sessions will begin on July 10th and
will run through July 31st. Due to the number of kayaks available, class
size is limited. We encourage any interested paddlers to register early.

If you’ve ever had the writing bug but didn’t know exactly where to
go with it, then this is the class for you! We will focus primarily on the

around style, syntax, plot, and other areas essential to bringing out
the best in our writing! This writing process will be a social one, so
be prepared to share! The focus will be on creating great fiction, but

PADDLE DIVAS, 40+!
Will you sit on the beach again this summer and remain curious
about Stand Up Paddling? (SUP)
Of course not! Join our 90 minute small group class and discover
that SUP is a wonderful way to enjoy our ocean, lakes, rivers and
bays. Our class is broken down into three components:
1. Basic SUP technique, paddle strokes & water safety 2. Added
fitness component including yoga poses and core exercises on your
board 3. Wrap up-review, free paddle—maybe a fun race to finish!
Will you love SUP? Of course you will! It is easy to learn. In under
an hour you will be standing up and paddling. The fundamentals
of paddling and safety will be discussed and put into practice.
Studies indicate that those who paddle on a regular basis build core
strength, more defined muscles overall and develop better balance
and improved body alignment.
You might fall off? Maybe! This will be very refreshing and fun on a
hot day. You will also learn to master your board and easily get back
on and feel empowered! Using your new skills you will enjoy stress
free days as you glide along the coast or explore a river or bay. This is a

on Facebook! Feel free to advertise/ post items you are looking to
swap, donate or sell (on your own terms).
Too often we find out after the fact that people have thrown away
gently used gear when people in our community are looking for just that
item. Hopefully this helps you clean out your closets or, on the receiving
end, helps you get equipment for kids just starting or soon to grow out
of expensive new equipment. We do not monitor deals, money transactions etc. This is simply a group to post where you can post your items or
request items. For items being exchanged you are welcome to use the
Grant House as a drop off and pick up which will prove helpful as we’re
open from 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday - Friday. Items must be picked up
within 48 hrs at the office as we have very limited storage space.

Our Kids Tennis Programs... IT’S ALL ABOUT FUN!
Norm Martinen has been enjoying tennis for most of his life
and is certified as a tennis professional through the USPTA
(United States Professional Tennis Association). Norm
enjoys teaching tennis to both adults and children, and will
be starting his eighth year as head coach for the York High
School girls tennis team and as a tennis instructor at The
Wentworth Country Club in Rye, NH.
“I’m a strong believer that experience and knowledge are
important in teaching tennis. But I feel these alone will
not give you a successful tennis program. Fun, motivation
and enthusiasm are equally important, and is the recipe
I use every time I’m on a tennis court” It works and it’s
contagious.
Having fun is our #1 goal in all of our Kid’s Tennis Programs. Yes, you
will improve your tennis game by working on the fundamentals,
forehand, backhand, volley and serve, however, even more important will be the fun your child will have in going to “jail”, or playing
rip your face off…wipe out…back of the bus…around the world…or
the now famous Beach Baseball Tennis. It is a known fact that kids
learn faster if they are having fun…so fun we do
have! Don’t miss out! Sign up your tennis
player for one of our fun filled summer sessions.
Your child will thank you…

Little Tennis is the nation’s tennis equivalent to Little League
Baseball, soccer or basketball. It is intended to “Bring everyone
together” who loves the game of tennis. It also is designed to be
totally inclusive and supportive of all other children’s programs,
organizations, activities and companies within the tennis industry.
Little Tennis is an extremely powerful toolbox for those who wish to
play tennis. It not only helps children learn the game but also their
parents and grandparents. The program has been designed by the
United States Professional Tennis Association - - the world’s largest
and oldest organization of tennis-teaching professionals. It includes
a structured program of lessons and play designed to move children
ages 3 - 10 quickly through the transitional stages of graduated
equipment to full-court tennis.

Quick Start Tennis play format takes a new and better approach to
introducing kids to the game. Balls are lower in compression; they
bounce less and don’t move as fast so they are easier to hit. This
allows kids time to get to the ball and helps them develop optimal
swing patterns. Racquets are sized for small hands, and the courts
are smaller and easier to cover. All that equals more fun and less
frustration! Full sized courts can be reconfigured to accommodate
York Parks and Recreation Department 363-1040

up to six 36-foot courts, so instead of waiting in line, kids can
spend their time playing. Kids learn to play baseball by first playing
t-ball; they use shorter, lighter bats and larger, softer balls. Kids
learning basketball shoot baskets with kid-sized balls and lowered
backboards; they play soccer on smaller fields with smaller goals.
But when it comes to learning tennis, we still make children play on
adult-sized courts with yellow balls and adult-sized racquets. This is
asking a lot of a kid who could be 2/3 the size of an adult. But tennis
has finally caught up. The benefits are immediate. Within an hour
kids are rallying, having fun and psyched for more. They’re playing
real tennis and having real fun. And isn’t that the point?

ME AND MY DOG – SPORTS!
Ages 10 to 14 unless the child has completed our first level
Kids and their dogs continue bonding and
relationship building and they learn about
the canine sport of Rally, Agility and Scent
Work. In Rally, kids and dogs team up to
navigate a course of numbered stations
indicating a variety of manners tasks to
perform such as sits, downs, halts, and
turns. Kids and dogs enjoy this sport
because they work close together as they
clap, whistle and even sing to their dogs
to encourage them through the course.
Agility is a sport that builds skills in
handling dogs over and through a course
of obstacles of ramps, tunnels, jumps and
weave poles in a low pressure positive
environment. This is a great way for dogs
and kids to gain confidence and bond.
Scent work is a hot new sport that will
teach kids to set up training scenarios
and direct their dog to use dog’s natural
ability of scenting to search for toys or
treats. Scent work will burn your dog’s
mental and physical energy, can be
done anywhere, and requires no special
equipment.

Junior Golf Tournament
New this year! High School division!
Back by popular demand and with a few new twists, the addition
of a High School division and an afternoon start. On Monday,
July 28th, young golfers from grades 3-12 are invited to join us
at beautiful Cape Neddick Country Club on Shore Road for some
scramble format tournament play. For those who are not familiar
with the scramble format, groups will be formed (you can register
as individuals or teams), each player tees off on each hole. The best
of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots
from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then
all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is
holed. We think that this new format will be fun for all levels of
young golfers and we encourage players to sign up and/or put your
teams together early as we expect the tournament to fill quickly.
Tournament play is set to get underway with pre-assigned tee times
(you will be notified) beginning at 3:00pm Players who register as
individuals will be placed on a grade appropriate team. Awards will
be given to teams and individuals in age categories. Following your

Couch to 5K
The original training program from Cool Running
Is running a road race on your bucket list? Then this is the program
for you and why not set one of our races as your goal! The folks at
Cool Running have developed this effective running plan that will
get you off the couch and onto the roads, running three miles in
just two months. Too many people have been turned off to running
simply by trying to start off too fast. You should ease into your
running program gradually. The beginner’s program that Couch to
5K outlines is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging
program and outlines 9 weeks of workouts (3x per week) for you.
You can easily track your progress manually or with the online
version which also offers access to a host of easy- to-use training
tools and daily e-mail reminders. The manual tracking option is
free while there is a minimal charge for the online version. For
more information or to get off the couch today go to: http://www.

weeks to the basketball program again this year. The first 2 weeks
will consist of skill development, so that you start the basketball
season with some knowledge under your belt. Throughout
the season we will continue to offer skills and drills during the

competitive ball, with strict ref calls. This is your chance to put all
you’ve learned to the test.
