Make sure your
basket at the pump and the one (s) in the
pool are clean. You’ll need to recheck these
(especially pump basket) during the process.
The kids were playing in your crystal clear
pool. Mom was relaxing on a nearby lawn
chair. Even Rover was wagging his tail, and
Dad was smiling. Life was good.
Skim the pool with your net and
vacuum/brush the sides: If a lot of dirt
has settled on the bottom, vacuum
before brushing. (Best not to suspend too
much dirt in the water by brushing first).
But that was yesterday, before the season’s
first – probably not the last – monsoon blew
through town. The pool now could be home
for Creatures from the Black Lagoon.
Check the filter pressure:

Backwash when the gauge is
3-5 pounds above ideal operating
pressure.* Check again during/after

Run your system:
With the water chemicals in balance, run
your pool 24 hours straight or until the pool
water is clear. If the water doesn’t clear up,
take a digital picture to Cactus Pools and
get their advice! It’s FREE, and they’ll sell
you only what you need.
* If you don’t know the ideal filter pressure,
backwash. Immediately after backwashing,
the number on the gauge shows your
pool’s ideal operating pressure. Put a mark
by the number so you remember it!
Check water chemistry:
Check Ph and chlorine levels. Add
chemicals as needed. At this point, it’s
critical to take in a water sample for a free
computerized analysis. Pool experts will be
especially watchful of the phosphate level.
High phosphates: Not too long
ago, the treatment for this was draining
your pool. Phosphates increase as dirt
and other outside substances get in the

Twins Aaron and David Hagen are
co-owners of Cactus Valley Pools. More
importantly, they are living proof that nice
guys don’t finish last.
Aaron Hagen has an easy-going style. He’s
the talkative and funny guy you’d want to
pal around with on weekends. Outwardly, he
doesn’t seem to take life too seriously. But
he’s dead serious about running a quality,
customer-oriented business.
His interest in swimming
pools goes back
to Mountain View High
School, where he
set some fairly impressive records on the
swim team. After graduating, he didn’t
much like college so he joined the Navy and
eventually became a Rescue Swimmer.
“My brother and I got out of the Navy about
the same time,” he says. “We decided we’d
clean pools for a living, so we borrowed a
thousand dollars from a friend. That was
enough to get us a pool net, a brush and
some chlorine. Heck, we were delivering
flyers on roller blades till 3 in the morning.’’
It’s a hard and generally hot job that
doesn’t get you on the Forbes 500 list,
but before long he and brother David had
180 customers. Since hard work, excellent
customer service and honesty worked for
them as pool cleaners, why not think big?

Co-Owner/David Hagen
Twins David and Aaron Hagen are
best friends. As co-owners of Cactus
Valley Pools, they use strong customer
service, competitive pricing and sound
business principles to compete against
the corporate giants.
The real chemistry of Cactus Valley
Pools is in the lifelong relationship of two
brothers who attended the same schools,
joined the same swim team, served in the
same U.S. Navy and built the same
successful pool supply company.
“When we got out of the
Navy, we didn’t have a
clue what we’d do with
our lives,’’ David says. “We
didn’t have a penny
between us but
scraped up enough
to start a pool
cleaning business.”
A few years and a few dollars later,
they came up with this brainstorm: let’s
open a pool store!
“Heck, I’d spent four months working at
Paddock Pools, so I was an expert,” David
says with a grin. They opened their first store
in 1997 not far from their alma mater,
Mountain View High School in Mesa.
Today, they both work out of the Gilbert
corporate offices and distribution center to
ensure their 22 stores are restocked daily –
a critical component of their business.
They’ve grown quickly, and weathered the
recession better than most.
To know David and brother Aaron is to
understand their success. It’s a strong work
(and play) ethic, a dogged determination to
do the right thing for customers, and their
hands-on attention to running a business.

Most of us look at the pool pump and
filter and see $$$ signs. And for good
reason … both are pricy to replace.
Salt River Project says you can save up to
70 percent on your current monthly pool
electricity cost. Most pool experts say you’ll
recoup all of the additional pump cost in a
year (two at most) with this energy saver.
In one way, a new Arizona law
(effective Jan. 1) makes replacing the
pool motor more expensive. The Arizona
Legislature decided that single-speed
motors waste electricity; they’re the gas
guzzlers of the pool world.
SRP and Arizona Public Service also
offer $200 rebates to help offset the higher
cost of variable speed pumps. Since Cactus
Pools is certified in this area, you’ll get the
rebate at the time of purchase rather than
waiting for it in the mail. Rebates available for
a limited time.
The newly required variable speed
motors (the Chevy Volts of swimming pools)
conserve energy by operating at very low
speeds to filter water. Higher speeds can be
used for shorter periods to clean your pool
quickly and effectively.
The question, of course, is this: Should I
replace my old motor before it quits? Only
you can answer that. Cactus Pools will give
you an educated guess on electricity savings,
and you can do the math.

Filters
We have three types of pool filters: sand, DE and
cartridge. Each has its pluses and minuses. The
most obvious difference: sand doesn’t filter as well
as DE or cartridge filters (if they are maintained).
On the other hand, sand is true and tested (and
usually cheaper and easier to maintain).
Doubtful you want to replace your filter if it’s doing
the job. Cactus Pools techs can give you more
details on the pros and cons of each.
