On the cover, you ask what’s in a name? This is a sampling of daylily
names that involve Presidents and First Ladies. In memory of the recent
passing of President Gerald Ford, I have selected the stunning namesake
of his lovely wife, Betty Ford. Did you know she has family in the AHS. It’s
the lovely wife of Charlie Baker, Bonnie, from Denver. It’s a small world.
Flags should also bring to mind the fact that we need your votes upon
many occasions throughout the year. Please take the time to vote for our
new Region 12 Director. We will sorely miss David Kirchhoff as he and
Mort Morss have relocated to Kentucky.

As your new
Regional Vice
President, I want
to first thank Joe
Agosta and his
team of Officers
and Liaisons for
the tremendous job
they have done for
the past four years.
My plans and goals
for my term are along the same line as
Joe and that is increasing membership
in Region 12. We have all the tools and
talent necessary to accomplish this. In
addition to increasing membership in
our local clubs I see a huge area that
is underserved by any daylily club and
I am going to work hard to get a club
started in the Citrus - Marion County
area. There are a lot of daylily folks in
this area. I want to encourage all of our
members to join in and help me in the
effort to increase our membership. I
welcome all of your thoughts and ideas
and I am always available to talk to you
about them.
I want to thank all of our new and
returning Regional Officers and Liaisons
for volunteering to help me during my
tenure as your RVP. I am still in need
of a Youth Liaison and an Awards and
Honors Liaison and if you would like to
volunteer to serve please get in touch
with me. Don’t hesitate to contact the
Officers and Liaisons if you have ideas
to share or suggestions for improving
Region 12. I believe we have a good
team assembled and I am excited to be
working with them all.
As you can see, we have a new
name and a new format for the Region
12 Newsletter. “The Daylilian” was the
name of the newsletter prior to Joe’s
RVP term. I am not going to guarantee
that the color and upgraded paper will
continue as it is strictly about the cost
of production. Since I am writing this
article before the printing of this issue
I will calculate the difference in cost
of this issue and prior issues and will
bring this to the table as new business
at the spring Regional meeting. In the
meantime, I would love to hear from all
of you about this issue and what you

would like to see your Newsletter be in
the future.
In this issue is the ballot for a
new Region 12 Director. As most of
you know our current Director, David
Kirchhoff, has moved to Kentucky and
is no longer eligible. This is a very
important position in that the Director is
the voice of every one of us in Region
12 with the AHS Board of Directors.
Please take the time to vote for the
nominee selected by the Nominating
Committee or write in your preferred
candidate. Return your ballot to
Margaret Tucker by the deadline stated
on the ballot. Region 12’s new Director
will be announced at the spring Regional
meeting.
I want to thank all of our clubs that
have set up their club websites and
we have them linked to the Region
12 website, www.ahsregion12.org.
Pensacola and North Florida have
recently done a tremendous job of
adding their club pages and our newest
addition is Sunbelt Daylily Chapter
with their newly created website, www.
sunbeltdaylilychapter.com. Check it
out. It has all the information for the
spring Regional too. Anytime you have
changes to your websites, please send
the information to me and I will have our
very able and competent web mistress,
Rita Meng make the changes for you.
Our club and regional websites let
everyone know what is going on in and
around the Region and is a great tool for
communication among our members.
Speaking of the spring Regional,
this is going to be a really fun and
exciting event. It’s being held Friday
and Saturday, May 18th and 19th and
is being hosted by the Sunbelt Daylily
Chapter. Friday afternoon is the annual
Volusia Hybridizers Party at Dan and
Jane Trimmer’s home. Clinics and
Workshops will be held on Friday and
Saturday. Sunbelt has plans for a
wonderful ice cream social and plant
auction on Friday night at the Deltona
Civic Center. Saturday evening is
Frank Smith’s annual party with a free
barbeque. The Region 12 business
meeting and auction will be held here
in the pavilion. There is no registration

required. I am confident we will have
a huge attendance as everyone around
the country will be making a beeline for
“mecca”. No bus tours are planned,
but all the gardens are open for
visiting. See the notice elsewhere in
this newsletter and plan on attending. I
look forward to seeing all of you there.
I am sure we are all anticipating
another wonderful bloom season. I
love the spring with all the daylilies
blooming, then the anticipation of all
our club flower shows and plant sales.
I hope you will invite your friends to
your show and to your garden as
well. Give them a plant or two and
hopefully you can spark their interest
in our favorite flower. And don’t forget
to invite them to your club meeting.
Wonderful friendships can be made
along the way and help increase our
membership too.

RPD’s Message…
Creating awareness
As Publicity Director for Region 12, I
want to encourage
a region-wide effort
to increase awareness of daylilies. A
direct result of this
effort should also
be an increase in
memberships, show
attendance and plant sales. How can
we do this?
Promote daylilies in your local paper.
I have contacted all of the clubs within
Region 12 to collect contact information
for AHS news releases. It was apparent that most clubs knew the person to
call to get attention in their newspaper.
Talk to your contact—do they want to
send out a reporter? Do they want you
to write the article? Open your gardens
and show off your daylilies, folks! If
you need help to write an article, I am a
phone call away! Feel free to invite the
press to your show!
AHS offers all affiliated clubs free
space for a website. This is a great way
to reach out to interested people! The
AHS uses a talented web lady. She is
patient and very willing to help set up
the website in a format that you design.
To start the process, contact your RVP
Elaine Alito. I’ve done two of these sites
and found the process easy to use. The
site can be as complex or as simple as
you desire, and the web lady will help
you in any way she can. I know that
almost all our clubs have sites, and urge
those who don’t, to contact me. I’m
more than willing to help!
An attractive, colorful flyer is a wonderful tool to promote your club! Be
sure that your flyer includes the name
and email address of one or two contact
people to make it easy to get details
on the club! (Central Florida Daylily
Society’s flyer and website are identical.)
Flyers can be posted in your community,
handed out by cooperative nurseries,
distributed during sales events, and may
also be used as an excellent direct mail
solicitation. Direct mail?? Glad you
asked. Direct mail is appropriate for a
flyer (to promote membership) and for
publicity announcements for sales and
events.
I learned this trick when I performed
publicity for the Volusia County Master
Gardeners. The Florida Federation of
Garden Clubs (FFGC) sponsors garden
clubs throughout Florida (more than 40
clubs are in Central Florida). The FFGC
sells what they call a “Book of Information” for $2.50, and this publication lists
all FFGC garden clubs (with contact
names, addresses and phone numbers) within the state. You can send a
check for $5 (includes $2.50 postage) to
order the book, but be sure to request
its supplement (an update). Send your
request to The Florida Federation of
Garden Clubs, 1400 So. Denning Drive,
Winter Park, FL 32789. The FFGC’s
telephone number is 407-647-7016.
This information is invaluable and can
be used for your direct mail advertising (it is not difficult to determine which
clubs are in your area). FFGC club
members are already plant people, and
who knows? Discovering daylilies could
just make their day!

From the Editor...
As Newsletter Editor for Region 12,
I want to thank all the providers for their
interesting articles and photos.
I have discovered a wide variety
of talent within our organization and it
starts with the regional leaders and the
bonds they have formed with various
talented members. I greatly appreciate
each of you. A special thanks to Sandy
and John who helped me tremendously,
without being daylily members!
With my first attempt at creating a
newsletter, I hope you won’t be disappointed. This is quite an honor and
very exciting to have a hand in such a
project. I’d love to hear from you.
As Floridians are all awakening from
a brief winter, I hope everyone can smell
that spring is in the air. People bustling
in their gardens to make their own little
paradise, aren’t you?
A lot of work goes into a well manicured lawn and flower beds. Now is the
time to take a daylily to a friend when
they’re working outside and help them
plant it, follow up with encouragement
throughout the year, and you’ll soon
have them asking for more. We’re just
fishermen out there keeping our passion
going to the next generation.

Director’s Message…
Bright future
Our trip to the AHS Fall
Board meeting in Raleigh ended
up taking thirteen hours rather
than eight. Friday traffic was
backed up for miles, and the
trip seemed interminable. The
meeting was hosted by the Raleigh
Club.We regretted missing the
special barbeque dinner they
provided on Saturday night. Dr. John Holland, membership
chair, gave his committee’s report
from the questionnaire that we had
received earlier in the year. The
results show that the AHS is very
much on track – few complaints
and plenty of positive input. Folks
still enjoy our shows, the Daylily
Journal, regional newsletters and
local clubs. The membership
committee is developing a voucher
system that will allow new members
and some levels of renewal as
incentive to join and stay with the
AHS. It is the dead of winter here in
the KY Bluegrass, with gray skies
and near freezing rain. Times like
this remind us why millions of folks
flock to FL in the winter. I am looking
forward to the spring and the spring
meeting of AHS Region 12 in Central

This year’s Munson Hybridizer’s Bed is graciously being hosted
by Frank Smith. Regional members will be able to vote for their
favorite new seedling while attending the Regional meeting in
May. Plants are shown with special identifying markers that keep
the voters in the dark as to the hybridizer. It is very exciting to see
what everyone has in store. You don’t have to be a commercial
grower to enjoy the fun and exhibit what you have created. Everyone who hybridizes is welcome to participate.
Last year’s winner, shown to the left, is now a new introduction
by the Kinnebrews and is named ‘H. Spacecoast Willie Marcus’.
It was a showstopper at last year’s Regional in Tampa.
Most hybridizer’s have already submitted their five seedlings for
display this spring. It is preferential to ship plants in late summer
or fall for superior exhibition of the seedling.

The AHS Region 12 Fall Meeting was called to order by Regional Vice President Joe Agosta
at the Tallahassee Holiday Inn on Oct. 14, 2006 graciously hosted by the Tallahassee Daylily
Society.
AHS and Regional officers present were introduced as follows:
Region 8 Director Ottis Houston, Region 12 RPD Virginia Gregory, Secretary Linda Sample,

MINUTES: A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as published in the Regional Newsletter. The motion passed unanimously.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Opal Howell reported a combined total January balance of
$17,451.81. After reviewing expenses and incoming funds she stated that the current total
balance is $25,343.45. Sandy Soderberg and Linda Sample were thanked for the lovely
daylily quilt they made as one of the items generating income. Elizabeth Salter won the
opportunity to take it home.

RVP Agosta thanked all those responsible for helping to grow the treasury to a point of admirable sufficiency. Other accomplishments during the last 4 years include:
1 - Website presence of 4 clubs now with 2 more close to appearing. This has proven
to be a big help exposing the general public to what’s available in our state. It’s been noted
that people joining AHS who are involved in a club are much more likely to continue their
AHS involvement in AHS after the first year.
2 – Region 12 Bylaws have been revised to comply with AHS guidelines.
3 – We expanded the Ophelia Taylor Award to be an optional Section in shows nation
wide – reminding members that the competition is only with oneself as the number of award
winners is not limited in any one show and also that a person can only win it once in a lifetime.
4 – The Bill Munson Hybridizers Bed is now an established and welcome part of our
Spring Regional meetings.
Members were encouraged to present programs on daylilies to other garden clubs and RVP
Agosta volunteered to chair a Speakers Bureau that could be included in the programs of
incoming RVP Elaine Alito if she so chooses.
The newest AHS Display Garden – that of Dennis and Ellen Hoffman was announced. Their
Little Lake Lily Garden is in Pinellas Park, FL.
At the AHS National Convention our Region was honored by having our own Wayne Johnson receive the Helen Field Fischer Award, the highest award for service to the society.
Our Region 12 Service Award was presented to past RVP and Director Jean Norris. Both of
these deserving members have devoted many hours of welcome service and have been a
major influence in the prominence of our state in the daylily world.
Regional meeting announcements:
The 2007 Spring Regional Meeting will be hosted by the Sunbelt Daylily Club on May 19. There will be Open Gardens without scheduled tour busses at this time.
The Fall Regional will be hosted by the North Fla Daylily Soc in Jacksonville
2008 Spring Regional – to be announced
2008 Fall Regional hosted by the Bay Area Daylily Society in Tampa/St. Pete.
RPD Virginia Gregory announced the Popularity Poll results with 76 votes counted. Members were reminded that this is less than 20% of our regional members and were encouraged to participate next year. The poll was tabulated to include the ties for each place which
yielded more than 5 daylilies for each place. Each club has the option to include all of the
daylilies or just the first 5 in their show section. Virginia thanked all the members and her
RVP for their help and support during her term.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Exhibition Judge Liaison Floyd Sewell announced that we have 6 new exhibition judges in Region 12. Also there will be an Exhibition Clinic 1 and 3 offered at the Fall Regional
meetings. The clinics will be designed to be educational for all members to attend as well as
current judges to renew their certification.
Unfinished Business:
On the idea of providing funding for a college student to explore rust disease as suggested by Jean Norris, Dr. Jay Charba has volunteered to present his findings and recommendations at our next spring meeting.
Ottis Houston encouraged hybridizers to see how one of their seedlings would perform in
Frank Smith’s growing conditions by submitting entries for the 2007 W. E. Munroe Hybridizer’s Bed.
New Business:
A committee was formed to select a nominee for Region 12 Director.

Tucker was nominated by Betty Winkler and will head the committee. Gene Perry was nominated
by Virginia Gregory, and Tom Dickson was nominated by Elaine Alito. All three were accepted by
acclimation. The committee will select a candidate whose name will be printed in the Spring Newsletter. Members will vote by means of a ballot in the newsletter that may be mailed to the chairman
of the nominating committee. Results of the election will be announced at the spring meeting. The
new Director will take office the following January.
RVP Joe Agosta appointed Ottis and Mary Ann Houston to audit the regional books and report to
the members in the spring Region Twelve Newsletter.
A motion was made by Opal Howell and seconded by Betty Winkler that the new Treasurer be
bonded at the expense of Region 12. During the discussion, Floyd Sewell was appointed by Joe
to research AHS Bylaws for the appropriate wording so our region’s bylaws could be amended to
include this requirement.
An amendment was made by Joe Agosta that the bonding include the any other signatories on
transactions. The amendment and the motion passed unanimously. Floyd Sewell will research the
cost of the bond.
Opal Howell suggested that the majority of the money be placed in a CD with 2 signatures required
on all transactions.
A motion was made by Opal Howell that the next Treasurer be an elected officer vs. being appointed by the RVP. The motion was seconded and discussion followed. A motion was then made by
Ottis Houston and seconded by Floyd Sewell to table the motion until the Spring Meeting. Motion
was carried unanimously.
The order of business was suspended and John Kinnebrew presented an interesting and educational program with emphasis on his hybridizing priorities and horticultural practices which was
heartily enjoyed by all.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Linda Sample informed members that Tim Bell will speak on his garden and hybridizing program at
the Pinellas Co. Ext. Service in Largo January 13. Anybody that is interested may contact one of
the BADS members for information.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.

Leadership for our Society by Joe Agosta
Keeping our daylily clubs, American Hemerocallis Society regions, and the AHS Board of
Directors staffed with energetic, competent, and focused leaders is an endless effort. Many
volunteer to serve and do so with dedication, but we all know that a lot of arm-twisting takes
place each year to fill some positions.
No one accepts a leadership position in our Society, whether it is show chair, club president, RVP, RPD, newsletter editor, AHS Director, or AHS president without some measure of
misgiving. Personal commitments, job constraints, health and a host of other reasons may
contribute to this. By accepting the position the person usually has weighed the pros and
cons and decided that serving is compatible with their life. Those with wrenched arms have
hopefully done so as well. This is very different from the working world where career goals
and providing financial security are usually the main considerations to accepting a position.
Our daylily leaders, whether retired or still working, apply their work and life experience to
the tasks before them. Planning, staffing, and controlling are key elements to managing organizations. Success in the work environment reinforces these techniques and the tools of a
good leader. A candidate for office in our organizations, for example, may do well at running
a small business, directing a road repair crew, commanding a naval base, or presiding as a
school principal.
However, these otherwise successful individuals can feel frustrated unless they adapt to
the realities of the all-volunteer organization. Motivation techniques using authoritarian methods no longer work as well. Authoritarian leaders tend to take over problems and work to get
them solved by ordering the activities of others. Some take it to the extreme and micromanage the organization. Both of these types in the volunteer organization cause many members to sit back and not share their ideas for fear of ridicule or just lay back and say “let them
do it”.
Unilaterally making work assignments and demands on member’s personal time bears
fruit only in the short term. Assuming that members will expend the same amount of time in
support of the organization as the leader does is folly. Undertaking organizational commitments without gaining the assent of the membership will be met with disgruntled members at
best and usually a loss of members.
In short, the leader must bring the membership into the decision-making and planning
process, lead the discussions, and thereby gain a robust level of support for the organization’s endeavors. While these techniques are used in business, they are more important in
the volunteer organization since the membership receives no remuneration other than that of
personal satisfaction. Personal satisfaction can be easily fractured, and once broken leads
to a lost member.
If you are contemplating taking a position in our society at any level please do not let the
above comments dissuade you. By recognizing the differences between volunteer organizations and those organizations providing employment you will be able to adapt your personal
management skills to be a more effective and respected leader.
The AHS mission statement in part states what we all strive to do and that is “promote, encourage and foster the development and improvement of the genus Hemerocallis and public
interest therein”. Perhaps we should add: “and through effective leadership provide the working environment in the organization to bring out the best in the membership while pursuing
this goal.”

Hello everyone from the panhandle of Florida.
When Elaine asked me to take on this important
post I let her know that I like to be a behind-the-scenes guy. I don’t want to get into
your club’s business unless you need an outside look. I am here to serve you and my
region. Before I get started I want to welcome any new members to Region 12. Feel
free to contact me anytime with questions.
With this first article I’d like to pass on some membership and club ideas. Most
important to me is how to increase ‘Active’ membership. I know that they say that
10% of the people do 90% of the work and it’s true with any group especially daylily
clubs. So I want to encourage you and let you know that all groups face highs and
lows and all clubs struggle with almost the same exact issues. What makes your
membership thrive? What makes you and your club successful? Is your club struggling? What issues are drags on your club? We need to get feedback from you. Your
RVP and I want to know these things and we want to know early so issues can be
fixed as early if possible. Small club problems can soon become big problems.
1)
Establish a mentor program. If a new member joins AHS and/or the local club,
make sure that person has an established club member who calls and takes an individual interest in them succeeding in this hobby. We can not grow without relationships and the mentoring touch. I would task every local club president to track the
mentoring of every new person. I believe in trying to get every person in the club to
invite people as guests, especially those who like to garden. If we each could just get
one other person hooked on daylilies in a calendar year, we’d double our club size
and region in a year. Reward those who bring guests and mentor.
2)
A successful club needs generous people who are willing to donate talents,
plants and time. I personally set aside a growing area just for club plants and so do
other members. There is nothing more stressful than trying to find daylilies to sell to
raise funds during your clubs fundraising. A member who sprays club plants for rust
and mites is worth their weight in gold. Reward those who do these things.
3) Hopefully several in your club can deliver good programs. If not reach outside
the club. I would love to see more PowerPoint and videos generated and passed
around club to club. Quality videos of gardens and other teaching videos make a
great program and we have used them in our local club. I think every club should try
to fund or have access to a TV/DVD/VCR unit and even a digital projector and laptop
to support local programs if your local meeting place doesn’t have these available.
Slide projectors are slowly going out but we still need to support slides. Most successful clubs have consistently good programs. If you can’t generate within the club,
invite guest speakers in.

Look in your area for garden clubs especially a Master Gardener program. Be
on the lookout for other plant clubs like camellia and bonsai clubs. Once gardeners
are informed about the modern daylily many have great interest and bring in outside
talents. Master Gardeners can be some of your most active members. I can tell you
that rust is a BIG issue for many gardeners and so you have to let them know that
there are resistant varieties and be able to give them daylily names that are resistant. A good link to find some rust resistant varieties can be found at:

roses in their care. Once you have a passionate gardener hooked on daylilies they will
bring their gardening friends to the daylily club meetings. If you treat folks like family,
have good club programs and give daylilies away they can’t help but get hooked.

I keep adding the phrase, ‘Reward those who’ to many of my paragraph ending.
One of the things that got approved last year for the Pensacola Daylily Club was putting
in place an ‘Awards’ program which rewards active participation in local, regional and
national events. I would encourage every club to put such a program in place. Personalize it for your club’s taste. This is an evolving program.
PENSACOLA DAYLILY CLUB AWARDS PROGRAM
The Pensacola Daylily Club Awards program will be used to reward active participation in the club. The idea was passed down from other clubs nationwide and is instrumental in building a healthy club. Rewards Program credit accumulation for the club will
start in the fall to be used the next fall auction.
What are the goals for this program?
1. Build our club’s membership
2. Encourage and reward member participation
3. Promote recruitment and retention of members
4. Assist in filling Officer Positions
5. Promote membership in American Hemerocallis Society (AHS)
As we go through the year you have the opportunity to earn Club money (credit) to
spend on plants. These Club Dollars are earned by signing the attendance sheets and
other ways outlined by the program. Club Dollars are credits that you can use to buy
plants at the club auction which is usually held October the next year in our club. After
the auction in October all Club money accounts Zero and we start again. Credits are
not transferable and expire when the fall auction closes.

Now I believe it will support itself. You need a generous hybridizer, a good grower
and manager. Someone who will serve the club with this program and provide a
place for the ‘Awards’ program plants to thrive and multiply members. Try and have
open gardens in your area.

I think this program is probably the key or one of the key things that worked
for our club this year to increase and hold membership. Our club bought a Spring
06 collection from a leading hybridizer and it was grown and multiplied though out
the spring. Let the hybridizer you choose know the collection is for a club ‘Awards’
program. I bet he/she will be generous. If not select a different hybridizer to support your club. If every club could get one good hybridizer to support this effort and
get an awards program going it provides one of the greatest motivations a club can
generate for its members. This past October I dug, washed and labeled the ‘Awards’
collection and the club held a fall auction. The club bid club dollars they earned from
active participation. Many members bid real money with cold hard cash. I had the
flower pictures in a PowerPoint presentation and the bidding started at 25% of the
Hybridizers price for a single fan. I held up the plant and the bidding started. If we
didn’t sell the plant it was replanted for later sale on the Lily Auction and the money would be used to seed the next years ‘Award’ collection. Not only did everyone
get plants but the club received actual money paid for many of the plants that sold.
Other generous members brought in even more pants that were used in the auction. Even $5.00 plants went on the auction. Net effect of the program is the club will
make enough money for the program to fund itself. I only needed the club to seed
the first collection buy and now I believe it will support itself. You need a generous

program and provide a place for the ‘Awards’ program plants to thrive and multiply.

Having plants at each monthly club meeting and having a raffle for plant giveaways is also very motivating. Folks seem to show up when plants are being regularly given away as door prizes. Follow up with good programs. We have club members who bring sodas and snacks to each meeting. Office supply stores sell rolls of
raffle tickets so have some on hand.
Well I hope maybe an idea or two will jump out and help your club. I encourage all of
you to be asking your leadership, “what can I do to help?” If everyone does a little it
has a synergetic effect and the whole club is better off for it. Spring is in the air and
the excitement is building. I can hardly wait. Our shows and gardens are one of the
best ways to bring in new members. Try having open gardens in your area.

Central Florida Daylily Society
The Central Florida Daylily Society members are looking forward to the spring
of 2007.
During the January meeting, held at Leu Gardens members discussed the
heat and drought of the 2006 summer which has taken it’s toll of cultivars in various member gardens.
Now with the very mild winter of 2006 every one is watching their gardens in
anticipation of the spring growth. Arlene Wierschem, our Vice President, reported
that she has noticed a blooming scape in her garden and it only January!
The Central Florida Daylily Society and Sunbelt Daylily Chapter is collaborating to bring a combined daylily show for spring 2007 to the Central Florida Fairgrounds in Orlando, Florida. CJ Gregory is the Show Chairman representing both
clubs. CJ has reported that he is getting a very positive response for volunteers
from both clubs.

North Florida Daylily Society
In support of the efforts of Joe Agosta, the North Florida Daylily Society is
happy to report that the North Florida Daylily Society website is alive and well. It
features pages for Society Events, Shows, NFDS and AHS membership forms in
convenient Adobe formats that allow users to complete the application using their
computer and then printing the form for mailing. It also includes a page for Growing Daylilies which has information and links to other pages describing the most
common plant pests, aphids, thrips, and spider mites. There are also pages and
links for Plant Problems, Bylaws, Member Gardens, Contacts, and Show Awards.
Any suggestions, historical info, photos, and any other information you think
might be relative and worth sharing are solicited for addition to the site. All information can be forwarded to me nfdaylily@comcast.net

Bay Area Daylily Society
The Bay Area Daylily Society was pleased to bring Tim Bell to the Pinellas County Extension Center in January to show slides of his daylilies and gardens. He brought daylilies
to give away and to auction to the 58 people attending his presentation. Six people joined
our club after listening to Tim’s excitement about daylilies. Afterward club members gathered for a short meeting at Kay Smith’s home, then went to lunch together.
We started the year in September with a program on composting by Master Gardener
Harriet Gord-Noghani, who then gave everyone a free composter bin and thermometer.
She generated so much excitement, that she was invited back to the November meeting
for a program on worm composting. Everyone made their own worm bins, complete with
worms!
A round-table discussion on “what to do in your garden now” took place at the October
meeting.
Our Christmas party was held at Margie Johnson’s new home, which we filled with great
food and fun people!
We look forward to hearing Dan Trimmer at our March 18 meeting at the Hillsborough
County Extension Center.
Our Annual Show and Sale will be May 5th at the Pinellas Extension Center.
Club members went together to order Cedarthorn Daylily calenders, Eureka Daylily
Guides, and Plant Markers in order to save money so we can buy MORE daylilies.
Two of our member’s gardens, Dennis Hoffman in Pinellas Park, and Linda Sample in
Tampa, have been accepted at AHS Display Gardens.

Tallahassee Daylily Society
Tallahassee kicked off its first meeting of the new club year in September with guest
speakers Tim and Katiesue Herrington of Dublin, Georgia. The Herringtons presented a
wonderful slide program of their hybridizing program. Tim and Katiesue showed many
slides of their 2007 introductions as well as previously introduced hybrids. They brought
lots of great plants for auction as well as beautiful one of a kind hand made and painted
birdhouses created by Katiesue. Their slide program also included pictures of their new
garden. Many club members met the Herrington’s for dinner on Saturday night at a local
steak house. Great food and fellowship was enjoyed by all.
October was the annual club member slide show presentation. Club members Joe
Agosta, Maryzell Roberts, Abe Whitfield, Cindy & Randy Fleming and youth member,
Patrick Collins showed slides of their gardens and seedling plants. A question and answer
session followed the presentation and many new members learned what they should be
doing in their garden this month.
November was the club’s Holiday Party. Members brought their favorite covered dish
and the club purchased the meat. A Chinese Auction Dirty Santa game was played and
enjoyed by all.

Sunbelt Daylily Society
This winter we all had a great time at Leslie Mauck’s beautiful Maitland home. The
food and company was excellent. A great time was had by all. We even played pin the
monkey on the palm tree for prizes and had a white elephant gift exchange. Our club
greatly appreciates Leslie for volunteering her home.
The Sunbelt club has been very involved in activities this fall in anticipation of upcoming events. Our new website: www.sunbeltdaylilychapter.com was created by our own
Chris Rogers. The Spring Regional information is all on that site. We welcome your visit
and remarks about the site. Thank you Chris!
We have so much talent in our group that speakers never seem to be difficult to find.
In our upcoming meetings we look forward to continued planning for the 2009 National
Convention at our March 4th meeting (location TBD). Our April speaker will be Frank
Smith (location TBD). Our Exhibition Show this year will be May 12th in conjunction
with our friends from the Central Florida Club and it will be held at the Central Florida
Fairgrounds. The Spring Regional will be held at Frank Smith’s garden on May 19th. It’s
really great to have friends!
Our group is always looking for new members and we offer many thanks to the generosity and wisdom of Dan Hansen and Chris Rogers, as they bring free plants for our
guests to encourage a repeat visit.
For those victims of the recent tornadoes in the area our hearts go out to you. We have
not heard of any major damage to our members, just tree limbs and the like, but we know
the entire state is affected by the devastation. Our prayers go out to all!

Pensacola Daylily Society
On October 9, 2006 the first Club Awards Program Auction was conducted by
Tom Dickson. A digital image of each daylily auctioned was projected, along with
a stated average Eureka price, which enhanced our ability to make proper bids.
The auction brought in more than enough to finance the purchase of another
“Collection” in 2007 for the club Awards Program. There were plants remaining
after the auction from the collection which were retained by Tom to sell on The
Lily Auction. Some fairly recent daylilies were donated by members, and the new
members received great value for their winning bids.
On December 11th seventeen members met at the lovely home of Green and
Marion Hawks for our Christmas dinner party. Ten copies of Daylilies - A fifty Year Affair, The Story of a Society and its Flower, by Frances Gatlin, were obtained at a cost to the club of $25.00. Copies have been placed in all branches of
the West Florida library system, the three branches of Pensacola Junior College
libraries, and at the University of West Florida library. All copies have either a
frontispiece, or a handwritten notation, that the book is the courtesy of the Pensacola Daylily Club and the American Hemerocallis Society. The Region 12 website and the club president’s phone number are included. We hope this will bring
our club, and AHS, to the attention of the public and perhaps garner us new members.
Club History
From my communications with Ken Cobb, AHS Historian, we have been able
to establish that the Pensacola Daylily Club is the oldest active club in the nation.
There were several clubs established prior to our date of establishment on August
26, 1953, but they only remained active for a little over a decade.
The first plant auction of the newly formed Pensacola Hemerocallis Society
was held at the Pensacola Garden Center on October 15, 1953. Proceeds from
each plant auctioned were from $.45 to $2.25, with a total of $39.55. Mrs. Merriweather donated $1.50, bringing the total to $41.05. In 1956 the Regional assessment was $.50, and was increased to $1.00 in 1960.
In 1966 the Spring Regional was held in Pensacola for the first time, and the
treasury contained $275.78. Gloria Harris has belonged longer than any other
member, having joined in August 1982. Tom Wilson joined March 9, 1984, and
Carl Brady joined at the show in 1985. Tom Wilson attended a show that used
vases to display their daylilies. He brought the idea to our club and, after several
months and new members joining, the club voted to use vases and tablecloths.
Clubs go through tumultuous times, and 1986 was such a time. Lenora McArthur moved from Vice President to President because of the death President
Deborah Reese, age 35, from colon cancer. Carl Brady became Vice President
to replace Lenora McArthur. Beth Weyels became secretary when long-time secretary Anne Walker became seriously ill with Legionnaire’s disease. Tom Wilson
became Treasurer after Linda Teegarden resigned because of the need to care
for her new baby. It was fortunate that the club had members willing to fill the
void, as the club could have easily folded at that time.

Suwannee Valley Daylily Society
Our program for December was a covered dish dinner followed by 10 games
of Daylily Bingo. We had not played Bingo before but it turned out to be a fun activity. Our prizes were newly introduced daylilies.
Our main focus for the Spring is our Annual Show. Gene Perry, Show Chairman, is getting us organized for the show.
Region 14, Alabama and Mississippi, is having its Spring meeting in Hattiesburg, MS. Our club is making a bus trip to the meeting. We are leaving on May

Call For Auction Plants
Would you like to help your region? Would you like to have your introductions
viewed by hundreds of people from across the country? Would you like to share
some of your favorite hybrids? If you answered yes to any of these questions
then you need to contact me to donate plants for the Region 12, Spring Regional
Auction to be held Saturday, May 19 at the garden of Frank Smith.
There will be a PowerPoint presentation showing all of the plants up for auction. Plants do better in an auction with pictures, so I would like to get the plants
ahead of time if at all possible. Please contact me with questions, concerns, suggestions and of course, names of Cultivars you would like to donate. The deadline for donations is Saturday May 12.

Digital images are now eligible for the Photography Contest for
the first time. For complete rules see JUDGING DAYLILIES.
NEW RULES
1. A maximum of 10 digital images may be submitted for the
Mildred Schulmpf individual bloom award.
2. A maximum of 10 digital images may be submitted for the
Mildred Schulmpf landscape award.
3. A maximum of 10 digital images may be submitted for the
A.D. Roquemore clump award.

BALLOT FOR THE OFFICE OF REGION TWELVE DIRECTOR
The office of AHS Region Twelve Director must be filled for the term 2008 through 2010.
Per AHS Bylaws, to qualify as a Director the member must:
* have been a member of the Society for at least five years and
* have attended at least three National Conventions and
* have attended three annual Regional meetings.
The current Director, David Kirchhoff, has moved from the area and is no longer eligible to
represent Region 12 in this capacity.
At the Fall 2006 business meeting the gathered membership elected a nominating committee
charged with presenting nominees for the office of Region Twelve Director. The nominating
committee, Margaret Tucker (Chairperson), Gene Perry and Tom Dickson present the candi
date below for election.
Space is given for a write-in candidate. Each AHS member of Region Twelve is eligible to
vote.
Photocopies of this ballot will be accepted. E-mail ballots will not be accepted.
The signed ballot must be postmarked on or before Apr.18, 2007.
